Tesla Cybertruck First Test! Can it Handle Going Off-Road? | MotorTrend

- We finally got our hands on a Tesla Cybertruck - time to put it through its paces. However, we weren’t interested in doing all the surface-level things you’ve seen in other Cybertruck videos, we wanted to actually drive it. On-road, off-road, through mud, dirt, and rain - everything we could possibly do to test its limits, and try to make our minds up on this “truck”.

What are your thoughts on the Tesla Cybertruck?
It is a very stupid car.
It's the best sport adventure truck in the world. Work truck second.
It's garbage. Please stop covering this like it was a viable passenger vehicle! It is not!
The PT Cruiser turned lots of heads when it came out and people still know exactly what it is when they see it in traffic….. looks are a poor measure of longevity.
You can’t think of any other car that people know what it is by looking at it??? Motortrend used to be a respectable automotive media company, you’re just vanilla garbage now.
This video is almost 12 minutes and the presenter doesn't do any off-roading until 8 minutes in. JFC, Motor trend.
Thanks
That's more offloading than they will ever see in the wild.
Reported for spam.
Thank you I IMMEDIATELY turned it to the 8 minute mark 😅
Thanks yo
I can name 20 different vehicles off the top of my head that anyone would recognize just by looking at it. 🤷🏻♂️
Like what? There certainly are a few, maybe Jeep (Wrangler), VW Beetle? Maybe Mustang, Prius, maybe DeLorean. But plenty of people, like your average grandma or 5 year old, isn't going to be able to identify a Honda Civic or Ford F-150 from 100 yards away
@@StalePhish Anyone can ID an F-150. Or a hummer, any BMW/Mercedes, etc.
@@StalePhish This poster didn’t list any kind of demographic or age group. So why should I be restricted by such?
1. Lamborghini Countach (any year)
2. Chevrolet Chevelle (60’s or 70’s)
3. Trans Am
4. Dodge Charger (any year but especially the newer ones)
5. Pontiac GTO or Lemans (especially the early models)
6. Dodge Challenger (everybody and their cousin has one)
7. Corvette (any year)
8. Ford mustang. (Take your pick)
9. Camaro (again any year)
10. Ford Taurus (#1 selling car in America for ELEVEN straight years)
There’s ten. Now I can keep going if needed. 🤷🏻♂️
@@StalePhishYou just listed like 5😂 also hummer comes to mind and Porsche and Gwagon even a town car.
LOL
first time I've heard anyone claim 1/4" thick panels ...
think about that a minute !!!
A quick Google search says the Cybertrucks steel panels are 1.8 mm thick for the doors and 1.4 mm thick for the rest of the body. Way less than a 1/4 inch.
It's not gargantuan, it's the size of a normal full size pickup truck! 🙄
Technically yes, but no transmission and no engine means the inside feels cavernous. And the fact it can lift all the way to 17.4in in extract mode, plus has that slope on the bed, it definitely has a totally different presence then a standard truck.
@@syspowertools3372 I gotcha, that does make sense!
The prototype in 2019 was gargantuan.
@@syspowertools3372
Don't look like no truck to me!!🤮
I know that most people don't like it, but I like the way it looks.
You should see reactions irl. Basically everyone loves it when they see it in person. Celebrities get out of their truck and people ignore them to take pictures of the truck.
@@syspowertools3372it's not every day that you get the opportunity to photograph a train wreck
@@boardskinsdeadass 😂
The only reason anyone thinks people don’t like the look is because of paid smear campaigns like MotorTrend is more than happy to be a part of. 😢
@syspowertools3372 my only reaction is "man that rich person is an idiot "
This is the modern day DeLorean but there will be no timeless movie to keep its memory alive.
Who is this guy? Doesn't seem to have any clue about what he's talking about.
Tech nerds aren’t always car people.
The footage speaks for itself. The truck's useless being a truck. Zero articulation for trails. Some great ideas but is essentially just a prototype of technology.
I’ll just wait for the WhistlinDiesel test
That would be epic!
Horrible review. 90% of it was about the looks and how it "exhilarates" you. Motortrend has definitely lost its mojo.
I'd like to see you make a better one.
@@444thunderstr0ke Anyone could. Pretty much everybody in the world except this guy can tell more vehicles just by looking at them than just the Cybertruck.
Did he really just say u can’t identify a car just by looking at it beside that one?? I don’t think he should be reviewing cars
He shouldn't be reviewing anything.
Exactly. I immediately thought about the VW beetle and MB g-wagen. How are those not immediately recognizable.
I think he means it’s very easily identifiable for people who know nothing about cars... idk though
A Volkswagen Beetle from any year will always be more identifiable from any angle than probably any other car in history. Because even non car people know what it is.
@@keithhunt3437that will be true of cybertruck
Porsche 911
Pretty much everyone knows what it is just by looking at it.
Yep, or anything Lamborghini in the last 40 years.
My Mom wouldn’t know either or those, but she’d know a Volkswagen Beetle.
Land Rover Defender. Jeep Wrangler. Corvette, of any generation. VW Van.
@@CS-rx2gxprobably a vw bus too and a hummer
Can't think of any cars that people know just by looking at them aside from the Tesla Truck???? WHAT?!?!

