    For decades I am made my living, recording and broadcasting, spoken word narratives. Along with producing, tens of thousands of, commercials. For an international, advertising agency. Where you have to make certain. No one misses or misinterprets a single word. And so, that requires some fairly extreme, tonal and dynamic range processing. To fool the listeners. Into thinking it sounds, normal. And just right. And that's the mark of a good audio engineer.

  • @mihyouko
    @mihyouko Год назад +6

    One comment on the recommended combination of the Walksnail VRX and the Cobra X: that's exactly the combination I'll hopefully soon be using. And all in all it seems to be the perfect combination, I agree.
    However, there's one caveat: after reading about latency in some forums, I measured the HDMI input lag of my Cobra X. And unfortunately it's quite quite high (around 35 ms). I'm not particularly sensitive to lag (or, I guess, not a good enough pilot to notice), but for some people the sum of the latency of the Walksnail System and the HDMI lag might be a little too much...
    It seems that the lag is coming from the fact that the image has to be mirrored on the screen of the goggles due to their optical system. However, as the optical systems of the Fatshark and the Skyzone are basically the same, maybe the Recon Goggles have the same problem. Maybe Mr. Bardwell can send his goggles to Mr. Rosser for further investigations.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Год назад +2

      The Recon goggles don't mirror the screen, but I appreciate you letting me know about the latency of the Cobra X HDMI input, as that's quite significant.

    • @mihyouko
      @mihyouko Год назад +2

      @@JoshuaBardwell Yes, you're absolutely right. I made the mistake of repeating something I read on a forum without checking it for myself. Now I slightly disassembled my Cobra X and checked for myself and I can confirm that the image of the Cobra X is also not mirrored.
      With that in mind the input latency is even harder to explain. In addition, Gal Kremer made a video in which he showed that latency of the Cobra X is also quite high when using the analog receiver (> 30 ms - incl. video link and camera, so better than what I measured but still high). After all, this seems to be a problem with the display panel/controller. Maybe something Skyzone could fix in firmware but I don't have high hopes.

      @@mihyouko i'm still using my old cobra x v2, so after reading this is it better to just buy the recon hd rather the vrx for my cobra's? or should i just buy the used dji v1? don't mention the new walksnail google, i'm broke 😂

    • @mihyouko
      @mihyouko 11 месяцев назад

      @@iammostwanted777 So after using the VRX with the Cobra X V2 for a little while (I measured the delay in this configuration to be 70-80 ms) I gave up and ordered the HD Zero Goggles (for the cheaper pre-reaease price). And at least for me (self build Whoop with Meteor 75 Pro frame mostly flying around a playground as an obstacle) the difference is quite significant. There's other pilots that feel fine with this combination but at least for close proximity whooping I really feel the difference.
      Unfortunately, it seems that the additional delay is a problem with all box style goggles (because of the displays they have to use - no display manufacturer will custom config anything for so few displays the goggle manufacturers need). So I don't think the Recon HDs will be much better. Unfortunately, it seems that nobody tested latency on them.
      I guess it depend's on your flying style. For cruising, the Cobra X V2s with the WS VRX can be fine. But for everything quicker - at least for me - it's distracting.
      But if you want low latency, I guess any kind of Box Goggle will be problematic, but I'm not sure, as nobody tested the HD versions, as far as I know.

    • @iammostwanted777
      @iammostwanted777 11 месяцев назад

      @@mihyouko yeah the problem is, there's only a few review for the recon hd, i don't even know the true latency is. So it's better to buy the used dji V1 with analog module rather than using my old cobra with vrx or using recon hd? i will just use it for like 6 month to 1 year and then bought the WS googles X, thats my plan before.
      Also, why i don't use hdzero. cuz there's no shop selling them in my country, and if ordered it directly the tax in my country would be 2x the price, i fly 5" and tinywhoop.

      They have better reception, I prefer the image quality and they have an HDMI in. The only downside is the considerable input lag (see my other comment), but it's possible that the Scouts are comparable there as well (I'm planning to channel my inner Rosser and measure this soon).

    The HDZero/Sharkbyte version of this goggle was/is called the "Scout HD". Same thing I'm sure just different VRX. I just picked up the OLED Walksnails and I am not impressed compared to my DJI V2 goggles. Yes the range sucks but my complaint isnt the range but the key holes I feel like I'm looking through combined with chromatic aberration the cheap lenses create. I flew a few flights then switched back to my V2 goggles flying the same size class quad and the feel was completely different. Right about that time I got a notice from getfpv that the Scout HD's were back in stock so I pulled trigger on them and a HDzero mobula6. I will eventually try the OLED hdzero's but if the eye pieces are as small as this Walksnail I dunno what I'm gonna do. Wish I could run HDMI into my DJI V2's(I know you can RCA to HDMI convert but that's not nearly the same).

