If not mistaken these are or were Greg Maddox’s weapons which he in my opinion allowed him to become the worlds greatest pitcher ! Because it gave him control which was accurate and longevity which is a rarity in the position of pitchers . And shows what hard work and practice can accomplish with anything you want to do in life ! A real baseball hero and legend . Watched him most of my youth and still amazed at his humble attitude which carried any team he was on

John, thank you for this video. I coach at the 10U level, and find it disturbing how some coaches at this age are teaching kids to throw sliders and curves. I had success this season teaching our pitchers to throw these three pitches along with your cutter from another video with great success. I do see that you teach the change with the pinky down alongside which some of the boys struggle with, so I let them keep their pinky on top next to the ring finger. Does the placement of the pinky help control the pitch better?

    • @YouGoPro
      @YouGoPro  7 лет назад +1

Great point about the pinky David. Some of these kids will have to adjust the grip depending on the size of their hand so the pinky being up is not a big deal. In general, the grip isn't even the most important factor. The biggest thing I want them to get is the wrist angle at release point and the timing of the pronation.

my 7 year old kid gets upset when kids hit him. i keep telling him he gets hit because he is throwing strikes right down the middle all the time and its not a bad thing. i try to reinforce that he needs to learn batters in his rec league. most kids will swing on stuff in the dirt and away pitches. hes getting the idea that placement on batters is a learned skill and regardless where a kid sets up in the box is not his concern. speed with control is good, speed without it is a walk. when he gets movement on his pitches these kids are in trouble. great video.

I was a division 1 pitcher ages ago for UAB. Which is The University of Alabama at Birmingham. On the circle change grip. I have average sized hands. So I gripped my change like a circle change. I just made a C with my index and the thumb and they were just resting on the inside of the ball. I don’t squeeze the index or the thumb at all.
With that pitch, for me I basically gripped the ball with just enough pressure so not to drop the ball. The middle , ring and pinkie is where the juice is. As I released it I wanted it to come off the ring and pinkie . It moves like a sinker except the grip is what slows down the pitch. I threw it as hard as I did my fastball. Around 90%. It ran in and down to a right hander. It was around 6 to 8 mph slower than my 4 seem that I only threw when The count was 0-2 or 1-2 and I was trying to miss high and screaming. If they didn’t bite, normally I would throw a sinker from a little lower arm slot so I got a ton of run in and down very late. That and a very slow spiked curve were probably my best pitches. I just didn’t have quite enough consistent velo on my fastball to get drafted.

Hey Coach quick question for you. My son just started pitching this year. I was wondering if there was a good exercise to help him be more consistent with his throws. He has the issue where he has a somewhat side arm throw and flicks his wrist. Doing this makes him very inaccurate with a lot of his pitches.

Little League has a published report called "Learning Curve" that addresses youth pitching injury. The Major Factor in arm injuries is NOT type of pitches but rather overuse, especially in travel and unregulated select programs. Kids with good mechanics and good coaching throw a wide variety of pitches with no problems as long as a pitch count/rest period is used.
Also most arm soreness is attributed incorrectly to breaking pitches when the real problem is lack of development in the muscles used for deceleration and also the fact that kids don't spend time "conditioning" their arms just in normal day to day play. Absent of organized sports, more and more kids are spending their free time on the couch, doing nothing to condition secondary muscles and smaller muscle groups.
When parents stop dreaming of "Scholarships" and stop having kids play 60-80 games and instead encourage kids to go play outside and develop, we will see a decline in arm injuries.

Question for you. I had a coach change my mechanics and arm slot from 3/4 to over the top and I lost all movement on my fastball and nothing feels comfortable anymore. How can I get back to my normal comfortable windup?

      I. Wan as nothing feels comfortable anymore so any arm slot I try just doesn't feel like it used to and doesn't feel natural

    1) Running fastball
    2) 2 seam fastball
    3) circle change
    4) 4 seam fastball

Isn't a running fastball just a 2 seamer? Running is the same as tailing

@@ShinyRedThingy same movement, different way of throwing. I always got more break with a RFB rather than a 2 seamer

Thank you for taking so much time to make these videos. My 12yo is a starting pitcher and has been for past 2 years now. He has 8 pitches the manager will call. We count pitches and care for his arm. Again I just love baseball and I love people like you that teach because you love baseball and kids. Thank you.
