- Here are some various notes that might not make sense until you've watched the video:
Note 1: I tried to make the stats calculations more accessible to non-maths people, so I didn't talk about p-values or anything. I thought maybe a distribution plot is the best way to understand it, but maybe not!
Note 2: that Claude clip at 15:24 is super weird! I hadn't realised quite how weird it was until I was editing. The green replaces an orange, and then that orange goes somewhere else! It's possible this is another way to resurrect pegs, but I haven't managed to see it.
Note 3: although the ball doesn't experience any friction, it does still lose energy when sliding up a curved slope, due it technically being a series of inelastic collisions.
Note 4: I noticed during editing at 35:16 that the letters of "Extreme Fever" go transparent if the ball is behind it - I've never noticed that before!
Note 5: For the full clip of the hidden music track, see • Peggle Deluxe PC - Unu...
There are definitely more questions about Peggle that I haven't answered in this video. If you've found something I've missed, please post it in a comment below!
I focused more on the technical side of the game rather than its development in this video, but if you're interested in the history of PopCap then I'd recommend looking some stuff up - in particular, "The Oral History of PopCap Games" by MinnMax here on RUclips is very interesting.
I took the old interviews from the PopCap website, although you might need to use the WayBack Machine or something to find all the links. I included more of Brian Rothstein in this video but there are interviews with others as well. I also didn't include it, but apparently he left PopCap after having a number of disagreements with the artists over ridiculously specific background elements and deciding that working on Peggle wasn't too good on his mental health! But you can check the discord for his own words on that.

The titles on the dialogue boxes remind me of the subject lines on emails, like you're receiving formal correspondence from each of the peggle masters
Props for the dxBallProfilepicture. Brings Back memories:)
I can't believe splorks blast doesn't add momentum, my whole world view is shattered.

I disbelieve that Warren's magic hat does not change the physics - it legitimately seems like the ball bounces more/ is floaty-er with the hat than without.
@@EmeraldLavigne idk how moddable the game is but i guess the real test would be to make the magic hat sprite invisible and see if it still reads as floatier.
@@EmeraldLavigneit feels floatier with the hat because of how the hat floats above the ball, it moves up while the ball falls.
The ways the game rigs things in your favor are incredibly fascinating to me. I knew about the coin, anyone who has played peggle long enough will notice that the odds are in your favor, but i had never heard of microzen or the spooky zen before. Both of these paint a picture of a very specific game design philosophy of prioritizing "fun" over telling the truth to the player. Techniques like these are not value neutral, i know games like candy crush or fortnite have systems to either manufacture insane combos or fill up lobbies with easy bot players to get you to experience the highs of the game to make it more likely that you'll get addicted to them, but in peggle deluxe, a game that you purchase once and that the devs don't make any money off of you continuing to play it, i think they're really just there to make the experience smoother and more satisfying.
What's especially funny about the coin to me is that, to my knowledge, the game never explicitly tells you that there's a 50/50 chance of getting a free ball. It just uses the visual of a spinning coin with the options on either side to VERY strongly imply it using associations.
Fantastic video, by the way. Very well put together. I was surprised to see how small your channel is. Excited to see what you make next.
You make a good point. This kind of behind the scenes rigging feels a lot less malicious when you can tell it was just to make the game more satisfying, not as a manipulation tactic to increase play time
I love how features like this are meant to fly under the radar too; its a lot of work to subtly make the player have more fun. It'd take something away from it if you knew the game was helping you. (i just realized the video says more or less this at 39:12)
Nice analysis! I didn't know that about Candy Crush and Fortnite. I wonder if the Bejeweled games do the same.
Bot lobbies in battle royales are tutorial levels, not any of this bullshit about trying to get you addicted. They get you addicted by adding all of your faveorite songs, characters, emotes. Having battle passes that require weekly challeneges to complete. Bot lobbies get you used to the game.
It reminds me more of "true hit" in fire emblem.
"Just a bunch of characters playing air hockey in an open field trying to sell you a certificate for a game a unicorn made up"
Simple, yet beautiful
50:03 - The Peggle Institute is actually shown visually in Peggle Nights, on the right of the opening screen and in the level Water Whirled, although that second appearance complicates things with it seemingly implying that the Institute is deep underwater?
This was a treat to watch, I had no clue going through Adventure Mode again gave you new dialogue from the masters
i mean, it’s possible that water whirled is a dream.
I think that's supposed to be Marina finding a portal to the institute!

