BMW M2 CS on-road review. Worth the £23k premium over the M2 Competition?

- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- The 2020 BMW M2 CS is the ultimate edition of the M2 Competition with lots of carbon parts to drop the weight down as much as possible and 450bhp, a jump of 50bhp over the regular M2 Competition. But all this comes at a price as it costs £23,000 more than the M2 Competition. Is it worth it? Find out here.

The curb weights are such a great addition to these videos. Real world curb weights are not an easy piece of information to come by, even from manufacturers, so the fact that Harry has his own scales and weighs each car is massively valuable.
Harry's scales need a bit of calibration methinks.
@@Hypersonik Massive weight savings vs identical claimed weight as Competition = homologation reasons. It is not so easy as publish some number in the brochure these days...
@@Ariskot007 Harry had the Boxster GTS on there weighing 1285kg IIRC. No, just no.
@@FalconXE302 They can be out by upto 100kg
sportauto weighed a DKG one at 1588kg w/ a full tank.
As with all cars:
Do I need it? No.
Do I want it? Maybe.
Can I afford it? Hell, no!
But we should never stop dreaming
Harry, could you do a last dance with a Lotus Elise before it goes away ?
It’s what my mum would call “a bit dear.”
And Nick your mum is nearly always right my late Mum was .
HAAA...excellent mate. Mine too.
Show her the value of M3 CSLs today Vs a standard M3 and I'm sure she'll change her tune.
"A bloody rip off!"
Yes dear
Harry and Ian Tyrrell complete my weekend.
Yes they do
Well said, Sir.👍🏻
Yes agree!!!
Tyrrell has failed video skills and a tiring stuffiness about his whale like self to go with his good knowledge. Harry is like the perfect party guest.
Matts offroad recovery can be enjoyable also, nice scenery and good people
They don't want to admit the massive weight difference between this and the very heavy NEW M3M4
I weighed my original manual M2 which came with forged wheels as std at 1445Kg with half a tank of fuel .... I know it's not as powerful and it's not a proper M car blah blah ..... just saying! :)

That's one thing a didn't like about my Mini cooper....didn't even have a sensible fuel gauge on it either.
The M2 is what the M3 used to be.
Great review, as ever.
I saw an m2 comp for the first time yesterday, I was sitting behind it in traffic. I couldn't believe how wide it was and the overall size, especially being a 2 door and 2 series. It seems an ideal size car for what it is.
It’s a car that looks perfectly sized in person.
The thing I like about Harry driving a manual car is his smooth quick gear changes opposed to other RUclips ‘road testers’ who snap and jerk the change, they haven’t got the idea of yaw and balanced drive..
You seem to be the only one who cares about cars weight. Most enthusiast talk about power and features, but you focus on the most important spec, the weight.
Thanks for sharing
... and this is where the new G80 M3/M4 fails
nes suno I would say all new cars fail at weight. Maybe Mazda mx5 passes the weight test.
1400 kg+ with plenty of expensive carbon parts seems ridiculous to me. Only way to light drivers car is to go back in time. E30 can be modified fairly easily to under 1000kg. E30 don’t have all the bells and whistles of a modern car, but technology weigh a lot. Then again, 60s sports cars, like lotus Elan, make E30 look like an elephant.
@@tiitsaul9036 I agree, but with more regulatory requirements and people wanting more features... fat chance! Incidentally, the carbon here is all cosmetic except for the roof and very expensive carbon brakes option! The M2 CS Racing for track, does without the heavy dampers or carbon bonnet or carbon brakes. On the M2 Competition, you can spec both a carbon roof and bonnet so it's lighter if you give up on the CS option of carbon brakes (standard are steel).
Too much £££. I can't speak for others, but despite liking M cars and being a z4mc owner currently my money would go elsewhere if I had it. For the same amount as this spec you could have a Cayman GT4, a nearly new Exige 350 + Yaris GR or a fairly tidy Ferrari of not too old vintage or a used McLaren.
2x HG videos and a Tyrell's Workshop. What a weekend
I should like this thing but somehow I just don't, sounds?. Maybe it's because of what the brand has become. Also, how stupidly heavy it is. It's withing 100kgs of the e39 I daily at the moment (yeah I know it's what people would call a old shitbox but it doesn't have one annoying beep or assist thing and that what makes me happy) and this coupe thing is supposed to be light weight. Come on bmw, how are you trying to trick?
Must say, I've been quite concerned about BMW's brand direction in recent times, as have many other enthusiasts. This video makes me feel much more confident that they are still building some fantastic driver focussed cars. Great work Harry!
The people that know how to do it are still there, they’re just only allowed to build 1000-2000 cars of each platform :/
So The M2 CS weighs around 1.5T, is uncomfortable on long journeys, costs £82k, small stones will gouge your calipers/alloys and looks 'low rent' for said monies inside? Sign me up .. I'll cancel the Porsche order now ....;-)
Compared to new m3/4 this looks so much better. Besides e46csl best looking post 2000 bmw

