According to the playbook, Lancasters cannot use army activation in this scenario. Also Caltrops need to be placed within five hexes of a combat unit, so they couldn't go immediately behind the brook.
Units seem to disintegrate fairly easily in this game. I always thought that it was more of a push and shove affair until one side was fatigued or their morale broke.
