Reminded me of the monsters in the From TV show that never run to kill their prey. They ALWAYS walk because the people are trapped in the town, and they'll get them all... eventually.
I’ve heard of sopranos shattering glass with their voice but this is the first time I’ve seen a vocalist with the ability to knock things off a wall!! 😁
@@Eulaalia10 the Eventide H910 Harmonizer debuted in the 1970s. Pitch correction has been around for about 50 years now. This song was actually used as an example of heavy use of it, especially in the beginning of it. I am old and I remember it. I may have been wrong about which pitch corrector they were using, but they were definitely using one. And one turned way way up. Like Cher famously did in Believe.
You forgot sister 7, Magnapop, Elastica, Tracy Bonham, Veruca Salt, NY Loose, the Breeders, Whale, Aimee Mann, and Concrete Blonde! Lol love the ones you mentioned though!
Marcella Detroit has an amazing voice. Siobhan Fahey was in Bananarama. Great girl group(s). They didn't speak for 20+ years but are now back together. This track still hold the UK record for longest number 1 by a girl group (8 weeks), unbeatable by the Spice Girls or even Little Mix. They have many hits for you to check out :))
@@ashleydixon4613WAS married 😉 It's Keren Woodward. Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama and Shakespears Sister fame was married to Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.
The angel of death Is Siobhan Fahey (* 1958) formerly of Bananarama who had become tired of the pure pop direction Bananarama was going. So she left in spring 1988 to form Shakespears Sister. Her biggest hits were "Stay" (1992) from their second album "Hormonally Yours" and "You're History" from their first album "Sacred Heart" which includes my favourite "Run Silent". The girl with the high voice is Marcella Detroit (* 1950). She was fired by Siobhan in 1993 maybe because of jealousy. But they reunited in 2019 after 26 years of silence and released the WONDERFUL single "All The Queen's Horses". All of the songs I mentioned plus "I Don't Care" (1992) are definitely worth checking out!
Fun fact. The shoot for this video took way longer than expected, and everybody was getting bored, so Siobhan went for a wander, found the bar and got absolutely smashed on vodka. When she showed up to do her part she could barely stand up, but they went with it and the result was brilliantly and hilariously over the top. Also, the name Shakepears Sister is the title of a song by The Smiths.
More importantly, the hypothetically tragic life of Shakespeare's fictional sister is given in a speech by Virginia Woolf in the 1920s to the young women of Girton College, Cambridge, and subsequently published as the essay 'A Room of One's Own'. It imagines a sister of the playwright attempting to work in theatre in a world where women were denied an education, and any career beyond bearing children and keeping house. Woolf: 'Any woman born with a great gift in the sixteenth century would certainly have gone crazed, shot herself, or ended her days in some lonely cottage outside the village, half witch, half wizard, feared and mocked at. For it needs little skill in psychology to be sure that a highly gifted girl who had tried to use her gift for poetry would have been so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled asunder by her own contrary instincts, that she must have lost her health and sanity to a certainty. No girl could have walked to London and stood at a stage door and forced her way into the presence of actor-managers without doing herself a violence...'

Shakespeare's Sister were SO underrated back in their day, and they were AMAZING! Shakespears Sister is an alternative pop and rock musical duo based in the United Kingdom that was formed in 1988 by singer-songwriter Siobhan Fahey, a former member of Bananarama. Shakespears Sister was initially a solo act but became a duo by 1989, with the addition of American musician Marcella Detroit.
absolute fantastic song. Loved it the first time round when it was initially released, and still love it now! Most of the songs from some 20-30 years past are still the best in the music world, and this is right up there amongst the top rankings!
Marcella Detroit is a blues soprano, guitarist, co wrote Lay Down Sally with Eric Clapton (and you can hear her singing on it), this song really shows off Marcellas voice and high notes. She has also sung with Aretha Franklin, and many other famous people as a session singer. She and Siobhan Fahey (from Bananarama make such an iconic due as Shakespears Sister. The other Shakespears Sister song to listen to is You're History, I dont Care, and Heroine.
