The fact that Eddie was 20, 21 when he came up with these approaches that had really not been done before, is the reason why we still talk about and admire his genius.
R.I.P. King Eddie, and thank you for it all.
Great channel Marty, and thank you as well.
Thanks so much man!! 😎🙌
Thank you. You have a nice easy going approach in showing, and explaining. Make it easy to pick it up, instead of having fingers covering chosen frets like others, and wanting to go back to play by ear.
Bonus Dude.
I knew about artificial harmonics, but you blew my mind with that angled B maj harmonic chord strike.
It's a cool trick! Pretty neat too 😎
I remember learning this 30+ years ago. I still have my notebook with the hand written tab. Now I can relive those lessons through the man Marty! Awesome channel!
I have a few learning disabilities and you are hands down the best VH teacher I have come across, my fav new channel, cheers !
Thanks so much man I am very glad to hear I have helped you out... thanks so much for the support man and Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁
It's so sad that we're never going to hear his genius. Ever again. It's Prashant Halen song I ever heard I was 12 years old. I can still feel the excitement could I get the first time I heard it. And then I get a lump in my throat. He was blessed with a gift from God. He just made you feel good when he played. It's not a long journey from the Cradle to the Grave. We better all enjoy everyday we're given
Very true indeed. 🙏😎
Wow I wish I had RUclips back in the 80’s! Going to pick up the guitar and follow your jam on this one. Well done and an easier vh tune - but it truly captures his style and I thank you for that.
Thanks! Yes RUclips back in the day would have been so amazing!!!
We wouldn’t be ruining our records then!!!! LOL….. Best thing about learning songs in the 80’s was we all developed great ears!!!
Hi Marty, the more I understand Van Halen thanks to you, the more I realize how much of a giant he was. Thanks for your lessons. Ciao!
Hire very welcome man! Thanks so much for watching. Happy holidays! 🎁🍺🎵🎵🎵
Hi Marty, your Channel is fantastic for learning and discovering again Van Halen. Go on this way. Many thanks for the greetings: nice holidays to you too! 👋
Watched this again. Great video. Great song. Been in awe of Eddie since first hearing him in the 70’s.
Fantastic lesson, and slick playing - thank you! Wish I could have watched your lessons back in the 1980s!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching man!
Guitar Genius for sure !!!! EVH along with Nokie Edwards, Chet Atkins and a few select others really set the mold for guitar playing. Vito Bratta was another that was a complete guitar genius probably the best at what he did. This video is probably the best instructional video I've ever seen for this song !!!! Thank you so much.
Great job! Great video. You do a great job breaking sh+’ down. Your efforts are appreciated.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful man! 🙌
Thank you Marty for this amazing video. We all miss EVH and nothing better than learning with you how to play their best songs. Best regards from Argentina
Rest in peace Eddie, you make this a lot easier than that other guy on here.
Glad you are watching and taking stuff away from the videos! 😁
Love that guitar and that delay is blowing my mind…..thank you buddy.
Good lesson Marty. It looks too fun. Can't wait to give it a go. Thank you. Tucson, AZ.
Have fun!
Marty...Thanks for that wonderful breakdown of that amazing song. You are a true musican. Thank You
You're welcome! Thanks for the nice comment man. I'm glad these videos help people out! I really appreciate the support. 😎🤟🏻
Thank you for EVH 101! Again! I learning VH better than ever because of your teaching style!
That's so great to hear man! 🙌
One of the best Van Halen songs imo . He had such a great touch and with all those little nuances Eddie added so much magic so his playing & even simple riffs came alive . Great lesson .!
Thanks Neil. I totally agree!
Ironically, he and Al kinda hated this song. They've said in interviews that the idea for the song was MUCH different than what it ended up being. Ted kinda steered it in this direction. Both Ed and Al's attitude towards it became, "Eh. It just is what it is." I think Al's quote was, "Let's play it faster so it'll be over sooner." 😂 The brothers, man.
@@e.l.norton I know they hated Dancing In The streets for the same reason.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker That's part of the genius of the brothers. They could take something that maybe wasn't so great an idea and still turn it into "Van Halen".
Thanks Marty!. I really do appreciate your time doing these instructions. It brought me back to guitar playing after years.
You're very welcome! That's so great to hear man!
Marty have you ever done humans being it's my favorite VANHALEN song everything he does is in this song and the wicked octave climb at the end outstanding Edju
Not yet man! I want to. Seriously. I plan on it soon. I love that song as well. It’s amazing. Great movie too.
Just wanted to back up what everyone else is saying bud. Nicely broken down and easy to understand. Great job! 👌
Thanks man 😎🍺
Well done.... Just awesome... Thanks for sharing...🤘🤘🤘
Thank you, my pleasure! Glad you liked it. 😎
13:56 thank you for breaking down this technique especially with the explanation of the slide. I always wondered how he got this sound
You're welcome man!! Thanks for watching.
Special appreciation for your great guitar tone 😍
Excellent lesson Marty! I love the guitar too. I’ve been watching all of your Van Halen videos for a week now. You’re awesome 👍🏻
Thanks Joel! I'm so happy to hear these help out. I appreciate you watching man! ☮️😎
Hey CK,we all wish we had Utube back in the 80's,hell,I wish I had it in the 70's HA!
Lol. I hear ya 😂
Nice little lesson. as a side note, I started taking a shot every time you try to get your hair out of the way. 7 minutes in... I am buzzing. Thanks for both the lesson and the buzz. Now, off to the woodshed!
This brings back so many good memories, thank you so much.
You're welcome😎🙌
Hey Marty, in this video I believe your the first person to nail it correctly. Your correct saying that Eddie was always changing up is music from original. As Eddie had said it’s all about the feeling. Great job!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback and for the comment. Eddie had a balance between technique and feel. He grew up listening to old school feel players and interpreted it the way he thought was right and relied on his instincts and musicality. That was the catalyst to the development of his “sound”. I think that’s why he adapted and modified stuff so much. You kind of have to approach his stuff with that mindset. (I think)
Be proud of your acheivements, this video was done extremkely well, thanks for your hard work. If you took the theory out oif the picture I could swear It was Eddie himself teaching this lesson.
Thanks man! That's a great complement. I really appreciate that. And thanks for watching! 😎🥂
This is fantastic! You've absolutely nailed it: Tone, nuances, harmonics...This couldn't have been done better had it been taught by Eddie himself. Excellent job! 🤘
I’m glad you liked and thanks so much for the nice comment. I really appreciate it man! I love this song and really wanted to share my take on how to play it.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker You're welcome and you've done this song justice. There need not be any other posts on how to play this song!
It is fantastic. 🤠
Agreed
Love this song! Great lesson Marty 🤘👍
Thanks Marty I’m going to give this one a go. Great tips!
Have fun!
I loved how Eddie could just the sound he needed a lot of the time just putting the guitar through a stack and using his volume knob & pick attack to get a cleaner sound. I often approached playing live like this. My amp & my channel switch, with a dual drive head. I always tried to approach things with a keep it simple stupid approach to my guitar rig/ guitar parts I wrote. Sometimes its not what you play, but what you don't. Serve the song. Another great lesson bro.
Thanks, amazing and melodic riff
Thanks for watching 🎵🎸😁
Beautiful lesson.Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for the cool comment and watching! 😎
Thank you so much for sharing this! I’m putting together my first super strat and want to have some fun stuff to play when it’s ready.

