- Before you raise any comment please note: As stated in the video this is not the completed installation. We have solar and other works to complete. It is not possible to include all the detail in in just 30 minutes of video! Part two will follow shortly.
Having to stay in the UK for a few months we need to be sure the Camper van which is new to us is working and in tip top condition. The starter battery was old and needed to be changed and when we checked the house battery that was only holding 60% of capacity. We renewed the starter battery and upgraded the house battery to lithium as it was a Black Friday deal we got a bargain 200Ah/2560Wh LiFePO4 battery. Adding a BM712 from Victron and a 1230/12/20 Victron smart charger means we have a great setup with only the solar to add. Here is what we did to the van and yes it was freezing cold!! In 2018 we left the UK to sail around the world slowly. After Brexit, a "Pandemic" and major heart surgery we are still sailing, documenting our travels and showing you what we have learned so far.
We are hoping to complete our journey, and travel right around the world even if we have had a few setbacks along the way. We will continue at our own pace and that may be fast or slow. We want to be sure not to miss anything and have stories to tell our grandchildren when we are old and grey.
We do have a second channel YOUR DRONE TV It is a mix of music from classical to blues, from Opera to Punk all with stunning drone footage.

Nice work and the electrical system is the heart of the ability to live in the van, so well worth the investment.😀👍
It really is! We have quite a bit to still do Norman. But we ran out of time in this video and it was Christmas. LoL
Your kiwi fan here. Another excellent video, thanks for doing it. Please move camera in closer so I can see better what work you did.👍👍
We will try to get more detail in. 👍
You just cannot stop doing projects, can you...? 😉
Your right I cant. There is a second part to this as we are only halfway there to get the lights flashing 😄 We have isolators, fuses and solar to go in yet although a couple of folks missed that 😁 and posted sarky comments..... Full of inaccuracies, I don't bother arguing now i just delete them 🫢
@@SVImpavidus - that has been my philosophy for years 😄
👌👌
So cold in the UK! 🥶
Thank you Ant, nice work! Some time can you explain how the DC to DC charger regulates its demand? Particularly at low rpm levels when the alternator cannot meet demand. How is it that the alternator does not overheat? What limits the Orion current demand?
My boat uses two parallel Orion XS chargers. My Balmar regulator limits the alternator current by reducing the field when it exceeds the temperature limit. It oscillates terribly at that point.
Using the over temp limit is not a great way to control the circuit as its a single point of failure and inefficient.
I'm not sure how they do it and there is no explanation from Victron but if you watch the voltage from the B2B it appears to have a direct link to the amperage output. Being very low at tickover and higher as the voltage increases. We have 2 B2B's when we are gently motor-sailing we switch one off using both when we are motoring hard. This keeps the alternator temp down and the battery chargers cooler. Sail Safe mate. Ant & Cid
You should run the lithium down to zero do not listen to the myths the reason you run them to zero is cos the BMS will kick in and rebalance the cells when charging hence why some of the power banks show messy readings cos the BMS has not rebalanced the cells when charging
It's not recommended by the battery manufacturer. 20% Is the suggested minimum the active balancer is active above 90% charge