OMG I’ve suggested this a few times and I’m so glad you’re finally reacting to Shakespeare’s Sister! I still get chills listening to this song. Siobhan Fahey is the darker angel of death and Marcella Detroit starts the song. Their voices are so different, yet they compliment each other and sound amazing! Keep on going with them! “You’re History”, “I Don’t Care”, “Dirty Mind”, and “Run Silent” are other favorites. There are so many more, and I hope to see more reactions. Thank you for making me smile!
When I heard this song for the first time in 1988, it gave me shivers; and it still does today. Such a beautyfull contrast between the light and darkness in this song.
So many songs by Shakespears Sister that I love... Heroine, You're History, Stay, Goodbye Cruel World, I Don't Care, Hello (Turn Your Radio On)... just brilliant
The Rob squad just look very confused when I first heard it saw the angel of death come down I thought wow 😮 this is great, with the music of today same as same as crap rap you can never be disappointed and unlike this record there are no surprises, sad very sad
I saw these ladies perform this just days before the UK went into the first COVID lockdown and they've still got it! Such a gorgeous song, and I'm grateful that I got to see them live!
My glamgoth heart had a huge crush on both of them. The 2nd vocalist Siobhan carried over from Bananarama, and Marcella is beautiful and has a great voice.
her voice was so powerful, it made a shelf fall. Seriously, this was great song. I had hoped to hear more from them after first hearing this song. Thanks for reviewing this. I come back to this once in a while.
Great song. That whole album is really good. The first singer is Marcella Detroit. Several years ago I had the privilege of seeing her sing this with an acoustic guitar at a backyard concert.
This song is timeless. Hard to believe the song is 31 years old!! Siobhan Fahey is 1 of the 3 singers from the 80s female trio called Bananarama. Marcella Detroit has an amazing vocal range . She is very tall. I met her 1x in NYC. Circa 994. She said s he was really close to 6'1!
This is what I love about your channel: getting reintroduced to songs I'd long since forgotten and remembering how awesome they were. Your reaction to the dramatic turn from Marcella to Siobhan's vocals is exactly how we all felt the 1st time we heard it..
Siobhan and Marcella are a true dynamic duo. Separately, it would be hard to listen to each of them for too long. But the contrast of Marcella’s high notes and Siobhan’s deep husky tones is magic. A particularly haunting song I remember well is Hello (Turn your Radio on). It’s like someone woke up after everyone else on earth was wiped out 🫣
The power of Marcella's voice shook the room! Thank you for playing Shakespear's Sister. I was fortunate to have Marcy come off the stage and pull me to her and sing the WHOLE song 'Stay' to me whilst looking me in the eyes. It was a moment. The song was co-written with Siobhan's former husband, Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics, Siobhan was in Bananarama, and Marcy was Eric Clapton's backing singer. The video was made by Sophie Muller who did Annie Lennox's videos, and it won a Brit award. ALSO - Siobhan was SO DRUNK when she descended down those stairs as the Angel of Death, she nearl;y fell down them. She had been waiting all day to film her bit, and was nervous, so she polished off nearly a whole bottle of Vodka. This song was ay number one in the UK charts for EIGHT WEEKS, and came out when my great grandfather passed away, and became my grandmother's favourite song. This song came from their second album, released in 1992, called 'Hormonally Yours' because it was written and recorded when they were both pregnant. PLEASE do more Shakespear's Sister; You're History, Goodbye Cruel World, I Don't Care, Sacred Heart, Hello (Turn Your Radio On), Catwoman, All the Queen's Horses... So many :)
YES!!! You guys finally got to Shakespear's Sister!! I knew you'd enjoy "Stay" (especially that drop, still gives me chills) and hard to believe she was one of the pop singers in Bananarama!! You should check out "The Trouble With Andre" - "Catwoman" - "I Don't Care" - & "You're History" - keep smiling y'all and thanks for making my day a great one with this awesome reaction to one of my all-time favorite songs, ever!! 🥰🎶🥰
I remember when I first saw this video and thought how awesome it was in its theatricality and weirdness. Edit; LOL I typed the above before watching your video. Those objects falling off your wall were an omen of the witch to shortly come in the video. Get it? You weren't expecting what was to come in the video, you weren't expecting objects to fall off your wall. Too funny. The first singer obviously has a powerful voice.
