- Richard Porter is the script supervisor of "The Grand Tour", the former script supervisor of "Top Gear", and hosts the "Smith and Sniff Podcast" alongside Johnny Smith. He's written a number of hilarious books about obscure cars, and as expected, his car knowledge is incredible.
Topics include: why he bought a Fiat Panda instead of curtains; "man math"; having his 911 stolen; the Porsche Dakar; what the trio (Clarkson, Hammond, and May) deserve more credit for; his favorite episode of The Grand Tour; stories from Top Gear; and his very funny new book.

“Are you working on this trip?” “No. Taking meetings.” Underrated US visa pedantry, love it
YES. Richard is brilliant! And the Smith and Sniff podcast he does with Jonny Smith is hilarious, on that side of things.
OTSOT
My two favourite podcasts, Smoking Tyre and Sniff and Smith
I was hoping he would sneak in a cheeky SPOWARRTSSS

1:51:10 Richard’s Books!
1:20:10 hummer "dildonic" - lets just all keep calling the entire car dildonic from now on and see sales crash.
Yay, made my night! Nearly two hours flew by, felt like a tight one. Love Smith and Sniff too, on that side of things.
Thanks for everything Smoking Tire crew! Love y’all.
Richard porter is so awesome man, he would be so much fun to get a drink with, thanks for this one matt and zack love when he is on
Love Richard's awkward shuffle when the C-bomb gets dropped.
It is quite shocking to hear the C word coming from an American as opposed to a Brit or Aussie..
Love how this guy called out how shit LA is now and Matt stumbled all over trying to make an excuse for the decay😅
Two of my favorite podcasts coming together, great guest!
Superb - two of my favourite podcasts in one and great job Richard.
Richard and Jonny together as guests. Mmmmmm. 😮
Perfect timing! I just finished his book yesterday on audible. And now he's on the podcast!
Ricard is a legend. Great podcast !
The live ad readings from the airport were very entertaining haha
Man get an ad blocker for that browser :)
Richard's column in Evo is consistently excellent.
Zack was looking for frozen berry metallic in the Porsche configurator at 1:05:31
Love Richard. What a guest!
I think we need a weekly TST/SaS collab podcast!
The thing i do miss and i dont think id be alone, is the videos richard and jonny used to do, they were the fkn best ahahahaha
Richard is an amazing guest
Sniffmiester himself 👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌 thank you Matt and Zack ❤️❤️
Richard expressing concern about his personal safety while running...
Zack: Well your already wearing running shoes.
hahahaha
Yes! Love Porter!
I find it so funny that its always during the most interesting things that someone says "this is probably boring"
Came here from Smith & Sniff, excellent show, you have a new sub.
Great guest!
How incredibly delightful.
Not sure how I've missed this mans existence up until now, but I sure learned something today!
Will be checking out his other (non-TG, non-TGT) work for sure :)
I would totally pay for tickets for a live show!

LOL I was just messing with the Dakar configurator + PTS colors last night... Great podcast!
Fantastic episode, thank you all
Awesome chat, guys!
And happy Thanksgiving to all
Hey Matt, have you tried the Oura Ring? It tracks vitals, but lets you continue wearing your awesome watches without double wristing.
Love that smooth sultry voice that matt carries during his man scaped promo. Matt, your voice has my chestnuts roasting on an open fire... 🥜🔥
hearing you guys talk about the GM products as i’m at work on the GM assembly line that makes the tahoe/yukon/escalades really is funny
Matt, what would you say about hybrid watches like Whitings Scan Watch Horizon? Looks like a old-fashioned divers watch but has functions of a smartwatch.
Fiat Panda 100HP is a brilliantly fun car. And climate-friendly!
And on that side of things
Sweet sweet comment, OTSOT
Sweet sweet comment, OTSOT
What was the flatpack car thing?
1:15:10 your forgetting Cadillac also has rwd v8 sedans
1:41:00 Went back and watched the episode, he is 100% right 😂
Great pod 👍🏽👍🏽
I think it is the magnesium roof on the 911 R
I alternate between turning watches into camera gear and turning camera gear into watches, unfortunately there’s always a monetary loss.
Matt bug screen company? Am a sniff petrol fan from way back - seen your stuff too for many years - keep up the good work!
Truly the urge to protect the social standing of where you are is so high. I def have the worst barometer of safety as a 6'4" male though. I'm not exactly choice number one when picking on someone.
Almoat gave up before it started with those ads
Oh I had that spirits in a plane experience, but with gin. Was nice
I can just imagine others in the airport terminal wondering why this man sitting next to them is talking to himself about trimming pubes
b honest about stamp duty , its not charged on every house ,only the expensive ones .
I’ve owned 3 Fiats, an Alfa Romeo and a Land Rover, most reliable cars I’ve ever owned🤷♂️
In a couple weeks will be getting a hyundai i20N to zoom about. Years ago we had a ep3 civic type R and only car both wife and I miss. This'll be the new school run and fun car to go with suv
Matthew, you need an Oura ring
Maybe let Richard speak more then one sentence wihtout interrupting lol
Also LOL at the defense of LA.
Almost certainly not a reflection of "the numbers"
Matt, Get an Oura ring. It does the fitness tracking you are looking for and you can still wear your amazing watches
【promosm】
I think the Garmin Marc series watches are the closest to having a 'mechanical' looking watch with the optical sensors underneath, but I believe the sensor is still a chunky unit. Myself, I'm still holding on to my mechanical watches whilst wearing a smallish activity tracker.
One thing I’ve found useful as a watch person is a smart ring, still allows fitness and sleep tracking but avoids double-wristing
Hate the new genesis coupe, the last one was a true sports car, and was pretty light as well
Whoop strap is the answer for the watch and fitness thing fyi. I also (not ideal and looks like an asshole) wear my mechanical watch on my non-dominant wrist and my Apple Watch on my right hand. Which effectively means I’m wearing two watches but that’s none of your business and I’ll thank you for minding your own 😅
If you think we dont have rally mechanics and EVO’s lying in Scandinavia, especially Finland and Sweden, you are ludicrous? This year WRC1, WRC2 and WRC3 classes were all won by a Finn and half of the grid in this global sport is finns. A lot of ice circuit training and a lot of motorsport in Scandinavia. Not to mention it was us and our drivers who drove and competed in those when they were new. My friend has a carbon fiber bodied ex Juha Kankkunen Subaru from early 90’s that goes now 6,8s 0-200kmh. But he was selling that because of few EVO’s.
Nobody said that there’s no rally mechanics in Finland.
@@jr150 WRC engineering is here.
Bet Matt can't wait for the Trump show I hear it's Elon and Trump for 2024 bring back Trump and God bless America 🙏
You mentioned car electronics. You should interview someone from Automotive Grade Linux AGL.
I'm very curious how a bank would underwrite a high end storage facility for cars. Matt must have gotten creative I don't know many commercial lenders that would finance that type of project. Very cool.
It’s not the only facility of its’ kind.
Finance? You know Matt's dad is worth tens of millions, right?
They're common these facilities in the UK, people want to keep their cars but don't necessarily have the space. The facilities keep care of the cars in storage as well, don't let them rot away.
Um no in LA it is in fact the only facility of its kind.
@@iCGreen_ in LA county his facility is in fact the only property built the way his is. We have earth quakes here and his stackers have never been done before inside how he did it. If you watch his videos he talks about this in depth and how difficult it was as this shit isn't done here. Or I'm wrong either way who gives a shit.
LOL @ Matt being jealous of the people smart enough to invest in things that he wasn't savvy enough or ballsy enough to wager on
