      Yeah the thing is I dont think most of the people at the table are typical. Like Jirard is dedicated to games and loves all types of games while everyone else there do not seem like huge gamers. ProJarad probably would have fit much better because he seems to have more experience in PS1 games. Plus Jirard makes an excellent point that the 30-40 hours can be spread out and still be beaten in a reasonable amount of days.

      Most JRPGs are better than FFVII.
      People just can't accept it has aged and it's worse today than other entries in the series who still are charming in today's day and age.
      In that regard, FFIV, VI and IX are far better cuz they aged better. Hell, Crisis Core is better than FFVIII. People just get blinded by nostalgia and feelings

      Also, I can hate whatever I want. FFVII fans overshadow all other good entries in the series and other good and even better RPGs like Dragon Quest.
      Speaking of which, Dragon Quest VIII makes FFVII look like horsecrap and it's already been ported to another system, along with all other DQ entries where to DS and 3DS. So yeah. FFVII is nowhere as good as other games were and other games are.
      Oh, and don't count on the remake cuz it hasn't been announced anything at all about it in the slightest. It'd still be remaking the worse sequel to Crisis Core anyway (>w0)

    • @StriderZessei
      @StriderZessei 5 лет назад +3

      @@kutami2951 I agree the graphics haven't aged as well, but if that's all that mattered, FFXV would be the best entry. That's just the virtue of newer games looking better than older ones.
      I love both games, but I like VII better because the story, themes, setting and characters all resonated more to me.
      I love VII, but it's not my favorite, and that doesn't mean I can't appreciate other games' strengths and contributions. Hipsters just like to hate on VII because of all the recognition it got. Happens to every flagship title for every console: OOT, Halo, etc.

    • @kutami2951
      @kutami2951 5 лет назад +1

      @@StriderZessei thank you for not threaten to murder my entire family like most FFVII nostalfags would've.
      I'm not saying that the graphics are the only thing. I just didn't like it as much, and yes, I played it through. I liked the prequel better cuz, in my opinion, Zak is a better character and his story is much, much more interesting. Same with the other games. I have something in all of them that makes me like them better than FFVII. I like to think of this in a similar way I don't like Ocarina of Time as much as other adventure games and other entries in the series.
      Not saying the game is shit, it's good. But not as good as people put in on a pedestal for, undermining other RPGs who were just as good or better. The hate is for the popularity of the game and how people's opinion of it makes it outshine other RPGs that are better, thus making them less popular and played.
      Also, I'm done with Cloud being in everything FF related in some way or another.
      But yeah, not gonna undermine your opinion onnit as well. You can think what you want.. But it's healthy to keep in mind other RPGs series and other games open and judge things differently. For example, I said earlier that DQ VIII is much better for me than FFVII, but I find the story of it to not be as good as FFVII. I just love the atmosphere, gameplay and the fact that it also looks better than it.

    Playable party members die in Final Fantasy II, III, IV, V, and can die if certain actions are taken in VI. Aeris’ death as the first in the series is the most widespread piece of misinformation in the series.

    • @everdale8920
      @everdale8920 5 лет назад +7

      I think Aerith's death is the most impactful because of some major differences.
      1. The playable cast of FF7 is less than that of FF6 and FF4.
      2. Aerith was an integral part of the story. Almost everything in the story thus far revolved around her being a Cetra.
      3. It was an unexpected end of a rescue-mission. As opposed to the more common "I'll sacrifice myself to save you, you go ahead"-trope featured in many of the other deaths. And she was straigh-up murdered!
      4. She never returned (as one character in the original FF4 and multiple in FF4 remakes) and her stats didn't pass on to any new recruits (as with Galuf->Krile in FF5)
      This is my take on it, but you are very correct that killing off a playable character was nothing new to the story.

    • @coolguyman16
      @coolguyman16 5 лет назад +1

      @@everdale8920 I disagree that Aerith was integral in a way. Sure she was important in that she just so happened to be a Cetra, but story-wise the game really forces her down your throat with the dating mechanics and makes her so happy-go-lucky in order to try and make her death more impactful.
      In that way, I feel her death feels like a cheap shot and less impactful than what its hyped up to be. I also think her importance as a party member is overrated. Sure she has healing Limit Breaks, but you can just use Cure/Cure-All Materia for roughly the same effect without needing to fill her Limit Break. And sure, she does get better Limit Breaks later on, but it's completely optional to use her.

