      Well I’m 16 and I find that every one « look the same » at the end of procedures and I’m actually surprised that many people don’t really care about the wonderful genes that are given to them. Looking like my parent is such an incredible feeling but is it still there if we change everything that is unique about us just to fit today’s standards ? Social media affects every one of us even if we can’t see it first but I hope that at the end of the day we realise that social media does not have to represent our life

      Targeting teenagers is a bit irresponsible imo. And I also saw something last week which surprised me. I follow plastic surgery clinic yt channels and there was a lady who had gotten a nose job a few years ago who came back to redo it. My first thought was that I couldn't see anything wrong with it. She said the new trend is to have a slightly upturned nose tip so she was going with the trend and redoing her nose.
      People, please don't follow trends for the sake of following trends.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 Год назад +305

      @@summer-xt1gg This really depends on the type of surgery performed. People who get surgery to fix aesthetic abnormalities (for example people who have a crooked jaw but who have good bite function) are usually really happy with the results because they have made their appearance more normal. They don't typically go on to getting more procedures done.
      This is quite different from normal looking people who increase their bust size with a boob job or increase lip size with fillers. Isabella Demarko talked about the mental health consequences of lip filler that was really eye opening. What can happen is that once you get lip filler you love the new you so much that it causes mental anguish when the lip filler dissipates over time, so you're now stuck with the upkeep of getting fillers every so often in order to keep your mental state at least normal.
      This is a lot like someone who is okay with their appearance, and then one day decides to start using makeup, they like their face so much more with makeup that they start to see their natural self as ugly, then self esteem issues set in and you get people who can't go grocery shopping without makeup.
      Some people get more plastic surgery because they are never satisfied, others because they have body dysmorphia, others because they want attention, and others because they're actually really happy with the changes and are hungry for more because they are perfectionists who treat their body as raw material to mold however they see fit.
      I completely believe you when you say there have been studies that suggest people do not experience increased satisfaction post-surgery, but I think there needs to be some nuance here. It's a such a big field. People get surgery for so many reasons.

    • @meeshmallows
      @meeshmallows Год назад +45

      @@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 I don't think cosmetic surgery and injections can be accurated compared to wearing makeup. Makeup is washed off at the end of the day, you can't wash off your fillers or rhinoplasty. Wearing makeup or different kinds of makeup is more easily done just to achieve a specific aesthetic look, like wearing a miniskirt and boots versus tight pants and sneakers.
      Maybe frequency of makeup usage leading to increased dissatisfied with one's bare face would be more common in teenagers/young adults who are still in the process of feeling comfortable in the world and in their own skin? It's just not something I've personally experienced or heard from any of my friends but we're all over the age of thirty so it might be an age thing.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 Год назад +31

      @@meeshmallows I agree of course that makeup and rhinosplasty aren't the same thing because one washes off and the other is permanent (until you decide to get another nose job). My point was more towards makeup and fillers both being temporary. With fillers it just takes longer for you to get back to your natural self. If someone needs to do makeup every day or have routine filler maintenance in order to not feel bad I think that could be potentially problematic.
      I think low self esteem/low self image is rampant among teenagers and 20 somethings these days. Social media is so obsessed with looks and the use of filters/photo editing creates further unrealistic standards. As Zoe also mentioned people denying they've had plastic surgery when they did get it is also feeding into the problem.

      Good, don’t do it.
      Lord Jesus Christ is coming back everyone, please don’t worship celebrities and entertainment, focus on Him alone. I promise there’s more to life than money, partying, homosexuality and music. Hell is real, repent from sinning confess your sins and ask God to forgive you, I know He will if you’re sincere. Anyone who thinks the Name of Lord Jesus Christ is a joke, boldly mocks and scorns Him or takes pleasure in people who do is in for a big unpleasant surprise on judgement day IF they don’t repent and follow Lord Jesus Christ. Hell is very hot, people please repent! In the mighty name of Lord Jesus Christ, Amen 🙏💪✝️💜❤️✝️!
      Idolatry such as, Islam, Catholicism, Sangomaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Santa Clausism, Confucianism, New Age, Science, Evolution, halloweenism, Harry Potterism, Politics, Donald Trumpism, Easter Bunnyism and other religions/faiths that are outside Biblical Christianity lead to hell! Don’t believe them, believe the Almighty God the Father of Lord Jesus Christ, who begot Him. Our Creator, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is mighty, He doesn’t need a woman to beget a son, He is God. I choose to put my faith in a God who can do anything and everything, a God who has unlimited and infinite power to beget!
      So, it’s time to confess that Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord and to believe that He died and rose from the grave after three days and you shall be saved if you only obey Him by praying, worshipping, praising, reading the Bible and living holy and righteously according to the Bible. You have to endure until the end, carry your cross daily and build your relationship with God by following Lord Jesus daily until the end. You must never renounce your faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, there’s hell awaiting those who reject/deny Lord Jesus Christ and those who continue living sinfully, even the Christians who don’t want to repent will face the same fate, so please repent beloved people, in Lord Jesus Christ’s mighty and precious Name, Amen.

