Been throwing 12-6 curve diapers from my living room to my trash can clocking about a 2 second delay time of my wife yelling at me not to do it any more
I’m 55 and I so remember the “old guy Semi-pro pitcher” when I was 15 (1982) telling me the same exact thing at practice. He could take a baseball, roll it down his forearm and catch it between his index finger and middle finger and roll it back up. He said it’s all in the fingers and hips boys… Your a great teacher I can tell
My son throws a 4-seam fastball, a curveball, a palmball instead of a change-up because when he tried to learn the change-up he couldn't get any depth or sink, and he has a nasty sinker. He is currently 13 and on his middle school baseball team. I love your videos and have shared them with him a lot. Keep up the good work!
This is great for upcoming pitchers. I was always a small guy without much speed, but I had two pitches that could jam up a lot of batters and catchers (not bragging since I was a second baseman primarily, but they were all I had when asked to pitch.) Though I didn't have a curveball, I had a screwball that wouldn't drop much, but would break to the side real late. I had a knuckleball... well, anybody that's come across a knuckleball knows about the "wobble." Close friends and teammates often told me it looked like it was vibrating and they were never sure which way it wanted to go. Alas, I blew my knee out in high school and haven't played in 20 years.
I stopped playing professionally in 2009 so it's been a while since I threw a baseball at full speed. But I do have an old video of one of my first bullpens getting ready for my last season. Here's the link ruclips.net/video/w08Fr5R2-o4/видео.html
I love that the kids or really anyone that wants to learn the game can search these videos and get top tier instruction on not only how to throw these pitches but the correct way to throw them. When I was growing up if your families didn’t have money to send you to camps you weren’t getting the info other kids were. Thank you for taking the time to share some knowledge.
I use 3 pitches, a two seam with downward action, a curve ball (12-6) an a fork ball as a changup type pitch and these usually get me through my 4 relief innings
this video and another one of yours has very much opened my eyes to everything that was taught wrong to me when i played in little league. i pitched in little league because i was so accurate that at any given point i could hit golfballs in the strike zone but i had nothing but sliders. i watched your 9 things that kill velocity video and i was in awe that i was taught so many things wrong that could have made me a better pitcher. im getting back into an adult wood bat league and i want to pitch again and watching your videos are going to be what i watch from now on to make me a better pitcher. thank you
+Beau Carter That’s unfortunate but I’m glad you’re back in the game and I’m happy the videos are helping you. I’m here if you need me. Good luck friend.
@YouGoPro In your career throughout high school and going to the MLB. Did you ever hear of a pitch called the knuckle curve, not the spiked one. And did you ever think about learning it
thx for the tips. i am going into my 5th year of baseball. i started outfield and am now a first baseman. My coaches have been talking about pitching me but i have only 2 pitches. The 4 seam fastball and the knuckle ball. These tips made me into an amazing pitcher thx
I throw a sinking 2 seam a 12 -6 a source as you said about arm angle I just switch that if I know a hitter struggles more with breaking balls but overall my baby is my circle change!
I recently started pitching and my coach would tell me to snap my wrist when I threw a curveball and slider. It would mostly end up going outside almost every time because I snapped my wrist. I started to just let the ball come out and it has been working better than snapping my wrist.
Very well put great job explaining why the pitches do what they do if you get a good understanding of the physics you can throw 3 different pitches with a 2 seam grip I'm a righty and my best pitch was a sinker to other righties inside and more of a 2 seam/running fastball more lateral movement away to lefties (same grip) never needed a 4 seam(not that I didn't throw on occasion) complimented by my circle change looks and moves just like the sinker 10 mph slower it got more swing and misses while the sinker provoked ground balls. A hard knuckle curve with nearly vertical or 12-6 plane of break since I throw high 3/4 for my arm slot and last a cut fastball that I would throw harder than my sinker/2seam mostly but on occasion tighten my grip and snap my wrist a bit for mor lateral movement like a slider. In my opinion sliders an cutter's are siblings just like 2 seam and sinkers. Natural release point grips hand size and arm slots makes everyone's unique . I played around with how tight I grip my curve and throw a big loopy slow Barry Zito curve too. With practice you throw your usual pitches with a little more or less pressure or more follow through your 3 pitches can look like 10. Very simple and effective approach especially if yours going through the lineup for the 2nd or 3rd time since I didn't throw especially hard at all I had to keep the hitters unbalanced another way and sinkers get the quick groundball out to keep pitch count low and batters from seeing all your tools and learning tendencies. Attack the zone down and enjoy those 3 pitch innings and recover base hits with double plays strikeouts are overrated and inflate your pitch count
I'm trying to perfect three pitches right now: 4-seam fastball, Knuckleball, and Palmball. I am having trouble with controlling rotations on my knuckleball, but my palm ball has a really nice drop to it.
I've just started playing baseball but I want to work up to pitching. I come from a cricket background so am more comfortable throwing a 2seam fb rather than 4 seam. So I'm working on that as well a slurve and sinker to go with it. And a splitter / fork as a change up pitch. I have a long way to go. But I want to have something for the start of next season I can at least build on.
I def will. Just finished My first season of baseball and have always been interested in pitching just never had any idea of what I'm doing. Your videos have really helped to understand the theory behind it. I just need to work on putting it into practice So thank you for doing these videos.
YouGoPro the two seam and the sinker are really proficient. Then the knuckleball, then the change up. Also I'm twelve years old and I can throw 71 mph. 💪🏼💪🏼⚾️🔥
Slider is the best pitch around for me. Followed by a forkball or knuckleball. This video has good advice for players. I coach 9 year old little league, and besides trying to contain them, sometimes they get frustrated on basic skills.
