I sold my Ursa Mini 4.6k G2 to get the Fx6. Two years later, I regret it. I am a shoulder shooter at I just find the Ursa to be a much better solution. It is all in one with their own should rig and view finder that nothing compares with. And I still think the image quality is out of this world. If I was you I would wait til after NAB to make sure BM is not releasing som crazy good Ursa update for a whole lot less money than the Burano. Good luck - I enjoy your content!

I always felt the FX6 was not the right replacement for my URSA. I am hoping the Burano is more of a "cine" camera and less of a broadcast camera, feeling more like the URSA, and I just cannot see BlackMagic releasing a camera with AF, IBIS, V-ND, 16-bit compression RAW, and 8.6k full-frame sensors. But I am hoping we finally get the new body design that is well overdue; that will be great for a lot of shooters.

I sold my Pocket 6k Pro + Canon R6 and I bought the FX3 + FX6; but I miss so much the image quality from the Blackmagic. I think I'm going to sell my FX6, keep the FX3 (for gimbal shots) and buy an Ursa 4.6K G2. I mostly do handheld shots (+ shoulder rig). The FX6 is so convenient (AF, Lowlight, Variable ND,..) but it's rare when I'm in love with the image. When I had the Pocket, every shots looked like a movie; the Blackmagic has much better colors, texture & highlight rolloff, it felt much more organic less digital like a real movie not like the broadcast image coming from the Sony's.

I like the Burano a lot as a system upgrade path. At the same time, after taxes and fully rigged you’re looking at $35k and up, but for those mid-tier FX jobs you mention it will be hard (more likely impossible) to boost your rates to cover the updated hardware. So in my case I’m more interested to see what Sony does next in the FX space, and/or what Blackmagic does with an updated Ursa with CFExpress B slots etc. I don’t think this is the time to rush into a new system unless you’re sure the client work justifies the investment. In six months the cine market is going to look very different with the Burano only the tip of the spear.

… one should never include equipment in the dayrate.
Equipment rental is on top. Wether it is in-house or external.
And one should not buy equipment to maybe get some clients. That is what rental houses are for. Get the equipment that you make money with by renting it out to yourself on your productions

    • @LukasStumpf

I agree, especially with the Rates. The market right now decreases instead of increasing and the mid range segment disappears more and more. What‘s left are solo shooters and the big big Production houses.

the Burano seems pretty nice, but at this price point I would also take a look at the Sony Venice 1. You can find a complete package for around 20k and it also has OG recording which is awesome for anamorphic.

I am not surprised that not everyone is picking the Arri over the Burano.
Sony pretty much had a monopoly on the small to even larger size projects since a long time now. Especially since 4k masters became really popular and Arri only doing 3.5k open gate upscale to 4k. They have a camera for every size and budget and their cameras are all well proven.
I recently shot on the Arri 35. It's great. Really ergonomic on set. Loved every part of the image. But if I would have to invest for myself, I'd go with Sony every time. (Also partly because I sometimes do more cinematic live work like streaming big budget weddings and Sonys just work well in live environments.)

I agree that a lot of the corporate clients I work with don't really know, although they do know who Sony and Canon are but also don't care. When getting hired as a DP, etc., producers and directors do know, and that is why the Arri brand name is so important. I am hoping the Burano gets a similar reputation as the Venice, but we can only see.

Burano, nice camera. However I'd have to go with the FX6. The image quality difference between the two is not worth the ticket for one, and more importantly for two, I'd rather have 3 FX6s vs 1 Burano.

From what I hear on RUclips, clients would rather use SCinetone because it's good enough and they don't want to or know how to or why there is a need to color grade. It puts the Sony cameras at the top of the hill for contract-based work. People know Sony, Canon, and Panasonic, but they have no clue what the other companies are, so you have to pick one, and which one has the best autofocus and "color science" at the consumer price point will probably win because more people are familiar with the name.

I'm an editor who works with Ursa footage... and it objectively is flawed. It reminds me of a $99 camera you'd see for sale in 2002 that is marketed as "HD" but it's only technically 1920x1080 and the picture quality apart from that is a blurry mess. The Ursa is like that, it looks weird... the footage frequently has weird lines in it, the grain looks like a grid pattern rather than natural grain. Anything out of focus in front of the lens just looks low resolution rather than just out of focus. Often times a go pro looks better than the Ursa.

I'll be the flier here and say I do think the Burano is a bit overpriced. Yes, I know its feature set, and as a camera package it looks awesome, but right now, I see its main competitor in function the C500ii, and its main competitor in price the Raptor. While C500ii has few less features, it still has most of them, big resolution, internal RAW, and is now WAY less expensive than Burano. In the case of the Raptor, it lacks many of Burano's features, but the Raptor's image walks all over the Sony (from what I've seen), let alone the prestige that RED brings, which it absolutely does. All that to say, I don't think Burano is a bad choice...just maybe not a shoe-in obvious one for a lot of people. After all, there are some REALLY nice cameras in that $20K-$30K price point.

  • @SamLucas26

I think the Burano is the most compelling cinema camera that Sony has ever made. I'm NOT a fan of the workflow of Sony in general and I HATE shooting with the FX line, so I just don't use them when I have the option not to (not a statement about the quality of the products and what they produce, which is great by the way, they're just not my preference from a workflow standpoint).
But I think the Burano is going to go gangbusters for them. It's a really compelling option for a lot of reasons and a lot of those mid to high mid jobs in the commercial, narrative, and doc space.

    • @SamLucas26
      @SamLucas26 7 месяцев назад

@@tudormakesfilms Both, frankly. BUT mainly the actual use of the camera. I'm a DP so I don't handle post production except for on smaller client projects where we handle 100% of the process in house in which case we're either shooting on Red or Canon as we own a C300 mark iii, C500 mark ii, and Red V-Raptor.
But most of my work through agencies, the agency sets requirements for camera specs because they're handling post so we have to go with what the agency requires which leads to us working with Sony sometimes and I just really dislike it relative to other platforms we work with (Red, Canon, and Arri predominantly).

Wish you luck mate. However I think the Burano is way overpriced. Sensor wise, it's much worse in latitude and dynamic range performance than the Ursa mini pro you sold. You could see the tests conducted by CVP and cined. Codecs wise, there's nothing to speak about really. No comparison to 12-bit BRAW with highlights recovery. If IBIS and autofocus are what you seek. Then I think the FX6 is a better buy for your needs. Looks like you're more of a documentary shooter than a narrative filmmaker. So it's understandable why BM, ARRI and RED cameras wouldn't suit you. But Burano is way overpriced for docs IMHO. And it's far worse than say REDs in the same price bracket for narrative filmmaking.