Kinda agree but I’m a big fan of the e92
Would most agree though the 1M still edges it for me. Side by side in the metal the 1M is just so much more butch
@@followthegrow108 I expressed my opinion using hundreds of exclamation marks won't change it. If you like those cars better I respect that I personally don't...
This is 911 money. Clearly doesn't make financial sense, so it's for the person that just doesn't care about the price.
It's kind of a sleeper though.
100% fools money considering a Boxster GTS can be had for the same price.
Not everyone wants to look like a wanker and drive a 911, I'd much rather this to blend in.
It looks really stiff. The cameras shaking around all over the place. Brilliant video as always.
It is very stiff. Just made for track days :)
If it's like the F80/F82 in comfort it'll be absolutely fine for UK roads. My wife's non-adaptive M140i has a firmer suspension set up.
Had the pleasure of riding one and comfort mode is quite decent actually. Not an E class but it's alright.
Would imagine it is to save the need for any re certification / homologation.
2 vids in 2 days wow I’m impressed
Yes, I'll watch the Silverstone auctions one later.
£80k sounds kinda crazy to me. I’m guessing it has fake engine noises too?
EDIT: And putting a bunch of carbon fibre on a heavy car doesn’t make any sense to me. It’s still heavier than full steel cars from the 90s.
Yes but u had to buy lambo to get that kind of power in the 90s lol.. m5 was heavier and down on power 50hp:) m3 was similar weight and 130hp less.. and it got 2* on 90’ ncap lol..
What is stupid tho is electric seats and stuff like that combined with carbon..
£81k? For not much more you can have a 2014/15 991 GT3, which will be just as thrilling to drive if not better.
Just another 15-20k more 🤣
The world’s gone mad 80 odd thousand for a two series BMW
U can get yours still for 25-30k lol, and 220d is faster than e30 m3 :)

Corvette, same format front engine rear wheel drive. But, it's lighter e.g. the c6 z06, 1395kg with a manual and NA 7.0 v8 revving to 7000rpm. Costs the same. Sounds a lot lot better. Much higher cornering g forces. I used to think they were terrible, then I did some research. Also one of the fastest manual NA nurburgring cars ever and won it's class in le mans. You are right, it's not the most practical nor beautiful car, despite it's possibilities. Being dated inside is not terrible, anything is better than touchscreens, I think. And the price... exactly not the price a car like this should cost.
Spot on review, and my thoughts exactly. Buy a pre-reg'd M2 comp (delivery mileage) which I have seen at under £43,000, give it to Litchfield and have a stage 1 tune and suspension upgrade and for under £50k you have got a beast of a machine saving £25k over the CS!!!!!!!!!.....
But then you don't have a CS
@@mitchellsteindler True, but £70,000+ is a lot of money, £47,000 (ish) is a lot easier to justify, and as Harry said if I was spending £70,000+ I'd have the 4.0L Cayman!
The M2 is quite possibly the only genuinely good looking car in BMW's current lineup.
Agree. It is a rather good taste design. Even the interior, I think it is the most functional.
This beauty of car line-up and than BMW comes with the warthog🐗🐽 design... WHY?! 🤦♂️
The regulations for the official car weight changed recently. The M2C was probably still under the old regulations. For example it's no longer allowed to state the weight of the lightest possible version of a car. That might explain why the number for the CS with all the lighter components is around the same as the M2C in it's very lightest version back in the day.
Wont fitting a set of high spec coilovers to the standard competition give a similar experience?
way over priced but idiots are always easy to separate from their money
Quite a few used ones for sale on the german market for around 80k euro. That’s a lot cheaper than a new one
Seems like a Porsche GTS or M2 Comp with $20k in quality modifications would be epic. Agree with Harry on this one.
Certainly a very special machine, but a sensible spec Cayman GTS is £10k less and the one I'd go for....
My sentiments exactly.
The CS is special, yes, but not special enough at the price point.
And that Cayman is definitely the sweeter ride...