@@alanpendragon1316 - All I'm saying is, I hear the person who uploaded a certain thing to the Internet Archive is very handsome even if they are also very, very weird.
From someone who has been speedrunning this game for about 3 years now: this is awesome! There's huge dedication to documenting and understanding peggle in your own way in this video and it's entertaining and informative throughout. Truly a great collection of peggle lore
Huge thanks to yours and Britsha's GDQ runs (and everyone surrounding that) for getting me interested in modern Peggle!

waiting for Peggle Secrets, a mod about the dark secrets all the Peggle masters try to hide
I think the reason you can aim higher with fireball is because you would otherwise have situations where getting fireball may cause you to lose. Since pegs can spawn higher than you can aim (I think), you normally have to bounce the ball off another peg to hit the higher ones. If, however, your ball cannot bounce off of pegs, then you cannot hit those higher pegs with it. It would feel bad for a power-up to mean you can no longer get certain pegs until the power wears off.
The phrase "Peggle Discord Server" sent deep and dark reverberations through my soul. I didn't like hearing that phrase.
Truly horrifying
true! peggle deserves a public forum of some kind, not some secret non-search engine indexable thing
- @Ramonatho, 2 days before he joined the peggle cult
Glad it wasn't just me lol, Peggle is a game from a simpler time and it should not be tainted with sinful things like "Discord" and "microtransactions"

An hour long video about Peggle intricacies? The RUclips algorithm has blessed me
Fr
I always knew this game was made with love but there's nothing quite like knowing one of the recurring characters has absurdly deep-rooted gambling problems. Great video man! It's nice to see the legacy that Peggle has left behind, with such a strong and active fanbase filled with passionate people like you!
Random facts about really specific games is my favourite kind of videos on RUclips
i too love this particular part of autism
I really enjoyed the format of this video! I honestly can’t say I’ve ever watched something like it before, other than your Obra Dinn video. It’s really interesting to see a game so comprehensively analyzed and catalogued without the lens of a critique :D
super glad this showed up in my recommended. I'm an avid watcher of Grayfruit's peggle content (and there's an awful lot) and there were quite a few things I'd never seen before here! Also, wasn't expecting to get emotional at the ending of this... damn
Hello fellow grayfruit Peggle enjoyer.
Good to see another Grayfruit fan here! This is the best non-fruitman Peggle video I've seen yet.

