@@Turbovanilli typically when we see those situations it is just price point and availability. Love these videos man. I've had a legacy BH5 EJ 208 gtb JDM import to the UK, with twin turbos, was quirky for sure, the "Valley of death" between 3k-4k revs was really noticeable in 4th and 5th gear. Now I have a BP5 EJ20Y twinscroll, much smoother, but feels less fun somehow. I'm trying to swap in a EZ30 and turbo it, but it's not cheap! Much love from Scotland 🏴
Thank you for watching! Really appreciate the support! Yeah the ez30 is an amazing platform but can be pretty costly. I always wanted to build a hybrid EJ20Y using a 2.5L block and EJ20Y heads. Still would have torque and parts are plentiful! Maybe you can try that?
The difference between the heads differ from year but the version 7-9 and the ej20x heads are very different. Cams different, sensors different, port size, and as you mentioned AVCS. The EJ20x are very similar to the ej25 heads though and also the version 10 and up ej207’s
2002 wrx With some simple bolt on mods like downpipe and electronic boost controller and a tune would it perform well or should I go with a bigger turbo setup? Thanks
This is kinda old now but I’d love a detailed breakdown of the Jdm ej205 vs 207 v7-8 heads. Not the ports but the cams and I’ve heard the 207 has larger valves. Info gets really hazy. Or if the avcs command between the two is any different. Example of what I mean is like the k series 50 degree vtc vs the 25 degree. If the Jdm avcs on the 205 is any different than the 207s
Hey mate, would be awesome if you could do a video explaining the differences of jdm grb ej207 vs worldwide gr ej257 as well as the differences of the grb 207 vs a aus spec blob eye ej207. As I’m currently importing a grb at the moment. Shout out from Australia
Yes you sure can! If you have the newer one from the facelift Legacy you could even use the full long block and just install the Legacy manifold. Main difference wiring wise is the exhaust side cam sensors. Pre facelift is two wires vs 3 wires and air pump on the facelift models.
I bought a usdm 02 wrx with a supposed jdm motor swapped into it. I was hoping to see if there is a way to tell which one I have without disassembling the motor.
It is most likely a v6 long block or Legacy engine. First I would start with the casting numbers on the bottom of the heads first. For the block I am pretty sure you would have to remove the timing cover unless you can tell from the number on the back of the left side block. This is a great right up that might have some answers for you. www.clubsub.org.nz/forum/index.php?/topic/41534-ej205-ej206-ej207-ej208-short-block-identification/
The biggest difference is displacement. Ej207 is also a twin scroll turbo after the blobeye and the internals of the heads are also different. The EJ207 also revs out to 8000rpms🙂
What type of price point can you find like a bugeye 207 engine for compared to a 205? My car has 210k miles on it and I'm curious if the engine goes how much more it'd be to swap a 207 in compared to just replacing with the factory stuff
If I use an aftermarket ECU, is it possible to swap in the newer EJ207 from GRB/VAB into the GDB chasis? What kind of mechanical modification is required?
It would be a lot of work. The sensors to the GRB are Hall effect (3 wires) vs the GD’s reluctor sensors (2 wires). Then as @hazoorule mentioned you also have to wire the exhaust avcs solenoids and cam sensors. For the throttle body it would probably better to just use the GD manifold or you would have to wire in the electronic throttle body and pedal.
I owned a 5-speed manual transmission Legacy BL5 with the AVCS version of the EJ204 that made just shy of 200 hp. That car was very rewarding to rev out. It had a very audible VTEC-like engagement at 6,000 RPMs up to the 7k RPM limit. The power bump was actually noticeable. I sold it to go turbo, but boy do I miss that car!

@@johnorr2241 for the EJ205’s they are pretty happy around 300-320 whp but above that you start getting into danger zone with the rods. They have a slightly higher compression ratio so they react well to boost.
I would say there’s no point revving past 6k with the VF30. I have a 2001 bugeye STi, and the turbo is gutless above that RPM. Unless you increase the timing advance significantly. I have a 100LL avgas tune that enables exactly this.
@@ericn7698 Definitely agree, but I was more interested in the ability to bring up the RPMS, not for power but just wondering if the ej205 would fail lol. Only reason is for the technical courses we run on Gymkhana it is faster to stay in gear than to shift up right before a corner.

Great info guys. Is it possible to put ej20k heads straight onto a 207 short block or do the heads need porting to match the short block?
We have actually done it with no chamber matching! We used ej20k heads on a GRB short block with a 1.2mm head gasket and it performed great.