Well done Marty! You explain this all very well....love that you hand draw your chord shapes!
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. It takes time to write this stuff out but it adds a personal touch which is what I go for. 😎🤟🏻

Thank you! 😎🎶
Great lesson! Thanks
Thanks man! 😎🤟🏻
Marty we love you man!keep on putting killer content 👏🕊
Thanks man! I appreciate it. I have some good stuff coming up! 😎🤟🏻
Marty, in few words, let me tell you and with all my pleasure, that you have a great way to teach, considering the technical way of teaching but also the ability you have got, probably over the years, but I am also sure that being a teacher is something that belongs to our own DNA, those skills that a great teacher needs to pass his passion and knowledge to his students.
Thanks and all the best!
CIRO ✌🏻🍻😉
Great lesson and fantastic insights! Really enjoyed. Thank you
How'd I miss this? Subscribed.
Thanks so much man! I appreciate you! 😎☮️
Nice. Was going to comment negatively, then thumbs up, now thank you
I'm totally digging the guitar Marty. I have a white left-handed Charvel So-Cal that I've thought about getting a paint job on that's kinda stealthy. I would do a dark gray body with black stripes, and maybe an ebony fretboard. I'd love to have an old Beretta headstock too. In my mind it looks cool
Love the tone and the playing on this lesson, nice job. I always thought this song was done in E-flat though?
Only because Ed tuned down 1/2 step...It wasn't actually played in Eb on the guitar...🙃
outstanding. thanks, youtube algorithm :) subscribed :)
Thanks so much!! Thank you 😊
I know this is an Eddie channel but Mike's bass playing/feel is killer on this song.
True man. Eddie’s stuff was great but the foundation made it spectacular. In my opinion that’s why so many metal and rock bands from this era fell flat or didn’t have staying power. It’s all the ingredients. Not just one guy. Thanks for the comment! 😎
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker So true. 100% correct.
Aw marty awesome! Been wanting to learn this 1 so bad. This 1, and gimmie all your lovin by ZZ Top. To funny you popped this 1 up. Thanks again!
Peace, Love, and Rock n Roll. 😎
-edit- ok it was 7 months ago, where the hell am i. But regardless, thanks!