The fact that you can find Bjorn's skeleton in PvZ implies that Peggle and PvZ take place in the same universe and Bjorn is canonically dead.
the popcap cinematic universe...
This video is FANTASTIC!! It is so well paced and edited and I loved hearing about under-the-hood game mechanics I never knew about. The stuff about the characters and story at the end was also super interesting. That and the digression about Peggle's success with the developer interviews tied up the video really nicely. Great work! 👏
POV you're searching the comments for grayfruit but only find scattered namedrops.
finally the chuzzle content i need
Genuinely really good video. Never even played Peggle before but it was an interesting watch nonetheless.
(I did also see the name changes, and I'm honestly unsure what to name the video either, but I do agree it should have Peggle in there somewhere. Hoping you'll get a boost in views soon!)
From the name alone I thought this was going to be a video about a level pack (like Peggle Dinners) but I am still thoroughly enjoying this
"I'm sorry babe I can't come over there's an hour long video about Peggle 1"
See you on the front page of the internet, this video is gas
I admit i overlooked this the first time it showed up in my recommended and man i feel silly for that, im so glad youtube went "no really, youll love this" because yeah i love shit like this
Ive never played peggle in my life, but this was an instant subscription for me. I LOVE videos like this, so much attention to detail and care for every aspect of a game. A thorough demonstration of why this game is great, thank you
As soon as you mentioned the snail and the mushroom, i rubbed my hands together
This is exactly what i was looking for
Thank you for this video
interesting to see that this video fulfilled someone's niche interest
@@thedude0000-b2j I was just in the mood for something specific and useless
This is an absolute blast from the past. I loved the game but only had the trial version which had a limited amount of plays, so I kept my computer on and the trial version open as long as I could. Really high quality video and love your narration, thank you for sharing and taking the time to put it together! I wanna play it now.
fantastic video! you've given our little speedrunning community alot of info to look over, we love breaking apart the game like this, thanks for all your work
Wait, you sure magic hat doesn't affect physics??
I've played peggle nights a lot and noticed that with the hat on, the ball tends to have weird physics. One such case is in Renfield's level themed around weird drooping clocks. If you play as Warren, and aim fully at the top right corner, then depending on whether or not your ball has magic hat, it hits different pegs. This is what I remember at least
As for the video, such a good one to watch, and even learned a lot of facts like how zen works and the hidden character dialogue, definitely giving a like!
39:16 this being the craziest twist in a video essay since shapeland omg
It's incredible how much foreshadowing there is for Nights. Splork's adventure ending with bowling, Renfield's stages having particularly good composition and detail, Tula lamenting being stuck in the ground...
A (near) universal trait amongst games that stay successful long term: genuine, personable, random, seemingly connected secrets.
Cheat codes and Easter eggs were born from debug commands and test levels. Sometimes bugs become features.
Let the devs cook, that polish is 300 times more work for 3000000 times more enjoyment.
90 seconds in and my mind is blown. Can't wait to watch the rest from the GOAT.
RUclips recommendations going hard wtf. I cannot fathom how this video felt like a 10 minute romp but was actually 54 minutes long.
only recently got into peggle, and i'm barely into the jimmy lightning section of this video, and i already adore it. the super guide arrow key revelation shook me to my core. i use that all the time but i thought it was just an artifact of tiny aiming changes
ahhh!! you can fast forward shots!!!!!!
I am so happy you're back! Here's to a new video🎉
🎉
This is a crazy video to randomly come out for me right now. I just purchased both peggle and peggle nights on the steam sale after having not played through them since childhood, I used to play through pirated copies of the games on an old laptop that was given to me by my brother. I found myself kind of sad as I finished peggle nights only to realize the game never really got another sequel. Peggle 2 is only available on xbox, and I certainly don't consider the mobile game a true sequel. This video was great, and I'm glad it got recommended to me randomly by youtube.
way more of an in depth video than i ever expected someone to make on peggle
This video is genuinely super cool. Never really thought about this kind of stuff, its cool seeing such a deep dive into such an iconic game!! Love when I can tell someone is passionate about what they're talking about.
Did not expect to see a dev getting emotional at the mention of making games post Peggle, and i REALLY didn't expect to almost get emotional from it myself xD
fantastic video, cant believe theres so much i didnt know about even after 100%
The Peggle deep dive we didn't know we needed. Truly blessed
what a lovely little video. Thank you for blessing my feed
Very high quality video, underrated
I don't have an hour right now to watch this. But I watched the first minute and a half and know when I get to it, this will be good.