very helpful video! learned a lot from it. i am a freshman at los angeles valley juco and throw side arm trying to make it to the next level. i’m trying to develop a sinker so this really helped me out. i throw the basic four seam, slider and change. i’m trying to find a way to make my pitches more effective. keep up the vids. thanks for the help.
Started throwing the forkball when I was14 it is my favourite pitch to throw today because it fools a lot of batters and produces ground balls for double plays
Hey, thanks for the video. I throw a 2-seem and a slider in my over 30 baseball league (the 2 pitches I have, besides a standard 4-seem, that I can consistently hit spots with), and I want to incorporate a reliable 12-6 curve as well. That was a good description of swing plane, as related to the vertical movement of a pitch being more damaging to a batter than horizontal movement. Keep up the good work.
When I played AA ball, no matter how I throw my fastball it had a natural cutter movement, so, how do I grip and throw the cutter? Now the one I'll love to learn is a 2 seam fb
I was told by some coaches that throwing the sinker is a hard pitch on the shoulder. I was wondering how your arm/shoulder holding up. I like your videos and my son already throws a great slider but now he's pitching varsity as a sophomore and need another pitch that moves. 2nd question. my son 2seam fast has a tail on it. good or bad. thanks
Used the fork ball for the first time yesterday because of you, it was an amazing pitch the batter thought it hit the plate even though it didn't thanks and great video
I have a 12-6 Curve, 2 Seam Fastball, Changeup, and a Slider. I can throw a Forkball but it’s very inaccurate so I don’t really try to. My coach taught me to be able to throw a Fastball from a submarine armslot to keep batters off balance, and I’m learning a Curveball down there too.
Throw a 2 seam fast ball and a forkball which is my bread and butter pitch. Trying to mix a curve in the every once in a while, but I can never seem to get the technique down during a game. Flat surface it's good but off the mound is a struggle.
I’m trying to get better with the forkball. Sometimes it has more knuckling action and sometimes it dives. Depends on the arm angle. It’s like two different pitches with one grip.
hey john, I have been playing baseball for 7 years now and i am 15, I have been noticing that I have been having more arm pain and i was wondering if you know any good exercises or routines to do before i go out and pitch. I love the videos and thanks
s a that was happening to me so i went to the doc and they did xrays and told me my growth plate was widening in my shoulder, i was younger but i also had a growth spurt at the time, so that could be what is happening, i would get it checked out
Thanks for the video I was pitching pretty good with just fastball but I started to lose control. I watched this video and my coach noticed a huge difference.
Hey John, I'm working on my forkball at a higher arm angle but im not getting that slip and the break, I'm kind of getting more of a constant rainbow with no speed changes or sudden break. Anything I can do to get that nice break?
I pitch a 4 seam, sinker, 2 seam, slider, curve ball, and I'm learning a knuckle and maybe u could help me with maybe a great batting demonstration that could help me bat a lot better
My team needs pitchers n I used to be one of the best pitchers in my age level until I dropped my arm slot a few years ago n started having arm problems so now I'm working on getting a delivery like Stroman and trying to pickup a changeup to go with my fastball and curve.
YouGoPro Alright so pitched for the 4th time this season last night n went in down by 1 against a pretty cocky team, I got an out then ended up loading the bases and went to my slider to strike their cleanup hitter out to get out of it, one of the dirtiest offspeeds I've thrown, then turned to their dugout and gave them the shush gesture. Scored 2 runs to take the lead went out and walked the first guy then picked him off then struck out the next two to win it. Safe to say it felt really good. I think we clinched a playoff spot w that win too.
Oh and my curveball turned into a slider now because of my arm slot dropping, still working on the changeup but since I've changed my delivery and start mixing my timing and hesitating/quick pitching I've been more dominant.
Hey I throw both over hand and submarine by switching between pitches and have been wanting to learn more pitches to use submarine but confused if I should throw it different or hold it different
We have a grandson in pony league and he is a pretty good pitcher but I think he will be interested in your video and will pass it on to him. Thank you. Ron
I'm a pitcher going into senior year in high school. I throw a 2 seamer changeup curve and slurve. I only throw about 83-84 on my fastball but i hit my spots with it and i had a low era. Do you think i need to increase my velo to start getting looks from d2 d3 colleges?
Most scouts are way over the top on 100 mph fastballs. Kyle Hendricks went to Dartmouth on a scholarship, and has never seen 90 on his fastball. There is a scout out there who is impressed with control and low era. I would be surprised if your high school coach doesn't know a few.
2 Seam 4 seam slider circle change and Curve... my offspeeds break perfectly like how I want them too but I can't control the circle change and I have trouble with slider but Curve is my dominant off speed 4 seem and 2 seam r fine
can you give me any tips on increasing my velocity off the mound? I'm a RHP throwing mid to high 80s right now but just isn't fast enough for me. I'm throwing a fastball (4 seem) 12-6 curveball, change up, and cutter. also going to try adding a sinker as well. any tips to throw harder or pitches to throw are GREATLY appreciated.
It's interesting to hear you say you don't need a wrist movement, its just how you're holding the ball, and the release angle. Thats exactly how i improved my hook in bowling lol. You dont need to "try" and put spin on it, just adjust your hold and release point until it spins how you want on release
Yeah myself and others were kinda hoping you could show us these pitches in action. But it's all good. Maybe next video you can do a continuation off this one and show us you actually throwing a bullpen with them
I’m 39 and playing in an adult baseball league out of SC, I’m throwing a 4seam fast ball, a slider and a split finger. Any tiles on throwing more off-speed pitches to preserve my arm better? I’m throwing around 87 mph and my arm seems to start bothering me around the underside of my elbow and forearm these days.
Im a Senior in high school at Pensacola Catholic in Pensacola, Florida. I am considered one of the most dominate pitchers on my team and committed to Tennessee. I throw 4 pitches, 4-Seam Fastball (90-93), 2-Seam (85-89), Curveball (79-82) and Circle-Change (72-75). Would you recommend I learn another pitch? If so, which one?