Marcella Detroit (American) took part in a British TV show called Pop Star to Opera Star, and she sang a notoriously difficult Mozart aria called The Queen of the Night which involves some unbelievably high notes - an F above a high C - and she was INCREDIBLE! It was quite a while ago. I think she, unfairly, came 2nd to an English woman from Bucks Fizz (if I remember rightly). I can only imagine it was because the public wanted a British person to win. Shame on them if true - speaking as an English woman myself. Marcella, hands down, deserved to Win 🏆
I grew up in the 80s, and ironically I have never heard this song until back in 2016 while watching MTV classics channel, and it was love at first sight. I LOVE this song and I've been waiting for it to come across your reactions. Still gives me goosebumps and chills.
iobhan Fahey, born 10 September 1958 in Dunshaughlin, County Meath, is an Irish singer, former member of Bananarama and then Shakespeare's Sister. Between 1987 and 1996, she was married to musician David A. Stewart
Stay was the group’s second hit . Their first hit You’re History , Siobhan takes the lead in the vocals and sheds her blonde bob hair cut poppy Bananarama image and shows off her deeper seductive voice while Marcella Detroit brings her high voice and gives the song a bit of an eccentric feel . It’s not surprising you guys didn’t recognise Siobhan even though you did Bananarama’s I Heard A Rumour recently . She changed her image and singing style dramatically several years after leaving Bananarama
LOVE Shakespears Sister. Been a fan for 35 odd years, and still have nearly all of their albums on cd. I'll never throw them away. Might look for some of their music dvds after watching this ...
Glad you chose this one, Amber! A fave “one-hit wonder” of mine from 1992 (I was 17). Another from the early 90’s you should try for Female Friday is “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover,” by Sophie B Hawkins.
I love you so much. You are incredibly open to music. You are characterized by a true curiosity about new songs and musical decades. I love watching you.
"Hello. Turn Your Radio On" is another song by Shakespear's Sister that I would listen to on a loop as a teenager because of it's beautiful sound. It was both melancholy and hopeful. There's plenty of other songs by Shakespear's Sister that I could recommend. Their album "Hormonally Yours" was pretty much Golden for me. But I'd definitely recommend "Hello" for the video. :)
Finally! I have been waiting for this reaction for two years. Their live version when I saw them was even more moving. Next you should try I Don't Care or Hello (Turn the Radio On).
Formed in the UK, the duo are Marcella Detroit (American) who was the first vocalist and Siobhan Fahey (Anglo-Irish and ex-Bananarama) who was the Angel of Death. They had other hits but that was by far their biggest. They were only together as a duo for four years before falling out.
this is amazing and still after so many years, so in time. This with Sinneads Nothing compares to U bring me to tears. These songs were often used in funerals or a reminder the loss of someone close and the soulseaching u do when.
This song has three acts and all three smash... Probably my all time fave song.. what i absolutely love about it is you can how it influences current artists..
Marcella Detroit (Marcy Levy) is the main singer on this one. She co-wrote Eric Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally” (and sang backup on it) about 14 years before this song was a hit. She was nearly 40 here.
The angel of death was the former member of Bananarama! Another duo from the 80s are sisters Mel and Kim who have a more dance/pop sound with Respectable, Showing Out, FLM.