    • @everdale8920
      @everdale8920 5 лет назад

      @coolguyman16 Sure, she's no Ned Stark. And everyone have their own preferences on what good storytelling is. But the first times you meet her, you're split up from your party (this makes it a more personal encounter). Then you save her, get to see her home, meet her adoptive mom etc. You as a player get to know Aerith in the same way Cloud does. The relationship with Tifa is different, because Cloud knows her since they were kids and this information gets filled in piece by piece (very different, neither is strictly better).
      Even in my first playtrough, when I had the chance of swapping Aerith out of the party, I did. This was possibly a design choice from Square. I did this becuase she didn't feel as the best character to have in my party, and this might contribute to me not missing her "too much" in disc 2 and 3. In hindsight, perhaps Square should have made her more attractive to keep in your party. In my first playthrough I was just a kid, so I thought Tifa and Barret were a couple. So to me Aerith was the only "girlfriend-candidate", which made me care more for her.
      I also feel that Square could have made her more relevant in other ways. Instead of Bugenhagen, she could have told the party about the lifestream. When she is dead, it would have been cool if she spoke to Cloud through the lifestream, but it could be left unsaid if it was his mako poison or actually her speaking.

    • @ezunino1711
      @ezunino1711 5 лет назад

      nahh it was emotional due to the cinematic and the music, i find FFIV deaths more sad because Tellah dies saving you, the same with the twins although they get to live at the end of the game, or let's not forget about Galuf from FFV fighting alone against Exdeath until he collapses for your team to survive, but they are not as memorable just because the presentation and music, and no the playable cast of ff4 is only 2 less than the one from 7 so that's not a huge difference

    • @everdale8920
      @everdale8920 5 лет назад +1

      @@ezunino1711 Even though agree that the music was superbly emotional, I will respectfully argue why the deaths of Galuf, Tellah etc would objectively be less emotional (I mean we are talking about opinions here, so nobody is wrong).
      The troupe of a partymember sacrificing themself for the group would probably be less shocking and more often instill different feelings ("Damn, I didn't unequip them", or positive emotions that the character was brave to enough to willfully die). To most players, Aeriths death was probably seen as an unexpected murder. Of course the cinematics helped, but as I said before: it was the end of a rescue mission and you just found her. Sephiroth/Jenova ripped her away out of your hands.
      To me Palom/Porom and Galuf are quite emotional as well. But in my eyes FF7 was the first game to really make me feel the party members were distinctly different from each other. Previous characters had backgrounds, but (at least to me) it didn't feel like they had much agency once they became partymembers. In FF7 they totally do, Barret gets angry as a way to cope with emotions and Cait Sith has "his" own agenda (to name a few).
      Tellah and Galuf were both old, it felt like they sacrificed themselves to save the lives of those who had more to live for. When Aerith died I felt like it wasn't necessary, she didn't need to die. So why did it happen? I wanted it undone, just as most people losing a relative feel (especially if there's an accident or the like).

      I disagree heavily. Parappa is in a position where it is just clearly not as good as most of the list and is only really on the list because the character is iconic, however Ape Escape is actually a really good game that works really well. Having played both, and despite being a huge fan of jrpgs/rpgs over most any other genre (especially platformers,) I actually find that Ape Escape is at least equal to ff9. Now it's fine if you want to disagree and say that ff9 is actually better, people are allowed to have different opinions, but to essentially say that it should no argument that ff9 is better is what is absurd.

    This is going to be interesting because Jirard has realized that FFVII may not win as easily as he initially thought. Jirard is now worried that in the wake of Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, and dare I say even Ape Escape that FFVII might get crushed. I feel sorry for him but I also think this is a taste of his own medicine. After all, one of his main reasons against Ocarina back in the N64 bracket was how it was 'overhyped' and VII is often considered the Ocarina of the PS1 - for better or worse.
    Though the last round was a trainwreck, I can't seem to turn away from this show. Time will tell. After all, Symphony has lost and Jirard did not see that coming.

