  • Pastel Portrait Tutorial. It can be difficult to use Pastel sticks for skin tones... here is my approach blending the subtleties over the stick layer using Pastel pencils to achieve realistic transition from dark to light skin tones and creating the correct value, chroma and edges that makes up the overall effect. This is a request from a few of my Patreon's so here is the short version. The Long version for Patreon will be on there middle of July 2023.
My passion is to help you to create realistic and soulful portraits. If you found this video useful please give it a like. Be sure to comment and say hello and let me know what kind of videos you'd like to see.

Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I usually use: numbers...
    Primary colours...
    Reds... 788-060, 080
    Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
    Blue... 788- 145
    Orange 788-052
    Purple 788-099
    Green 788-719
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as some of the lightfastness is poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

This is great! It's true that you can never find the right color and I had always been told you can't really easily mix soft pastels. This shows that is very wrong. Makes me happy that I don't have a need to buy new soft pastels, just use what I have. Thank you. Your art is so beautiful as well

This has opened my eyes to pastels in a big way. I’ve always tended to avoid them because I usually work light to dark with Magic Markers, then go textural with graphite, Pencil Crayons and other mediums like Gouache for highlights and sometimes watercolours etc. I loved how you explained both the ‘thinking and approach’ required at times when in the act of drawing/painting etc, as well as how to use complementaries to neutralise a hue. This is a beautiful thing to me. I have subscribed and thanks very much!

Hi Pete, Pastel medium is a great way to express colour... the use of the complementaries to neutralise a hue is crucial to achieving a realistic look. All the very best... thanks for watching and subbing. 🙏

I love your content. I have been on a journey after discovering a hidden passion at 52. Been drawing for two years now and draw mostly people's pets just now. I have just taken the jump to colour with pastels and I'm struggling with colour and colour theory. I feel and am starting a new journey and find you as well as well your content to be very grounded and practical, so thank you for sharing such amazing content. I will be joining you on patreon in the next few days 🎉

Hi Dougie, congratulations on finding your passion for art, which can be very healing and a wonderful way to connect to the energy around us. Great way to start creating is b/w work as this gives good foundation with values. Colour is such a joy and is very addictive. I try to keep things very simple. | studied many of the old masters ways many, many years ago and stayed with their ideas of the importance of a simple palette. I have developed my Pastel technique from what I do with Oils. Look forward to welcoming you to the Patreon community. All the very Best... Dave 🙏

@@DavePortersArt it shows in your passion and. Narration. My sister is the real artist of the family. She was in a coma for two months with COVID and through that time learning to draw gave me a way to feel connected to her. She has recovered somewhat but not able to do her art.
It has brought us so much closer and she is thrilled at seeing my art so can't wait to get some colour to show her.
Thanks for the reply and see you on your patreon👍

Really enjoyed this video.. First time I’ve heard a pastelist use primaries and colour theory to neutralise colours. Been learning more about this because I love watercolour. Hasn’t stopped me buying 75 tubes though! Now I’m trying to use a more limited pallet across the board with all the mediums I paint with.

I never learned pastel. Wish I had. Saw a bulgarian alcoholic do a portrait of my mother once, in Sofia back in the 80's. Even wasted he made a superb portrait - before being thrown out of the bar by the owner for making a pass at my mother. Can't deny his talent for drawing though!
I bought a really expensive set of pastels years ago, tried for a while but gave up. Maybe one day!
But when I was a lad at school, drawing every week, I made a breakthrough once. Did a homework mission, and decided to do montage page of Motorbike Racing. Central to the composition was a portrait of Carl Fogarty. I spent a long time sketching it, then as I went to colour it (oldschool Derwent Artists crayons), I stared at the reference and I could have sworn ... I see PURPLE there, on his face! And I see GREEN! WHY am I seeing GREEN? I thought....
But something told me to go with it. So layering up from darks to lights, I went from black to purple to green (!!!!) and then started with the creams and yellows and blending it all togehter. And I ended up with a hyper realistic looking Fogarty. That was the breakthrough moment for me, drawing from life / reference was never the same again. I had learned how to LOOK and how to SEE! Putting it down always came easy to me, drawn as a hobby since I was a child ... but once you learn to look and see, you make big bounds!
    Believe in your eyes.

Hi, amazing experience you have had and are having... once you open the heart and let go of thinking about things too much a veil lifts and you see reality as it truly is.... a beautiful, wonderful embracing of colours and energy. I love to spend time in the shadows of trees, blows my mind and magical the feeling is. All the very best... thanks for taking the time to share your experience with the community... best wishes with your art journey. 🙏

@@DavePortersArt Yes, I agree! I think being able to draw - learning how to disconnect your brain from your knowledge and experience and just LOOK and SEE whats in front of you - the colours and the shapes etc, not only does that give you a true ability to draw it also makes you look at the world differently.
Trees (as you say) and their colours, bushes and plants, old buildings, rusty scaffolding, even people - you begin to train your brain to really appreciate whats in front of you, and it makes the world an awesome place.
Pity that most of us (myself included) often fall into the trap of living so fast, always going somewhere doing something, we rarely get chance to stop and look. That's maybe one of the things I enjoy most about drawing, is being able to chill ... and really spend some time looking and appreciating the world.

Thanks Dave. Learned a lot from your clips. Was wondering if you stick strictly with Rembrandts for skin tones. I usually start with Schmenke or Sennelier and use my Rembrandts for background saturation as they work great for blending while keeping the brilliance in pigment. Do you keep it simple or do you add other pastel sticks? Thanks Dave. Love your work!

Have you ever used "greening" for flesh tones as a base layer? I have used it a couple of times and it seems to give a little more depth to the skin. Also, if you use only primary and secondary colors what do you do with all those other colors in the pencil box?

    • @DavePortersArt
      @DavePortersArt  Год назад +6

Hi Dan, I have seen this done before with the green... I felt it made the skin tone unnatural tbh in my experience, I do use green a lot to de-saturate the red to give natural looking values, but adding the green for base layer didn't seem to work well for me. I use the other pencils in the box for clothes and backgrounds, then add the subtleties over the top with the primaries to achieve the correct colour blends. 🙏😊
