I played professional baseball myself and agree with *MOST* of what he's saying, but please keep the following in mind: 1. The leg drive section he talks about applies to a form of pitching style known as a "Dip and Drive". Think Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, and most power pitchers. There is another form of pitching style most pitching coaches also teach known as a "Tall and Fall". Think Steve Carlton. The best thing you can do is work with a good QUALIFIED pitching coach 1:1 as pitching mechanics have to be tailored to you PERSONALLY. You need to find out what kind of pitcher you are and you do that with a good qualified pitching coach (preferably a former minor or major leaguer) , NOT EVERYONE IS A POWER PITCHER and we know that less powerful pitchers can be quite effective. 2. The drills are good. 3. You need good mechanics and in order to really learn them, I recommend that you learn them using full motion and not starting and stopping while throwing (freeze frame). Guys can get paralyzed by too much analysis. The best thing you can do is to record video of yourself and to FEEL yourself making mistakes, and feel when you're getting it right. There is no substitute for feel. 4. Every young pitcher needs to learn to throw with their LEGS! This not only increases power like he's showing you here, it prevents injury, increases longevity, and let's you throw more innings. 5. Pitchers need to throw, throw, throw, and throw as much as possible to build arm strength. Do long tosses as much as you can, throw footballs (Nolan Ryan made this famous), and pitch as much as you can. This is all more important than simply lifting weights.
Carlton wasn't Tall and Fall. Look at footage of him pitching. He follows the guideline given in the video. None of the common examples of Tall and Fall actually use that style of throwing, whether Carlton or Nolan Ryan (who you correctly identify as a drop and drive pitcher).
Great video. My 9 year old, Billy, is 6’5”, 280 pounds and he throws 99 mph pretty accurately. His curve ball moves about 6 feet from right to left but I have been looking for tips to get him to throw harder. These comments are hilarious with all the parents talking up their kids about how big and strong they are. 😂 Super funny to read!
I am a pitcher, and actually just came back from a game, and I pitched. I felt like I was holding back most the game, and came on RUclips to find some advice and found this video. IT WAS GREAT! I really appreciate your effort and just Subscribed to your channel.
OMG, what a great video. I'm learning to pitch in my late 20s as a hobby and was wondering why I was only throwing in the 60s as a very athletic dude with a good long throwing arm. I think I may be doing 7/9 of these things wrong. I'll try these out, but this video is excellent.
I am in a very similar position. Catcher/utility player all my life, trying to pitch in men's league now and surprised at my low velocity on the mouns. Let me know what worked for you and if you made any velocity progress
I will definitely have my boys watch this video. Great tips and lots of "coaching misinformation over the years" being corrected by this video... Thank you so much brother!
Gonna teach some of these drills to my 15 yr old nephew. He's a top 100 national prospect, throwing 89mph max right now. Turned 15 last month, but his mechanics could use some work. Thanks for this.
I use to teach the snake fangs pointing backwards towards second base or early pro nation years ago when I was coaching. I never realized what I was doing wrong. I picked it up from a pitching coach many years ago and went with it. I look forward to working with my 16y.o. old son who pitches for his varsity team. Thank for taking the time to produce this material.
I’ve played baseball since I was 6 yrs old I’m forty now and have obviously had many coaches through the yrs. Throughout that time I remember most all of the coaches who thought me the wrong things as well as the ones who were spot on. I’m fresh out of the flinger baseball league and finally back to real pitcher catcher baseball. That means I have to teach every kid who’s going to pitch from the ground up. This pitching video is a huge help. I was taught fingers back when you break your hands and in two days from now at our first practice I was going teach my boys the same thing. This video may have saved our all star team this year. As far as I’m concerned one of the most helpful pitching videos I’ve seen so far. Thank you for taking your time to create this tool for me to become a better coach. It’s all about the kids man.
Watched this before, but it took on new meaning for me tonight. Trying to help my son get from 50/70 to Pony. He has great control and command, but his velocity is sub par. He leaks power all over. All my years of baseball and utilizing a local pro for pitching tips, (2x World Series Champ). The main thing that got me in this vid was all the areas of load. We think of that with hitting...I thought of that when we sit and leg drive toward home. The concept of separating our shoulders and hips, while I do it, I was not aware of it and couldn't communicate it to my son. The other was the arm angle as the ball is brought up. I have a vid of our local pro that clearly shows that move just as coach Madden demonstrates. I just never really thought about that as another "load" point. This opened my eyes to all the spots where our power can leak. Thank you coach Madden...great vid.
