Hey DIY Fam. In this tutorial, I show how to make the waistband and front zip fly for women's trouser. It's my first time making the zipper fly so I'm excited to find out your feedback from this video. I make the patterns un the first half if the video and test it out in the second half of the tutorial. Hope you enjoy and try it out in your own time.
Great job with the fly and the fly extension (so much easier than separate fly pieces), as well as the contoured waistband. I think enlarging and extending the darts changes the shape of the pants though. The upper part of the dart is contained in the new contoured waistband so the darts do not need to be extended, just need to finish what is left of them. Otherwise great job. I liked the top stitching the outside of the waistband also. Thanks for this.
I really appreciate that you don't just do the paper pattern, but you also show how to construct it in calico. It's a big step in the learning and I am very thankful. x
I really like your drafting-to-finish-garment tutorials. They are very clear, concise and easy to follow, as well as understand. Your expertise, diligence, professionalism and genuine presence are greatly appreciated. Please, keep the vids. coming.
Wow! Thank you Charlene for this comment. I am so glad you appreciate the immerse effort that goes into full garment creation. Not everyone is aware of this. So that you so much
Diane Deziel is one of my favorite people who post drafting & sewing tutorials ~ she’s great! I’m glad you shared her name with others, because she offers so much to share about sewing/drafting.
Hi Kim, this is one of my most favorite tutorial to watch. You are explaining clearly and very understandable. Thank you so much for your patience in teaching. God bless!
my first time making a waistband very easy to follow. now I can apply what i have learned to my pattern pieces and finish my project. thanks for posting.
It takes humility to acknowledge the work of someone who is also in same business with you. I am attracted to your channel by your humility. Nice work, nice job. Keep it up.
Very informative 😊 Thank you Kim. Been having a hard time learning how to sew zipper fly, until this video. Now I was able to sew my first zipper fly without any problem. Bless you!!!!
You're really making me very confident,in my sewing skills.Thank you for carrying us along.God bless you loads.Diane is really one of the best,but...i lovee you even more.....😍😘😊😁😍
I did what most wouldn’t when just beginning to sew: I made my own pants! From your drafting tutorial… and let me say WOW I’ve never had anything that fits so well, so thank you for starting off my new addiction with a well done project
Thank you! It looks clear even for a beginner as me. I plan to use this tutorial to make a fly for snaps, not for a zipper. I think it should be a bit bigger for this.
Im radically changed, actually too much fears of this tricks and now am so excited to get started as a young designer😘😘😘 Kim ur tutos are miracle!!!!😍😍😍😍😍
So useful, clear and simple to understand. Amazing how your technics are easier than the ones I learn from other videos. God bless you for passing on the knowledge. I think it looks fantastic!!!
This is such a good tutorial!! I impulsively promised my friend to make her pants, and then I realized I can't make a fly 😅. This really helped me though. Sending love from the philippines ❤
This was the first video of yours that I have seen, Kim Dave. And I LOVE the step by step directions as well as the background music :-) AWESOME job!! Thanks so much!
The proper way to join the seams when making trousers is to sew the inside leg seams FIRST and THEN the crotch seam. The trousers will fit much better without binding in the crotch area and fit the natural curve of the crotch. Try it and I think you will find that the trousers are more comfortable to wear.
I watched 3 of your tutorials in a row, took notes like I was a first bencher in a college lecture, and just finished making the front panel pattern of my pants with the waistband and fly extension (adding pockets later). I'm so proud, but my pattern looks weirdly big lol XDDDD I hope the pants aren't humongous. XD I'm going for a loose fit but still XDDD ahahhaha
New subscriber here !😄So happy I was directed to your channel, so much useful information. I'm binge watching😁. This year I'm working on my blocks and find all your videos so far super useful and brilliant!
Thank you so much!! Just finished mine, they came out really good for a first try at making pants. Mine has a little bit too much fabric in the front part near the zipper, but apart from that they're pretty good! Thanks for the video!
That's fantastic, great thing you gave it a shot. Now that you know what part needs adjustment, you can easily go back to make the corrections in your patterns.
Good job Priscillia! I think if u had extended the waist band upwards after tracing the waistline rather than dropping it down to trace from the bottom of the waist, you would have gotten a perfect fit and not take on the waist agin by an inch.
tried the trouser pattern, not yet for the waist and i like it already.. i had the same issue with d extra room at d back.. a few seams will finish that.. amazing tutorial👌🏼
The extra bulk is a result of not recalculating the waist measurement once you cut for the waist band. Remember when you cut below the waist there is an increase because you are going down to the hip. You have to adjust for the waist to curve back in.
Hi. I really love your work and I've done some of them for my self with a perfect fitting thaks to you. I was wondering if you have a video on how to make a men shirt. Thanks
Nice job!! You should definetly do a video where you make a pair of trousers with the final pattern you created ( flier waistband pockets etc)!! I would looove to watch it :) :)
Great vid. Little question on the front waistband. How come one side ends up inline with the fly but the other side is extended beyond the fly? It’s great as that’s where your button will go but I’d expect them to either be both inline with fly or both extended beyond fly?
Wow, certainly worked out well. I like the simple explanation about how to add the fly. Thanks very much. Is there any chance you could show how to cut out pyjama style trousers too please. You are inspiring - keep up the great work.
Kim Dave kinda messed up though. My waist band is smaller and the behind bit is small... the front is squashed in my crotch... hahahaha oh well. I will start over till I get it. At least now I understand what's going on
Hi, there, thanks so much for this wonderful video - the vids on your channel are super useful. Just one question, though: When measuring for the seam allowance, how come you measure the seam allowance *within* the outline of the waistband and not outside of it (in the general manner that seam allowance are accounted for and included in the pattern cut-out). I am referring to Timestamps 3:40 through to 3:58. I would be super grateful if you could clarify this for me. Thanks a ton! ❤
The above being said, you did in fact mark (only) the lower seam allowance line *below* the lower margin of/*outside of* the waistband. For the rest of the seam allowances, you marked the seam allowance lines *within* the pattern. Refer Timestamps 3:52 through to 3:59 I forgot to add this to my original comment. Thanks much! Thanks 🙏