Give me Newbern and Cotton’s review of that truck. That’s what I want to see!
Motortrend… you’re a little late to the scene with the cyber truck reviews
The cybertruck is a social media status icon first then a truck.

is the tesla cybertruck in store for sale now in vancouver?
Hearst Media drops the ball, once again.
A CORVETTE one look 👀 it’s a corvette every american 🇺🇸 knows
You do realize Tesla is American too 🤣
Or a Jeep Wrangler. Or Dodge Viper. Or Hummer. I could go on and on.

Cyber truck re upholstered with leather looks the best
How safe is that thing for pedestrians or other vehicles, when it impacts them?
It’ll be quick and painless 🤷♂️
It's gonna be the same as any other truck slamming into a pedestrian.
That motortrend article on climate change was a real doosie. I wish hagerty all the best and motortrend… well… who cares outside of boomers
LMAO I reckon a basic awd suv with all season tyres could have done that “off-roading” but ok.

Quarter inch thick steel. That seems wrong.
It's over tons.
There’s no way those panels are a 1/4” thick.

Bring back RoadKill.
Is this the same truck they have been beating up and letting other companies test for months? If so, it's doing well. It's also an early production model.
Can anyone answer why it is so ugly.
I don't know what's worse, a midsize pickup that can potentially cost up to $100,000 that doesn't have a driver's display or the video that doesn't do any off-roading until 8 minutes in.
"Tossing me back and forth"
I;m sorry, are you critiquing the truck or the dirt road you're driving? EVERY truck does that on a dirt road...😂
No, they don't. Drive a Raptor and see how well it absorbs the bumps.

The Cybertruck too, just have to configure the suspension right.

I wonder how much this attack on Tesla cost.
What happens when the object at motion abruptly becomes an object at rest
The electric pontiac aztec lol
So you're saying I could drive through an F5 tornado going and come out the other side unscathed?
Well, no, you'd probably die. Truck may or may not be okay.
Probably yes.

I'm pretty sure he meant to be inside the truck.
@@andrasbiro3007 I get that. But he'd die inside the truck after being slammed around the interior, assuming he wasn't sucked out a window, lol.
@@user-cn8nu6lq4w
I think the CT is too heavy to be thrown around.
The body will survive practically anything, and the windows are very hard to break.
One thing is for sure, if you get caught by an F5 in a car, the CT is probably your best chance.
There are NO other cars that everyone knows what it is when they see it...
Except like, Mercedes, BMWs, _Priuses,_ F150s, Lambos, Ferarris, Hummers, Corollas....
Tesla's specialty is to _Think Different..._ which is literally Apple's slogan.
The people who buy this are the same ones who pay for the blue check mark on twitter.

