- Footage from March 3, 2023, during the recording session for Blood, Hair & Eyeballs in California.
I wish I had documented more of the recording session, at the time, I didn't realize it would be my last album with Alkaline Trio, my family for the past 21 years.
This is an edit of two different takes of the song which was called "Letting Go Too" at the time.
Hear it with the scratch bass track: • Alkaline Trio - Versio...
Engineer/Producer: Cameron Webb
Get the album here: rr.lnk.to/BHE
And go see them on tour (the band sounds great with Atom on drums!)

I love how accurate but easy he makes it look. You’ll be missed dearly derek❤️
Just seeing this whole drum track makes me realize how amazing of a drummer he is
Hope you're okay Derek. ❤
YES! This has brightened up my day! Thanks Derek! ☀️
I wanna see this whole album like this. Love every song, and the drums are a damn blast.
brilliant drumming!
Always been a huge fan of your drumming. You're the reason I got into drums. Appreciate all that you've done.
I always look forward to these vids Derek. It gives me a chance to jam along with you on my guitar!
Absolutely amazing in every way!
@gregjuarez7579 Did you see the link for the version with Dan's scratch bass? Seems like that would be better to play along with.
@@DerekGrantMusic OMG, yes I found them! Thank you so much for the heads up man! Just when I thought these vids couldn't be even better! 🥁
Heya Derek, hope you are doing well! Thank you for another album full of fantastic drumming, you are one of a kind brother!
Stay safe and take good care of yourself!
So under rated!!! One of my all time favorite drummers!!
I love this song❤
Derek is amazing. I remember getting to talk to him on messenger way back in the Bloodpact days.
@phantom_antenna Well, in that case... it's nice to hear from you again! How've you been since our last conversation?
Awesome. Thank you for all these behind the scenes videos. Other drummer fans LOVE them
If i didn't have to eat and do stuff, i could happily sit and watch you play for the rest of time.
Watching you reminds me of Bonham. Or McCartney. You make it look effortless and i watch and think i can totally do that. And then i sit down on my kit and its like ive never seen drums before. ;)
Thank you for posting these. You have no idea how helpful it is.
@user-fc1jn7wh7j That's so nice of you say that, I'm flattered. I realized when I was 5 or 6 years old that playing drums made me feel better when I was sick or upset and it became a type of meditation for me. I'm never more relaxed and comfortable than when I'm playing drums on stage, even these last 5 or 6 years when I was struggling with my mental health. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos and finding them helpful, If you have any questions or just want to talk drums or music you can email my gmail account: drgmerchanddestroy - I'd be happy to help you (or anyone else reading this) in whatever way I can. Best of luck with everything!
@@DerekGrantMusicyou’re a legend. Opening yourself up to people to talk music etc is gracious of you and goes a long way ❤️ keep up the fight
Thanks for uploading. Love the drums on this song.
I love the funkier songs like this and In Vein that have less of a traditional Trio sound, but are total rippers. Y'all are so versatile as artists
Some of your best work on this last outing, a killer parting gift for us all. The Trucks and Trains on steroids groove and fill choices of Meet Me are just chef's kiss
Derek you inspire me so much! I love all of the art you make!
Awesome Derek! Soo musical! That rhythm is going to be in my head for a while! Thanks for the upload.
Thank you.
2:43 thought my Internet was bad. Nope just really cool effect.
@GregGallagher No footage to match that crazy fill (that I had no recollection of prior to editing the video)
@@DerekGrantMusic ha ha, right
@@DerekGrantMusic Ha ha, I tuned in specifically to try to figure out what you did on that damn fill. Oh, well...
so glad to see all these vids derek!
Love seeing how you play these songs! It’s amazing how perfect of a fit all the beats and fills are to fit the song. Love seeing these playthrough! Thank you
Do you happen to have Broken Down In A Time Machine? Thats my favorite off the new album
this drum part is SO fantastic.
Derek this is my favorite song ever thank you so much for sharing this with us!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Always the perfect blend of technicality and tastefulness on the kit

❤
Awesome job on the album, and everything you've been a part of ❤
What a tasty part!
👌🏻🧨
FUck yea
I kind of link this audio better than the drum sound on the album lol.
I was a little meh on BHE's production initially but it really grew on me. A few of my fav Trio recordings production wise for drums in particular are Is This Thing Cursed, the 2020 EP and the BYO split with One Man Army. I think Cameron Webb is overall a great fit for Trio. Matt Allison always was too
People will think me a troll but Versions is a bizarro world Michael Jackson song in the best way possible
@terrencehoward4910 Check this out: bit.ly/PlagiarySmoking From "Plagiary & Piracy" the mostly unreleased mashup album I made years ago.
@@DerekGrantMusic I love this, man!
This is a gem!!
@@DerekGrantMusicDerek, you have no idea how much you are just a genuinely fun person.
I Love when you share anything. Thank you again.
Insane as always… Did you get the recording of Break by any chance??? Such well thought out and incredible drum parts on that one.
@Nick_Magliano Unfortunately I only filmed the two songs that I've posted. There's a chance that Dan or the band's manager have footage of others, I'll see what I can find.
Someone send this video to Atom Willard
Why exactly does Atom need to see a specific clip from the recording sessions for BHE? Be very specific please
@@terrencehoward4910 so he learns to play it right
@@dinnerwithcats yeah I'm sure professional drummer Atom Willard struggles with this fun but rudimentary drum part
@@dinnerwithcatsDG didn't play Porter or Felumlee's arrangements note for note back in the day either, so what's the big deal if Atom does something 3% different on the hi hat here and there or whatever? Drummers have that kind of license by divine right as far as I'm concerned, so long as they stay true to the core of the song. I knew there'd be at least one mouth breather trying to stir up some goofy ass "Derek vs Atom" shit
First🎉
Did you record the album and Dave Grohls studio? If so, what was that like?
@mot3824 Yes, we wrote the album and recorded drums and bass at 606. It's a great studio, we had recorded there once before but only for 1 or 2 days, it was really nice to spend a few weeks there for the latest album. Dave came in a few times while we were there, we'd crossed paths a few times over the years and were friendly with each other, but had more time to hang out in the studio. He was intrigued by my 28" kick drum and asked if he could try it out, it was pretty cool seeing him behind my kit.
@@DerekGrantMusic he used your kit!! That's pretty sweet, anyway he could've been persuaded to cameo on the album? Aha and the other couple of days previously, what album were they from?
@mot3824 We recorded a No Use For A Name song called "Straight From The Jacket" at 606 in 2013 I think? Chris Shiflett and I played lead guitar on it which was pretty cool, Suicide Machines did a european tour with NUFAN when Chris was in the band, so we have a lot of history - and I played with his older brother Scott in Face To Face here and there. Both great people, and incredible musicians.
@@DerekGrantMusic maaaaaaaaaaaaan! That is so cool!!! You've had some amazing experiences, but is it hard to keep it professional and treat it like a job at times?
I see trio in two weeks, first time where it's not you behind the kit. It's going to be weird!
Why did you all separate??
@nerman107 Can you explain what you mean by "separate"?
@@DerekGrantMusic Why did you leave the band? Are you doing ok?
@@nerman107he posted on Insta basically saying that being a touring band was getting more and more difficult as time went on. And that he just needs time to work on himself mentally. Either way Derek is always gonna go down as one of the best drummers in punk rock history
@@nerman107I’m sure there is no hard feelings between him Matt and Dan either. I’m sure they were very thankful that he stayed to record on one more album before his departure
@@ElvisThePelvisEP He is an amazing drummer!!
Faster tempo eh?
Hey Derek, me again was just wondering if you got my email.
