I think you answered your own question about content Mel. I think most (not all) people find video’s about the vloggers holiday as dull as an invitation to a friends house in the 70’s to look at their holiday slides.. Most of us come to RUclips to learn something new..
I know what you’re saying but my video is nothing like that at all it’s fast paced and funny
People watch you for the van builds and your different techniques regarding van things, to be honest I didn't watch the last video as it was just a holiday, we like seeing you do things Mel!! Love these sort of vids
@@mattbee7885 thank you for your taking the time to write and keeping it real i really appreciate the feedback 🤙
Theres a few myths about batteries. Some think a half charged 12v is 6v!
The table is as follows:-
12.7v or more = fully charged
12.5 = 75% charged
12.4 = 50% charged
12.2 = 25% charged
12 or under it's flat!
Cant see 11volt starting a diesel engine.
Wow thank you so very much for taking the time to comment I’ll post this to the top of comments hopefully helps someone else 🫶🤙
12v or under is not entirely flat, but a battery can become damaged if cycled too low, and won't usually start below 12v - 11.9 is 40% - 12.2v is around 65% - search online for a state of charge chart. Also a battery which is in use or under load will read lower voltage - that doesn't mean the battery is low. Battery state must be read while the battery is without load.
12.6+ - 100%
12.5 - 90%
12.42 - 80%
12.32 - 70%
12.2 - 60%
12.06 - 50%
Why didn’t you just check the alternator output to start with…?! Should be a rock steady 14.2v. Top tip for the future reader, if you spend just five minutes taking the offside front inner arch plastic out you can see and get to all four alternator bolts very, very easily. A medium length bar on the tensioner bolt just to slip the belt off. You’re much better off getting a new regulator fitted to the original MB Bosch / Valeo alternator, aftermarket remans aren’t ever as good.
Thank you that’s very helpful 🤙
When I was working in vehicle transport, we had a fair few of these vans with smart alternators that had had the alternator ruined by people jump starting them with either another van or jump packs.
Mel love watching your vlogs. Its good to see you looking happy. If im honest I thought your Barn blogs were incredible, so disapointed that it ended the way it did. I honestly hope you still remain friends with some of the gang. Id love to see you meet up with Adz again. Looking forward to your next vlog❤
I enjoy your channels relative to what my hobbies are and that’s motorhomes, especially the vario because even though I don’t have one I do like them , and pay no attention to the negative comments, no one forces them to watch
Thank you 🙏
Hi Mel, I am surprised that you haven't got a solar supply going to your vehicle battery. I have a dual solar controller that allows you to choose how much power you want to go to each battery. I have 90% going to the leisure battery and 10% to the vehicle starter battery. A trickle charge to keep it topped up.
I have found that most people are not interested in holidays that are videoed. I put out over 20 from a three month trip we did. The most views I got were 120 on one of the videos and the least I had was 12. As you say, you put a lot of effort in for little return. I have found that spur of the moment videos do better.
Good to see that the alternator swap did the trick, and now you can see if your battery will keep the charge after a ride while having been charged with 14.1 volts 👍👍👍
@@petermastenbroek7719 thank you so far all ok 👍
Well I loved your holiday video. I shall never go there so now I know what is there. I live in the Scottish Borders and will be travelling to the Isle of Mull and onto Ardnamurchan where I used to live. I hope I run into you.
SAD
Well we liked your holiday one Mel,if someone is interested in going there you gave the heads up what to do.
Thank you I’m pleased someone like it 🫶🤙
Might be worth stripping the old alternator down an see if any of the diodes have gone
@MeMyDrone we have a great local auto electrician who will replace your alternator with another that he personally refurbished.
The way we see it.. we know you now as an acquaintance and watch all videos as it’s lovely to keep up with what your both doing. A lot of folks follow ypu for van related advice and knowledge. So I can understand why your holiday vlog may not have done so well. It is a shame as I completely understand how long it all takes too. Love to you both ❤
Well done on sorting it out Mel, and I for one enjoyed the Maldives stuff, and the Cyprus stuff. Vans are good, travel is my thing.
Thank you 🤙
Not to sound ungrateful for your hard work ,but you know that feeling when someone gets out their holiday photos 😂 means a lot for those who had the holiday but not so much for everyone else . Either way your efforts will always be appreciated by myself and many others.