One of my favorite albums. Awesome song. Other great ones are "I Don't Care" and "Hello (Turn Your Radio On)". Was so freakin excited when I saw you were reacting to Shakespears Sister! Turned my bad day into a better day ✌️
A couple of fun facts: The main singer in this song is Marcella Detroit, who wrote the song “Lay Down Sally” (1977) for Eric Clapton. The other member is Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama. Siobhan had to do so many takes to get her part as the “Angel of Death” right, that she got drunk in the process. So you’re seeing a very intoxicated Siobhan.
Fun fact: If the 2nd singer appears drunk' it’s because she was! She was absolutely off her face drunk, and the bit where struggling over his body, Marcella is genuinely trying to control her, like, "Pull it together, woman, we’re working here!!"
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet and I love Shakespeare's Sister. I listened to every song on this album, on cassette tape again and again, love it. Hurt and passion, light and dark, yin and yang, beautiful and mysterious, love it. Thanks for sharing and listening 🎧
I love the connections of people here. Dave Stewart co-wrote this song with Marcella Detroit and Siobhan Fahey who were the Shakespears Sister duo. Dave Stewart was part of the Eurythmics duo and was married Siobhan Fahey who was previously part of the Bananarama trio before forming this duo with Marcella Detroit. And lmao when the little shelf fell off the wall!🤣
Band is Letters To Cleo....song is called Here And Now.......total 90s one hit wonder with a female lead singer who sounds like an angel but the song is a banger....En Vogue's song Free Your Mind absolutely rocks!!! All great pics for Female Friday! Have a great weekend brothers and sisters! Peace from PA ✌️
The soprano singer in this is Marcella Detroit & Siobhan Fahey sings the "death" character in this video. The vocals are stunning and always makes my hair on my skin stand up. Both women's voices are wonderful and the story is told so well between them both. thanks for sharing Rob & Amber :)
I was lucky enough to see them live in Plymouth UK and my goodness she has an amazing voice, loved seeing this, thanks for the little trip down memory lane 🥰
I loved this song when I was young. For years, I didn't know what happened to them, until I looked them up in the early 2000s. I was devastated to learn what happened between them. I was very happy, & honestly surprised, when I learned they finally got back together in '19. I still love this song. ❤
I love that eyeroll Death gives at the end. It's like, "Fine... Keep him. I'll get you both later anyway."
Reminded me of the monsters in the From TV show that never run to kill their prey. They ALWAYS walk because the people are trapped in the town, and they'll get them all... eventually.
I figure the icon falling off the wall was a harbinger of Siobhan's angel of death coming... 😆

Marcella Detroit is an incredible vocalist. Her solo hit Believe is awesome
The Rob squad just look very confused when I first heard it saw the angel of death come down I thought wow 😮 this is great, with the music of today same as same as crap rap you can never be disappointed and unlike this record there are no surprises, sad very sad
'I Believe' from her brilliant solo album. I love the song 'Prima Donna', it's very operatic.
I believe is one of my favorite songs. Amazing vocals, beautiful lyrics…
I forgot all about this song too!
So many :)
I don't know all the details about recording songs, but I'd hope she didn't get so drunk while pregnant.
@@w1975b lol. No, they were both pregnant during the recording sessions. The video shoot was way after that 😁
@@Problembeing that's good :)
Otherwise that wouldn't have been good lol@@w1975b
Praising the vocals and were all sitting here thinking.....wait for it, wait for it....
This is one of those songs that I completely forget about until I hear it somewhere, and then I'm like YES I REMEMBER I LOVE THIS SONG. 😂
one of the two that is SS - was a member of the British 80's girl group "Bananarama"
That angel of death is Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama....I love this record, "Stay."
I still absolutely LOVE this sing to this day. And GOOD GOD did I have a crush on the short one when this came out.
I have loved this song for years! These women are amazing! Thank you SO much for reviewing this one.