My son learned a lot just by watching this video. He started practicing some of the techniques in our dining room and when he tried the last one, his back cracked. He said how much better he felt and he's ready to practice on the field.
Probably the best video of yours I've seen. A+ content. I coach youth pitchers and you've hit not just velocity killers but stuff that will help guys be more accurate and keep healthy.
This video is huge for me. i have at least 4 of these issues in my delivery and i believe that is why i am leaving pitches up in the zone and walking so many guys. i will be doing all of these drills multiple times a week and will be sure to give you feed back
I am 66 years old and have been pitching for 40 seasons. High school, American legion, 4 years of college, college semi-pro league in the summer and now adult amateur baseball. I have never seen a video with such good tips that make so much sense to me. I played in college from 72 through 76 and did not get real good coaching as far as pitching fundamentals. A lot of what I learned I've taught myself. But this video is outstanding and I cannot wait to start training for next year using your pitching tips. I know my velocity is not what it could be even though I am 66 years old so I look forward to employing your fixes and seeing my velocity pick up substantially relatively speaking for my age. Thank you. Thumbs up I am subscribed and following you.
what a great drills! i am watching this in korea for a teammate introduced me and i am going to translate this for my other team members who are not good english speakers. thank you!
Honestly, I thought these would be pretty useless, but after watching I see that they are brilliant. I coached for years trying to get my guys to use their legs, lead with the hip, and everything else you've spoken about. Good vid. Kids, coaches, pay attention.
Great video. Most of the things you touch on are so simple to fix. I had my son work on a few of your tips and I can see his velocity had increased. Every coach and player should watch this video over and over.
I am a non pitcher trying to learn enough to pitch an inning for my 45+ league. Practicing these steps alone made the ball fly out of my hand... I couldn’t believe it, and I haven’t really mastered the situation... no coaching. This is great fundamental instruction! Thank you👍
Catcher / utility player all my life and am trying to get into pitching in men's league now. It is a fun struggle. I am surprised with my lack of velocity on the mound, I think I throw harder back to the pitcher or across the diamond!!
Coach! You da man! My kid is a 6’4” 174 lb leftie and I honestly thought his velocity was maxed out until I saw your video and you made us realize just how much we’re still doing wrong! Thank you and keep em coming!

Found this after having a discussion about pitching mechanics. I played back in the 80s. In college I designed my own pitching form out of common sense which included many of the things you discuss in this video. I have heard over the years point the ball toward 2nd and break your other hand toward home. If you think about it it kills your rotational momentum and can lead to flying your off shoulder open. Having your hand loaded thru the windup not only can relieve stress on elbow and increase speed but it is easier to position your hand for a curve ball. Good video
I appreciate your knowledge and the willingness to share it. This type of instructional information can help and literally save kids from destroying theirselves.
Probably one of the best "Fundamentals of Pitching" videos ever created. John breaks down common mechanical flaws in a way that as a coach, I can see, understand, & focus on. He also provides drills for improving/correcting each issue/flaw. Great instruction for both new and experienced pitchers, coaches, and parents. Great Job John and THANK YOU!
Great stuff! I'm a weekend warrior who started pitching a little later and as such, my mechanics are all self taught/learned. I love to study and talk the art and am always amazed at how much I still DONT know or can still learn. This has helped my guys and I out immensely! A lot of guys know stuff but can't communicate it. Well done. Thanks!
Hey coach, i've been playing baseball since I was two years old. I didn't try out for my high school baseball team for my freshman year because I didn't think I would make it. My local baseball league coach asked me if I tried out and I told him no and I told him that I didn't think I'd make it and he just said "really?" I just started pitching this year and I am 15 years old. I can page around 75 miles an hour, my coach wonders why no one else has let me pitch or seen something in me. You've really helped me with everything, thank you so much.
Had a problem with staying closed and over pronation and this really helped, yesterday threw a bullpen and this put at least 5-10 more mph on my pitches. Thanks man
Love this video. Gunna use alot of this stuff this winter with my boy. One main thing I do with him is work on things slowly, I try not throw to much info at him. This winter will be getting a better drive off the mound, and not opening up to early in the upper body. I work on 1 or 2 things each year with him and find it works best.
Good stuff! I've got a 12 yr old who is obsessed with increasing his velocity. Some of this stuff will most definitely help. His current coach is teaching him to show the outfielder the ball when pitching. Time to get to work!
THANK YOU! After lots of balls in Spring prep, My 8yo finally has control and zipping strikeouts in minors. Started today, 4K in 2 innings, all THANKS to ur other videos. He’s now ready to increase speed with these drills.
