I was 13 years old in the summer of '79, was at a record store with my young friends, and a older kid named David put VH II in my hands and said to me "buy it"! I was instantly impressed by the front cover art then flipped it over to the backside and was floored looking at the pictures.. who was that long haired guy with the sexy nurses?!? The guy with the striped guitar, the bass player and drummer guy?! Without knowing anything about VH, I did. Took it home gave it a spin, wore the needle out playing it front to back. It forever changed me.
I have a similar story. My mom was taking me to the record store to buy my first album. I had no idea what to get. The older kids across the street said to get Van Halen, Women and Children First. That was soon followed by AC/DC Dirty Deeds and then Rush Moving Pictures. 😂👍
Love these kind of stories Its like you don’t reallly know what to expect and then they come out and change your life I was 13 in 1981 fair warning your went over me like a tidal wave Ind I been rocking ever since
I had just turned 14, the summer of 79. What's funny is my first memory of hearing this was in my dad's car, as he was driving me to baseball practice to Koch Park. How that memory has stuck with me, is just crazy.
First van Halen experience for me was in my dads old minivan when I was 4 or 5 Eruption came on the radio it must've been 1990 or 1991 and he reached over and shook the crap out of me in rythme to whole song lol I'll never forget it
Great lesson. I love your homemade cord diagrams and tab down to earth and makes me feel like we’re just sitting around the table jammin and you’re sketching out the tune for me. Thanks. Very cool. 👨🎨😎👍
You're welcome man! Glad you like the "vibe" of the channel. I try to make it seem just like you described. Since that's how I learned from my teacher. 😎🤟🏻
One of my favorite songs of all time and one of the first I learned how to play. It is one of the happiest riffs and songs period...never fails to get me in a good mood and has inspired me to noodle into other little riffs and "songs." Thanks Marty.
This sound is one of my favs, Eddie was a genius and truly the king! We miss you Ed. Thanks Marty, gotta grab my guitar and learn this the right way lol, have a great day🤘
I love that album the song is on,the critics said it was their worst album, just because there's a few cover songs? No way,one of their best albums to date marty,RIP eddie,it's been 3 years since you passed yesterday
Damn you rock sir!🤘 thanks for the great lesson and I love the journal written look for the chords. Brain melt thanks. I wish I had teachers like you in middle school and high school for math lol
Love ya Marty! Of all the Van Halen concerts I've been to, Dance the Night Away was always to ending song; with everyone singing along to it. Love this song.
Hey Marty. This is one of my favourite VH tunes. Thanks for the lesson. Just been in the process of moving house this weekend. So I need to catch up with watching your previous couple of vids now that I have a little time. 😊
@Ranch5150SkinWalker things definitely didn't go completely to plan, its finding space to put everything thats the problem. Good thing is that it's a detached house so I can now turn the volume up 🙏
Thanks, Brother. I've felt like a boat without a keel since King Edward passed. You've caused me to get my super strat out and get my tubes hot and ROAR! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks Marty seen EVH Ed in Newcastle 26yrs ago Vanhalen 3 tour made a great effort to be there the biggest thing was Alex's drum kit and best was the mixing desk was nearly as big as half a tennis court was maned by about 18 sound engineers who had all same EVH Caps and uniforms on ? All bands were there checking out his Rig farout of the planet it was Unreal got all albums and magazines 😊 Marty Thanks 😊
Thank you for this lesson, Eddie was a genius and this song proves it. And I love how you write the tab out on a piece of paper and show the image.... that is classic! Never change that. Everything doesn't need modern graphics and shit. I like it old school.
My wife loves this song, I'll be sure l she's out of the house when I practice it lest she change her mind😂. Your manner and teaching style are excellent. 👍
Hey guys! Fractal AX8 with a Friedman BE patch. ml labs Friedman IRs in stereo. I run a stereo delay in probtools. 250 ms left 500 ms right 14% mix 25% feedback 😎🤟🏻🍺
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thank you for the reply Marty. That sounds pretty high tech. Lol. I’ll look into this further. You’ve got a great sounding rig. Thanks again for all the great videos you make. I enjoy every one. I love how you break everything down plain and simple. ✌🏻
When I was young and “cool” 😂 I thought this song was too poppy. I remember a teen band playing this at my Jr. high school dance in 1980. Now years later, I love this song and realize what a gem it is. Fun to play and more approachable for guitarists than a lot of Eddie’s stuff.
Being a musician people are always surprised I say D.T.N.A is my fav tune as it has no solo but it is a song that will always make your soul feel good, like little guitars does too
Killer, Marty! I'm like you - Man I love this tune. Always did - from the very first time I ever heard that opening riff. Man - every time I got the pleasure of hearing something Ed did, for the first time, it was like Christmas Day all over again. That goes for the whole Band. Awesome lesson!
Sounds great and thanks for the video! I just listened to the Van Halen song and it sounds like it is in a key lower than what you are playing though - wonder if Eddie was tuned lower or something? Anyhow thanks for your great channel !!!
GG as always. Keep it up dude! I do have a legitate question. Those yellow T III are awesome but I can’t help bend them after 10 minutes? Lowest I can go is green T III (0.88). I LOVE the sound of yellow T III but can’t get over bending them after first use. Do you find they bend? (Perm bend)
One of my favorites of VH , Im 55 so it brings me back to a special time in my life , got a question i just ordred a mij wolfgang sig , and had debated between kt and frankenstrat replica i see you play , how much diff is there in those to with feel and tone, are those 2 close in the way they play n feel and new member to your chanel glad i found ya
I was just watching this video and had an idea.. The first 2 chords remind me of the intro to KISS’ God Gave Rock & Roll To You II. I think it would be cool if you did a lesson on that. Also, KISS’ Domino would be another good one..
Good lesson but the part right before the tapping solo sounds wrong, its the same set up that happens before each chorus, listen to the isolated guitar track on RUclips, you'll hear it.
Good, except at the end of his great Rhythm Guitar riff there is a quick slide from A quickly back to B. Also Eddie does not finger that odd looking E power chord that way.

