RDJ did such a good job with the character. The makeup department also did an amazing job. 2 months before the movie came out I was mad because his name was on the poster but I never once saw him on the poster or in the trailer. Then one day I looked at it long enough and my jaw was on the floor. This whole time I was wondering who this random black dude was, so I was not ready for the reveal/lore behind his character. Also he portrayed a black character without needing to rely on stereotypes, while ironically the actual black character was more of a stereotype. Tropic Thunder, great writing, great acting.
The black character was a faker who was exploiting a black stereotype for money. The white character was doing exactly the same thing, and that was the irony between the two guys. It was poking fun at people's conception of what it means to be "black" in America.

Had Tropic Thunder not had a black actor as part of the main cast then I could see some people getting angry over RDJ’s character, even though his character was funny. But they had an actual black actor in the main cast and their interactions together were absolutely hysterical. Brandon Jackson played his character’s outrage at the best black role in the war film being played by a white actor so, so well. It was great. IIRC RDJ was kinda scared and aired the film with the NAACP and they were fine with the character. Tropic Thunder is one of the few actually funny movies of the past twenty years. Edit: people seem to forget that the film was a comedy poking fun at actors, producers, talent agents, method acting, the whole nine yards. And damn it was true to life too.
If you think that's something, you should hear my mother's Bernie Sanders impression. It's terrifying in its accuracy and coming from an old woman on top of it.
I think Tropic Thunder did it smart. The joke wasn't that it was a white guy in black face. The joke was meta and about how Hollywood can be so insane they'd cast a white actor to play a black character instead of just hiring a black actor. Which they also point out in the movie. Intent matters.
Hollywood is sexist racist misogynistic and hypocritical. The Hollywood moguls not the actors only care about profits. Fuck your social causes but if they can make money on your social causes they will fleece you and steel your soul to lead you to believe they care
Robert Downey jr wasn’t evening playing a black guy, he was playing a white man who was doing black face for a role. It’s not like they hired him over a black actor. People seem to forget that
I'm actually black, and RDJ channeled more than one of my uncles literally perfectly, mannerisms, gesticulation, gait, it made me respect him more as an actor, also it was hilarious!
Neither of those words are specifically part of "African American vernacular". Gesticulation refers to gestures; often dramatic or animated ones, while gait refers to how one walks and carries themselves physically.
@@thirdgen377 Validation? Not sure what you mean. Anyone who finds blackface offensive should go see a therapist, if you ask me (unless it's meant as an insult, ofc)
Blackface doesn't make fun of black people (most of the time anyway), it's often more like an homage / tribute, but since the world is full of idiots... I'm an atheist and think that religion is cancer... yet I'd gladly dress as Martin Luther King and do blackface, out of respect and admiration. Now, if your goal in life is to find stuff to be offended about, then you'll probably find a way to consider blackface offensive, regardless of context. Remember when Eddie Murphy did whiteface in SNL? ruclips.net/video/l_LeJfn_qW0/видео.html I'd have to be clinically insane in order to find that video offensive.
He wasn’t doing blackface. That whole character was a satire of intense method actors who go to extreme lengths to play a role, and pokes fun at the fact that Hollywood has cast white actors in minority roles.
@@riotbreaker3506 Not traditional blackface. When I see real blackface i want to rip a white person's head off. RDJ did more of caricature becoming a black person with no ill intent. Very similar to Dave Chapelle doing a white guy. I wouldn't want what he did being confused with true black face but in modern times people put them together. I guess maybe if someone did it his way but with ill intent it would feel just like old school blackface. So in that sense you'd be right.
I believe they mentioned in the commentary track (yes, I listen to them, too) they were essentially making fun of the absurdity of Hollywood and the lengths actors will go for a role. Loved that movie.
I mean yeah. The movie itself has a news segment about how theirs a scandal of a white actor putting on blackface And also the lengths the actor went through to get black skin.
It's weird how people missed that considering his final scene which was the Oscars where RDJ's character was not in blackface, it's clear that he was just playing an Australian actor who's doing a blackface.
My favourite bit was the Vietnamese, because he doesn't then pretend to be Vietnamese, he's pretending to be black, pretending to be Vietnamese. So his "black" characteristics and accent came out in the way he pronounced the words. Fucking hilarious. If he didn't get an award for that, he should have.
Every joke has its comedic timing. The Office is a perfect example of a show. It wouldn't work today if it just came out, but it also wouldn't have worked if it came out ten years before it actually did come out. All great comedy is meant for its current audience, and we really can't be looking backwards or forwards at the repercussions it may have. Some people are ahead of their time, some people are behind, and the most (current) popular ones are thriving in the current times
Foxx's explanation of fighting the easy fight against people who mean no harm is profound. We dodge the real, meaningful fights that are dangerous. It explains so much of the world, especially social media.

