Way back in 1973, as my first proper job after leaving university, I became a management trainee with the Dove Group, the British Leyland dealer for Croydon & Wimbledon. For 3 months in mid 1974 I looked after the PDI workshop and the preparation of and fitting accessories to the cars for the customers. I got to drive pretty much all the Rovers, Triumphs and Morrises of that era. Range Rover, Stag, TR6, GT6, Spitfire, T 2000, T 2500PI, Rover 2000/3500, Midget (once, being 6'4", I couldn't get in properly!), MGB, Land Rover, Dolomite, T 1300/1500 and one Land Rover (which had free wheeling hubs fitted as an accessory!). The most fun I had was in the Dolomite Sprint, the Rover 3500S. the Triumph 2500PI (all expected!) and bizarrely, one solitary Marina 1.8.TC. That was very quick and agile because it was so light, and had great suspension. 50 years of memories!

It went for spares eventually after I ran it into a kerb at a T junction one foggy night A lot of fun for a 16 year old and my mates Great show Jonny and ,Martin what an interesting chap and a well deserved collection.

That Man spoke so well and eloquently about his cars, considering how many times he’s doubtlessly had to do that, showed me that he really respects your interest Johnnie. Plus he didn’t mention “Ford Escorts” or the word “Cosworth” once! ha ha! (Very refreshing!)..
That is one of the best collection of cars I've ever seen. I'm 67 yrs old I had the Lotus Cortina and the Mexico, my favourite car of the 70's was the Cortina 1600E I just have so many fond memories of that car it makes me smile when I think about it. That is definatley a collection to be proud of, thank you for showing. :)
An incredible collection and what a cool fella. I have narrowed my uberlust down to 2 cars-the Quattro and the Triumph Vitesse-I bought a 1967 Vitesse in the late 80's as a rolling restoration (having never done anything approaching vehicle maintenance) and drove a 1.8 Audi coupe as a young car salesman, but always wanted a Quattro. Amazing memories. Thanks Jonny
Just WOW! What a collection and what a video! Possibly the best Car Cave so far. Extra points given due to the chap actually using all of these amazing things. Brilliant. Extra extra points for the Mk 1 Golf GTI - my favourite hot hatch and one I've owned two of 😊
It's great to see someone with such a passion for the quirky and obscure. Purchasing and restoring them for future generations to appreciate. Not buying vehicles for their current or future value but because he has memory or attachment to them. His knowledge of every vehicle in the collection was astounding, what a great episode. Cheers.
I'm good friends with Martins son. Over the last few years I have had the privilege of joining Martin at a few events including Spa GP 2022, Silverstone GP 2023. Both events he was out on track taking part in the historic hot laps between races over the weekend, pushing those cars to their limits amongst other F1 cars from varying decades. Hats off to you Martin!
Great video. I absolutely love the yellow Triumph 2.5 PI as it was a car I always admired as a boy. The smooth lines on that car are so perfect. What a superb collection of dream cars to own. Wow.
Im 36 years old and my dream car is a Ford Escort RS1600. The front end is beautiful and the way the back end dances seems alot of fun. I'd love a passenger ride in one, as sadly i don't think I'll ever own one. Keep up the great content ✌️
So glad to find out who the new owner of the Beast is, and I feel it's in good hands ,having known the previous owner John Dodd here in Spain for a number of years and had it in our bodyshop for the repaint many years ago I have an attachment with it. Hopefully the new owner will take it to the NEC again in November as I somehow managed to miss one hall last year which had the Beast in it. The colours chosen are way better than the prosthetic limb colour.
I think seeing some of the cars having mould inside them will make a few enthusiasts feel a bit better about their own cars that they have in a collection, but don’t use often. I certainly do! 😄
The Beast’s refurb/repaint was so desperately needed! The new color really changes the whole presence of it from fairground curiosity to something you’d bring to an offbeat concourse.
Much respect to the amount of time, money and effort it takes to get and keep such a magnificent collection. I'm surprised the convertible Karmann Ghia was overlooked but I suppose it isn't that rare, just sort of my preference but with so many outstanding makes and models, we are spoiled. Thanks Perv.
@DavidBrown-bs7gg I was interested to hear the story about how John Dodd was teasing Rolls Royce and that being the reason Rolls was on his case. The story I heard was the German Police called up RR and asked them to stop testing their new model on the Autobahn as it was fucking up their radar traps. John Dodd tweaking RR sounds much more likely.