    While we are talking about plastic surgery, I hate it when people, especially men, humiliate women who get plastic surgery to look "attractive". While plastic surgery should not be encouraged for aesthetics, most of these women are getting plastic surgery because of insecurity, making them feel more insecure isn't doing anything productive for anyone. Especially since it comes out of a place of misogyny a lot of the time, like men wanting "real, natural girls" over "plastic girls". It really makes you realize that all these perfect faces exist only on screens due to filters and general algorithms giving attention to a small group of people who just happen to look like that (+ make up, filters, good lightning, good angles, photoshop etc) simply because it is beneficial in a financial way for the companies
      When you look at people in the real life standing in front of you in 3D from all angles (not on the flat screen) with natural light you'll see that normal and natural people look different, always have small "flaws" and usually when you talk to them you don't even pay attention to these "flaws". And they also don't pay attention to your "flaws" unless they're assholes lol. It's honestly what's really beautiful because everyone is different

The thought of me doing anything permanent to my face scared my mother because she thought I would no longer look like her mom which she misses. That's all very touching but I'm not my grandmother. My mom and I had some discussions about this and it was obvious she always felt hurt when we talked about the subject. It was all eventually solved though. I had a friend take professional photos and someone run a simulation of the procedures. If you look at just the "after" photo it's still obviously me, not someone else, and even though you can see something changed you can't pinpoint what has changed until you put the before and after pictures side by side. Then you suddenly see a big improvement.
      My mother saw these and was assured and happy.

    I think that it's great that people are transparent about what they have had done. But I also think that it's best to wait until you're 25, because that's when your brain fully develops, and you'll be able to make important decisions. I'm not saying don't do it, you definetely should if it makes you happy. Just postpone it until you're 25, see how you'll feel then, and then make your decision. And if you still want to go through with it, do your research. Take rhinoplasty for example. A lot of patients aren't aware that actually a small lucky portion of people who have done a nose job, get their desired results with just one surgery. And also, did you know that you can know where your ancestors came from based on how big your nose is? People with smaller noses's ancestors usually come from areas with cold climate. You don't want to breathe in a lot of the cold air and endanger your health. People with bigger noses's ancestors, on the other hand, are believed to have originated from areas with hot and humid climate, making the oxygen levels less dense, and thus requiring bigger nostrils. And another fun fact, most of my friends with small noses are mouth breathers, including me, which causes not so great sleep quality and quite a few health issues. So be aware of the risks before getting a procedure. Everything comes at a price.

To me, when I feel self conscious and want to change something because I hate a part of my body, I just think… I was gifted this by those who lived, fought, and survived through those thousands of years and I’ve ended up with this unique feature because of their struggles. I’m grateful and it gives me a different outlook where I can view my body and face as the history of those whose lives culminated in the existence of me. "No one has plastic surgery for themselves" I think in a lot of cases they do because individuals benefit from the better treatment they get when they are more beautiful. Some, like in SK, do it because becoming more conventionally attractive affords them better job prospects and romantic prospects. Insecure people do it because they want to feel better about themselves. So I think very few people get surgery for the sake of others (for example someone wanting to please their partner who prefers bigger breasts) and most of it is to please themselves.
      I'm not making excuses for it though. I think low self esteem isn't a good reason for surgery.

When I say that you are capable of choosing to get therapy to get better self esteem and that will benefit you just as much as- or more than- gaining false temporary self esteem from pretty privilege would. Especially because the standard is always changing. I still remember when we said people with upturned noses were “pigs” now that’s what girls are showing their surgeons. Changing yourself physically to fit a standard that will disappear is very counter intuitive to seeking happiness or doing something “for yourself”. The only person benefiting is your surgeon/nurse.

      @@summer-xt1gg It's doing something when you benefit from becoming more conventionally attractive. "Pretty privilege" is something you benefit from regardless if you have low self esteem or not. Your life is measurably easier even if you feel no change in your self esteem or self image post surgery. Some beauty standards change, some beauty standards never change. Getting surgery to follow temporary trends is not wise. Yes, the system sucks. But this does not mean you have to marter yourself (by not doing anything to change your appearance temporarily or permanently) in order to make things better or to not be seen as weak.
      I think the real change is going to come from investigating your own biases, preferences, etc. Asking yourself why you have the preferences you have, if that aligns with current norms, what your biases are, how other people's looks and your own looks affect your perception of them and interaction with them, what your preconceived notions are, etc. And encouraging others to do the same. Become more self aware. This doesn't mean I have to shave my hair off and start wearing shapeless linnen dresses in order to not be a hypocrite. There's nothing wrong with engaging in things that make us feel beautiful.

