    Enjoying this series. Hoping to do something similar with a new van and new Patrol too. That tow ball weight was one issue that was concerning me but you guys have it sorted. Thanks for being the pioneers for us on that.

    Great work guys. The authorities are a pain in the butt regardless of which state you are in and somehow they word stuff that contradicts items. You have done it the right and the easy way. Really wish the industry would get cleaned up as stop companies advertising ridiculous prices for things that you don't need or really are not going the help that much.

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Adrian. Our goal was to simply help some other people to get a similar upgrade at a cheap price in Queensland. As you say, so many brands charge way too much money for this stuff especially if you only need 100-200kg. There is no continuity across the states with GVM or GCM requirements, it’s a shame.

    Hello Big OZ Explorers,I finally had my GVM Upgrade done by ARB today at Townsville,total paided $595,with a all the paper work and compliance plate fitted as well ,as the vehicle already had the rear Heavy Duty OLD Man Emu Suspension fitted when I purchased the Vehicle,last year but recently I had the Warn Winch fitted and a OLD Man Emu 2 inch lift kit for the front,a few weeks ago,so now I have the Certificate of Modification & the OME GVM Upgrade sticker in the the front page of the Manual,and next step is to complete a change of details form at the registration dept,now I have a peace of mind,Thanks guys for sharing and getting the message out,as most people that I have seen on the road are definitely well overweight,as most have not done the GVM Upgrade when towing their Caravan or Camper Trailer.

    Great information love the passion you guys have on the Y62, by increasing the GVM by 180 then you will have to take this off the weight of the caravan to keep it under the GCM? If a remember by one of your previous vids you were over the limit in the van and you had to remove items so this could be interesting to see how you go with the next weigh in.

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад

      Hey Robert, back in the day when we were removing items from the caravan so that we wouldn’t be overweight, this was so we could be under our 6t GCM on the Ranger. We now have 7t and the GCM should not be a problem 😁 The caravan was the one part of our setup that was totally within its weight requirements and always has been 😂😂 the GVM increase allows us to move weight around a bit and not be restricted in the car that’s all ☺️ Thanks for watching and following closely Robert 🥰

  • @bradrein08
    @bradrein08 4 года назад +1

    Like someone mentioned, the reason right or wrong u require a rear bar or long range tank is due to the GVM is with 200kg and above rear springs. Therefore if u are not carrying the weight to load the springs then with independent suspension it throws out the alignment and ride of the car. In Vic with the full GVM upgrade we gain an extra 585kg so worth it.i like what u did though smart and cheap to get a little extra which helps stay legal these days

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад

      And in most cases when it’s achievable (especially if you can gain 500+kg!) it’s great!! In QLD, unfortunately it’s not achievable and not so great 😭 this little mod helped us and if someone else only needs 150ks or there about, this is an excellent and affordable alternative. Thanks for watching Brad 😁

    • @bradrein08
      @bradrein08 4 года назад +1

      Yeah 100% what use did was very smart and most times that 180KG is all you need. Keep up the good work. It sucks that Qld dont allow the full benefit.

    Great little vid and great information. I'll be giving my local engineer a call next week.
    The reason Ontrack require a rear wheel carrier or LRT is due to the required rating of the ring springs for the 4T upgrade and the IRS rear end. If the weight isn't in the back then the tyres will scrub out. I didn't go with that option for the very reason you didn't. I want the extra GVM for the ball weight not a LRT or rear bar.

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад

      It’s a shame they can’t get around the QLD law so what they’re doing can help us out too but with only a 10% gain of which half you loose, it’s unfortunate ☹️ we totally would have gone down that track if we could raise it over 4t too, oh well! If the rules ever change maybe we will 😏

    The added weight for the GVM would also be about adding weight to keep the balance, because without it, it'll be way to hard in the rear, it was the same when we did our Hilux, the load needs to be constant otherwise the drivability of the car would be terrible.
    We have also done the GVM upgrade to our S5Y62, installed by said company and it has given us a total 4085kg so 585kg increase, I'm fully aware that isn't currently possible in QLD.
    Whilst you didn't mention said company, everyone will know who you're talking about.🤔

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад

      Hilix would 100% need extra weight in the rear being a dual cab, if you’ve ever picked up a tub on the back of a dual cab they weigh nothing! Chris and I were able to move our one alone with no help when we had the Ranger :)

    I think you'll find with the long range or rear bar is that when they done the gvm upgrade the vehicle used would have had these fitted therefore for a vehicle to qualify they'd have to have the same modifications as vehicles tested. It would interesting to see if you could same mods in vic and get it passed for extra 180kgs

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад

      Yes you may be right. There would have been much time and effort with engineers to get the 10%, it’s a shame QLD is so difficult! If you can get it to pass in VIC let us know, I hope every one can seeing Nissan has OK’ed these weights on their axles 🙌🏻😁

    • @1NSTYL
      @1NSTYL 3 года назад

      pretty sure they want you to add a rear bar or tank because stock car is too light for the gvm upgrade, with the 400kg constant springs the wheel alignment in the rear can't be set without the extra weight. since you're car is already has added weight I think the bar or tank was not required.