I've been playing peggle on stream for a couple years now, literally just hours upon hours of versing the master mode bot and my viewers betting channel points on who will win (I always lose). It really is such an addicting and fun game, and I would've never guessed it went this far into the story, and how the game works. Might help me a bit with beating the bot haha, great video!
This game and your footage of the game are both cracked out of their mind
Hearing Zuma mentioned in the same breath as Bejeweled is wild. There's a titan of the casual gaming world that just disappeared!
Eeka shaaka Zuma!
Actually just listening to someone calmly explain like everything from a game. I love it
Grayfruit NEEDS to see this.
A good RUclips video made by a human being, in this economy? Instantly subscribed. You're a good RUclipsr in a sea of content farms. Incredible stuff! What you make is art.
this video has way more quality than i was expecting(not to say i was expecting bad, but that i liked a lot more than i thought i would), keep the good work and is not long that the algorithm will finally show the world your work
Im around 15 mins into the vid, but I love your style of going on tangents then coming back to the main topic lol
The brief moment where you equate developers leaving PopCap during the buyout and the changed cast of characters and different art direction of 2 and onward with one another, framing it like the characters in universe very much left just like their creators, is genius and sad
Holy cow this is underrated. Absolutely incredible video man
Very fun way to present the game, think back on it, and appreciate it.
About that music: I remember seeing something a few years back about how to get it to play. There's something you can do (if I remember correctly it involves loading replays) that increments the music played - instead of choosing a track randomly, it selects the next one in the list. If you do it enough times, you can get the usually-not-hearable track to play. I have tried searching for this but cannot find it for the life of me.
Nice to see this video is astronomically more views then your math videos. Society hasn’t gone down the drain yet.
i didn't expect to spend my afternoon watching a nearly hour long video on peggle, but man am i glad i did so
You had a lot of SLICK replays. There was so much in here that I didn't know about Peggle. Even though this video was an hour long, it was dense with information. That's seriously impressive. Absolutely great video!
Absolutely underrated video.
Thank you sir, for keeping the flame of peggle alight. Bjorn's blessings to you.
I hyperfixated on Peggle for at least 2 months back in 2021 and I considered myself to know a lot about the game. This video is proof that in fact, I am a fraud and I need to turn in my Peggling license. Amazing video by the way. I love this game series to death.
I have seen this game being a room of like 10 20 year olds stand at their feet in celebration as the last ball hits the last peg in college. Such a fond memory.
You forget to mention that Bjorn is a HUGE fan of trivia
The amount of detail on this Video and the Game is amazing!
As someone who loves Peggle, I had no idea that there where so many secrets. Also, thanks for explaining "crumble pegs." I was so confused as to why sometimes the game would wait for my ball to get stuck and do a full screen clear, while other times, juts say f it, and remove 1 or 2 pegs while the ball was still in motion.
I have never played Peggle. I have barely heard of Peggle prior to today. But I WILL watch this entire video, and I WILL become a Peggle fan thanks to it.
"Everything you ever wanted to know about X game and more"-type videos my beloved
This was the greatest, most informative and probably ONLY video of one of my most favorite childhood games I've ever seen! 🤣
Very nicely done it was entertaining throughout.
You kind of remind me of Oliver Lugg's channel. Math person making deep dive engaging videos with a calm voice. Very enjoyable. Thank you.
Finally I find that I am not alone in the world regarding Peggle. I always hoped there were other fanatical expert players somewhere and now I know. Your should do a Peggle Nights video as well. That was my introduction to Peggle and I absolutely love it and think it was vastly improved compared to Peggle.
This was an absolute joy, and like the 7th "small, brilliant developer absorbed by giant company and immediately disbanded for microtransactions" reference I've heard this week alone, so it got me bizarrely emotional at the end there
Only now realizing "multiball" is a pun of "multiple" and not just multi-ball
Wait it is???
I'm a big fan of sequenced module music and this is literally the first time I've ever heard of Peggle using the file format for its music. I'm stunned.
I think it's also cool to point out that Warrens eyes also turn Ying Yang when he gets a zen ball
Right?? It's something I remember very clearly playing this game as a child
Please start uploading more. Got this video on my suggested page and loved it. 5 videos in a year? Get on with it mate. Your fanbase is waiting 😊

Im glad you made this ty, both shows perfectly the developers love for the game and why people like you or all of us enjoy a game that can seem so simple.
I've never been so happy to be recommended a video in my entire life
i watched this video without realizing my headphones weren't working, and with zero sound, the first minute is actually terrifying
I love Peggle now more than ever. Thanks, Limited Fun!
When you mentioned the in-between "facing the player" frames of the characters and DIDN'T show Lord Cinderbottom, I thought for sure you were building up to the fact he's a cyclops.