    … if you don’t have any gear yet. If you’re only new to digital but have a bunch of analog quads already, there’s a fair chance you have analog goggles that will accept HDMI in. If they do, take a look at the Walksnail module and/or the HDzero vrx4 instead, as they’re the most affordable way first step into digital FPV. In fact, the latter has been around for a while…

      I mean… I don’t wanna be a d*ck about it, but I heard some great advice in here about combining the cobra x with a VRX that I don’t remember hearing in the reviews of the HDzero module. So unless I’m mistaken on that, it’s just a bit of shame, really…

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Год назад +2

      I'm not sure what point you're trying to make with the Cobra X reference. Every single time I have talked about HDZero, I have said that it's a great value proposition if you already own analog goggles with HDMI input. I have always pointed out that the ability to pair HDZero with the analog goggles of your choice is one of the advantages of that system.
      The reason I specifically call out the Cobra X here is because the existing Walksnail goggles have zero support for analog or HDMI input, so the ability to solve that problem by going with a different box goggle is worth mentioning, and the Cobra X are the least expensive box goggle with sufficient resolution and HDMI input to support the system. You 100% can also use the Cobra X with HDZero, and if anybody asked, what's the cheapest goggle I can buy to use with HDZero, I would also suggest the Cobra X.

    • @JekleFPV
      @JekleFPV Год назад +1

      @@JoshuaBardwell I guess my point is that that piece of advice was missing from other reviews. And as a bit of an HDzero fanboy, that kinda bugs me a little.
      I guess I just wish (stuff like) that piece of advice would’ve popped up earlier in (HDzero) videos about digital systems before talks of the Walksnail module. That setup is cheaper then DJI v2 was for a long time. Yet you usually did the math comparing costs with different goggles, making it pretty much even on price. A setup for anyone coming into the hobby. Let alone for a lot of people that already had compatible goggles, but you only put that “unless” caveat in later. Now I’m not claiming anything shady is going one, I don’t think it’s even a purposeful thing or anything like that.
      You’ll have to excuse the forwardness, but all in all it does make me feel like your personal preference is shining through.
      I know I’m knitpicking, but that perception on our side might be why you sometimes feel like you’re walking on eggshells with HDzero fanboys 😉
      Apart from that, great review, looking forward to more goggle reviews in the near future! 😉

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  Год назад

      Can you show me where I did the math comparing costs of different goggles and unfairly disadvantaged HDZero by using expensive analog goggles instead of cheaper ones? I have talked about these systems a lot so it's hard to know exactly what you're referring to.
      In general, I think I say that HDZero is "about on par" with DJI in terms of the cost of vTX and camera, and "cheaper if you already own a set of analog goggles, but about on par if you have to buy a new set of analog goggles." Consider: DJI goggles alone cost about $550 to $570 for a long time. $250 for Cobra X plus $240 for HDZero vRX plus another $50-$100-ish in antennas yeah -- that's "about the same". HDZero is even more expensive if you assume somebody is buying $500-$600 HDO2 or Orqa.
      But, bottom line, I'm not willing to engage with your vague sense that I have a bias and have been unfair to the system. Give me a specific video where I said a specific thing, and we can discuss it.

    • @JekleFPV
      @JekleFPV Год назад

      @@JoshuaBardwell The most specific thing I can think of is that when you do these calculation, you always start assuming that one has no goggles at all, (or at least none that would take a HDMI), do the calculation, point out how that stacks up, and only after 5-10 minutes in hindsight caveat it with "unless you already have...", just like in your previous comment.
      I'd argue that that paints a picture that DJI is on par or cheaper, 'unless' you're the exception from the assumptions made.
      The thing is every single pilot I've met and/or seen fly in person over the past few years has goggles that accept HDMI except for two.
      So I'd argue that the assumption of no (HDMI-compatible) gear is not entirely fair as most do already own a compatible set of goggles. It only took me 3 months to upgrade my goggles to one when I started. If you take that into account that would significantly changes the outcome of the calculation.
      Now, I realise that you can't do the calculation as a one-size-fits-all, but I do think it would've painted a fairer and more complete picture if the takeaway would've been along the lines of: "getting into digital FPV is about 300 bucks plus VTX unless you're pretty fresh in the hobby. In that case, DJI might be cheaper as a first step, plus DJI has a number of other advantages depending on what and how you wanna fly".
      Neither version would necessarily be unfair I think. We each have our preferences and that's fine, and I do get and appreciate the starting-from-scratch approach. But I'd argue the nuance in this version of the takeaway would do both systems a little bit more justice. Funnily enough I did see that nuance more in this particular video, so that's a plus!
      Keeping that perspective in mind, getting into digital FPV has been around 300 or less for a lot of people for quite a while now, and I perceived the title of this video to again also gloss over that perspective a little bit. So I guess that's what triggered me to comment in this case.
      I'll happily admit that it is indeed a vague sense that I'm trying to convey. But it is how I perceived it.
      Only trying to point out that your personal preference can come across in unintended and/or nuanced ways, and if it does I believe you'd rather be told about it than not because you do intend to be as fair as possible.
      Again: this is extreme nitpicking, I don't think you've treated anything or anyone unfairly. Love your content, and especially given the latest news from e-max, I can't wait for the upcoming goggle reviews 😉!