    Does this GVM upgrade work on previous Y62 series?

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад

      To be honest I wouldn’t be sure without looking at the original manufacturers brochures. You’ll need to figure out what the axle capacities are on your particular model. If the axle capacities combined are higher than the allowed GVM, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to do this too 🤙🏻

  • @aedeau
    @aedeau 4 года назад

    Just to clarify, did this only work because you upgraded rear springs, installed air bags and pulled out 3rd row (reclassification as a goods carrying vehicle)? Could you drive a S5 Y62 off the showroom floor to this bloke and get the GVM upgrade for $500?

    • @kerryottley8116
      @kerryottley8116 4 года назад

      i have similar Question on this. Are the Springs and Airbags 'required' to get this plate? If so, What are the Spring rating ?

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад

      This will depend on the engineer you see I think. The independent axles are rated to take the weight by the manufacturer so technically the setup off the showroom floor is sufficient but engineers can all be slightly different with different expectations to give you the GVM upgrade. Having the springs/airbags etc of course will help as well and to be honest I highly recommend them especially if towing a heavy caravan or load. I’d get a couple of quotes locally and tell them what you know and see how you go ☺️ thanks for tuning in guys 🤙🏻

    I would strongly suggest you do a weigh in before you add the Bar , Winch , Roofrack or anything else , I doubt that a upgrade of 180kg will be enough . I know you said you did all the math before you bought the 62 , so I don't know how you thought you could add all that gear and still been legal , especially with a ball weight of 315kg like you said in the first video . A 62 tares at 2715 ,add 130lts of fuel 100kg then people 150-200kg you are at 3T already , add the 315 ball , you have 180-190kg left if you are lucky . I have the Fourby Fitouts unit , Rhino Bar , winch , under body plates , no Roof Rack , no bigger tyres and only 180 on the ball and we still struggle to stay under GVM . I have looked in to the axle group 180kg upgrade here in Vic before Covid got in the way , did the brake tests , for anyone interested we did several stops from 60 kph and 100 kpk . Stopping from 97.9 kph = 0.99G . time was 3.55 seconds , and 43.4 mts to come to a complete stop . We have just returned from a trip to the Murray River via the High Country we were 4.7T on the bridge but the Patrol was bang on 3.5 including the 180 ball . So its a really good idea to weigh before you add any more stuff not after .

      @@BigOzExplorers that's good I do hope it works out for you . Like I have said before in doing my research before buying a 62 after looking up the specs , I even weighed the dealers S3 , that confirmed Nissans specs were pretty much spot on , so I knew you would never get away without a upgrade . I talked to you know who down here in Vic about their GVM upgrade , it wasn't available when I bought my S4 they were still waiting on approval but I didn't like the idea of adding weight , just to get a big upgrade , I wasn't going to need anyway , I especially didn't think much of just lifting the front with a spacer , it seems that has caused a few issues . I did have HD Air Bags in the back but removed them when I fitted the Lovells springs , my Patrol now sits 10mm above std unloaded height when loaded inc ball weight , its always loaded ready to go except for ball weight . Front is 15mm down on std with the Bar and winch . I will be waiting to see any updates .

    For those considering GVM/GCM upgrades considering doing things pre-registeration so that it comes Federally compliant and not just state based. Also if you need GVM/GCM best to go down the dual cab ute path - i have a Ranger with pre-rego upgrafes taking my gvm from 3.2T to 3.5T and GCM from 6T to 7.1T.

    • @BigOzExplorers
      @BigOzExplorers  4 года назад

      Some people don’t know they need a GVM increase until it’s registered or buy second hand and can’t get around this. We actually started with a Ranger and sold it for the Patrol because it’s engine capacity and GCM just wasn’t sufficient for our van etc... good car for a much smaller setup than ours that’s all! :) Under QLD rules you also can’t increase your GCM ☹️

    Hi guys, just on your upgrade. It is all a lot of crp. Your up grade should of been done before u purchases vehicle, meaning before it was registered. Don’t listen to anyone. I have a Kakadu and when it comes down to legal stuff eg insurances ! U are not covered. It is a grey area. These engineers can say what they want, to take your money. But please , go on internet and read up or go in the road services ,whatever u call in qld. Every state is different, but please be careful. It is only a gvm upgrade, that does not , if some thing was to happen u are NOT covered with any insurance. Heads up I have someone who is ceo of a big insurance. Your axel might say it can take so much, but again , legally the car will not be able to handle it. All ,y vehicles have been brand new, only I backed off the Nissan which I loved, loved only due to my health I ended up with a near new Kakadu, and wanted to do the same .. just watch the wording they use. I hope I haven’t confused u, as I have confused myself. Read up on it.

      I'm looking to have this done to my vehicle and based on your comments I just rang my insurer (RACQ) to ask about the implications for insurance. They knew all about GVM upgrades for towing and said as long as everything was done by an approved engineer, the vehicle had the blue modification plate and they were informed it so it could be noted on the insurance document then they were happy.

So , I hope the insurances actually have all this in black and white for all us caravan people. Cheers guys