New to this channel....great job diagnosing the problem (I learned a bit from you) and getting the alternator in, brother.
Awesome to hear you’re digging the channel! Van life is a wild ride, and I’m stoked to share the ups and downs with you!
I empathise with the pain and suffering of your breakdown. Women take note of how real men suffer! The cold water down the arse crack was a particular highlight. Taking it all with good humour was inspiring. Well done !
Oh my gosh I thought I had edited that part out Ops thanks for the positive comment really appreciated 🫶🤙
Glad you see the light have van will travel not holidays diving building this vlog was on the ball dealing with real life van problems more travel no food setting up and living happy travels
Real life van problems are like speed bumps on the road to adventure-just gotta navigate around them and keep cruising for the good times!
Hey Mel great stuff👍🙏
I added a BLUETTI DC charger recently to my transit,,,and although i lowered the power consumption of the charging,(like you taught me )
My alternator crapped itself with a day,,.my replacement alternator also crapped itself,,
I now dont run the DC charger ,until i know why this is happening
Oh my word that’s interesting I wonder if it’s the charger that is causing the issue! Have you still got both alternator’s? Maybe get them looked at by an electrician see if they can tell if they both have the same problem. Are you brave enough to risk damaging the 3rd one? Please let me know any updates my friend I’d be very interested to know if it’s the Bluetti charger so I could warn others about this 🫶🤙
Something to be said about you having some "personal" down time away from youtube i think, ultimately its down to you Mel but i for one am interested in the "Vanlife" side of things and your expertise there. Welcome home 👍
I appreciate that you have taken the time to comment and for keeping it respectful and positive 🫶🤙
To be honest I enjoy watching your videos, and a lot of it is because its you. So yeah the holiday video wasn't van related but I still enjoyed it, including you nearly falling over in the sea. Yeah I get that finding content can be hard at times when you do it for so long, but I appreciate it and can vote with my feet if I don't want to watch it, seems simple enough. Keep ya chin up mate
Thank you for the positive feedback really appreciated
I second that emotion. It’s nice to have a bit of variety, run the full gamut Mel. It’s good to see you both getting away from the van and getting refreshed.
Good vlog and bugger the comments about the Maldives they didn't have to watch it
@@tonydean1262 Thank you for the positive vibes really appreciated 🤙
I agree.
Sounds like most didn't 😂
Welcome back! Easy way to check if your alternator is working , start the van, put a multimeter across the battery and check the voltage, should between 13.5 v and 14.5 v. Hope Becky is ok after her open water fiasco, it can put a lot of people off, will she be trying again?
Total waste of time to do that when he has a volt meter installed to do that exact thing .
Mell we had a chinese heater it went wrong....we then changed it to a Maxpeedingrods heater still made in China but its pump comes filled with deisel and is SUPER QUITE on setting two when warmed up and it ramps down You CAN'T HERE IT AT ALL i actually had to get under the van to check it was actually working.
Well done 👍
Mel, highly unlikely it's your jump pack, remember voltage drops current flow increases that causes all sorts of problems.
A good multimeter helps diagnose low charge, I understand there's the plug in voltmeter but another source confirms failure.
Lead acid won't take deep discharge, deep cycle will ...access hoists etc...these won't sulphate up like your van battery will.
You can test each cell by going on a terminal post and if the tops are accessible put the probe into the first cell it should read 2v... work along until you've tested all 6 (12v).If it's down on a cell you'll read it...2v 4v 5v that would indicate third cell down a volt...you get the picture.
Good luck.
great work as always , i enjoyed your holiday video as well, don`t take it to heart you can`t please everyone all the time
Thanks 👍
Your a smashing bloke mate and we like you regardless of the negative comments. Your positive attitude and vibes are why I watch and love your crack. Please try to scroll past the negative and focus on the positive ones. Can't wait to see you have a trip to Scotland in the big whens shes ready
Maybe a good idea to have a relay switched by the ignition (and a bit beefy wire) which allows power from the household batteries to charge the vehicle battery if the van is not running... That way the solar setup can keep a charge on all the batteries and you should not have to do any boosting or jumping...
Great idea 🤙
Thanks Mel we enjoy all your video's.
Thank you for taking the time to write really kind of you 🤙
FWIW I enjoyed the Maldives video, looked great, I wouldn't have even minded being near the sea plan terminal, can't think I'd ever get bored of watching that!
Your channel, you film what you like. And aye next time you go on holiday enjoy it and relax 👍👍
Thank you, I will🤙
Hi Mel , i remember you fitting a dc to dc charger and saying your alternator was making a funny noise as if it might be struggling with it ?
Yeah that’s right
Hi Mell, why doesn’t your solar charge the starter battery? Mine does. I know it’s winter, but it still helps 👍🏻 would like to see more diving videos and adventures like you did when I first came across you on RUclips 👍🏻