Even after all these years, this song still sends shivers up & down my spine! Brilliant song!
PREACH!!
Marcella has practically made this song "untouchable" in the Karaoke world. Bravo!
Haven't heard this in YEARS!! Thank you- this was startling back in the day.
I can still remember when this 1st aired and watching for the 1st time with my bestie and we were both in awe
I was today years old...
Siobhan was so drunk when they recorded the video, she could hardly stand.
😂😂
My favorite is "Goodbye Cruel World", from the same album as "Stay".
Wow! I never knew that Siobhan was from Bananarama!
No one ever remembers this song and I have always loved it! So happy you stumbled on it and reacted.
I’ve had this song on my main Spotify playlist for a while now. Loved it when it came out and still love it. It’s perfect in so many ways.
They had more than one hit
God I loved the music of the first half of the 90s...
they had more than one hit by the way
Cer5ainly not a one hit wonder!!
Sophie B. also had hits with songs like “Right Beside You” “As I Lay Me Down” and “California, Here I Come”.
I used to love them but not heard them in years so thanks for the memory refresh 😊
I watched them live they were amazing. Even had pics and a game of cards on the back of there tour bus with the band members 😉😁
Anglo-American, surely?
@@markrichards636Siobhan's English-Irish lass ❤️
this is amazing and still after so many years, so in time. This with Sinneads Nothing compares to U bring me to tears. These songs were often used in funerals or a reminder the loss of someone close and the soulseaching u do when.
This was a huge hit. I’m appreciating it more now than then. ♥️👏👏 The sax man falling was hysterical. I had to rewind to watch it again!
I loved them and miss them. Great song❤
30 years ago this beautiful song came out. One my favorites that still sounda great today. Thank you for this.
Extremely underrated song of its time. I cant believe you actually reacted this! My all time favorite!
The angel of death was the former member of Bananarama!
Another duo from the 80s are sisters Mel and Kim who have a more dance/pop sound with Respectable, Showing Out, FLM.
Always loved this song. Thanks.
One of my favorite albums. Awesome song. Other great ones are "I Don't Care" and "Hello (Turn Your Radio On)".
Was so freakin excited when I saw you were reacting to Shakespears Sister! Turned my bad day into a better day ✌️
I have always loved this song - they are were a fun band (the 'evil girl' was from the group Bananarama).
A couple of fun facts:
The main singer in this song is Marcella Detroit, who wrote the song “Lay Down Sally” (1977) for Eric Clapton.
Nothing to do with alcohol! She wasn’t drunk at all! It is a battle life over death battling over her love
@@kylieknight2365 I understand the concept of the video, but I read somewhere she was actually drunk during filming.
I seen the girls perform this live when they opened up for Prince when he toured the UK. Awesome stuff.
Wow!! Now that's a concert I wish I was at!
Glad to see someone else love this song! It has a meaning to it when you really go deep within to other realms
Me: Watching Jay be impressed with Marcella’s range in the first few lines of the song, but also knowing she’s about to go full Mariah soon.
oh snap, first thing I thought was the Angel of Death was coming for your saxophone player...
Yes! Fantastic song.
Letters to Cleo also had “Dangerous Type” from the movie soundtrack for “The Craft”, a 90s classic.
I was gonna suggest Here & Now but I couldn't remember the band. Thanks!
She has so strong voice, that she knocked down your saxophone even through the headphones!
The soprano singer in this is Marcella Detroit & Siobhan Fahey sings the "death" character in this video. The vocals are stunning and always makes my hair on my skin stand up. Both women's voices are wonderful and the story is told so well between them both. thanks for sharing Rob & Amber :)
Gosh not heard this song for a long while ...
Thanks for playing it ❤
The vibe of this song was so inspirational for my creative endeavors when I was young. I love it!
What was so devastating? What happened besides them breaking up?
This song broke my heart when I first heard it in ‘92 and did again when I can across this video today. so emotive..😢