1:06 You gave every member of Greenpeace a heart attack there. I love this. This guy really loves his old cars. It's not a money piggy, it's about loving them and driving them. Love it.
Loved this, what a great job on the Beast, looks really lovely with the changes and new paint. My Dad had a Citroen DS23 Pallas in white when i was a kid in the 80s and also a Mercedes W108 in gold which he had restored and resprayed black from the original gold and also an automatic, lovely cars 👍😊
Another fantastic car cave Jonny. Also loving Smith and Sniff... a podcast in which two friends talk about cars and many other things! Highly recommended to one and all. Keep up the good work fellas
47:53 That ol' beauty really reminds me of the Holden Commodore VN - VS era (90 - 96) Also hearing Vauxhall is/was under the GM umbrella... it makes a lot of sense! Holden put the Buick 3800 V6 & Aussie 5000i V8 under the bonnets.
This is the best car collection I have seen for its authenticity, passion, this guy has built a true collection and for all the right reasons. Unmatched , anywhere. Not about value but from a passion. Great video, well done.
I’m absolutely in heaven, the GT 2, the mk1 golf, the 205. I think I’ve dirtied myself. Then he mentions British Leyland Im sat here watching this from Leyland, my hometown born and bred.
Absolutely phenomenal. What a guy Martin is. Nothing but unbelievable amounts of respect. Thank you for sharing Martin, enjoyed every story. Great video ❤
Well Johnnie, That is the car collection of a true motoring hero! Martin obviously has taste, a very broad taste if we are honest. Set out in a car park, you would have to say the collection is a great event by itself. Fantastic to see the range of cars he has and the attention to detail on each one. The Aston DB5 and Range Rover need to stay as they are and be used. If he needs people to keep them being used on the roads, I would selflessly volunteer. What a man, great to see his passion and love for all his cars.
What a collection and what an incredible mix! It was great to see an MG Maestro and Montego among such an amazing collection. Of all the cars, I think the Lotus Carlton would be my choice
What a collection. Loved the start up of the Beast, no electric hum and glide away there. A fountain of knowledge and happy to share it with JS. One the best car caves to date.
He is correct about the Montego Turbo, Dont mock them if you have never driven . I ran one as a family car for around 5 years, and they ride and they handle really well. Quick too. The biggest issue was the standard brakes, it would go quicker than you expected and you could soon find yourself in a postion where it was hard to stop it
I don't have any words to discribe my feelings about Martins car cave, Oh my what a glorious eclectic collection of cars, I mean from a bubble car to a lotus carlton to a 997 Gt2 to a 6r4 to the beast, That was the best hour of my Sunday, Thank you both gents. I bet I know if you do go back the car that is on your list to drive, Would it be the Carlton??
Absolutely beautiful car cave. Such an interesting and eclectic collection. Really loved hearing all the stories. Very generous of the owner to share them with us. My favourite car of this bunch is the Lotus Carlton. I had an unhealthy obsession with these when they were new. No one else does amazing videos like this. Well done Jonny!
Who didn't love a Lotus Esprit... It's a fabulous design. The most comfortable seats. The narrowest drivers' footwell ever. I almost bought one in 1983. Should have. Absolutely fantastic car...
That's by far my favourite man cave yet!! For me, it's the carloton to drive!! But i would do unimaginably thing!! To own that RS1600 in Sunrise Yellow as well Absolutely my dream car!
What a garage! Full of surprises at originality and the gentleman's taste. The Triumph 2500 PI is immaculate as you say. My best mate who lived opposite me, his dad had exactly the same car, in the same mustard yellow. I remember that the Lucas fuel injection lines were a bright orange coloured plastic. This example seems to have black fuel lines. My favourite car would be the DB5 but in silver of course as I was mesmerised with it from the James Bond films when I was a kid. Being greedy here, but I'd like the DB9 and the Range Rover as well lol. Thanks for bringing us along with you on your visit Jonny, and thank you Martin for showing your wonderful collection to us.
Wow, every car is a gem, the best collection of cars I have ever seen under one roof. Martin is a man of impeccable taste. Given the chance I would take the 1.9 205GTi
What an absolute amazing guy, his taste is impeccable and so very true about snooty exotic owners. Most have never experienced some of the weird little quirky benign vehicles but often times those bring the most smiles!