eugene051070 u better start saving up for his Tommy John surgery because throwing a curveball at age 13 is going to destroy his elbow look it up

YouGoPro lol it funny :) but, big fan of your videoes, don't quit, I learn lots. I'm a pitcher myself & take many tips from you.

My pitches are a two seam fastball, circle change, sinker, and a knuckleball. Thanks coach!
Awesome man! Which is your best pitch?
YouGoPro the two seam and the sinker are really proficient. Then the knuckleball, then the change up. Also I'm twelve years old and I can throw 71 mph. 💪🏼💪🏼⚾️🔥
No Doubt Baseball you can't throw 71 lol
Madden what do you think the three things you need in order to be a successful pitcher
Slider is the best pitch around for me. Followed by a forkball or knuckleball. This video has good advice for players. I coach 9 year old little league, and besides trying to contain them, sometimes they get frustrated on basic skills.

I have a two seam, four seam, curveball, and changeup, and I'm trying to learn a knuckleball. Any tips?
+mario napolitano Have you seen the documentary on Netflix called knuckleball
YouGoPro I don't have netflix
Thank you it helped a lot I'm trying to learn the sinker and the slider
fastball changeup knuckleball and knucklecurve
very helpful video! learned a lot from it. i am a freshman at los angeles valley juco and throw side arm trying to make it to the next level. i’m trying to develop a sinker so this really helped me out. i throw the basic four seam, slider and change. i’m trying to find a way to make my pitches more effective. keep up the vids. thanks for the help.

Hey, thanks for the video. I was told by some coaches that throwing the sinker is a hard pitch on the shoulder. I was wondering how your arm/shoulder holding up. I think I answered this question on another vid. Did I?
YouGoPro You did, but I throw a sinker an it doesn't hurt at all
Used the fork ball for the first time yesterday because of you, it was an amazing pitch the batter thought it hit the plate even though it didn't thanks and great video
My pitches are 4-seam, 2-seam, circle change-up, cutter, and a curveball in the works. I'm thinking about dropping the curveball for the slider.
Nice! I like that you're going to drop one to add one. Which is your best pitch?
YouGoPro Thanks! I'd have to say my circle change. It goes well with my 4-Seam, 2-seam, and cutter. It keeps the hitters off balance.
Thank u for the info with pitching got on baseball team with these pitches
sinker and slider seem pretty simple, thanks for sharing
You're welcome
This is your best video yet thanks!
Well thank you sir!