Jamie's got it 100% right. Most of us Black people weren't offended by the character. Robert D did a good job in that movie. Now, it's a different question if a film uses a White actor to play a Black character when there are millions of available Black actors. But, that wasn't the case here. The role called for a White actor who gets so deep into his role that he lives the part of his Black character. Downey killed it. And the reactions from the Black actor in the movie, Brandon Jackson, made it even better.
But wait.... How can you say it's not right to have a white actor play a black character, but its ok to have a black actor play a white character? As we've seen lately with these adaptations of old movies and such. There is a severe disconnect with the whole "equality" thing because it's only considered moving towards equality when you're giving one certain race or gender more opportunities and complaining when another race or gender gets those same opportunities. We don't live in the 40s, 50s, 60s or even 70s anymore. The notion that we're still "so behind" is just absolutely ridiculous. Jamie said it best, people are just constantly looking for things to bitch about, they search out things to be "offended" by. But the fact is, if you get offended by something thats YOUR fault, because you allowed it to affect you.

Daniel Simpson you are wrong. Your life isn’t dictated by anyone else. Skin color doesn’t change that fact we’re all human with the same capabilities. A bad break up doesn’t ruin someone’s life, only their feelings. If your poor and do nothing to change your own life, yes you’ll be poor. If you work your ass off you’ll be successful. Nobody is there to make you successful. If you fail out of school that’s your fault. If you don’t have a dad at home that’s your fathers fault. Or lack their of a father. Everyone can change their future. My future wasn’t set by anyone when I was a child or even before I was born. Each person alive can change their own lives. Thinking society is set before your even alive is lunacy and that makes you arrogant. History will not change. If you want a better future you have to work your ass off. You deserve nothing from anyone just because you say so.
Daniel Simpson that makes no sense. I’m not in a wealthy tax bracket by birth. Thats nothing but nonsense. That’s an opinion not a fact. I’m no more likely to get a degree in anything than anyone else. You are not what your parents are. Thinking that me being Caucasian born in America just like someone else not Caucasian born in America. Your work dictates what you makes not your parents. My parents are comfortable. I am not. So explain how my parents successes make them mine. Their careers have nothing to do with me. If you are lazy and think people just owe you things. You deserve to have nothing. I work my ass off for what I have. I was NOT born into it. You must be talking about the minority who’s parents own companies and are wealthy. Just because the color of your skin at birth, you aren’t less likely or more likely to be successful. If someone doesn’t have a father figure in a black community, that’s the black communities fault. Not the white man. Stop blaming others for your lack of success
Jamie Foxx is the shit. He gets it. He’s an artist. It’s his job to be other people than he is in real life. Fuck what the role is. Pick the best actor.

Hilarious indeed and we joke about it a lot since we from time to time binge western shows and movies.
@Mr. Fingers I more mean it philosophically, the way people do when they ask the same thing about method actors. If you have to spend a year(or whatever the extended length of timeis) becoming this person and it's a whole process to go back to the person you used to be, are you even acting as them anymore or did you become the character? At what point does it stop being acting and turn into scripted reality tv? I don't actually have an answer for this, just my opinion.
I was visiting my grandparents and they had a Western on (that was the only thing my grandfather watched anymore) and I was sort of hearing it in the background as we talked and then I looked at it and was shocked. I wanted to know why Geronimo had blue eyes! And my grandfather said that was John Wayne. And I laughed at the ridiculousness of it.

I don't either but it's probably because the movie was pointing fun at blackface and how ridiculously dumb people look when they wear it. At no point were they ever encouraging or complimenting it. Have you ever watched It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia? All the characters are complete assholes and shitty people but because the are so oblivious to it while everyone around them is aware, it's funny. For some reason, it's funny to watch a person who doesn't realize they are being retarded lol don't ask me why though.
Jamie has perfectly summed up how I feel about people who get outraged at everything little thing celebrities do without ever addressing or trying to change the deeper, underlying issues that are going on.
I honestly can't believe people couldn't recognize RDJ from the start. That's just wild to me. XD

Why its not completely wrong its overthinking, a good joke is a good joke and can be as intemporal as a good music or so

@@rockyaldebaran4085From a certain inoculation.