Those games were a far better experience for me, especially the enjoyment of tagging out with friends while playing them. FF7 was only amazing because it was the longest video game every made and had cut scenes. And before you say anything about it being good to hate on it, I was there when it came out, and I played it at a friend's house before getting it myself. I appreciated the thoughtful and reasoned out discussions in the last two seasons of madness where the judges actually made an effort to balance their subjective opinions, humor, and even occasional trolling with an attempt to look at things as objectively as possible for something like this. I would have probably thought it ridiculous for FF IX to lose that match regardless due to my opinions of the two games, but the way that match up was treated was so far outside of what this series had led me to expect that I honestly took zero enjoyment from it.
      If there had been anything approaching a balanced and reasonable discussion of FF IX I wouldn't have horribly minded despite disagreeing with the outcome. It's a bunch of different peoples' opinions and expecting all of them to perfectly line up with me is naive. Ape Escape controlled just fine. It was unorthodox for sure, and noone picked it up and immediately 'got' it. But given how the gadgets controlled, the layout mapping was perfectly suited...
      And the whole 'R1 to jump' thing? R1 is fine for jump. I always make R1 for brake in racers, and it's sort of similar when jumping.
      Ape Escape is my favourite 3D platformer ever; FFIX is my favourite FF in the series and probably my favourite turn based RPG ever... I would seriously struggle to choose between the two!

    No matter how much someone will argue otherwise, I cannot bring myself to like FFVII. It's my least favorite in the FF series, and I have a multitude of reasons for that. First off, it does NOT feel like a fantasy game. I get that some of VI, among many of the other modern FF games are much less fantasy regardless (XV is my 2nd least favorite due to not even being a JRPG anymore, but almost ties with VII for me). The futuristic style just contradicts with the series idealogy in a sense, and I much prefer playing IV and VI (Why the hell wasn't FFVI just called FFIV in the west, did they give up on hiding the actual entry numbers?). My biggest issue with FFVII is that it introduced way too many of those minigame bits. If they were optional, that would be a lot better, but no, pretty much every single one is required. Squatting was a weird one, but the CPR minigame had me on end, my gods. I spent probably 20-40 solid minutes trying to do it all because the game was not being cooperative. I was probably doing somehing wrong, but I also did not expect to be performing CPR after riding on dolphins (which also is very weird). I will admit, the game has outstanding music, especially the battle music, and pretty visuals for the most part (where it falls is the overworld character models and the weird 15FPS battle lock, I'm a bit confused on that). However, if I were to nitpick about anything the most, anything at all, it would be Cloud. To keep it short, he is pure fan service. He is seen and referenced in nearly every FF game after the PS1 FF era somehow (especially in spin-offs and the XIII series, which I actually like XIII, don't know how though), and the Smash appearance a while back was an unjustified entry. Not only that, the Advent Children movie version of Cloud. That movie in GENERAL was all over the place. The plot about a virus from Sephiroth, Cloud being even EDGIER, it just boggles me. I get that all I'm doing is trashing on FFVII, and that I'm just an internet rando, but I needed to voice this. I hear so much praise for FFVII, and my bias toward IV and VI really do not help here, I just want to hear more criticism toward FFVII. I enjoyed the actual JRPG gameplay when it happened, and even the character development in some areas. I also prefer IX over VII due to it's return to actual fantasy roots. If anyone wants to argue a point or two on why FFVII is good despite what I have mentioned, go ahead. If you read this far, then I'm shocked.

    Parappa is going to get steamrolled. This is a joke. FF7 should have gone against FF9 and Parappa against Ape Escape. The fact that they looked at this bracket and thought “yeah, that’s a fair matchup” is simultaneously depressing and the funniest shit this channel has ever done.

  • @tylerowens
    @tylerowens 5 лет назад +3

    Aerith's death was far from a first for Final Fantasy. Party member death goes all the way back to FF II (rip Minwu. You died for a glitched spell that was supposed to be the best but was outclassed by basic fire magic). Tellah's death and Palom and Porom's petrification in IV were super sad moments (though technically P&P do get healed at the end so they don't quite count). Galuf dies in V. Shadow can die in VI if you're not careful on the floating continent. Honestly, given how some of these previous moments were actual sacrifices rather than "bad guy drops out of nowhere to kill her" they're much more affecting than Aerith's death imo.
    But I don't know what I was expecting from the group that shat all over IX without even having played it.

      What's crazy is that VI is, if I recall correctly, Jirard's favorite Final Fantasy. It's understandable that the others would have such misconception (Caddy openly admits he's not into JRPGs, and I'm beginning to suspect Barry doesn't even play videogames at all), but him? Kinda awkward.

      @@Baalshazar I've said it before, but the problem isn't that they are biased. It isn't even that they won't acknowledge their bias b/c they are, upfront. The issue is that they keep going with it at times to the point in which, and they might not realize it during shooting, it is just anti-whatever they are biased against. At that point, they don't give the opposing game a chance, and therefore, the whole episode becomes a mess. That was the Ape Escape v. FFIX episode in a nutshell.
      Here, they, again revealed their bias to the audience, but the difference in what they do despite said bias shows in this episode compared to the last.