Can you expand on how to be cautious using the jump pack Mel. I have one, but never used it. So I'm wondering how to use it safely. Cheers Ian
To be fair I’m not hundred percent sure if it was my jump pack that was at fault
Hi Mel
I find you entertaining so I watch all your videos I thought that last week was well put together and informative as always
I look forward to seeing you in Scotland we love it up there and all being well we will be there in May
Might be worth getting that old alternator rebuilt as a backup..
Yes 👍
Mel you seem to have a few moaning Minnie’s when they refer to the holiday vids - I watch for your personality and presentation style - plus the content 👍👋
It’s a funny eld place RUclips, I had a getaway also and hardly anyone has watched it , took a lot of time etc with travelling paying in a castle etc then again I could sit where I was and do a bit of van work and boom , views . I didn’t watch your holiday either but I hope you both had a good time
It’s a funny old game for sure 👍
Great vlog 👍
Thank you 😊
1:49 If you had a few dead batteries in a row your battery may be damaged and will not accept a charge as well as a fresh one.
also the voltmeter can be considered a parasitic draw on the battery. Maybe get a battery isolation switch to prevent any possible parasitic draw in the future... A fully charged lead/acid battery should keep a healthy charge (if disconnected) for months...
Thanks 🙏
Great content, I admire your patience and resilience 👍👏x
Thank you! 🤙
1st thing noticed Mel , You pulled the Batt Terminal off , didnt see you Slack it off...that Wouldnt help ..
Those Booster Packs are ok ,There Circuitry in them To Stop Blowing Anything Bud , Belt Tensioned up ok Initially?

I look forward to seeing your Scotish trip videos too, it's a van holiday 😀 Make sure you check out Northumberland on your way north 👍🏻
I’ve not watched the Maldives video yet for a few reasons, first one is I prefer the van stuff but the main reason is that the weather here has been horrendous and watching a video about you having a great time on a sunshine island made me extremely jealous.
Crazy all that to get to the batery don't worry about negative comments you will always get that I find you very informative and entertaining and I am an ex mechanic