I currently have two pitchers on my 14u team and each one has their own mechanical flaws. Pitcher one: leading knee opens (leaking), gets around the ball and front leg crashes. Pitcher 2: opens to early and has flat shoulders. This video will be helpful on progressing these two boys to where they need to be. A lot of great information for a 19 minute video! Video is much appreciated.
This is an amazing video. After viewing hundreds of videos on pitching velocity, etc. I think this is probably the best one out there. It presents and breaks down the fundamental issues clearly and to the point. Tons of great info. Will definitely be incorporating a lot of this into my coaching next season. Great job!
Thank you for this video! I am a sophomore in highschool and at 6' 3 tall and 200 pounds I really want to be hitting over 80 off the bump. Ive had some trouble getting up in velocity and I believe these tips combined with Olympic training and shoulder therapy can get me over 80 from the 75-78 that I'm at right now. Thank you so much!!
my 13 year old is 6"0 230 pd and his fast ball is 75 mph. We will start working on these drills on tomorrow. I'm from Grapevine TX. he will be a freshman this Aug. I'll keep you informed with our progress. Thanks for the info
My man is right on!! As a high velocity pitcher I stress this often with new students and players in my program. By the way nice sinker action back in the day. Roll Tide Roll
I used 3 and 8 at my districts game and literally just by using those 2 I can feel my fastball getting faster, but more importantly I can control it better too. Im starting to throw with my upper body more than my arms. Thanks for the tips
I really liked this video. I realize now how I'm not doing some of the things you said to do and most importantly I know why my elbow gets sore. I like the drill to fix the pronation and hope that working on that will alleviate that soreness from pitching
Awesome video! My son worked with a D1 college pitching coach recently and there were many similarities between the two. However, your video and lesson provide a deeper understanding of why the mechanics are as they are.
whoever does NOT like this. you more then likely suck at your job. This guy is very well educated and his information and knowledge he is sharing is very well accurate. 4 words " I fu****g love it"
Your videos have help me teach and show my 6 year old son how to pitch the correct way. Thanks coach for your advise and experiences you share with us all 🙌💯 #fanluvfromUtah
My Son pitch he is 8 and we been work real hard at trying to get him to throw the ball a lil hard. I am going to try a lot of the stuff u said. Cause there a couple thing he is doing wrong thanks to u I known how to fix it now thanks.
thanks for the video......going to try this with my 15 yr old in the next couple of weeks. Seems like we should incorporate this in his warm ups or weekly routine.......I'll keep you update, summer ball around the corner.
Wow dude thanks a lot!!! That video is awesome I didn't expected myself making that huge velocity increase than I did. Earlier this year I threw around 72 (75 tops) from the mount but out of the crowhop 83ish so I was thinking I do something wrong there. Before all this covid stuff I never considered myself as a pitcher but because of time and boredom I kinda set up an bullpen in the backyard. Your tips were kinda what I really needed man. My hip rotation was a mess, the strength which I could have taken from my lower body was kinda not existing and my shoulder seperation was horrible, but now after I worked on that I throw my 85/86 and 89 tops ... I wish I could have had a coach like you when I was younger, now with 28 I am kinda burned material. Anyways I keep on the good work and hopefully after this upcoming winter I gonna have my first 90mph outcome!
I always had great control and with those velocity tips you made a pitcher of me. Usually people considered me as a hitterdude but I guess there gonna be some change of minds next year!! Really thank you a lot!
Your the MAN John! Thanks for putting the time in to do these videos. I have a 12 year old son who is 6’1” 180 lefty. He is really starting to bring it. I want to work more mechanics and this video is perfect!
awesome video! I was a very successful HS baseball player and I now have a son that's very good at baseball now himself. ive always put him on teams that has kids 1 or 2 years older than him because he has such a strong arm and is just way better than kids hiss own age. I know quite a bit about pitching but this video showed me some things I didn't know! very good and informative video thank you for posting this and keep posting awesome videos. also just subscribed to your channel
Phenomenal video! So appreciative. I talk to my pitchers about all this stuff but I didn't know how to put it into words or drills all the time! Thanks for helping so much!
Some of this is good stuff. I glad finally coaches are starting to understand stand high velocity pitchers build up momentum. I been talking and teaching momentum since the early 90's when it wasn't popular and everyone though I was wrong. I quickly just go into a few things because of lack of time. No pitcher lands on a straight leg. Maybe after ball release and the lead leg hip rotates away. Second, probated just happens. Very rarely do u have to explain or teach that. Teaching that to a young kid could get ugly. Third if you rotate after landing to ball release, can the shoulders be uneven? That would cause the arm to be left behind and a pulling effect with the front shoulder.