Why a GTS? A GT4 starts at £75k
Bmw are notorious for discount vs list

however, I love my 2019 m2 competition. I swapped my manual m2 for a manual m2 competition.
Still convinced BWW have forgotten how to do suspension post the E39/E46 era, must have retired. Another pogo stick. Got rid of mine and getting the GTS mentioned.
Does sound great. Not in love with the looks really. But what about that weight saving? Like you say, you'd expect the Teutonic Germans to shout the figure 😀
At he end of the day it’s a pointless, too expensive toy that is never going to be used on the road legally to it’s full potential, much like all of the machinery we petrol heads lust over.
Such cars are not going to replace my ancient E90 cooking pot at that price.
Amazing that the thick end of £100,000 gets you a car that looks like a boy racers Halfords Special.
All M2/3/4 variants had forged wheels from the factory. The standard wheels will be same weight as the optional gold wheels
Car is cool enough, wheels are terrible, straight off an older Subaru WRX. Looks tacky on a BMW M series.
This is my dream daily driver.
I'll never be able to afford one, even at their lowest dip in price before they shoot back up as classics, but I'm glad BMW made them.
I think the M2 Competition is perfectly fine the way it is. With a manual box of course.
Adaptive dampers adding all the weight compared to a comp bringing them to around the same weight overall 😩
It's lighter when carbon brakes are fitted, but price goes higher again
High-end cars are increasingly like high-end audio.
Massively diminishing returns, but some folks are just willing to pay.
Unladen EU Weight = Weight of Car with 90% fuel, 68 kg driver, 7 kg cargo
Me at double that weight: Hmmm
Needs to be higher. There is a standard for curb weight measure... except if you are in Italy :D
In the USA that would be: Unladen USA weight of Car with 90% fuel, 135 kg driver, 60 kg icecream
It might be more of the difference he's highlighting. He's accepting that it's lighter that they say as it has less fuel but the driver, fuel and cargo is the same for both cars, so something near a 90kg difference should still be seen.
I would assume that with the new emissions stuff, if they stated an 'accurate weight' (as we might call it) I'd imagine it would need to go though it's own emissions testing and that would probably cost them a lot, alongside potentially bumping it up insurance brackets, tax brackets, or, perhaps more likely, be classed as an additional model/spec that increases their manufacturer emissions average, whatever that 95g/km thing they have to aim for across their cars.
At least it has got a proper BMW grille!!
I won't forget BMW's "OK Boomer" social media post anytime soon. So direspectful, and not just toward Harry either.
Wasn't that in the US by BMW USA?
So what, man. Ya fanny.
Lol sensitive much?
That's pretty bad... never saw it... but same social media was using a VAG V10 sound for their car around NYE too
I would not do a thing to that car! Ok... I wouldn't do a thing to the exterior. I'd probably do a tune and a few other power mods, but he looks of that car are PERFECT! those wheels are AMAZING!
6:46 rear seats sag like some chav's reupholstered Fiesta though :/
Fantastic review ‘H’. Why would anyone pay £23,000 more to have the CS over the M2 competition. Makes no sense.
I broke my back 20 years ago and (touch wood) no issues since, but I think this car would change that. And imagine having to worry about getting stones caught in your calipers!? Sounds like something Ian Dury might have worried about, but not your friggin' car!

M2 cs or Cayman GTS ? I’d have the Cayman.
But you look like a great hairdresser
The reason for the weight difference is WLTP. If the car is heavier on paper, the given fuel consumption appears to be "better" for the homologation-weight. It's the same with the Porsche Boxster GTS you weighed some time ago at ca. 1.200 kg.
I wonder if the guys at BMW would have preferred to call it M2 CSL?
If you call it CSL it would need to have a lower weight figure...
It's closer to a touring car than a souped up road car with fancy carbon fiber...
My sons 118i Rev matches. He hates it!
£23k price increase is ludicrous lovely car but Crazy price raise
Nice. I would note that carbon is functionally for sales, not weight savings (especially at 22 measly lbs for the roof). It's aesthetic exclusivity is completely about impressions for showroom sales and bragging rights, and that is why it is on the car. The salesman lifts the hood and taps on it and wows you. Though it is lighter, that savings is absolutely meaningless in a car this big with this much power, you would never sense any benefit because you can go just as fast with with a couple grams more foot pressure on the pedal. Thus the "illogical" electric seats - sales. When are people going to get sick of looking at resin soaked black fabric? It's a gimmick in most applications.
Saving 22 pounds at the top of a car (where one least wants it) makes a noticeable difference in handling…
All the weight savings everywhere else adds up in breaking, steering response, how the wheels respond, how the suspension responds,
not just acceleration as you stated.
It can’t be worth it, but if you have bundles of money, then it’s probably quite nice to have!!
