- Footage from February 23, 2023, during the recording session for Blood, Hair & Eyeballs in California.
I wish I had documented more of the recording session, at the time, I didn't realize it would be my last album with Alkaline Trio, my family for the past 21 years.
I'm not sure which take this was, but it was definitely an earlier pass.
I thought the fill going into the bridge was cool and interesting, but no one else seemed to get it (or like it!) - ultimately that section was cut out entirely.
Hear it with the scratch bass track: • Alkaline Trio - Hot Fo...
Engineer/Producer: Cameron Webb

And go see them on tour (the band sounds great with Atom on drums!)

Love Derek’s playing so much. He’s such a massive influence on my playing. This is a perfect example of power and skill. One take genius.
Please enlighten us with whatever recordings you have from that album's production. Best Trio record so far (in my opinion) and an amazing send off to the best drummer we've had. 🖤
Happy that you got to drum for this record before your departure. Thank you for everything you've done!
Superb drumming. Derek is one of the best!
I absolutely love these videos. First, people get a front row seat to see world class drumming. As a guitar player who can hack it with the bass, trumpet, trombone, and very simple, limited, keyboard skills, drumming has always kept me in awe. The coordination, and passion needed to play them are something I just can’t do, so I’m always blown away by great drum performances. Second- I love playing guitar along with the tracks, piped through my amplifier. It’s as close as I can get these days to playing in a band, and it has made me a better guitar player, forcing me to focus on my timing and technique (things that just never were super apparent learning and playing punk rock guitar solo). Thanks again, sir, and to quote a Trio song title- “Keep ‘em Coming”!
This Addiction has always had my favorite drum parts/sound. BHAE is now the other album right up there with it. You can really hear how much attention to detail you put into those parts, like always. But this one was truly something special as someone who has always been the biggest fan of your playing
Love this album, you guys killed it
My son's favorite drummer.
Love your playing, Derek. Great to see you behind the kit here!
Oooohyessss!! I was waiting to see some track of the new album. It was great you still participated in this one. We’re missing you. Hopefully you can join again for the next one. Thanks for these clips. ❤
The fluid transistions to all the different parts, always impresses me derek
Thank you for stuff like this. Need more in my life
Amazing! I was going to write asking if you had the drum tracking for “Break”. Let’s hope. Love you bro!
man, those drums sound SO big!
Derek I’ve been waiting to hear some takes on this by you. Thank you for sharing these.
I hope you are doing well and I thank you for all the chats over the years. You’re one of my heroes in music and in life in general.
Literally my favourite drummer ever!! I love these videos!!
Flawless work, Derek! This is my favorite out of your recent work.
Yep! You’re still one of my favorite drummers. Thanks for helping shape the way I drum!
Always love watching you behind the drum kit, man! Even though you’re not in Alkaline Trip anymore, I hope you’re still gonna come out to play in LA in the future with the Vandals or someone.
Yes! Want to see all of these!!!
Terrific stuff, Derek! It's really cool to see all this behind the scenes stuff.
Amazing work! Love the album so much. What a way to go out!
Love these videos and love your technique - such a joy to watch. Hope you’re keeping well.
Thank you so much, for everything.
Pure gold🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This is so awesome to see, Thanks Derek!
Such a great drummer you are!!!!
Great song. Beautiful drumming.
The drums this song needed.
Was hoping to get some stuff from the new record. Drums are absolutely fire 🔥 🔥🔥
Jesus that kit in that room sounds fucking amazing. Studio 606.
Love this 🔥
Wow the fluency with how you play and how solid your time is is amazing. Also what is that Tom mic? Hard to tell
Enjoyed this thoroughly!! Would (politely) love to see anything you have for BH&E, your work on it was incredible :,) amazing as always!! if by chance you see this, do you have a favourite song that you worked on this time round!?
@Alkalime Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately I only have video of drum tracking for two songs, as I said in the description, I didn't know at the time that it would be my last album with the band, so I didn't document it very well. This was one of the standout tracks when we were writing the album, and also one of the most fun to play.
@@DerekGrantMusic Amazing choice, such a fabulous song! all my love to you 🖤
The hi hat-tompart is so sick and smart
Very cool Derek! Great to see recent stuff.. shame they didn’t like the fill.. no accounting for taste! Keep ‘em coming, thanks for sharing!
Is that the Fulci flesh eating fan club shirt? I have that shirt! I’ll always remember meeting you at soda bar in San Diego and talking about Fulci! Love this videos and your legendary performances on these albums, especially this one.
Man! if you got a video or can make one of the drumming for "Bad Time" I'd love to see it! Its the fills on the second chorus with the floor tom's and similar to the fill in "American Scream" are crazy good.
Damn that fill into the bridge should have stayed! That break in the top end gave it better dynamic in my opinion.
I think I read somewhere that you came up with the main guitar riff too, or am I imagining that? Absolutely killer song all around. And listen Derek, don't beat yourself up too bad about not documenting much since you didn't know you were going to leave at the time - it's pretty clear BH&E is regarded as one of the band's top albums already, very few people get to end things on a high note and this album was a high note for all 3 of you. We really can't put into words how amazing the album is, and how happy we are for you and for Matt, Dan, and Atom.
I’m pretty sure Derek said in a Facebook AMA that he wrote the riff for Break (another great one) and Matt wrote the riff for Hot For Preacher. Couldn’t agree more with your thoughts on BH&E, it still blows me away months later!
This is so freaking cool! Do you have any other footage of your drum tracking from the BH&E sessions?
This is the hardest alk3 album for me to play along to by far. The hi hat is so low in the mix you can't hear it at all and I lose track of the flow. Like I see you playing it here, and it appears to be functioning normally, I can actually hear it in this video....on the record it's totally yeeted. Was that done on purpose in mixing? Here in this video it sounds awesome
Where you say you didn't realize it would be your last album, do you mean you wanted to continue but they thought it'd be better if you just parted company? I know you said you wanted to pursue some other things but were you hoping you could still be part of Alk Trio in some capacity or return after an extended break?
@-TheRealThing- Leaving the band was 100% my choice, and it was the hardest decision I've ever had to make. I flew home after all of the drums were tracked with the intention of going back in two or three weeks to finish recording the album, but during that break I realized and accepted the reality of my situation - my increasing struggle with Bipolar disorder have made it hard for me to travel in any capacity, and for the sake of my health, I can no longer tour on the level expected of the band - especially with a new album coming out. I didn't want to hold the band back in any way, and I also didn't want to jeopardize my health unnecessarily so stepping down was the clear choice. I hope that makes sense. I love and respect Matt, Dan, Alkaline Trio and the fans too much.
How did Cameron Webb become the producer on so much later Alk3 material?
Is this @ 606?
@the_friendly_shirt It is!
how much of the album was you playing???
@ColinSlippers All of it. I made the tough decision to leave the band after I finished tracking drums for the album.
@@DerekGrantMusic I had a strange feeling it was you, the drums are just so good. I love the heavier snares, one of the best albums that has came out in years. Great job dudes.
Come back to alk3 you are awesome.