I'm gonna work this summer to have these for pitches to be my repitoar with a 2 seam in there as well
Great vid coach, whats a good backdoor pitch a pitcher to slide in there?
hey man can you teach me how to do the split-Finger fastball
I have a travel ball game and I will try a couple of these pitches and see how I do
cool
Thx coach madden i am a 11u pitcher and i really need more pitches
I throw sinkers and two seams and four seams
hey john, I have been playing baseball for 7 years now and i am 15, I have been noticing that I have been having more arm pain and i was wondering if you know any good exercises or routines to do before i go out and pitch. I love the videos and thanks
You should see a doc if you have pain. But if it's soreness you need to eat better, get stronger, and be more prepared.
s a that was happening to me so i went to the doc and they did xrays and told me my growth plate was widening in my shoulder, i was younger but i also had a growth spurt at the time, so that could be what is happening, i would get it checked out
Thank you i will definitely go get it checked thanks
The little clips between gave my epilepsy😂
War Eagle. My 12yr old has a breaking ball and just trying to learn a few more. Thanks.
As a BP pitcher for our 12u team I'm always throwing 12-6 curve, 2 seam FB, 4 seam FB, and a circle change.
haha nice
I can't throw that sinker for squat. I just are hard time with the forefinger lead arm motion. Like the slider though!
Jeffrey Palm II get ready to get tommy john😁
Infinite Flight Universe I'm happy you and me know a thing or two about curve balls
The Executor your dumb, hes the BP pitcher hes and adult😂😂
I play AA peewee baseball but I throw 2-Seam 4-Seam changeup and slider
THIS IS A LIFE SAVORRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I currently throw a slider a curveball, a circle change and I'm working on a cutter
Thanks for the video I was pitching pretty good with just fastball but I started to lose control. I watched this video and my coach noticed a huge difference.
I gotta quick question for you. Is going to batting cages with mechanical pitching machines good for hitting? Thanks so much!!
I don't like it but it's better than not hitting.
Hey John, I'm working on my forkball at a higher arm angle but im not getting that slip and the break, I'm kind of getting more of a constant rainbow with no speed changes or sudden break. Anything I can do to get that nice break?
Without seeing you pitch....I'm guessing you have to add more arm speed.
I've got a 4 seam, slider & change up
Nice! What kind of change up?
I pitch sinker circle change 4 seem and now I’m learning forkball and can you do a video on the circle change

Hey coach any chance of having a slow pitch video to see the technique for us dads that can’t afford private lessons? Thanks .
What's the difference between the 12-6 curve ball and the sinker, aside from the throwing style?
I throw 2 and 4 seam fastball, change up and well. I'm try to learn new pitches what would u recommend on learning to throw a new pitch?
And I really enjoyed ur video
keep up the good work sir
Try to master those 3 first and then you can worry about another pitch. Thank you for watching and commenting!
2 Seam 4 seam slider circle change and Curve... my offspeeds break perfectly like how I want them too but I can't control the circle change and I have trouble with slider but Curve is my dominant off speed 4 seem and 2 seam r fine
How do u throw a cutter and a slurve

John - how safe throwing a sinker is for the arm in 12U players - when pronating the arm inward like that??
I throw 4 seam, 2 seam but I want a sinker a slider that I want to make better and a great 12-6 curval that I need to make a little little adjustment
I'm lefty by the way
Nice! Have you checked out my advanced sinker and slider training course?
I started throwing a sinker and I've had good luck with it but not as much depth
I throw the sinker 4sfb 2sfb, circle change up, curveball, 12 6 cb, screwball,
can you give me any tips on increasing my velocity off the mound? I'm a RHP throwing mid to high 80s right now but just isn't fast enough for me. I'm throwing a fastball (4 seem) 12-6 curveball, change up, and cutter. also going to try adding a sinker as well. any tips to throw harder or pitches to throw are GREATLY appreciated.
Ya I want u to show us your pitches
It's interesting to hear you say you don't need a wrist movement, its just how you're holding the ball, and the release angle. Thats exactly how i improved my hook in bowling lol. You dont need to "try" and put spin on it, just adjust your hold and release point until it spins how you want on release
for example velocity command or pitch variation
I throw a four seam, two seam, curve, and a slider. I'm hoping to learn how to throw a knuckle ball, thank you
Yeah myself and others were kinda hoping you could show us these pitches in action. But it's all good.
Maybe next video you can do a continuation off this one and show us you actually throwing a bullpen with them
I throw a 4 seam, 2 seam, sinker (main), slider, and curveball. Good pitches? I change my arm angel a little bit between a slider and sinker
I throw 2-seam, 4-Seam, knuckle and circle change. Do you think I should add in sinker? I mastered those 4
Thanks for teaching me how to do those piches
you're welcome
My pitches are a 4-seam 2-seam curveball and changeup and am trying to learn a sinker but I can't quite get the movement I want
Nice! What kind of change up do you throw? Also, have you checked out my advanced sinker and slider training?
Thank u so much my pitching has got so good
