I recently picked up chalk pastels and got unmotivated by how bad my portrait turned out. Thank you for all the pointers, I'll be sure to try them out!
Amazing how feathering is such a powerful technique. About nine minutes in, it looks almost like a random salad of colors. By twenty-seven minutes, it's unmistakable who it is. Just magical.
Thank you, very inspiring! I have been blending everything to death, so it was great to see this different method!
amazing work
love Michaela
The first thing I learned with pastel is never to blow the dust. Pastels are pure pigment and can be toxic to inhale. The portrait you created is lovely. Thank you.
I have been watching this 3 times now. It effin beautiful what you do!!!
That’s super sweet of you to say, thanks 🙏🏽

Thats soo beautifull. Thanks for sharing😍
Amazing
amazing work! which brand of pastels are you using here?
HI,
Love your demo the way you apply rhe pastel with very little detail just dark and lighr tones then start to add detail and bring
it all together and finish with a fantastic Portrait . 👍😊, PS . For your health please don't blow pastel dust a small hand
held hoover would be a better option.
Would a vacuum probably smear the painting or suck up too much color? How would you do it? Just curious, not criticizing
Beautiful work ❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow this is absolutely lovely.. I have a little problem over blending the colors in the face after applying the base and the value layers, please 🙏 🙏 , if you could do a tutorial on how to blend the face properly well using soft pastel, I would be very great full mam.. Thanks
I normally blend with a stick of pastel rather than fingers as it makes it really dirty. Try using a lighter colour to blend.
This is lovely. Good advice and technique! What kind of paper and pastels did you use?
You are genius somehow!
I've waiting for blending .
I just did and eye with pastel chalk, and I think it was so good, but tha lashes and brow ruined the whole thing :(
I hope this video will help! ty ☺️
Amazing! On which underground do you work? Is it paper?
please make one for acrylic/ painting self portraits ! love your videos ❤️
Could you please share where to buy this specific coloured paper, colours look so vibrant on it and is it archival ?
It's really cheap sugar paper. I think the colors look vibrant because the warm colors are balanced with cold colors.
Your artworks are beautiful❤️ thank you
🤩♥️😊💐🍀🎁
Merci! Bravo! 🤩🤩🤩😊🌹🍀🎁
Do you ever blend with fingers?
I try not to. It makes it super messy and the colours get super dirty 🙈
what kind of paper do you use?
Sugar paper :)
Sry
Is that a dis? Why do you say it doesn't matter? If you intend to draw Michaela Coel, it absolutely matters.
A dis to my own ability to resemble her beauty in a short drawing without practising! Definitely not to her. I'm a huge fan, but that often happens...It's often hard to get resemblance of someone you admire a lot. It doesn't matter because my aim was to demonstrate techniques for chalk pastels in portrait on black skin and I only used her image as a photo reference, it's not quite the same as doing a portrait ;)
@@hackneyfinearts8483 Ah. Got you! :)
This is why I've avoided anything, character drawing/portrait drawings, with any ethnicity other than those of "white" tones. The fear of the result looking like an insult. Especially because I'm a beginner. But I absolutely love dark skin tones. Love. I always have. I wish we'd move past this way of thinking: looking for negative. Thank you, @HackeyFineArts, for this video and your wonderful response. I am unable to draw anything well... Light skin tones. But with your video and humbleness I have courage to try darker skin tones. Which are so incredibly beautiful. ❤💖💕
@@katewoollard5538 you obviously have the luxury to "move past this way of thinking", I do not. You may label it "negative" till the cows come home, my question was apropriately and respectfully asked and answered. You take care. 🤘🏿
Luxury... We all have luxuries.... Every one of us... Every single one of us that lives in a developed country... It's a matter of choosing what you see... I wasn't disrespectful about your comment... On the contrary, you made my point and highlighted the truth of my hesitancy to draw any character or person of any other ethnicity than lighter skin tones... I wish you well too ❤💖💕
your video is out of focus!!!!!!
Sorry to disappoint you, we are new to this. Just making videos to keep my students and the general public entertained during lockdown.
no me gusto!!!
lo lamento, no se puede satisfacer a todos siempre...Espero encuentres alguno x ahi que te fascine!