RDJ wasn't doing blackface, he was playing a character who was doing blackface.
He was just a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude
Robert Downey Jr. had me thinking he was really some random black actor in Tropic Thunder. I didn't even know at first. He reminded me of one of those mixed black dudes that talks like a white boy.
How can we get mad at Robert Downey Jr. but love the Wayans brothers in "White Chicks?"
RLMP Productions exactly!
Shaquita96 Jones haha it does cause i thought the same thing as he did lol
Daniel Simpson and a black president removed any factual evidence you had about institutional racism
"recreationally outraged." That term really nails it to describe todays easily offended culture.
Exactly.
I thought it was a brilliant way of describing it! Im gonna use that
Yes. Being offended for attention on social media seems to be the in thing now.
Michael Block HOW DARE YOU
I got s black face emoji 🌚🌚🌚
Jamie Foxx is the shit. He gets it. He’s an artist. It’s his job to be other people than he is in real life. Fuck what the role is. Pick the best actor.
I might draw the line at him playing Hilary Clinton though...
On second thoughts...hmmmmm
@@NoLefTurnUnStoned. that would be funny lol
Jamie Foxx is a racist fuck for real... hes a great actor.
This topic always makes me laugh as I relate to watching old old westerns from like the 50s, 60s, 70s and almost all the time us Natives were portrayed by caucasians. My pops and I just laughed it off at how dumb they viewed/portrayed us and our way of life and some religion practices/beliefs. Hilarious indeed and we joke about it a lot since we from time to time binge western shows and movies.
Have you read the book Hanta Yo? Do you have any opinions on it?
@Mr. Fingers If you can only play the roles that fit the life you lived, are you even an actor anymore?
Same too with East Asians being played by white men in Kong Fu movies.
Robert wasn't playing a black guy, he was playing a dude disguised as a dude playing another dude
Nico _ dude.
actually he was playing a dude playing another dude disguised as another dude
Wait I thought he was playing a dude, playing a dude, disguised as a dude, playing another dude?
i was bout to say, that first dude had it all wrong
he was playing a dude disguised as a dude, in the role of a dude.
His rdj impression was almost perfect
John Robichaud is that an antman profile picture?
I was looking for this comment lol. I had put my phone down while listening to it and I was like “daaaamn that actually sounds just like him!!”
I know this comment is kinda pointless btw so please don’t rip me apart for just saying what was on my mind. (Sad that I even have to say that but some kids are just so inconsiderate and disrespectful as fuck) lol
Akayy ! Nobody cares you idiot, what a *sad* pointless comment
Foxx is an epic impressionist
It was EPIC
I don’t know anybody whose seen the movie that was actually mad at rdj
I don't either but it's probably because the movie was pointing fun at blackface and how ridiculously dumb people look when they wear it. At no point were they ever encouraging or complimenting it. Have you ever watched It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia? All the characters are complete assholes and shitty people but because the are so oblivious to it while everyone around them is aware, it's funny. For some reason, it's funny to watch a person who doesn't realize they are being retarded lol don't ask me why though.
Yeah people are such pussies
Hey it's Tolken and Butters
Libtards and racist blacks cared
Onlyrealmusic4life Tropic Thunder and It’s Always Sunny are some of the funniest things ever filmed. No doubt.
Jamie Foxx is an awesome actor and comedian!! RDJ was flat out awesome in Tropic Thunder that whole movie was funny AF!!
Wasn't RDJ's blackface exactly a criticism of blackface in the first place? At least that's how I interpret it.
Yes, that's the joke. Also making fun of the lengths some actors will go to play a part. The entire thing is satire lol
it was a good few years before this blackface bullshit starting happening🤦♂️
@@RC-nv6rc Sir, I'm gonna give you a chance to correct yourself as blackface has been around since long before any of us were born lol
Totoro excuse me sir, I identify as 3,297 years old!
Comedy, that's the way i interpret it.
This was made before RDJ got a lot of shit on social media for playing that roll. No one was offended until 10 years later
No one was offended by slavery in the 1500s, they weren't offended till 360 years later.
*role
@@blitzofchaosgaming6737 I'm pretty sure the slaves all found it very offensive lol
@@quein2961 Yeah that was my point. Just because people don't say they are offended doesn't mean they aren't offended.
@@blitzofchaosgaming6737 That's true, but I feel like we might have overcorrected now to a point where everything is offensive.
"Recreationally outraged" is a great way to put it.
Thought the same thing! Brilliant phrase.
Hit the nail on the head.
I was talking about this subject last night and did not have a way to properly express it. This is perfect
It’s America’s new national pastime
Didn't Bill Burr coin that phrase? I know he used it at some point.
Jamie has perfectly summed up how I feel about people who get outraged at everything little thing celebrities do without ever addressing or trying to change the deeper, underlying issues that are going on. It’s so easy for people to win social justice warrior points on Twitter calling out an actor for something very shallow and quite meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
RDJ was a dude, playin a dude, playin a dude, disguised as another dude. Who also was a Vietnamese farmer
That was the other dude.
supersheets12 the Vietnamese farmer was the disguised dude
Correction: LEAD FARMER
@@chillo5687 I'm outraged about the unrecognized plight of the Vietnamese lead farmers. Lead is bad for children.
What an original comment.
When Jamie Foxx said he knows sign language, it didn't even surprise me. Foxx is so friggin talented in so many areas.
That shit had me shook. I've watched this interview a handful of times and somehow forgot about that.
This dude can act, sing, perform standup comedy, play piano, speak exceptionally well, and can speak sign language?!
It's like a higher plane of being a human being

Im so glad so many viewers 'got' Robert Downeys role in 'Blackface.' He wasnt so much doing blackface, he was spoofing on those 'Spartan Method Actors' who immerse themselves so deeply in acting. Brilliant, and they had the other guy laughing at him, calling him 'Kangaroo Jack,' etc..
That's a great phrase "recreational outrage".
I’m using this for now on.
JDAnalog I can’t see it going that far personally
Right! I kinda laughed about that as its sadly true.
When he said that I immediately flicked down into the comments to leave mine about this phrase and saw yours. So simple, yet so profound.
Another good phrase is "willful ignorance"
