Feel for you there, I did exactly the same in my evo 8
I just had it fully forged at a cost of 6000 then put it into 3rd rather than 5th
12,000 revs later it’s another rebuilt, worse still they rebuilt it wrong thanks to a terrible garage in Sheffield, grrr and I had to sell it with no engine 😢 all in cost me 10k with the car out of action for 6 months
Tbh it actually put me off manuals
Question: Why do you look for all these weight savings when your driving skill doesn't warrant any of this? It's an act of futility.
Ah man. This is why I never wanted a manual track car - terrified of money shifts. Hoping the damage is not too severe, and main thing is you're OK
Thanks buddy! And very true, could have been much worse ❤️
I was thinking same thing. Manual for a sweet heart roadster and maybe an auto clutch for any track car ?? I wouldn’t have thought about this. I’d easily made same mistake.
I think you can theoretically cause this on the DCT: be in automatic in third, for example, switch to manual and downshift to second only to realize the auto had downshifted to second before the switchover and you have accidentally manually shifted to first.
@@f87 That's why Porsche PDKs log over-revs
@@f87 no all automatic gearboxes (certainly modern ones) will NOT let you downshift if it would over rev the engine.
That's a hard vid to watch Joe, harder for you to make it I'm sure.... thanks for sharing the painful experience - hope it doesn't slow you down making such great content. fingers crossed for you and the M2
Thank you Ian! I deliberated for hours after being recovered if I should make/finish the video or not... Mentally it was hard to film, but as this is now.my living and I thankfully had a sponsor, it had to be done 👌 Cheers for the support, let's see where this goes...
There are ups and down in every job we choose - this is a downer for sure but you’ll bounce back in no time 👍
And this is why we all love you Joe👍🏻 You are genuine
I immediately knew it was a money shift. You can’t blame the crank hub for this mate 🤣 money shift can kill any engine.
I’m really gutted for you.
You can genuinely see the pain in your face and I feel for you.
This car and your love for BMWs in general, has drove my personal love for them, so you really should feel proud for what you have achieved on your channel.
I’m sure you will get this sorted and get it back on track in no time!! 🤞🤞🤞
Hearing you talk us through what happened…my heart literally sank. 😢
Your description of the damage is exactly how I felt when my rod bearing spun on my M3. Good luck with the repair and hope it isn’t too painful.
So sorry to hear about the accident. Hopefully you got lucky and the damage is not as bad as you expected.
You know that you've made it as a RUclips influencer when you start making titles and thumbnails like this one 👍
at least he is not click baiting!
@@victorlussier5477 Well one step at a time. With a lot of hard work and perseverance he can get there some day.
@@victorlussier5477 like some youTubers you mean. Do you have any names you'd like to share with us Lol?........P
He didn’t die and he’s getting into a M3 touring really like the guy but it’s a first world problem
@@theraving90s65 M4 Touring.... Interesting 🤔
Gutted for you mate, hope final prognosis isn't bad. Looking forward to seeing your M2 back out on track..
Absolutely gutted for you Joe. I was kicking myself at the weekend for curbing a wheel…can only imagine how this must feel. Will be keeping everything crossed that the damage isn’t too severe. Really glad that you are okay though and wishing you all the best.
Absolutely gutted for you mate. Such a tough watch and I hope that things aren’t as bad as they seem. To be fair, the Armour All stuff looks decent. May have to give it a try. Anyway fingers crossed for you mate and hope you get some good luck after they have fully assessed the engine.
I am really gutted for you. I hope this doesn't get you down too much. There is nothing worse than getting the car looking spotless and it ending up in the garage. I spent a whole day preparing my son's car before a quick visit to the garage for a tyre and a track rod end. It ended up being off the road for two weeks needing a steering rack & 2 rod ends and 2 tyres and the best part of a grand. Deposit for my new Trek EMTB down the plug hole. Looking forward to your car back on track soon better than ever and you putting this chapter of life behind you.
Sorry to hear that mate. Can happen to anyone. I admire your straightforward and transparent way of discussing it. Bravo
Thanks bro, hope all is well mate ❤️
Sorry to hear Joe. That’s terrible. If I had to guess, I’d same you spun a bearing. The crack hub would slip under normal conditions and usually wouldn’t warrant a new engine but a money shift will need a new engine. It happens to the best of us and it sucks regardless of financial situations. Try to land a S58!!!! Stay up brother and best of luck
S58 car or for this build?
@@Wolff36 for this build! Why not. I think it’s the better engine versus a S55 or any other Bmw engine. Not in terms of sound or fun but reliability/track use and power
Love your channel mate, one of the absolute best. Really sorry about what happened, I feel quite sick about it for you. 🤞 for you.
Really Tough day Joe! Hope you managed to get fixed and the cost is not too horrific! Keep up the amazing content!
