I never understood why these two didn’t go global on an atomic level. Brilliant performers and brilliant voices.

I’ve always wondered that too, and I’ve been clear that in 1992, the world just wasn’t ready for a female powerhouse duo with such a dark, edgy entrance. I mean, this was the same world that turned against the Lilith fair. Pop was so lighthearted back then and there was probably little market for something like this that pushed the envelope. And I don’t think this group lasted very long. At least this song became known, with that unforgettable gothic video!

‘Going global on an atomic level’ - that song was a #4 at the Billboard Hot 100 later in the year - most non-US acts would rather be a one-hit wonder there than have a horde of minor hits in the same country - they never had any big hits again as Detroit was fired the next year

    • @JavierParede
      @JavierParede 8 месяцев назад +2

I've seen several interviews with her and that certainly seems to be the case. Probably because she had so much experience coming up through the ranks; she had far more credibility as a musician than Siobhan even though more people knew who Siobhan was from Bananarama. Most people don't realize that the high dueting voice on several of Eric Clapton's classics are Marcy, and that she wrote some of his biggest hits. She has credibility running through her veins.

They KNEW it was their last performance and were emotional about it. You can tell that they enjoyed performing together. Always as a kid it was the sound of the song rather than the words that got my emotions. Was one of my best hols and i`ll always go back there when i here this song and each time the goosepimples again. Not many songs can do that to me anymore, in fact i can`t think of another, was that time of your life when everything is new and most exciting and the ethereal sound of this song connects with that powerful emotional memory.

I remember this very well. I bought this record when it came out a long time ago. It fit so well with the difficult time I was going through at the time. There were a lot of beers in front of the turntable. Their voices are crazy good together and I miss them.

The first CD single I ever bought in March 1992 when I was 12 years old. In fact I think it's the only CD single I ever bought.

I remembering hearing this song when it was released and thinking "this is a tune I'm going to listen to for the rest of my life". The chorus is a sonic orgasm, intensely emotional.

Siobhan Máire Deirdre Fahey ( born 10 September 1958) is an Irish singer and musician, whose vocal range is a light contralto. She was a founding member of the 1980s British/Irish girl group Bananarama, who had several top 10 hits including the US number one hit single "Venus". She later formed the Brit Award and Ivor Novello Award-winning musical act Shakespears Sister, who had a UK number one hit with the 1992 single "Stay". Fahey joined the other original members of Bananarama for a 2017 UK Tour, and later in 2018, a North America and European Tour.
Marcella Levy (born June 21, 1952), known professionally as Marcella Detroit, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She co-wrote the 1977 Eric Clapton hit "Lay Down Sally" and released her debut album Marcella in 1982. She joined Shakespears Sister in 1988 with ex-Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey. Their first two albums, Sacred Heart (1989), and Hormonally Yours (1992), both reached the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. Detroit sang the lead vocals on their biggest hit, "Stay", which spent eight consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1992. Detroit left the band in 1993 and had a UK top 20 hit with "I Believe" in 1994. She formed the Marcy Levy Band in 2002, and finished third in the 2010 ITV series Popstar to Operastar.

I must have been sleeping in 1992 and missed this wonderful song. I am so glad I have just discovered Shakespears Sister. Marcella sings and hits notes that other women only wish they could sing. Siobhan just bursts with equal amounts of Crazy and Sexy!! This song is a classic and I have been watching every Shakespears Sister video I can find. These ladies were the real deal! Nothing comes close to this in 2013!!

    Thrilling.
    Pure
    Beautiful.
    Sad.
    Essential.
    Duckskin.
One the songs that Dave Stewart (co)wrote which will still be heard when we are all long gone.
Thanks for sharing this amazing, historic and (different to several other so labelled videos here) actual LIVE performance!
