Seal was born on the outskirts of London to working-class parents of Brazilian and Nigerian descent. They separated when he was very young, and Seal was raised primarily by his father, an interior decorator with a violent temper, and his stepmother. He had a turbulent childhood and left home after dropping out of school at age 15. In his early 20s Seal developed a type of lupus called discoid lupus erythematosus (try saying that fast...), which left him with prominent facial scars that were later erroneously rumoured to be Nigerian tribal markings.

I remember going cliff jumping in high school with my friend and HIS high school buddies. They were guys guys, football players. And we had about a 35 minute drive to said cliffs. So we were listening to the radio, a lot of metal, alternative rock as well. So a commercial came on and the channel shuffling commenced. Nope, skip, naaah etc. then this song came on. The car got quiet, the song finished and we all just sat there and accepted it. A great song where nobody was like “yes” “this song kicks ass” nope. Just silence and ears open. A good moment that proves a good song is a good song and doesn’t need anything else.

Interestingly, Seal never intended for "Kiss From a Rose" to be released. Based on his recollections below, you never know when you have a hit on your hands....
“I wrote it way before I wrote any of my first album. I wrote it about three years before I was even signed, before I had a deal. It is really old. The song started off as an experiment. When I was just starting out, I was living in a squat. I had one of those four-track port-a-studios, basically a tape machine that takes a cassette and splits it up into four tracks.”
He laid the song down but apparently didn’t think much of the results. “I threw the tape in the corner. I was embarrassed by it so I wouldn’t play it for my producer, Trevor Horn. But I played it to a friend. So then, when I was recording my second album, Trevor kept asking me about this ‘rose’ song he’d heard about. My friend had told him about it. I finally played it to him on the second album, because he kept brow beating me into it.”
“To be honest, I was never really that proud of it, though I like what Trevor did with the recording. He turned that tape from my corner into another 8,000,000 record sales and my name became a household name. I realized it just wasn’t a song from a tape in the corner when I was picking up Grammys for it. Of course I love it now and I am just so appreciative of the fact that I have a song like that, that most people love.”

It really is an incredible story and one which I'd heard before. The song is so beautiful, it's weird to imagine Seal wasn't very happy with it originally. I just thank God, the people around him had a very different idea when they heard it! 🙋‍♂

The first songs were "Crazy" and "Killer" by Seal.
In the early 1990s, a civil war raged in Europe in Bosnia-Herzegovina, which was very brutal and bloody.
The UN had sent Peace Corps to that area in an attempt to control the warring parties.
Many soldiers who came back developed PTSD, because of all the atrocities that had happened there.
There was a documentary (on YT) about a soldier who was traumatized by this.
He saw civilians being crushed by tanks, snipers shooting at civilians, blowing them up because of the landmines on the roads.
The genocide in Srebrenica forced many civilians to flee for their lives.
One of the parties fighting in this conflict captured thousands of civilians,
Families were torn apart, they separated the men and boys and killed 6,000 of them.
The soldier often drove his truck on the roads.
Seal's song "Crazy" was often played while he was driving and trying to avoid the landmines.
Nowadays, when he hears this song, he is immediately back in that war.
    Crazy.
Someone who was there at the time.
    @dinomujkic 3 years ago
The biggest hit of 1992 in Sarajevo city under siege.I listened as a teenager in a shelter during the shelling of the city.Everyone would gather from the building and listen with the help of generators.
Seal - Future love paradise (official video) is also good.
Crazy and Killer also on (official video), these are the best videoclips from before he became known in the USA.

A Rose can symbolize a lot of things... something beautiful that blossoms... or something beautiful to honor someone who has passed away... or something to flatter or romance a woman you love... or something beautiful that has thorns below it that will hurt u if you are not careful...
    It's all subjective.

  • @jesamindee6783

I found this explanation of the songs meaning, including a quote from Seal......One of the more mysterious songs ever written, there has been much speculation as to the meaning of "Kiss From A Rose" - many think it has something to do with drugs, while others hear it as an expression of love or a journey to the afterlife. Seal has never explained what the song is about, offering only that there was "some kind of relationship that inspired the lyrics."
Seal bucked convention by not including printed lyrics with the album, something he did because he didn't want to wash away anyone's interpretation. He also says that his songs often mean more than one thing, so attributing a meaning would be too simplistic. In lieu of lyrics, Seal wrote a screed on the subject that went with the album. "I think it's the general vibe of what I'm saying that is important and not the exact literal translation," he wrote. "The song is always larger in the listener's mind because with it they attach imagery which is relative to their own personal experience. So it is your perception of what I'm saying rather than what I actually way that is the key."