No, they definitely don't land straight but the front leg straightens as they get to release point. As for pronation, I see a lot of young players who do not pronate or pronate too late (they throw sliders as fastballs). So I feel best at least trying to help them fix the problem so that they don't injure themselves. Although good pitchers do naturally pronate. I never talk about it with those who naturally do it correctly. The shoulders don't stay uneven throughout the delivery. They move from that loaded to unloaded position at release point. That's why timing is so important in the pitching delivery.
I love his videos, he indroduces very important skills that every young pitcher should know when starting out, or even someone trying to perfect their pitch.
Hey John. Great video and instruction. I do the same exercises with my pitchers and i can testify that these drills work!I occasionally get a parent who tells me that the sons rec ball coach is trying to change their mechanics because he was taught something different 25-30 yrs ago.
This is really good stuff! Only 1 thing I change for young pitchers is I remove the subject of the back leg. I focus more on striding forward than the push or drive from mound. The goal is to get further down the hill but stay balanced. So in order to get further down the hill.. .you have to push off. I've found coaching this cause the pitcher to drive off the mound! All about coaching style and knowing the player. Keep up the good work! really enjoy your videos!
Love the video! Will definitely try out some of these drills as my son is starting kid pitch this year. One critique I have is, the ex professional Texas Rangers pitcher, Steve Foucott, that taught me how to pitch also taught what you call early pronation. I could be wrong, but I think the point of teaching this is to prevent bad mechanics early on because, early pitchers especially, seem to have a tendency to want to shot put the ball especially if they pull the ball out of the glove right into a throwing position which also causes them to lose their arm arch. Unfortunately, I have seen many shot-put pitchers in little league and shot-putting the ball can lead to elbow injury. However, if they are taught to rotate the ball away so it "faces second base", then shot-putting the ball is almost impossible. Plus, so long as your wrist rotates back to the forward position before your release, you're not really pronating early. It's really only early pronation if you keep your wrist facing out through the delivery. Your wrist should definitely be behind the ball unless you're throwing a breaking ball which, I think you've agreed on other videos, isn't recommended for early pitchers. Please chime in with your thoughts on this. Do you think I'm way off base on this?
No, I think you're right that could be effective for younger pitchers who shot put the ball, but this is the end goal for high level pitchers. Early pronation is in an "unloaded" state when we want to be loaded to unload...supinated to pronated. But yes, for a young pitcher who has the shot put problem it may help him. Maybe why so many coaches teach this way? I actually never have to teach this. I only come across some guys who I have to unteach them. Most guys naturally get to a good spot unless they were taught wrong.
I played professional baseball myself and agree with *MOST* of what he's saying, but please keep the following in mind:
1. The leg drive section he talks about applies to a form of pitching style known as a "Dip and Drive". Think Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, and most power pitchers. Great Job John and THANK YOU!
john, thank you for everything you do to educate, help coaches and pitchers.
Thank you Michael
damn, good video. putting the physics in the technique. it's all about energy and power
Thanks! Yesss!
Gordon Fremen bro this guy is a quack all of this crap screws up your accuracy
if youre just focusing only on speed, sure. you gotta work on everything.
Austin T you wrong you are really bad you are not doing it right
B oi
What you demonstrated made me see all the mistakes I have done all my life thanks for doing this video much appreciated
Well done. Thanks!
Hey I want to say thanks because I want to start playing as a pitcher and with your videos I can train to be a good pitcher.
Thanks man
Thats freaking awesome!
You're welcome! Yeh when I got done I thought "nobody is going to watch a 19 min video" but it seems well received so far. Thanks Coach!
Hey this video really helped me because I'm a pitcher and I've been throwing consistant strikes ever since I watched this video.thx
This is an amazing video. After viewing hundreds of videos on pitching velocity, etc. I think this is probably the best one out there. It presents and breaks down the fundamental issues clearly and to the point. Tons of great info. Will definitely be incorporating a lot of this into my coaching next season. Great job!
really helpful video! Always wanted to pitch faster
Very Grateful to you John for posting these awesome videos.
There is no place on the internet where they tell about these things in so much detail. :)
I'm a 14 year old pitcher and this vid really helped cuz I can't throw that fals so now I've got good break and velocity thanks def gonna sub
My man is right on!! As a high velocity pitcher I stress this often with new students and players in my program. By the way nice sinker action back in the day. Roll Tide Roll
Great info, thanks for putting these videos out for Dads like me to be able to work with our kids!
