You forgot another line - “Sometimes you’re happy Sometimes you cry half of me is ocean, half of me is sky” I’ve always took that to mean just as the elements have an affect over time, ocean water and powerful rays of the sun will eventually wear out that barricade. That and her big heart - basically they will both bring down each other’s barriers 😊
Honestly...what can ANYONE find not to like about this incredible piece of artistry? The songwriting, the musicianship...all incredible. Tom Petty really was one of the truly great artists of our time, and we were lucky to have him with us in our time. This is music that will stand the test of time.
I wouldn't say he had a beautiful voice. He had a very unique voice and you knew when you heard it, that it was him! He certainly used it to bring his songs to life.
What Petty does is to make the extraordinary appear simple and the simple extraordinary. "Heart so big it could crush this town." "Smoked cigarettes and stared at the moon." "Long day livin' in Reseda." "Most things I worry about never happen anyway." All seems so off the cuff and easy .. but try doing it yourself.
ocan1033 very well put, indeed. At one time I had mistaken Tom Petty’s brilliance for ordinary, but it is in no way ordinary, it is genius, and absolutely extraordinary
You just made me cry with your beautiful description. Tom was truly a Heartbreaker. Right to the end..... Such a beautiful soul under those soulful eyes.
i'm so amazed. his audience consist of adults his age and even decades later younger kids are still listening to him. i have SO much respect and appreciation for this man and the music he has made throughout his years.
I am truly still grieving. A comment came to mind that I saw somewhere a couple of weeks ago ...it said: "Tom, you Heartbreaker, you went and broke our hearts." ♡♡ A huge loss for all fans who loved him. So thankful for the legacy of music Tom left us. You will never be forgotten Tom! ♡
Caroline Baxter Right on. I tear up every time I watch his videos. Dana needs our prayers, folks. It's been over a year now & she's missing him very much! 😢💜
Unbelievable lyrics on this, and all of Tom’s tunes. RIP to an absolute legend. So missed. Wish I could’ve seen him in concert, but I know I can always find solace in this crazy life by listening to his stuff. And that keyboard solo..magical
@@thetompettyproject I know you know this but it was of the Storytellers series on I think VHS? Tom was one of ''those'' people who ''just have IT''.....their soul just seems to be connected to a completely different energy source. I'm not with it enough to figure out what IT is, but I sure do appreciate it when I see/hear IT!!! LOL thank you, Tom. You made millions of peoples' lives so much better.
AgentUndertaker absolutely AGREE. Damn is right. I used to love Howie’s high harmonies with Tom sooooo much (and still do). But wow, Scott does a freakin’ amazing job.....especially here on this song. Sounds just 👌!!! And Benmont’s keyboards👌. And Mike Campbell playing that...instrument he plays (not sure what it’s officially called?) - it sounds absolutely fantastic. Put it all together with Tom’s unique voice/style and you’ve got true, utter perfection right here. 100%.
That's the way it should be, as much as fans like to sing along to heighten their personal experience I wish they would just zip it. I wanna hear who I paid money to hear, not a crowd of people.
I have most of Tom’s music in my iTunes rotation. On the morning of 10/2/17, I listened to this beautiful song, one of my favs, as I drove into work thinking what would I do without Tom’s music to get me through the traffic jams of life. Sadly it was later that afternoon I was sitting in my office doing some legal research when a news brief popped up that Tom was on life support. I had a dreadful feeling we’d lost him and within minutes the news was confirmed. Friends started texting me. My boss who knew I was a huge fan came down to my office to see if I’d heard. I ended up meeting a couple of friends down at our watering hole to commiserate and it was all anyone could talk about but made it so much easier to know I wasn’t the only one hurting. In fact his death inspired me to play guitar and “Walls” was the first song I learned. I truly hope Tom knew what he meant to his fans.
History will tell that it was Mr Tom Petty who wrote the Great American Songbook and folk will say Bob who? Because Tom Petty is and was the real deal.
How professional is Mike Campbell? Mike is usually the co-pilot but he eyes up Benmont Tench on his killer keyboard part to make sure Benmont is the focus...which he certainly is...KILLER! Kudos to Mike Campbell.
One of the regrets of my life, not seeing Tom & The Heartbreakers when they were in Hartford June 14, 2017, less than three months before we all lost him. His best songs were not necessarily his most popular ones, not a bad one in the bunch. Such a talent & treasure!!
That is amazing,I thought I was a late TomPetty fan, 35 now, got into Petty in th late 90s, You guys, 20 years later like him, Petty has been playing for 30 years, and he i still picking up fans. One of the best, Tom
You're right, the lyrics do have a deep, personal meaning. Even more this morning as the news of Tom's passing on is slowly sinking in. I grew up in Florida, went to school at UF in Gainesville. Tom Petty's music was just always there, like a favorite shirt, always comfortable, always in fashion. God bless Tom Petty, may he rest in eternal peace.
Rob McLean I love this song soooooo much. It’s one of my TOP 5 favorite TP songs (I think I have about 35 “top 5” songs of Tom’s😉). Those lyrics are just perfect and beautiful and pure Tom. And no one else can sing them the way he does either. What really also got me about this particular song is the fact that he was asked to write/contribute just ONE song for this movie.....and he watched the movie and liked it so much that he went on to write the entire soundtrack for that movie. Who the heck does that?? Who else has the creativity and talent to do that? Only Tom Petty. I didn’t grow up in FL, but I did grow up with Tom’s music. I remember hearing “Listen to her Heart” back in 1978 or so? I was a high school senior. Still one of my most favorite TP songs. During his lifetime, I hate to admit, I wasn’t one of those absolute super fans. I knew and loved his music though and just always thought he’d be around. Human nature, I guess. Maybe that’s why his passing has gutted me. He WAS always there.....and now he’s not. But his awesome music does live on, and what an amazing legacy it is!
I'm doing my "Petty" rounds today - keeping my heart alive - - I LOVE what you said Rob -- "his music was always there, like a favorite shirt, always comfortable, always in fashion" I join you in saying: 'God Bless Tom Petty, may he rest in eternal peace".

