I would usually paint with watercolor, but my fiancé got me some soft pastels and I have no clue of how to use it. I find them quite messy and difficult to get details into your painting. I’m current in a tutorial binge and yours have been really helpful. Thank you so much
i too had a prob with wanting to add fine detail. while pencils are good, its difficult to match colours, plus they wear out real quick. solution is, the transfer method. ie laydown a sheet of paper with a layer of the required colour pastel and with a nice sharp b pencil draw/transfer your details ontop of your blended pastels. so far it has worked a dream. amazin how the chalk responds to pressure allowing for more tones, gradations. btw really informative and helpfull video. thank you.
That was so much help! I didn't learn any techniques with my BFA. My drawing instructor just drew an apple and blended it with her fingers and was like "There you go, that's soft pastels".
Wonderful techniques I have not used pastels in many years and I think you have a real handle on this medium! Thank you for sharing these tips and I look forward to watching more of your videos! Have a lovely day!
Thank you so much! I just got my first set of Mungyo pastel, and was very confused how to use my soft pastel and how I can make any textures etc. Really helpful video
I feel really great watching this video, I am learning so much about blending of colors. I am so inspired to have more drawings and videos of them to be uploaded in my channel. Thank you for inspiring me. God bless.
Do you think heavyweight mixed media paper would be a good choice for parchment? Also I’m thinking about storage for them. Would wax paper suffice not to smudge the painting in travel.
Do try them! I am sure you will love them :) ps.ya posovetovala by posmotret kanal kalacheva school, tam ochen mnogo poleznoy informacii ot Leny Tatkinoy i Iriny Klimovoy.
Hi! I have the velour and pastelmatt,,nice selection of soft pastels and pastel pencils,,but still consider myself a beginner for sure. Going to be watching your Patreon video's today. Have a great weekend!
I have had a pad of the Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper that I didn't think I would use, and am just now watching your amazing Lightening Pateron video...I love it! Now I have brought my pad of paper out to try this on that! I have some foamcore board I think I will mount my paper on. Love your Patreon channel!!! Already learning a lot from you Kate!!!
Hello Jekaterina Kotelnikova. How are you doing? I am doing fine. I have a question. Can i use boahong water colour paper fine 300gsm? I use the fine wcp also for my acrylic paintings and charcole drawings. I love you,re explanation. So easy to follow along whit you,re tips and pastel strokes 👍🏾😁🖐🏾
Dear Kate, Your utube video 'Ways to erase pastel' totally saved my life this week! At a craft fair at the weekend a couple picked up the last card of my stock of a particular image asking to buy the original pastel! Total amazement! I'd painted it years ago and it was gathering dust in my studio! In between times I'd fiddled to improve it!! A bad idea! Anyway your video gave me the desperately needed knowledge to revive it, remove the rubbishy background and bring it back to the image the punters hadon heard!! I set to work, confidence seeped back andthe customers are happy! Actually we are sort of working together...they telling me which bits of the painting they want me to work on! Cooperation...perfect...win-win! Anne
I have to draw moss with pastel. With paint I could use a sponge, but what could i use for pastel to do this faster rather than drawing every tiny bit?
hello! What I usually do is use pastel on its side when I have to cover a larger area, it also creates interesting texture, depending on the force you apply and the angle. But you can also crumble pastel onto the drawing, put a clean sheet of paper over it and roll a pencil over the top, that will create leaflike texture as well. I use it with seascapes to add foam spray.
When using graphite, its told that it's better not to use finger for blending. But for soft pastel, all of the videos show blending with finger. What about the finger oils? Won't iy affect the longevity of the drawing?
Hello Kate. I had a doubt....can you pls tell me after making a drawing with soft pastels is it necessary to use a fixative to fix it on its place. Pls answer my question. Thank you
Hello! :) the thing with white paper is that it darkens the colors too much. if you try to swatch a couple of light colors on any midtone paper and then compare it with the same colors on white you will see a huge difference and even very light colors might seem dull, dark and dirty on white paper. it's a good idea to get some experience with pastels first and then move on to white and black paper and experiment with it
Kate Amedeo Art Thank you 🙏 It’s so great how you answer our questions so fast. Some channel creators don’t respond at all, and I’m so glad you do, as we need your advice. 🌹🍀🍃
I’m drawing anime characters on Bristol Vellum paper, using a black colored pencil for the outlines. I want to use soft pastels to color them, but not sure if it’s the right medium. What do you think?
well, it could be an interesting experiment. one thing to remember is that pastels don't layer well over colored pencils and you have to practice using the pastels before your hand knows the right movements to create the marks you'd like to make :)
Hello Kate, Thank for sharing this!💖It is really useful! I have a question would like to ask...I used to paint with Mungyo soft pastel on Canson's pastel paper, it's all fine and I can easy to mix colors together, but something wrong and which is I don't know what happened..I bought a box of Rembrandt soft pastel also paint on Canson's pastel paper but I can't mix all the colors, it just stick on the paper, can't do blending either...😓 P.S. Can't paint on Strathmore pastel paper, either
Why my pastels leave so many color dust on the paper and all around? Do I put much pressure? I tried the techniques but the result is no the same as yours :(
no, I sometimes use the fixative in between layers to prevent the previous layer from smudging but it does darken colors quite substantially and it is not a substitute when framing, you will still need to use glass to protect your work
you can use pastels on most papers, as long as it is not glossy as the pastels need tooth to be able to hold onto the paper. although, I suggest you use papers meant for pastels, such as canson miteintes, as they will accept more layers and allow better blending + they come in different colors (it's important not to use white paper when you are starting out)
@jumanas4012 hi there :) yes, you can mix different materials with pastels but pastel pencils are the same pastels just in a harder version. you would need to make sure there is enough tooth to the paper still so as the pencil can add color, if not, use a gritties paper or panpastels not to saturate the tooth of the paper too much to be able to work with pencils on top :)
Can i ask which technique do you usually use most of the time? feels like too many different technique as a newbie in art.. im confused and overwhelmed which to use
9:40 Excuse me but, I saw you using something like a brush together with paper stumps... I didn't get the name of it. Could you write it down for me, please?
hello! I have tried kohinoor and winsor & newton. to tell the truth, I did not see any difference in the two, I think it really does not matter much, as long as it's an artists' grade fixative (not a hairspray) and is suitable for soft materials, such as charcoal and soft pastels. As I do not use fixative in my work (very rarely in the WIP stages), I cannot advise you more than this :)
@@KatiaKotelnikova Thanks for sharing. I must say that I haven't used soft pastels. So I have no experience. But I would like to try. I use oil pastels for the moment. But the question is how do you get the color to stay in the paper. Seems to me that it can easily be erased.
Any non-glossy paper works with pastels. But the disadvantage of cartridge paper is that it is white & compared to pastel paper has less tooth to it so you will not be able to layer as many layers of pastel. I sometimes use watercolor paper, the rough or the cold press one. It holds pastel but does need to be toned before I start any work. hope this is helpful :)
@@KatiaKotelnikova thanks I do have Pune handmade sheet for cake coloures but everyone been telling me to not use it for pastel so I brought cartridge sheet.
soft pastels are always the same as dry or chalk pastels. then there are oil pastels which are completely different medium. so every time you hear soft or hard pastels it's always the dry chalk ones 🙂
The moment you scraped the pastel with your nails gave me shivers!

Thank you for the video! Re watering - what do you do after it gets dry? You put more pigment over or not?
Using the solvents or water is used for underpainting. Then you would continue with the pastels on further top layers.