What I loved about the song was how the harmonics, in the mix, almost sounded like kettle drums. A calypso vibe.

Thanks for another great lesson Marty! Getting those tapped harmonics down can open a lot of doors on the fretboard.
Killer tone- perfect crunch and reverb/delay. I’ve always done D/A/G/E- then D/G/A.

It really showcases the true guitar pop sensibilities Eddie had. And such a great tone as well. Plus the harmony vocals and groove. Just a classic!
Thank you! I could have never figured this out on my own!
Thanks a ton. Just got the white Wolfgang with the maple neck
Great lesson, thanks

What King Edward did with a 4 chord song was remarkable. A true master at his craft...

Yep Eddie plays 1/4 step flat on the Roth material. I stay I standard.
That Wolfgang sounds awesome man, much better than I’ve heard elsewhere, what are you playing through?
Great tone please how do I find out what your rig is for this sound please😊

Sounds awesome!!! What effects are being used in this video?
What amps/sims were you using for the tones here? Sounds freakin amazing.
I thought it was dancing in the street that Eddie wasn’t big on!
That one too. He disliked both songs.
Your exactly right...he wasn't pleased at all with the whole ablum...
I was just watching this video and had an idea.. The first 2 chords remind me of the intro to KISS’ God Gave Rock & Roll To You II. I think it would be cool if you did a lesson on that. Also, KISS’ Domino would be another good one..

Don’t for get to drop tune the low Eb string. Also slide the 3 string A chord back up to the 3 string B chord for true Van Halen.
I agree. He is missing one chord slide in the second part of the phrase.
Thank you!
Ed complained about doing that song but wow right !!!
@2:57 puppy poppin up
what amp setup are you using to get that sound?
Where have you been?
Delay and settings ?
What killswitch is that?
great
The Wolfgang sounds great, how are you liking this one?
your tone here is fucking gorgeous dude
Thanks bro! I appreciate it, I use a fractal ax8 with the Friedman BE and ML Labs Friedman IRs. 😎🤟🏻
Came here to say this! Friggin sweet!
I’m watching this channel the whole week and actually was thinking that uncle Ben is kind of weird.
What is your dog´s name ?
Thanks for this, I've been playing it wrong. 😂🤦
DTNA is VH the best of!!
Love your dog Van Halen too?😎

Why does everyone skip the bridge?
The Brown Album by Ed , and women and Children first😊😊
Dude , Your Better than Slicked Bread.

i need that ax
My tapped harmonics DO NOT CHIME ----like yours --hi pitched ping is not there --why ?--sounds lower --but yours chimes !