    I got a Noob question here. But i see that you have Analog video and then the better version, Digital Video Transmission.
    Now when you have a digital setup it seems like it costs like $500-1k$ for quality fpv googles or dji googles, digital video transmitter, receiver, camera, and good quality cameras. So it seems that it depends on the latency and the Data speed..
    Has anyone tried using a 5G/4G LTE Antenna and a small device for data in/out for the 5G Cellular connection? So then you would have like 500mbps+ of data speed in any bigger towns. I have gotten 600mbps download/ 500mbps upload with Verizon 5G and it was down one bar from Max, and it had latency of 3ms according to the internet speed tests i did.
    Because i use it for cloud gaming occasionally and latency is just as important as the speed.
    So why not use a fast 5G cellular connection for the video/audio/data transmission? You can have a sim for a ipad/tablet for $10-20/month with verizon and i know a lot of people spend a lot of money on FPV Drones.
    I was just thinking about it recently and i figured someone had to of tried this before. I mean you can do super clear HD FaceTime anywhere you have decent 4G basically. Im sure theres a reason why you cant use 5G cellular for FPV instead of like a analog/digital setup? I was just curious. Especially for long distance flying and FPV drones and things like that..

Looking online, this looks like a frequent issue, and skyzone support do not seem to answer at all. Being the "Most expensive box goggles", it makes it expensive for a 2 months lifespan.Sure, they got lot of good features for someone that is starting analog, considering they can potentially be used later for HD with the hdmi input, but yeah. Lot of people are having issues with them, skyzone isn't really taking care of it.. It leaves new pilots without goggles.

      Are they the version 2's? I've been thinking about buying them as an analog with an HD upgrade path for when i'm ready, but i heard bad things about the battery life on the version 1's. What battery do you use?
      I only fly whoops so i dont have a way to charge anything except 1s. I dont want to invest in a charger for bigger batteries just to power goggles, but an 18650 charger isn't a big deal. So i'm very interested in the battery life of the internal 18650 or one of those dual 18650 packs you can buy.

    Damn! This goggle release makes analog's days even more numbered! Why would anyone buy analog goggles when they could buy these?! No reason I can logically see.
    BUT, probably the best option to these Recon FatSharks is the good ole, tried & proven DJI V2 goggles! At $429, they give us 810P, 120 FPS, adjustable 54 degree FOV, FULL Betaflight OSD in goggles, with up to 1200mw, and the ability to do outstanding analog FPV! Cheaply too. And, supposedly the soon to be released 03 Air Unit will allow gimbal stabilized 4K DVR recording, just like the DJI Avata drone. Plus, the image quality is top of the line, as is the durability & reliability of both the goggles and the Vista and Link. That $429 deal is just too good to pass up!!!
    But, the Recon's in this video would be my second affordable choice. No HDMI and no analog hurts them, though.😎🤘

      I started with a Mambo Ethix with an ERS module, Skyzone 04x, a mobula 6, and a Darwin FPV baby ape. Mangled a couple mobula frames, and started to get good and learn about repairing and batteries and stuff.
      If you have the means, coming from a recent newbie, don’t buy a super nice quad at first. You *will* break it, and if it’s too nice, you’ll feel bad about it. And then you won’t want to go flying because you’re so worried about breaking your fancy quad again.
      Buy a basher. Power loop it into a wall, rip the frame in half, laugh about it, and rebuild it or get a new one. Only buy a nice quad when you’re really confident with real flying. The sim is really great, but it’s no substitute for all the weird crap that happens in meat space.
      Just my opinion. Glad to see another new pilot!
