i did something similar in my 2013 chevy volt. i added a 15w silicone heating pad connected to a thermostat and a ptc fuse to keep it above freezing. my car also has 200w of flush mounted flexible solar on the roof which charges the 12v system independintly of the car so it can never go flat. i made a 4s, 32ah lifepo4 battery with those square cells and put it inside of a 30 cal ammo can. didnt use a bms coz that seems like a bad idea in a car, instead i used an inductive active balancer. the whole project cost me about 50 bucks and gives me more usabale capacity than the 220$ agm battery i replaced. the main reason was for lower internal resistance and -55lb in weight. thats the same as getting a titanium performance exhaust on a regular ice car. chevy volt is one of the few cars that can get away with this because the motor and ac are both ran from the high voltage battery and the battery is in the trunk/inside and not exposed to temp swings of an engine under the hood. i am also building 8kwh range extenders that are removable and fit perfectly inside of 20mm ammo cans. they are about 90lb each and cost around 250 bucks usd to build with 280ah lifepo4 cells, same way no bms. bms is responsible for most fires anyways. i documented a lot of this on the chevy volt forums under the gen1 -> modifications section if anyone is interested.
And trunk mount battery thats bullit proof is why a Volt or Bolt is worth extra money.Prius batteries and operating systems suck.They need to be replaced after 5 years no matter the mileage !!!!!! Suckers...

@@ekeretteekpo3004 inductive active balancer, basically a dumb bms with much more balance ability and no thermal/voltage protections. those are handled by the all in one inverter. its a portable range extender for my phev with a 200$ 3kw 24v hybrid inverter by powmr (220v, basically level 2). charges thru a j1772 cord at free chargers and does pass through charging to my car. i did say where i put a lot more details, you cannot link here on youtube cmts. look up stories on here about people who had a cell drop from their bms and it caused the bms to overcharge and thermal runaway large format 280ah lifepo4 cells if you want more information.
You're very brave to disconnect the battery while the engine is running. A power surge can destroy the electronics. The soldered connections are unsuitable for 300A current. The rest is very nice work, although I would have separated the balance wires (next to the BMS connector) with Kapton tape, currently they touch each other.

I don't want to comment on the use, rather on the construction. Nice work, but it's enough to damage one cell and it degrades the entire battery capacity. Also, the cells used should be tested and selected with the same properties as possible. The BMS should support balancing in amperes, otherwise balancing the cells takes a very long time.
great Job, the only Thing i did not like is the Thermal Dissipation. The Battery is complete isolated and has noc Room to cool down if it is at too much load.
Love the welder... But that nickel😮 Why not use sandwiched with nickel and copper to keep it more safe. And soldering with that skinny thing those wires to the main output looks more of a joke. There's so much heat and vibration going on.. And why sealing the wrapping with that white "silicone" i think and then overkill using other sealing on the battery case😅

Does the BMS take the 14v and boost it to at least 16v to charge the batteries? Otherwise it will likely stay at 10% charge consistently until the voltage drops to around 12v. It will last a long time, but will rarely get 100% charge unless there is a step up voltage or the alternator output is increased. That alone can effect the vehicle electrics.

I'll answer for him... you're right, you need a correct charging system from the alternator to give it a constant voltage, never mind thinking about cranking power needed, you can't use it straight from the alternator to charge it (prob modern ones with constant voltage Amps, with Dc-Dc might) can't swap a Lead acid with a LifePo4 battery one for the other, you have to check requirements and use a suitable BMS/charging system, watch the end of the video, he checks everything and you can tell he's got the correct charger.
It's better not to do that. Yes, the BMS board on the battery can ptotect from the overcharging, but the explosiveness of those batteries require at least two systems to control the voltage. So a specialized charging device is needed.

My only issue is why is there a USB port on it???? The voltage meter I can understand but why a USB port. It's under the hood so it's not like you're going to be using it and it's going to get full of dirt and dust and everything else so it renders it useless.

Why not? I always know that most people change car battery while engine running so that ecu and other configuration will not reset.

I just cut my LiFePO4 battery, and it only produced a lot of smoke-no fire at all. Battery technology seems to be good now.

Во Вьетнаме конечно работать будет, там тепло. На морозе литий ферум здыхает. Пока не отогреешь)) зимой не заведешь.
Литий железо в отличие от литий ионных не боятся мороза и прекрасно работают в северных районах Росии.

full charge of 4s lifepo4 is 14.6v. so the battery wont overcharge.
Voltage is not that important...amps are destroying the lithium batteries...