Kim Dave Hy. My name is Precious. I wanted to ask if you could please mentor me in sewing?
Kim, once you cut for the waist band you have to go back and adjust for the waist dimensions to reduce bulk. That should eliminate the excess,
Thank you for this. I have never seen a zipper and this is probably the best explanation I've seen.
Great job with the fly and the fly extension (so much easier than separate fly pieces), as well as the contoured waistband. Thank you for this info . Because I couldn't understand why I'd have to change my dart length

I love this tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to do it so thoroughly and with such high quality!
You are so welcome!
Thank you!! I have tried so many times to add a waistband. I wasn’t dropping the darts. It made all the difference!!

Can u please define flapper pattern with medium size measurements
I am definitely gonna be trying this out. Been searching for an easily understandable tutorial on this for a while now. Thank you. :)

Very well done. I am learning to create my own patterns.

Just subscribed, your videos are SO informative! I’m going to cut these off at mid thigh and make a pair of cute tailored shorts! Thanks lady ☺️☺️
Thanks! I learned something.
Thank you so much 😃

Hi. I really love your work and I've done some of them for my self with a perfect fitting thaks to you. I was wondering if you have a video on how to make a men shirt. Thanks
Kim this is brilliant . Thank you
Perfect!! Do you think finishing the edges with bias tape would work? xx
Very useful lesson. Can you do more trouser pattern.. thak you very much
Nice job!! You should definetly do a video where you make a pair of trousers with the final pattern you created ( flier waistband pockets etc)!! I would looove to watch it :) :)
Oh yes I plan to 😉 Don’t worry 👌
Clearly explained 👏
Great tutorial! I like Diane Deziel too.
Thank you 😀 Diane is amazing 🙌 so talented!
Great vid. Little question on the front waistband. How come one side ends up inline with the fly but the other side is extended beyond the fly? It’s great as that’s where your button will go but I’d expect them to either be both inline with fly or both extended beyond fly?
I did it yippee....great fit too
I love you so much for this tutorial, thanks a bunch!
You welcome babe ☺️
Thanks for this very clear demo on the curved waistband. I was curious , how did you correct the fit? I’m pretty sure I’ll have the same problem.
Wow, certainly worked out well. I like the simple explanation about how to add the fly. Thanks very much. Is there any chance you could show how to cut out pyjama style trousers too please. You are inspiring - keep up the great work.
I will keep your request in mind for the future ☺️
this is awesome... thanks. my first pair of trousers... heheeeh
hahahaha i know right 😊
Kim Dave kinda messed up though. My waist band is smaller and the behind bit is small... the front is squashed in my crotch... hahahaha oh well. I will start over till I get it. At least now I understand what's going on
thanks a lot for the first time I fixed the fly and it blew me off my feet.
I love your channel
Bless you! This must have taken forever!
Thank you so much. I am inspired to take a chance with a zip fly. I have been postponing it.
Hope you give it a try 🙂
Let me know how it goes.
Came out really well. Would hooks be an easier way to go. With a button you would need a button whole?
Thank you so much 😃. Amazing tutorial!
Thank you very much for all your video

Why do I redraw the dart the same size? Wouldnt that make the pants fit differently?
I love it. Great and clear !
