Exactly. Panting your face to mimic a black person is different from blackface. Context and meaning is key. The issue is that 99.9% of the time it's just blackface. The role of Lincoln Osiris was an example of that 0.1 percent.

If do a blackface routine without the makeup, it would still be offensive. If you did a serious role grounded in respect and love with the makeup, it shouldn't be.

When my wife, and I first watched Tropic Thunder. She went to do something in the kitchen. Warming up pizza, or what ever. She ended up missing the fake opening credits, and a few other scenes. She came in during the scene where Stiller got his hands blown off, and he couldn't cry. As the movie went on she got more, and more pissed. She only wanted to watch the movie to see RDJ. She kept saying "When the hell is RDJ gonna show up?" After like the 5th time of her saying this I told her "RDJ has been in almost ever scene so far" She didn't know he was the black guy until he did the I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude. And then he broke the mirror, fell on the floor, and took his wig off. Her face! That was the funniest thing every.

Robert NEVER played a black man, he’s never said anything racist, he’s never come against black people! The reason why the black community never came for him, is because we understand the freakin plot of the movie! I’ve watched Tropic Thunder so many times and it’s one of my top 3 favorite movies from Robert Downey Jr. You can NEVER make me hate him!

It was a great parody of method actors going too far in their role and taking themselves too seriously. An actor so committed to the role that he’s willing to do blackface without seeing any issue with it even when getting called out by a black person. An actor so invested in his characters that he forgets who he actually is.
Yea when I was playing jack…he even made Ben feel stupid reminiscing a role inside of the character he was portraying in a movie as another character
Yes and the fact that his character who stepped way over the line in Tropic Thunder realistically and appropriately got major called out from his furious black co star in the film they were making that he deserved helped too. The filmmakers said the intention of that confrontation was to openly address and gave voice to that anger and criticism so it left none to be given by anyone else .Then there was also that characters emotional breakdown later that added a depth to and sympathy for the character . The role was a comedic satire on overly serious method actors and not a racist statement which was made clear. This distinction made all the difference of why RDJ got raves and not blowback for that role .
Tropic Thunder was freaking hilarious. Tom Cruise dancing at the end was awesome. Those dance lesson was worth it.
When I watched the commentary years ago (where true to his character's word, RDJ stayed in character for 😂), I think it was the director who had said the dancing was Cruise's idea.
RDJ and Cruise each had two of the best performances of their lives. The kid who was the opium lord also did an equally great job. I think that helps put RDJ, when you have an amazing talent, many of whom put in some of their finest performances it's not a movie being carried by RDJ's blackface performance, that's simply one aspect of it.

RDJ is one of the few actors I would like to meet, just cause his rise, all and then complete ascendance to the top is amazing and overcoming addiction is amazing. I'm 10 years sober this August 14th from opiates so I know how hard it can be, dude deserves what he got. He worked for that and gave us the best Iron Man we could have asked for.
