As a 135i owner I can tell you it’s a fantastic platform, the facelift version came with the n55 and a DCT that transmission makes that car, own an e36 drift car as well and can never decide which I like more, only paid 15k for my 135 two years ago with 80k on the clock
I know what Vin means about 90s cars looking better than they drive. I have a minty near stock '93 RX-7, the legend itself, and just rented a 2022 BRZ, and the BRZ is more fun in certain ways, as weird as that sounds. The responsiveness of the steering/brakes, and the confidence with which you can attack a backroad is on another level. I would never buy a BRZ, but it makes me rethink my dedication to 90s cars, and now I want to try an RX-8.
You need to check out the 2006 X-Games where Colin McRae is racing rallycross against Pastrana and on the last corner (ish) McRae rolls his impreza, Go search for it now. He grabs first while upside down, lands on his wheels and drives off immediately, there's slo-mo where he in only on the wheels for maybe 0.1 seconds before wheelspining. Pastrana was awestruck and said "I don't think he even lost time" (Pastrana is a good sport obviously).
1:32:05 you can get a c5 vette, or a salv c6 (13-15k), 135i (10-13k and put an lsd in it 15k), kswap eg/ek (10k, awd 15k), ae86 for 10-15k, r32 gtst sedans are cheap still like 12-15k i wouldnt ever own one tho, fully built e36 328is for like 10-15k, e36 m3 for 10-15k, plenty cars for the 10-15k range still.
I don't know how you guys have arrived at the conclusion that the BMW N54 engines are reliable for canyon (and by extension, track) use. I'm a BMWCCA HPDE instructor, and I've seen them fail countless times when driven hard. The 135 and 335 suffer from endless limp modes, turbo failures, hi-pressure fuel pump failures, rod bearing failures, cylinder failures, and so on. These are all things I have witnessed firsthand over the years. They can be fast, but my experience has shown that they are not durable when driven hard on a regular basis.
Well canyon drives aren’t like track days; but I agree, recommending a turbo car to anyone on a budget is sketchy. Get a 350z and make sure it doesn’t burn oil
As for about 21 minutes in and Chevy making the same models within their fleet between other car companies under the same corporation- ford, Lincoln, and Mazda (depending on the year of manufacturing) did the same thing. The fact that there is a Lincoln model that is just a Ford fusion is hilarious to me.

I rode in a rx8 on track and it handles incredibly. Granted it was on Penskes but the chassis is so strong and stiff it feels like a modern car.
I have an RX8 and I've also driven some exotic cars and honestly..... it holds up, it may not be super fast but it's enough fun for the street