It’s not the power of Tesla, it’s the fugliness of that monstrosity.
stainless steel truck.
Cybertruck.. is out the box car for now..
What a hit piece 🙄
Yeah Im Not About This... At All! 😬
Where the freak is the off road? This is the dumbbust video I have seen in a while
LIE ABOUT THE DOOR CRUSHING FINGERS IT HAS A SAFE STOP WHEN FIRST OPENED. you deliberately opened the door in this video to deactivate it SHAME
Either way he was able to do it what if you forget something and open it again he didn't lie about anything
That would be a great vehicle to LS swap!
It’s funny how nobody checks the panel gaps and if parts are secured properly like they do with Tesla I’m JS give it a fair shake and do that same thing for all vehicles
That's because it generally wasn't notable up until Tesla made gaps large enough to fit a small child in.
just watch video and ignore the gibberish talk
NO
*This individual appears as though he has just mastered riding a tricycle and proceeded directly to critique a CyberTruck which he clearly has no clue about what he's talking about.*
All the panels are different shades.
No their not. It's stainless steel. Since it's like a mirror almost, it takes the color of anything it reflects.
@@kibukun Balderdash.
You can clearly see different shades in the doors while the truck's orientation changes. The DSRD is cleary 2-3 shades darker and more smoked than the DSFD. Others are blue in color while others have a gray shade in the same light.
Anyone with OCD would be driven crazy by this vehicle.
I think what you're seeing isn't different color shades, it's just different grains in the stainless. As the light hits it, the different grains bounce off the light differently. I would assume there's a challenge in making the stainless' grain follow throughout the body. In anyway, I would agree that it is bothersome. If I owned one, I'd be constantly double taking the body for that.
@@jhnde8495 I think you're right.
@kibukun 1000% correct. You can't get different colors from the stainless unless it was heat treated. The panels are formed in a new air pressure process.
IS not a truck and is not 4wd capable any other truck will run circles around cybertruck
I've yet to see a review of this monstrosity that shows what it's name describes, a Truck!
Is it a road or off roader, who cares.
I want to know how much payload it carrys
zero info about offroad capabilities...
I’ll save everyone time. Almost no off-roading in this video and nothing I haven’t don’t in a 20 year old Subaru forester
Cybertruck won't age well. People are already getting tired of it. I passed that point long ago, but let's see where this is in a year or two. No way they're selling millions of them.
Does dude really just cry about the tonneau cover might not work in 10 to 15 years? Wow. Complains about panel gaps and then doesn't show them. Wow
The guy in the hat looks ridiculous, doubt he's ever been on a date and still lives at home

Thank you for the review, I personally think it the ugliest vehicle in production, I can’t see myself ever owning one. I am not sold on electric vehicles, I think they need years more development

And the build quality of the first few hundred cars are bad for all mass produced cars. It takes time to dial in the line. The newer ones are practically perfect.

It looks like about 3 inches of suspension travel none at full height and wait until that windshield gets broken I'm thinking 1500$ - 3000$ 😊
Gargantuan vehicle that is the same size as all giant pick up
Well this was a dumb episode.
If that is progress... it must be a work in progress. That is the most unattractive vehicle EVER made.
So what did the designers use a bunch of cardboard boxes to make this?
Wow- the flex on that thing is terrible.

It’s actually not

can some one talk about truck capabilities and not talk again about all the useless technology
I thought the Pontiac Azteck was the worst looking car ive ever seen, until i saw a Tesla Cyber truck.
And at least they were practical
anyone who buys a cyber truck will never take it off pavement lets be honest
Few trucks are taken off road. It will likely blow the doors off any gas truck off roading once the software enables locking hubs.
@@donaldhenderson1870Not with that terrible articulation, it won't.
Seems like an oxymoron for it to be the safest vehicle in the world but you can really see when turning around corners
It's not that big deal, there are cars with far worse visibility.
Don’t like Tesla and I don’t understand the hype. A truck worth more than 90K should NEVER have panel gaps and loose panels. The Cybertruck looks like a low resolution polygon where Tesla could’ve easily made a more appealing design.
I don't know where they got this one, I've seen dozens and all were far better. The new ones are near perfect.
Early build quality is always bad for all mass produced cars, it takes time to dial in the line.
This dude is clueless, dont waste your time watching the video

That's intentional, it was inspired by 80's sci-fi (Blade Runner) and some iconic cars (Lamborghini Countach). Also the shape makes it much stronger.