Great collection and nice to see each car actually meaning something, not just there as it’s a favourite with the cool kids. Amazing that he owns Hotel de France in La Chartre. For anyone that doesn’t know it was a huge favourite with the teams and drivers for the Le Mans 24hr races, especially in the 60/70’s. The walls are lined with signed memorabilia from anyone who is anyone. We used to go to Lemans every year and would pop out to visit Hotel de France. Iconic place. 😎
Another great video, watching it just before setting off to a 12 hour night shift so puts me in a good mood before going in, and must say the Beast looks way better in it's new paint scheme, hearing aid beige always seemed an odd choice
@@TheLateBrakeShow much appreciated you have no idea how boring my job is so getting my car fix definitely helps, all the best for the year ahead have a good one 🤟
I had never heard of The Beast untill I watched your video about it earlier today, and now seeing it having been brought lovingly back to life, so to speak, is pretty fantastic. And honestly, out of all those wonderful cars, it's the one I would want to take home. Thank you for such a well-produced, wonderfully presented video.
Lotus Carlton for me. I drove one many times and it never failed to put a big smile on my face. Ask your mate Shakey who he knew years ago that owned one and was mad enough to let his employees loose in it🤣
What a great stroll down memory lane, i owed a few of them cars , the cheap ones of course, what a fantastic collection, a true English car enthusiast , not one Ferrari or Lambo in sight . Great video thank you .
Now that is a car collection. It's got to be the most eclectic one you've featured on the channel. I think I'd have the Carlton and the completely mint Mk1 GTi.
As a teenager back in the early seventies I thought I was clever putting an Mg1100 engine into my 63 mini, but a jet engined A35 blimey! Now you’re talking !! Great episode Johnny! 👍
This has to be the best collection so far. What a collector Martin is. Down to earth and realistic. no electric here. thank goodness, long live the ICE.
Martin is surely the petrol heads, of a certain age, dream. Pretty much every car in that cave is a car we have lusted after, owned, crashed or still aspire to as age creeps up on us and finances allow. I would happily sit in a pub with him and quiz him about every car in his collection and the reasons why. (by the way Johnny and Martin that is an offer especially if you get a pod cast out of it)
Fascinating guy and collection. Tough choice on which one I would have, but going on the theme of nostalgia, my heart would go for the triumph Vitesse. I grew up with my dad daily driving his Vitesse 6, which was his father's before him.
Great episode - For me the Vitesse overdrive. It was for a long while my dream car, superseded only by the Sunbeam Rapier. Never had the money for either, at the time. Full of memories though of that time in a life!!
It must be cold and damp in there. Noticed nearly every steering wheel had a mouldy substance on it.....except for the open top ones. Magnificent collection though. Fantastic episode Jonny ❤
That garage encapsulates my 1960's childhood, and onwards, my dad bought, repaired and sold car. I have been in a lot of those cheaper cars as a passenger and as a driver. Particularly remember, Vitesse, Fuel guzzling 2.5 PI, Mk 1 1.6 GTI and very quick (for the period) 205 1.9 GTI, seeing a SM near Ilchester in the 70's. What a great video and very decent of Martin to allow you access to his collection. 👍👌
What an incredible eclectic collection, I’d never heard of “The Beast” but that car is too cool, like mixing every villain car with mom’s old station wagon. Do you can take over the world and still get your kids to football practice by noon

2:13 most brilliant tow photo I have ever seen . 2 icons
Jonny what a collection, just amazing. Martin enthusiasm is intoxicating. How many cars has he saved. Well done guys
Cheers.
That is a car lovers collection. Love all of them. From 205 to 6R4 to turbo F1 and turbo maestro lol. Awesome
Halfway watching....already best car cave ever. Very very nice to see a guy who actually drives his cars. Keep em coming,..really enjoy your show!!
Awesome - Martin legitimately has options for every road, route or scenario with every one providing a different experience. True driving enthusiast.
What line of business is Martin in?
Great video. I absolutely love the yellow Triumph 2.5 PI as it was a car I always admired as a boy. The smooth lines on that car are so perfect. What a superb collection of dream cars to own. Wow.