I was in Philly too last Saturday and their performance was AMAZING!! you can truly fell Tom's energy and love for his craft....a gifted musician and songwriter....best concert ever...and I came all the way from Italy to see him
This song is particularly poignant to my wife and I at this point in our lives. Tom and the band played it at the Sept. 21st concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I cried at the show and I've shed a lot more tears since Monday. I am completely gutted. Sometimes the world sucks and a lot of times listening to Tom and the band would make it a little more bearable. RIP Tom...you are greatly missed!
How Mike Campbell's talent goes under the radar of a genius musician ,is a total mystery to me .......i.saw the band live a couple of years back.absolutely star studded talent throughout.i I have no doubt his music will be as fresh in 20 years, when one considers what some of today's music measures up too.
I had the pleasure of seeing him in Little Rock, AR. His only time there. I thank God I got to see him in concert. Also my kids got to see him. We miss you...
I started falling in love with Tom Petty at 14 as well. Now I am 30 and his music still touches me deeply. I always said, heseems to write songs for me, always has a perfect song for whatever I'm going through. I also love his fire, humbleness, and humanness. His band is full of superior talent. Rock On Tom!
Scott is so great, his backing vocals are perfectly in sync with Tom and you can tell that his job is to contribute to the song and not to stand out from it.
Tom Petty has been part of the soundtrack for every wonderful and terrible thing that's happened over the course of my life. I can't believe he's gone. This day can fuck off forever. Rest In Peace darlin'. 💔
It has been 6 months since his passing and I have been listening to songs on his earlier releases, and, as it is with all his songwriting, his gift, was immense. Such a beautiful human being. So glad I got to see TP& THB at the Sept. 22, 2017 at the H. Bowl. Hugs to Dana, Adria, AnnaKim, Mike, Ben, Steve, Ron & Scott. Myself as well as the entire Tom Petty Nation are with you in spirit.
I woke up singing this song today. This could have been written for me. I spend my life building my walls high and thick. Every time I let someone in, I just build my walls higher so I can't get hurt again. Keep out the world, keep in the pain. Pretty sure Tom wtote this about me. In fact, I think all the songs he wrote are about me.... How did he know me so well? Surely no one else hides behind their barricades, that's just me, right? I wasn't allowed to listen to Rock growing up, or go to school dances or have friends outside my parents church. I was born in '72, and I was about 3 or 4 when my dad's mother, who I never got to meet (no matter how fucked up your family is, trust me, 99 times out of 100 I'll win that game) she sent me a transistor radio, just a little hand held kind that took a 9 volt battery and had a long-ass antenna. I used to listen at night with the volume low. I got to hear Elvis and the Beatles, CCR, Steve Miller. A friend made me a mix tape of some Police songs when I was about 12, which I loved, but I didn't get to hear Tom till I was a teenager. Full Moon Fever-- I think I had to replace that tape at least twice while I was in college. I love Tom, and when I'm really low, or really anxious, I turn to Tom. The last couple years, Tom and Jack White (in all his many incarnations) have been in heavy rotation. Tom just soothes my soul, which is why I wore out 2 cassette tapes of Full Moon Fever in college. I think I'll have that last verse of Walls on my tombstone. It just sums me up so well, and imagine having Tom Petty's words immortalized on your resting place? What could be more soothing than that? Whenever my time comes, I plan to round up all my dogs, my grandfather, and we'll join the ultimate Tom Petty concert, wherever it is.
One of my all time favorites. Even if it was for a movie soundtrack..Seeing him live -just basics like this is even better. I don't need a light show and deafness after the show. So many artists working there on the stage. Excellent group. Thanks Tom!
Tom was one of a very few who sounded better live
“All around your island/theres a barricade/that keeps out the danger/holds in the pain”...INCREDIBLE lyrics. Tom Petty was a national treasure.
Indeed
The man was a poet.
They dont make em like they used too ...
Yeh, this whole lyric is just astounding. "You've got a heart so big, it could crush this town". No one writes like this.
You forgot another line -
“Sometimes you’re happy
Sometimes you cry half of me is ocean, half of me is sky”
I’ve always took that to mean just as the elements have an affect over time, ocean water and powerful rays of the sun will eventually wear out that barricade.
That and her big heart - basically they will both bring down each other’s barriers 😊
The man could say more in one line than most songwriters can say in a whole song...Miss you Tom.
You mean lines like, "I'm just a loser at the top of my game."? One of my favorites, which, unfortunately I can relate to all too much at times.
❤️❤️❤️

Great version with the mandolin's solo and the piano's solo. It makes so big it could crush this town...
Such a beautiful voice... Tom is so sadly missed.
I wouldn't say he had a beautiful voice. He had a very unique voice and you knew when you heard it, that it was him! He certainly used it to bring his songs to life.
Very few musicians can sound the same live or in studio. That is true organic talent.
A legend forever. Rip in paradise.
Tom, remember Kelly my beautiful daughter. She just died. I will raise her daughter. Please meet her.. She loved you. Kelly Busse was the best.

Thanks Tom!