    I understand the "it's womens' choice, let them do what they want" narrative, when looking at it we have to remember that it's a teaction not just to genuine concerns, but also a hypocritic and mysoginistic society that demands these unrealistic standards for women but shames them for trying to meet them. They want all women to look like supermodels, but also not to put in any effort to look like supermodels because that's "false advertising." They've attached a moral worth to beauty and are mad at plastic surgery or makeup for not letting them filter out the ugly people they hate as easily.
    At the same time, just because the harassment is bad, doesn't mean the act that's being shamed is good. The cosmetig surgery indsury is predatory, and built on completely unrealsitic beauty standards. How can we know if the choice to get surgery is an authentic one or not when people are bombarded with these beauty standards and harassed for not meeting them since childhood? Especially teenage girls are so vulnerable to this. I used to catalogue all the flaws i thought my face had (the little crook in my nose, my hooded lids and low eyebrows, my large forehead) and research all the surgeries that could "fix" them when I was *13 years old*
    I'm 19 now, and I don't want to get plastic surgery anymore, but if i had heen offered the chance at 16 i might have raken it, and i would have regretted it now. The problem is the system, not the people the system is exploiting. And whiel it's good to counteract the shaming of women, whether they genuinely wanted the surgery or caved to enormous pressure from society, that does nothing to fix the root problem. The root problem is misoginy, beauty standards, and a money hungry indsutry willing to epxloit people's insecurities to make money off of them.

I'm lucky to have fallen in love with my nose just the way it is before I ever saw any of this, because I could definitely imagine it hurting me when I was younger. Altering my natural, beautiful, self to “fit in” an ever changing “body/face type” trend, I couldn’t be caught dead.
    Ever since I learned about cosmetic procedures, I don’t find celebrities who are hailed as “beautiful”, all that beautiful at all. Because I can see rhinoplasty, brow lifts, skin tightening & where the micro needling has taken place. More minus points if I have seen a before and after. People with unique features used to be scouted till the 80s or maybe even till the mid 00s and the that’s not the case anymore because 1. Nepotism in fashion/modelling & 2. No longer are features unique. Every look is achievable so long as you have money (or manage a discounted/free procedure) & willing to risk a botched procedure.
    And don’t cry “beauty standards those days to me”. What makes you think we don’t have that now? Do you not have a standard of beauty you hope to achieve someday or have already?

    i’m taking sociology of medicine rn and the crazy thing about plastic surgery is how it’s marketed by corporations and promoted as a necessity. specifically how it is marketed to women and how we have deemed certain things as “sicknesses” with “treatments” available, where some “sicknesses” are treated with greater stigma than others. for example, male pattern baldness and erectile dysfunction are considered illnesses and treated as such, but the question is why considering the definition of health. we view surgery for hair implants necessary but breast implants cosmetic. we could also go into doctors that agree to do these procedures not at the benefit of the patient but at the benefit of their bank account and how doctors have been doing this for years (just look into the opioid epidemic and pharm reps) but i digress,

      I think, it would be all fine and dandy, if surgeons would make extra sure they and the patient are informed. Also with modern medicine, before a product or procedure comes to the market, it is tested for years. This does not apply to cosmetic surgery. 1. The surgeon doesn't have to be a studied doctor. 2. There are so many procedures that destroy your body and surgeons only find out about that, years after they had done the procedure on thousands of people.
      So yeah, if you are fine with it and everyone is fine, it would be no problem. But there is a chance you are not fine with when your body gets harmed years after the procedure.
      I hope that if you get a procedure done someday, the surgeon will do you no harm. But I guess chest operations are pretty safe. I am mostly talking about injections. Stay safe.

    I'm a bit annoyed by all of the "everyone is beautiful" comments. This is dismissive of people's lived experiences. Not everyone is beautiful, unless you want drastically redefine the meaning of beauty to include everything and everyone. Being "not beautiful" should also be okay (body neutrality). The problem is society places too much value on beauty to the extent that people think they have no value or worth if they are not beautiful.
    If you don't have unrealistic expectations of plastic surgery, don't think it will fix your self esteem, don't chase trends, have the money and time for it, have thought it over and know the risks, then please yourself and get it if you still want it.
    You also deserve to be free to pursue your own aesthetic preferences. Why is the face you were born with better and more reflective of the real you than the face you would choose for yourself?
    Lots of people against plastic surgery have great arguments against it. However some people just dislike it because they want people to stay in their lane, like crabs in a bucket.

    From a psychological perspective, I only wish that surgeons would do a screening for body dysmorphic disorder with their clients before deciding if they should undergo the procedure they want. There have been many cases of people with BDD who become addicted to plastic surgery to the point that after each procedure, they find something else they don't like/want to fix. Obviously I'm not stating that everyone who undergoes a cosmetic procedure has this disorder, but rather that health professionals should be able to recognize whether someone is going to merely get what they want and move on or hyperfixate in an incredibly unhealthy way post procedure(s).