Great job! Please keep your VH series going!
You’re welcome. I will! 😎🙌
Such a kill lesson thank you bud figured it out except the harmonicx awesome .....thank you sir. 2thumbs up
Thanks for watching man! Glad it helped you out 😎🤟🏻
Can't wait til the Black and yellow gets here, then I'll have 2 guitars.I keep my wolfgang standard in flat tuning.I'm gonna keep the bumble bee in standard so I don't have to be retuning all the time. It's got the d tuna also. It's got a couple of dings so i'm getting a great deal on it,or I wouldn't be able to get it.Knocking almost 400.00 off. Thanks for teaching this song Marty, one of my favs 4 shure.Seen em in Raleigh N.C. 1979 when it came out. They opened for Boston.Great show.
I love the bumble bee!!! Boston and VH. Holy crap. That’s a dream come true for me!!
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Hey Marty, they also had POCO,they opened, then THE OUTLAWS,then VAN HALEN, BOSTON the headliner.
Oh yea,the bumblebee came in.Tremolo feels alittle tight but i'm loving it.
Brilliant thank you
Thanks man! Much appreciated. 🥂☮️
Nice tone and an understandable lesson. Well done!
Thanks Shawn! I appreciate it and glad it had a positive impact! 😎
Thanx Man-- Youre awesome

You’re very welcome!
Awesome, thanks .. new subscriber for sure. Tuning in the record 1/2 step down to E flat? Also, did I miss the part where you show "ooh baby baby won't you turn your head my way" part??
outstanding job! learned a lot from this video, not just about the song.
That’s great man. So glad to hear that! Thank you so much.
Thanks for the tips buddy, ive been earring it in eb, ill continue as i like the tone but using the tips you suggest, thanks brother
Cats! You have cats! You're now my favorite go to lesson king! 🐈
Yes! My cats won't leave me alone. Lol. They're good guys. 😄
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker i have a particular ginger, Bahboo, he's always in my studio when I'm in there working on songs or recording. He's our 'producer' 😆 if i could a picture of him here you'd see why. He loves to sit by the consoles in the chair or atop it's high back. Really awesome. He's the only cat allowed in there... we have a gang of them lol. No litter box in it, when he wants to go out he'll let me know in various ways. Waiting on your next vids brother. Hope you had a nice valentines day.
you have quite the behind the seen crew, dog supervises and cat handles the technical stuff. and they like V/H....... tooo funny!
Yeh my furry friends are always willing to help out when the camera rolls! Haha

Thanks! For more info on this guitar check out a video I posted today on it! 😎🎶🎶🎶
Excellent lesson, Marty. You totally explained and clearly demonstrated how to play that song. Thank you. I subscribed and looking forward to more of your lessons.
This is awesome especially since it’s in standard tuning!
However it would’ve been even better if you had it done the complete song and included the bridge section!
Thanks again

You're very welcome!! Thanks for watching man!
sice a few days i watching your Videos, and i really like the art of how you explain and show the different problems and riffs. Thank you very much. Would be great to know how you reach your heavy sounding sounds. also for the Def leppard Videos.
Nice vid man! did I miss the Oooh baby baby part though?
Yeh I’m such a dork. Sorry!! Lol
It’s a B to C Sharp back to a B. It does that a few times then goes to A and then into the chorus. I know that may now help but that’s the basic idea.
Super class
Excellent tutorial man! Sidenote, have you heard Kent Carrlevi’s version of this song… it’s on RUclips, excellent cover/ arrangement
Just wanted to say thanks. Great job bringing this lesson for idiots like me. New sub from NJ
Thanks man! I appreciate the support and am really glad this helped you out. More to come!!
Hi Matt. I’m a huge longtime Edward fan...since February of 1978 to be exact. You’re ears and explanations are expert level. Is there any chance you would do a similar breakdown of Romeo Delight? The intro after the tapped harmonics is something I’ve had trouble with forever. I just can seem to get the slides and rythym for it. It would be a miracle of angels if you could bless me with your tutelage on this very amazing song from our mutual hero, Edward Van Halen.
Great suggestion! I’m working on some new lessons so that most certainly should be one!
I love how you counted the frets🤣. Good stuff man. Thanks for the video🤙🏾🤙🏾
Yeh man. Playing 37 years and still a noob! Hahaha 🤣
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker at least you remember how long you've been playing. I gotta count that too, as well as thr frets. I laughed because I do the same thing after the 7th fret🤣🤣
@@BogusBananasnLemonPeels glad to know I’m not alone! 😂
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker right? Me too🤣🤣🤙🏾🤘🏾

Great job. Great tone as well. I’m off to play VH.
Nice! Perfect Friday night right there. Have fun and thank you!
Turn it up
Beautiful work on an early Eddie melodic masterpiece. You demonstrated the song so clearly, I might practice this weekend.
Thank you so much. Hope you had time to play!