I used 3 and 8 at my districts game and literally just by using those 2 I can feel my fastball getting faster, but more importantly I can control it better too. Im starting to throw with my upper body more than my arms. Thanks for the tips
What a fantastic video!!! This is the absolute best pitching instruction video on the internet!!!
These drills have been helping me get more velocity on my ball thanks ⚾💪
Awesome info. I can see at least 3 velocity killers in my boys pitching delivery. Thanks!!!
Awesome! Thanks
Great tips. All of it taught by some of the most reputable teachers who are science based in the baseball world. Thank you...
+John Ney Thank you!
Thanks for this vid! It helped me improve my velocity by around 7 mph!
That's awesome!!!
I was taught several of these killers. Put a lot of strain on my elbow. Really helpful correctives that I'll share with kids.
I really liked this video. I realize now how I'm not doing some of the things you said to do and most importantly I know why my elbow gets sore. I like the drill to fix the pronation and hope that working on that will alleviate that soreness from pitching
Keep me posted
Awesome video! My son worked with a D1 college pitching coach recently and there were many similarities between the two. However, your video and lesson provide a deeper understanding of why the mechanics are as they are.
He the one and only with him I got better and still working on stuff thank u your the best
whoever does NOT like this. you more then likely suck at your job. This guy is very well educated and his information and knowledge he is sharing is very well accurate. 4 words " I fu****g love it"
Andrew Arnold My man!!!
I felt he addressed a lot of problems people have including myself great video
Your videos have help me teach and show my 6 year old son how to pitch the correct way. Thanks coach for your advise and experiences you share with us all 🙌💯 #fanluvfromUtah
My Son pitch he is 8 and we been work real hard at trying to get him to throw the ball a lil hard. I am going to try a lot of the stuff u said. Cause there a couple thing he is doing wrong thanks to u I known how to fix it now thanks.
Thanks Coach! Excellent video!
Wow thanks this will really improve my pitching. Thank you :)
thanks for the video......going to try this with my 15 yr old in the next couple of weeks. Seems like we should incorporate this in his warm ups or weekly routine.......I'll keep you update, summer ball around the corner.
Good stuff my husband loves watching you. He has pro trout's in March he is a pitcher too
Great video.. all the keys to great mechanics on the mound
I have really bad elbow soreness and I noticed my fastball had some slider action, thanks!
I'm from Taiwan. This is video helps me a lot.
Thanks for your tips. I would like to see you on next video.
You're welcome
14:15 - completely agree. Thank you for explaining.
You’re welcome thank you
Great stuff John! Definitely can use this for my legion pitchers this summer!!
Thanks
Lucas S That’s awesome to hear brotha! Keep up the great work!
I always had great control and with those velocity tips you made a pitcher of me. Usually people considered me as a hitterdude but I guess there gonna be some change of minds next year!!
Really thank you a lot!
This video inspires me to give pitching lessons.
Your the MAN John! Thanks for putting the time in to do these videos. I have a 12 year old son who is 6’1” 180 lefty. He is really starting to bring it. I want to work more mechanics and this video is perfect!
I've been working on these drills with my 12-U lefty, and seeing major improvements! love these videos!
awesome video!
I literally make almost all of these mistakes thanks for the tips!! Very helpful
Thank you so much, this video was the difference for me between 75 and 80
Great video definatly the best one I’ve seen for velocity
I love his videos, he indroduces very important skills that every young pitcher should know when starting out, or even someone trying to perfect their pitch.
Hey John. Great video and instruction. I do the same exercises with my pitchers and i can testify that these drills work!I occasionally get a parent who tells me that the sons rec ball coach is trying to change their mechanics because he was taught something different 25-30 yrs ago.
Thanks William!
Definitely agree...great point
You are a master of pitching baseball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great vid, still trying to implement all these techniques with my son. Lots of work, thx JM
Really great execution and explanations.
Good video, very informative and not full of junk science. Thank you.
+Robert Sullivan haha junk science love it thank you 🙏
this is my first reply in my life, and this video is totally awesome ever
+Seung Hyeob Hong Cool man thanks for the comment
Can't wait to try these things. then experience them in game!!
Helped so much I really appreciate it I broke down the fundamentals of this and are now going to be using this in the every day workout !
Such a great video , I had shoulder problems when I was younger and now I know . Thank you 💯