Sorry to hear this, gutted for you. Hopefully not as bad as you think and can get it sorted soon 👍
Gutted for you Joe, so sad to see this happen. I hope the damage is not too bad and the car is back better than ever in no time.
Fingers crossed the damage isnt too bad Joe, Gotta take the rough with the smooth sometimes unfortunately, keep doing what you do best!
So sorry to hear this Joe! Fingers crossed the fix is not too expensive!
What an amazing attitude you have shown to a gut wrenching situation, don’t think I could be so calm and level headed after that!
Oh man, that must be gutting Joe. Hope its back and better than ever soon.
Every manual owners nightmare 🥺
The M2 will be in good hands with the boys at Swift Perf!!
But still, can hear the worry in your voice. Thankfully, as you’ve said, you & everyone else ok.
Worth noting that this can happen on the road too - so hope it doesn’t put any people off thinking about going on track someday
Gutted for you mate, couldn’t of happened to a nicer and more genuine person 😢 I can fully understand the sleepless nights as something like this is devastating for a petrolhead, I came close to money shifting once but was lucky enough to save it before it over revved too much. Things do go sideways sometimes but you always come back stronger and better, something positive will come out of it, keep your chin up. All the best Joe.
So sorry to hear this, and it's such a beautiful car and configuration you have there. Am sure you'll see the better end to all this, but not without some pain on the way. Looking forward to see this great car in more great videos no matter how long it takes.
Best of luck Joe,have loved your BMW videos for years .Hope it all works out for the best for you !
Gutted for you Joe 😢
Crank hub definitely failed but not due to the extra horses or torque, shifting into 3rd at 7.5k in 4th is gunna absolutely turn that lump into a jewelry box. Hope I'm wrong but it doesn't sound good 🙈
Looking forward to the update 🤞🏻
Joe, the main thing is that you're okay. So sorry for what is clearly a painful time and a tricky video to make, but we all love you man, and your content remains the best for genuine petrolheads ❤❤❤
Sorry to hear mate that is terrible news, but glad you’re okay. Hopefully it’s not costly to repair and it’s back in the road soon.
Terrible to see this happen mate but glad to see you were unharmed. Fingers crossed the repairs come in lower than anticipated.
I was there at the trackday and you came over to my and my mates, we had the Punto, panda and M2 comp with the spoiler. Good luck with the repair
Good vid. It's always that "one more lap" that does you in !
Strongs Joe - upward and onward! Looking forward to seeing the collection video when its all back to its former glory! It looks awesome! Very tasteful mods!
Gutted for you man! But so sincere and honest, this is why we all love Joe!! something similar happened to me years ago. Sending you best wishes. I'm sure M2 will be back bigger than ever.
Steering column extension is a game changer that is often overlooked!
A bad day at the office. 😢
May I suggest you do Harry's Garage Style videos on the rebuild process as much as you can, and generate some revenues to help you with the costs. Your fan base will be there for you no matter what, and will watch them even if the production value is low.
It is the 60 Thousand Dollar Car. They can rebuild it, they have the technology. Better than it was before. Better, Stronger, Faster
Fingers crossed for you Joe. Been in a similar situation with a TTRS where I melted a piston, didn’t turn out to be anywhere near as bad as I thought cost wise.
I'd be reconsidering whatever short shift kit you have in this, even with the longer stick. I had an E21 with a BMA short shifter and while it had a satisfying bolt action feeling, there was too little travel between gates. In my current car (with a tremec tr6060) I've kept the shift linkage stock and even so I've had a couple of on-track moments where I've questioned which gate I've hit! Always a possibility but short shifters only increase the risk.
So sorry Joe. Especially on the first track day after the mods. Hopefully it all works out well.
So sorry to hear your news Joe, bummer !! Hope it's not too bad !
Really sorry to hear this Joe. It happens to the best of us ..especially when you have an engine tune. I hope all works out for you in the end.🎉
Get rid of that stupid shifter mate... I can't understand why people buy these horrible things...
We fitted it because I couldn't ergonomically reach the regular one with my far lower and much improved driving position. Plenty of F80/82/87 owners have done the same Money shift with the standard shifter.
@@JoeAchilles1 Your setting yourself up to fail though. It is going to be much less precise for driver inputs. I hope things are better than feared 👍🏻
Been there done that. About twenty years ago in a 964 RS at Brands hatch. Bent all six exhaust valves from memory . Rebuilt it myself (I am an engineer) and went on to do many more track days . Hope it's not as bad as you think. It's extremely easy to do. Feel your pain.
Sorry to watch this unfolding Joe, whatever happens the main thing is you weren't injured. To make you smile (if possible at the moment), if this was on an M2 Forum there would absolutely be someone asking 'can I reserve a bid on the seats mate if you strip it?' Cheers, Kevin
That sucks man. The metallic noises are bad news.