Seals career was basically over, and this single for his second album flopped on the charts and barely made it two weeks. But Joel Schumacher, the director of this movie, was a big seal fan and reached out looking for a song for a love scene and Seal sent him Kiss From a Rose. Schumacher didn't end up using it in the film, but for the end credits. And that was it, this became one of the biggest hits of the decade. Pretty wild!

Seal provided lyrics and vocals for British DJ and record producer Adamski's single "Killer", which reached number one in the UK for 4 weeks in 1990. In 1991, Seal re-recorded "Killer" for his debut album, Seal, produced by Trevor Horn. Seal's version reached number eight in the UK.
The song "Crazy", also from his debut album, was Seal's first commercial hit, reaching No. 2 in the UK, while becoming his first top ten single in the US.

Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel (born 19 February 1963) is a British musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He has sold over 20 million records worldwide. These include hit songs "Crazy" and "Killer", the latter of which went to number one in the UK, and his most celebrated song, "Kiss from a Rose", which was released in 1994. The prominent scarring on Seal's face is the result of a type of lupus called discoid lupus erythematosus, which affects the skin and leaves large scars. Seal first began dating German model Heidi Klum in February 2004, shortly after she announced her pregnancy and the end of her relationship with Italian Formula One team manager Flavio Briatore. Seal proposed to Klum on 23 December 2004 in a quinzee he had built on a glacier in Whistler, British Columbia. On 10 May 2005, the couple married on a beach in Mexico near Seal's home on Costa Careyes. Every year during their marriage, Seal and Klum renewed their vows on their anniversary with close friends and family. About these renewals, Seal said in 2010, "Each year, Heidi and I get remarried. It's a great party, but for about an hour, we go off on our own down to a private beach. We sit there with the kids and read vows to each other as the sun sets. It's a very special moment to us." In November 2009, Klum officially adopted Seal's surname and became legally known as Heidi Samuel. Peace out.

Wow all these years I even taught it was grave. Thanks for looking that up. It is a very romantic and Med-eval indeed. It almost has a Shakespeare play sound.

This was my introduction to Seal. Absolutely one of my favourite artists. Would love to see him live.

This is easy in the top 10 of my all time favourite songs. There is so much going on in this song... Apparently one of the more 'complicated' songs out there. The album Seal II is incredible and still listen to it on a regular basis.

One of the cool things about certain lyrics is that it means something different based upon life experiences.

Just listening to this brings back so much nostalgia! (But really listening to it again, I could definitely be convinced that this is about cocaine, or possibly some other drug lol. Still awesome!)

This song is so gorgeous, and has such a unique melody-line, I just love singing along to it!! And yes, you pulled up the correct lyrics. I've always thought this song was about bits and pieces of thoughts and musings about a certain person. But the vagueness of the lyrics allows everyone to make their own interpretations.

As many, including myself, have mentioned, check out both Pentatonix's and Dan Vasc's versions of this song. Pentatonic's beatboxer, Kevin, is also a classically trained cellist - his talent is included in their version. Result... FIRE! Dan, is awesome as usual. His duet with Violet... also, FIRE! 😀

Love Seal!!! My favorites are Crazy, Waiting For You, Love Divine, and Don’t Cry. He’s got some amazing music of his own but has also done several covers/ musical standards over the years.

WHAAAT?? I've thought it was "a GRAVE", too!!! For 30 years (or whatever) I've been singing "grave" instead of "gray". LOL. Thanks for that, dude. And oh, yeah "Fly Like an Eagle" is a Steve Miller track. Maybe Seal covered it?

Hey B.P. I been watching your channel for a little while and I just wanted to say that what you alluded to in regards to listening to music as opposed to just hearing it is one of the things I get from your reactions. I've heard most of the songs you react to but frequently hear them or percieve them differently after your reaction/dive into the tune and that's a great thing.
