    Not to be a crude simpleton, but watch Tom's face while he sings this. He looked dead straight into that camera and with a stern face told the bastards that attacked us that we aren't backing down, we're standing our ground. He basically was looking at Osama Bin Laden and telling him to fuck right off. It was a moment when he grabbed this country by the balls and said buck up, it's time to get serious, and we aren't going anywhere without a fight.Regardless of what happened afterward, in that moment, it was perfect.

    I liked Tom Petty long before this, I own most of this catalogue on vinyl, tape, or cd, but this performance really made me a true fan...as it was pretty much a big ol' 🖕..."bring it."
    I remember watching this live...it was the only thing being broadcast on U.S. airwaves. It was on every single tv station including most cable networks.
    We were unified, and ready to put boot to fuckin' head. 100%. Now, we seem to be at each other's throats for the most minuscule bullshit....
    RIP Tom Petty.

    My ex husband was very abusive. Over 27 years, he pushed me down so far into the ground, holding me there, that I thought I would never have the strength to get back up again. Once he was gone, and I could listen to music again, I started listening to Tom. Over the following months, I grew stronger. Yes, I wept, but that was cathartic. When my ex. starts to make me feel bad again, and I feel my strength weakening, I put on this song and sing along to it, at the top of my lungs! (Apologies to my neighbours!). It always gets me through, and gives me that little pep talk! :) I thank Tom from the bottom of my heart :) xx

      You keep on fighting the good fight, Sue! We are the survivors! Last year, I finally saw my escape from 43 years of abuse (not to mention the 21 years I had of it before that), and have barely looked back since. I am so glad I made that move, and I too, sincerely, have Tom to thank for that as well. (And believe it or not, Tom's father Earl helped me some years ago. Earl helped me, but not his own son. Weird). :-)

    • @suereaney7097
      @suereaney7097 7 лет назад +6

      +Layla Sims - Thank-you, Layla. :) I'm so sorry to hear that you too have been abused. I thought 27 years was bad enough. I'm glad that you're in a better place now. :) I think Earl saw Tom's rebellion of what he wanted him to be as a challenge to his authority. If we try to clip our children's wings, one of two things may happen. They never fly, or they fly so high, to get away from us, that we may just lose sight of them. Tom has soared high. Wishing you much, much happiness, Sue :).

    Born in Paris France, moved to Houston Texas at age 10, became naturalized American at 18. Now 48 and successful. Very simple: humbly respect and always willing to work hard. But above all, proudly STAND and hold back tears when confronted to pledge allegiance or recite America's national Anthem. Patriotic shouldn't even begin to describe our passion in all of us as Americans.
    And now on that note, I will never BACK DOWN on calling out ignorant ungrateful arrogance in need of 'reality check' trips to Zimbabwe Africa that still enslave or touristic hot spots in India littered by crippled children careered to beg (crippled at birth by parents for income)...spare us the song & pony dance anti American terrorist rhetoric and b.s.
    Tom Petty stares to the camera right at us as more of a true American than many wished they were (in this "America" A Tribute to Heroes). Never BACK DOWN for whats right, every time. Rest in peace with God my friend.

    Still sad about Tom Petty not being with us any longer. I'm german and as a lifelong ELO & Jeff Lynne fan I got to know Tom's music through his collaboration with Jeff Lynne on Full Moon Fever and in the Traveling Wilburys, of course. Love much of his songs and bought six albums over the years. I always dreamt of another album that Tom and Jeff would do together as Petty & Lynne, sharing the songwriting credits between them both. Unfortunately that will not happen anymore. RIP Tom Petty

    I have the bad habit of expecting a live perfomance song to sound just like the studio version....but still a great performance by great Tom Petty...RIP king

    The concert was the first time I heard this song...and was so impressed with the lyrics and the tone...Hope it hit the right notes with the survivors and relatives of the lost.