Crank hub won't have anything to do with this though. Money shift will damage any engine, this will likely need an engine rebuild 😬 But you'll need to wait until the engine has been opened up to really know the extent of it.
I destroyed an engine on my first proper trackday, a tuned and fairly highly modified BMW 335i. Engine seized up and was completely ruined, had to replace it. Not a pleasant experience but with trackdays and tuned engines, it's the risk we take 🫠
That experience has tuned me off aftermarket tunes but not trackdays. Would rather keep the engines stock (maybe a light tune) and focus on the handling side. Unless you're ok losing an engine it's not worth the trouble IMO.
gutted for you , happens to the best of us , happened to me in my type r but luckily didnt get damaged , hope damage is minimal in your case , will wait for update on your channel , i can relate with the sleepless nights after something like this 😢
Sorry to hear the devastating experience Joe, let’s hope and pray that it does cost too much to fix
Good luck with the diagnosis Joe, fingers crossed for you!
My brother and I have done the same unfortunately. Don't give up on it, its all worth continuing the journey when its back.
Tough break Joe. I hope it gets sorted without too much expense.
Man, sorry to see this happen to you. Hope you’re able to get it fixed soon. It’ll feel raw just now, but at least you’ll have a story to tell on VINwiki in a few years time. 👀
Haha thank you, yes there will eventually be a plus side and I will live and hopefully learn 🫣
Most important thing is your OK and that's all that's matters. We all support you Joe.
Sorry Joe, I didn’t know about this! I know the feeling of making costly mistakes, it’s not a nice one. I’m confident this is going to all work out!
Sorry to hear Joe. Hopefully all goes well with the fix.
Ouchhhhh Joe! Given your last videos at Bedford I thought it was going to be sliding off the track damage.. as rubbish as it is (we’ve all been there waking up with that horrid gut feeling after something like this) it’s only metal and a good excuse to build a new motor up stronger 💪 watched the adverts through all the way to help with the build costs 😅
The good news is now you can do a simple build like getting aftermarket rods, and the car will be reliable on the track for years to come. Love this build!
Gutted for you! Hope it’s not as bad as you think and that it’s sorted fast. All the best fella
Sorry to hear this, Joe.
As you say, it feels like some time away from the car will help. Looking forward to more updates and eventually the M2 back on road. Best of luck.
Life’s little tests Joe, you will get through it. Continue the great work your doing.
Honestly Joe, I feel your pain. My car (just an f20 118i pre lci, so nothing special, but still very special to me) probably needs a full engine rebuild and it's gonna cost me a lot. Sure, it won't be nearly as expensive as rebuliding an s55, but it's still gonna cost me a good chunk of what I have saved up and has been causing me lots of stress. It's all gonna be good in the end though, I know your m2 means a lot to you and once you'll have it back, you'll be filled with joy!
Great video Joe! Also sorry to hear what happened. Fingers crossed you can get it all sorted out mate
May i ask where you got the steering column extender?
I have an E82 1M clone, and im 6'3, also looking to get some buckets, but in general thats the one thing i wish i could do, extend the column so my knees arent as bent up!
Would be great to know!
Such a tough watch, best of luck for the fix. Definitely having second thoughts about taking my manual M2 on track now 😢
Had a similar experience in my Ford gt but my case I spun it up a little too hard like 8000grand, and ended up snapping the cam bolt and pushing the cam gear through the rocker and valves to piston, wasn't cheap, hopefully yours isn't as extensive as that, but is say get rid of that shifter mate unless your going a dog box. Awesome M2 mate love it.
And that’s known as a money shift. Crank hub or not, that will screw any motor up.
Hope the timing hasn’t jumped too much on the crank hub .. good luck when they get to look at it 🤞🏻
Gutted for you Joe! My crank hub slipped a few months back, it’s a horrible feeling 😢 At least now you’ll have peace of mind when it’s all fixed and you can push on even more. Back better than ever 💪🏻
I thought crank hub slip never happens!! It’s just internet talk.
I don't want to say "good video" because it's not good to see. But what really stands out here is your transparency and humility in showing/admitting what happened. Well done for this video, takes alot of courage to put yourself out there like this.
What a shame, Joe! Fortunately, as you mentioned, there are no injuries or anything really serious. Hopefully, you will have your M2 fixed soon.
Cheers
😭 wouldn’t the damage be worse if you’d had your crank hub done? The stock design is there to stop engine damage when over revved isn’t it?
I’d get rid of that shifter, looks so easy to money shift.
Worse case you can get a used S55 for around 6k, plenty of supply as loads get crashed.
Sadly not, the crank hub slipping can let the valves smash into the pistons. It’s just a bit of questionable design, since improved on the S58.