Don’t take this the wrong way but I hate it when Rebecca is in your videos, I like the van related ones, I find her hard to watch and quite unpleasant almost rude. Would not of said this but you asked.
Wow... Talk about rude!
How can you not take this the wrong way ? Your on the wrong platform chump
Van videos rock baby
So it would seem 😂🫶🤙
Hi Mel
Just a bit of advice , NEVER disconnect a battery with the engine running as this alone can damage the voltage regulator in the alternator and can blow modules in the van causing all sorts of issues. You can just replace the regulator and brush assembly in the alternator which is normally the issue 90% of the time and costs a fraction of the cost of a new alternator. The battery needs to be checked with a a proper tester to understand the SOH of the battery , and you also need to check for any parasitic draws when all the modules go to sleep and the van is locked. 👍
Doubt the jump pack was to blame , When you thought the alternater was getting noisy and the charge system had a discharge condition during the previous two weeks . I would think the voltage regulator at the back of the alternator has failed . It holds the brushes as well . Repair the old one . pull it apart install new bearings and a chinese copy regulator and you will have a good spare . Not mentioning a good lesson and video subject . Card board cartoons are my go to for ground cover when working on bitumen surfaces .
That’s not a bad idea and yes it would make an interesting video thank you 🫶🤙
Good you're back Mel!
Thank you 🫶🤙
Hey Mate,... great work on you swapping out old for new... you made it look simple.
we get the how much time it takes to edit.. I have a question 🤔 where did you get steering lock 🔐 .? might have to invest in one of those. 😊 cant wait for your detecting video, and Scotland diving sounds awesome.😊..
I've used a jump pack on my car almost everyday in the last 2 months. I think my 4k dash cam drains the battery a lot. But...even after I've jump started it. It shows 14.2 v. So I don't think a jump start can do any damage during a lot of use. Great bit of kit. Saves all that old fuss of getting another car and getting the long jump leads out
Yeah I’ve used mine many times and never had issues so maybe it’s just my alternator that was faulty to begin with
@BigVanSmallWorld at least yours looked fairly easy to get to. Mine will be a nightmare on a vauxhall vivaro from what I've seen lol
@ good luck with it 🤞
Hi Mel. get a small DCDC and wire it from the leisure to your starter battery and disable it. IF/When you have a flat stater battery, engage the DCDC to charge the starter battery, hassle free jumper pack.
Unless you plan on running the same size cable the starter has they'll be undersized and possibly melt. Starters draw up to 300 amps.
@dor843088 useless reply. Where do you get 300A from?? 😂 Also it's a completely different circuit ya muppet 😂
@holdenman8850 I'm a mechanic of 25 years iv forgotten more about 12 volt circuits than you'll ever know.

I’ll be honest with you Mel, I’m currently full time in a van after a 22 year split! Thought I had the perfect life but sadly things change so fast that now I’m a single man living in a van. The last thing I want to see (as sad is it may sounds) is someone living it up abroad when thats what I would normally be doing. 😢. Nothing against you or your life, just being honest. Shits hit the fan for me, but you shouldn’t worry my mate, you should enjoy every second! ❤
I’m really sorry to hear that you’re having a rough time right now I know only to well how quickly life can change trust me I’ve been through it all and I’ve come to terms with that I once had a big house and now I’m technically homeless but I’m not going to let that stop me from living an amazing life fact is that if I was living in a house paying rent there’s no way I could have been able to go to buttlins let alone the Maldives. Stay strong my friend and you will get through this and when you do you will be stronger than ever 🫶🤙
@ wow thank you for the reply Mel, I don’t have anything at all against you loving life, if anything it shows where I can be in the near future, was just a reply as to why me personally skipped the video. I watch all your videos, I even bought the charger 1 and replaced my renogy inverter thanks to your video, it’s been a game changer, the difference is amazing. No more random weird charging that I had with the renogy, like going from 36% to 100% in 4 minutes, like wtf!!! I don’t get any of that with the charger 1. I use about 12% per day from my AC200Max and it’s recharged in 20mins driving! That’s thanks to you! I appreciate you and your videos, that’s why I replied, you asked something from us viewers so thought it best to be truthful from my perspective. Take care and keep them coming! And ultimate keep living life my friend!!!
Hey Mel, fun fact for you 1/2" is slightly smaller than 13mm :) the only one that is exactly the same it 5/16" and 17mm. P.s you can get that old Alternator reconditioned for a spare, just look for a auto elec engineers.
Good trick mel about the battery disconect and alternator 👍 maybe you need a new battery or altenator, put a date on batteries....£300 is that with the surcharge ?
Don't throw your old alternator away, would've only needed to change the rectifier, around £20. put a new rectifier on it and you'll have a spare.