Im 36 years old and my dream car is a Ford Escort RS1600. The front end is beautiful and the way the back end dances seems alot of fun. I'd love a passenger ride in one, as sadly i don't think I'll ever own one. Keep up the great content ✌️
Wonderful collection! The Alfasud!! Beautiful!!! WOW!!!
Your blood, sweat, tears, experience and ambition is really paying off good sir. Well done for making the best uk automotive show and podcast!
So glad he bought the Beast and did it justice
@DavidBrown-bs7gg
I was interested to hear the story about how John Dodd was teasing Rolls Royce and that being the reason Rolls was on his case.
Your dad had great taste👍
Thank you @@jimmyh6601
Probably my favourite episode ever. A joy to listen to you both and a car collection I would replicate tomorrow. Thank you both real cars real people.
Another fantastic car cave Jonny. Also loving Smith and Sniff... a podcast in which two friends talk about cars and many other things! Highly recommended to one and all. Keep up the good work fellas
Thanks for supporting with your eyes and ears.
That was a very touching episode on a number of levels. Well done. "Time to make new memories" wise words that she would be proud of you for.
Nice to see a proper car guy - not mearly a collector. Buys what he likes because he likes it. Huge respect and a great episode Jonny!
47:53 That ol' beauty really reminds me of the Holden Commodore VN - VS era (90 - 96)
Also hearing Vauxhall is/was under the GM umbrella... it makes a lot of sense!
Holden put the Buick 3800 V6 & Aussie 5000i V8 under the bonnets.
What a collection and what a likeable knowledgeable humble gent.Hats off to you sir.
Then he mentions British Leyland
Im sat here watching this from Leyland, my hometown born and bred.
Absolutely phenomenal. What a guy Martin is. Nothing but unbelievable amounts of respect. Thank you for sharing Martin, enjoyed every story. Great video ❤
If carlsberg made car collections... such an eclectic mix of utter classics and curios with so much history, outstanding 👍🏻
Well Johnnie,
That is the car collection of a true motoring hero!
This has to be my favourite, amazing collection, I had a black and tan Alfasub 1.5 Ti,loved it
What a collection.
I'm 57. That's my bloody car history!. I mean I have important memories with all the cars. Absolutely fantastic. I'm going to bloody cry :-)
I love coming back here. All of the collections you show are amazing, but this one is just special. Loving it.
Wonderful collection. Martins passion reminded me of the guy with the mini Mercedes museum. Proper petrolheads. Great episode.
Really, really enjoyed this video, fabulous collection!
Well done Jonny, all the best from Greece
Just catching up on my backlog. Loved this! What an eclectic collection and some real underdogs in there. Great stuff.
My mouth was stuck open the whole episode , what a collection!
What a guy😊 I’ve actually owned a montego turbo and a Alpha sud 1.5 ti, and I’m a binman from Cheshire, Love it
Nothin' wrong with being a bin man - but from Cheshire? 🤣
Love the guys you visit Jonny, they are are all so humble and down to earth, brill video, many thanks to Martin. Just got to be the montego!
Another great video, watching it just before setting off to a 12 hour night shift so puts me in a good mood before going in, and must say the Beast looks way better in it's new paint scheme, hearing aid beige always seemed an odd choice
Glad to hear it boosts you up for the late Subday shift. Thanks for watching.
Host is cool and the owner is the type of rich bloke that doesn't seem like a twat. Enjoyable watch :)
I love literally every car this man owns. They're all bloody fantastic and I'm so glad he's keeping a lot of these "less desirable" cars alive.
Speedy recovery Dave!!
Health always comes first, work will always there!
I’m absolutely torn between the Lotus Carlton & Ford Escort Mk1 RS 1600.
Great episode - For me the Vitesse overdrive. It was for a long while my dream car, superseded only by the Sunbeam Rapier. Never had the money for either, at the time. Full of memories though of that time in a life!!
I had both, my Rapier was a Holbay H120. My Vitesse a white 6 with overdrive. 😁 totally agree with you.
It must be cold and damp in there. Noticed nearly every steering wheel had a mouldy substance on it.....except for the open top ones.
Magnificent collection though. Fantastic episode Jonny ❤
indeed, the mouldy steering wheels made me want to clean them.. he needs a dehumidifier or 3...
That gentleman has fantasticly mad taste in cars and has pretty much all the cars I would want in my garage 🏴👍🏻