Genuinely gutted for you Joe. I know it’s easier said than done but try not to over think about it and keep positive. We are all here because you are you and one way or another it will be sorted.
Gutted for you Joe! When you said you haven’t slept well and woken up multiple times a night I felt it - my S5 is broken after a remap and is in the garage :(
swift perfomances unit is lovely. All the best mate. I hope you get it sorted soon.
So sorry to hear about the car Joe. Fingers crossed that it's not as bad as you fear
Hang in there Joe! Things happen. Stay positive
I did that once and the sound it made was pretty brutal. I’m glad it was an old army vehicle and the army had plenty of replacements for that particular piece of junk. I hope it’s not the whole engine but if it overrevved like that, it could very much be scrap metal now…great channel anyways 👍
That’s pretty tough Joe. I trust you are getting over it, helped by the busy agenda. Cheers mate ! Tom
Oh no Joe! A sorry situation for sure. As you've always done, remain positive and i'm sure the guys at Swift will have the mighty F87 M2C back dominating the tarmac soon enough. All the best mate
So sorry JA, hopefully it’s not too costly to fix, made me want to do the crank hub fix on my f80m3
So sorry to hear this Joe. Your attitude to setbacks is great. Everything can be fixed but you are irreplaceable. I know nothing about cars but curious to understand if the same thing can happen to a ‘stock’ m2. Thinking of buying one next.
Soo Gutted for you m8, hope its not too bad. Definitely resonated with what you said about waking up thinking it was a dream, felt like that many times over the years having my cars crashed into when parked on london streets. On a brighter note, your still alive, have the m3 touring, a family etc. chin up and onwards and upwards. Hope other potential sponsors notice your honesty and integrity, and quality of work… maybe its worth leaving a car you love so much stock and getting a decent but cheap 135i coup and turning that into a track monster , such mistakes on a project like that wouldn't bring such a financial penalty , nor would it hurt as much, whilst also being just as competent on track with similar mods.
Ouch hurty engine 😨
Fingers crossed it’s not a new lump required Joe 🤞🏻
This is one of the reasons I hate driving gloves, as they reduce feel and make this sort of thing more likely 😢
Sorry about this unfortunately case mate….as long as you’re okay! Fingers crossed the m2cs gets back on the road soon.
Sorry brother! Keep the spirits up…..can only go upwards and no doubt it’ll shred the track again soon 💪💪
Sad to hear about your M2, Joe 😢 The most important thing is that everyone is OK! Your videos have ignited my passion for BMW's and I've been fortunate enough to recently purchase a 2022 M4 manual. I'm not much of a track guy, but I do go on plenty of spirited drives throughout rural Pennsylvania. After watching this video - and especially being new to manual transmissions - I will be extremely careful not to make the same mistake (which is so easy to do). One man's misfortune is another's blessing I suppose! Praying 🙏 for a speedy recovery for the M2 (my favorite car of all time) and for your nights to be more restful. You still have GRIILEZ to enjoy 😊Cheers Joe!
Say hello to a towing company which will be towing your shitty m4 xD Should have bought auto and not listen to idiot talking bullshit about manuals. You will be slow, you will misshift a lot - and you wil money shift eventually.
I got a m2c manual too that I track. Always scared of money shifts buts its the nature of it. Had it been today I woulda bought the dct since because of track days. As many have said this has nothing to do with the crank hub, classic money shift 😢
A manual m2 is great on the road but on track this is always at the back of your mind hope it gets fixed soon I wrecked an s50b32 on my old m3 I feel your pain
Feel sorry for you. We all been there. Hope everything works out fine and keep up your great contents!
Feel for you on this one Joe, hopefully water under the bridge soon and the M2 is back happy and healthy.
Dont stress itll be sorted in time. Chin up and keep on going
Sorry to hear Joe! Hopefully the bill isn’t too bad 🤞
After doing this myself in racing i feel your pain, i guess its one drawback to a manual instead of DCT, it happens, we've all miss shifted at one point, its life, hopefully wont be too expensive for you!
Ah man, that sucks! At least you weren't too far from home - I broke down on track around 3 hours from home.
What a build! New engine aside, I am convinced I need me one of these for track use.
Chin up brother you’re safe and that really is the main thing, hope it’s not too expensive for you 😎
Sorry 2 hear, wot a nightmare hope u get it sorted 1 way or another, keep up the great videos
Fingers crossed for the repair Joe. Are your stickers still available (as seen on this video?) can’t see them on ctrl & shift. Cheers
easily done, buzzed my Mi16 motor same way peak rpm on the ECU shows 8600 and the rev limit is ~7k , thankfully got away with it, sturdy old thing! But feel your pain , hope you can get it sorted without too much ££
All the support to you Joe. I hope it isnt that bad
Will be , did the same myself