I don't know if you check the comments left on 10-month-old videos but having watched a few videos about water heating, especially yours I have the following question/comment. Would it be possible to have a pre-heater dedicated to only heating water and not running off/connected to the engine water system? The engine water system is a closed loop, so would it be possible to have a smaller (shorter pipes) dedicated anti-freeze closed loop system? Possibly with its own dedicated small tank if required. This would surely result in hotter, quicker anti-freeze = hot water quicker.
Potentially
I watched the Maldivian video (loved it) and are still working out how I can justify the spend, 36 years married now, 40th anniversary maybe or just several European holidays for the same money? We’ll see? As for the Alternator, it’s not good to run the engine at idle if the battery is flat or low as the heat produced at low revs is enough to dry out the bearings and/or damage the rest of it, just something that I’ve learned over time! All the best Andy.
At least you’ve got the video to look back on, treat it like a memory from a lovely time away. 👍🏻
@david1976aful exactly that thank you 🫶🤙
You should do an autopsy on the old alternator and recondition it as a spare its not to difficult to do m8
@@Starchaserpaige oh yes I did think exactly that too so I’ve put it in my lockup to save for a future project 🤙
Once upon a time you'd buy bits from a shop on an "exchange" basis - ie. you'd take the old one in and get a discount off a new (or reconditioned one). I suspect times have changed though as it's been a very long time since I changed an alternator (or dynamo!)

Well, as you know… We love any and all of your content!
Do they do core returns in the UK? I was wondering if that 300 was with a core charge or not?
(In the US, if you bring the old one back- the “core” - they give you 20-30% of the purchase price back. They sell those off to refurbishment shops and that’s where they get the rebuilt ones from.)

Couldn’t you just have replaced the voltage regulator pack for £20 on the alternator. It always works for me.
Usually it’s the brushes or the diode in the pack that go.

Yep - van related stuff for sure. To my shame I didn't watch all the way through. Most people here are hands on guys and gals who are keenly aware that none of us are as smart as all of us - quietening the ticking diesel pump for example. Metal detecting underwater falls into that bracket as there is the "Wonder if..." component.
My heart bleeds for you Mel - I was saying "Please be a fuse..." Then the heart in mouth moment followed by relief when the engine staggered into life.
Mell we can not smell the shit ....thing you do for own entertainment. Thanks you mell
I watch most of your videos but I never got any type of notification that you had sent out a video while you're on vacation! There's other RUclipsrs as well that had mentioned as soon as they go off script from what the algorithms actually say they should be making their videos about, those videos are not shown. So maybe RUclips is saying that your videos that they'll show are only van related videos. The way that other RUclipsrs got around that is by starting a second channel that deals with other interests they have. Maybe in your case: vacations, metal detecting and other things that's not van related.
Hi Mel you should get a Topdon JS3000 engine starter. Its brilliant on flat batteries.
I really appreciate the tip! I'll definitely look into getting a Topdon JS3000 to keep my van life on the road!
Charge the the battery fist Mel
You still with that Bird from Stroud?
Spear-Fishing? .. Hunting??? ... Commonly known as 'Poaching!!' 🥴😵💫 .... You DID! try the old 'remove-replace-remove-replace' The electric 'block' on your alternater first! - Sometimes it's just festered connections 🤨.... Good luck Mel 🤠
How would your engine keep running when you have an electrical fuel switch please? Also what was the alternator producing volts wise?
He shows it at the end. 14.1v 👍
I got a feeling it’s going to rain a regular physic he is just teasing he is in Britain after all
lol 😂
I'm not sure if your booster thingy could have blown your alternator, as long as it outputs the correct voltage. The current it supplies will be on demand, so it can't give more than your flattery needed (geddit? Flat battery = flattery?) I think the only thing that the booster can do wrong is not hold a charge or not be able to supply the correct current and in that case it won't work. You may pick up problems if you cross connect positive and negative, but I think you're too smart to do that.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights really appreciate that you didn’t jump to conclusions that I was dump enough to make a simple mistake like getting the wrong way round 😂🫶🤙
