How To Play Unchained By Van Halen .... Quick Guitar Lesson!

  • In this video I demonstrate how to play the intro/chorus and verse section of the song Unchained by Van Halen. This is one of the most iconic Van Halen songs in their catalogue and was featured on the album Fair Warning. While Fair Warning was not a heavy hitter for top 40 hits it is revered by many guitar players as their favorite Van Halen album due to Eddie's tone and creatity throughout the record. Unchained is a prime example of the raw power and energy that is Van Halen. I hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching and please subscribe!

    Holy Cow. Absolutely amazing. Marty your feel is just crazy good. That Bumble Bee is you, Brother. As always - another killer vid, and lesson. You're not only a great player... but a great teacher too. You've just got a way about you. And I could not agree more. Edward was a wizard, and his leads were magic. But for me... the essence of Edward Van Halen was his song-writing and rhythm playing. The lead work was just the icing on the cake. There will never be another. This song highlights a lot of what he was all about as a musician. Just incredible. I'll be working on this!

    Instead of chugging between the chords, I prefer to pick-scrape the low E string to the left to produce a “cascading downward” sound. Then between the next sequence of chords, I pick-scrape to the right to produce a “cascading upward” sound.

    If you are absolutely unable to drop the E string to D, here's what you can do. for the drop part, simply bar the E and A strings at the 5th fret for the chug chug chug part. It's not quite the same but it will get you through the song. Except for the pre chorus where I'd recommend only playing the upper part and taking a drag off of your smoke at the same time! Cheers!

    Hey Marty. One thing I’ve noticed about how Eddie plays the main verse is he will take his thumb and wrap it up at the top of the neck on the 333-1 and then as well on 555-3. He’s still barring it with his ring finger, but then on 777-5, he plays the whole bar chord (I guess to make it hit harder and larger). It seems like he would hold the chord shape the same the whole time but he doesn’t. He never has, even in 1981. Here a close up of that: ruclips.net/user/shortss2kT25x6tC0?si=MpL5c9XqasK6SeRj

    One question about this guitar…it sounds great but I’ve been on the fence whether to get the Frankie, this one (or the regular striped series), or the Wolfgang Special. I noticed on the EVH site that the listing for the Frankie doesn’t mention a low friction pot and definitely want that on my guitar. But this one you have here sounds huge. Is the Frankie worth the extra money over the other two?

    • @Ranch5150SkinWalker
      @Ranch5150SkinWalker  8 месяцев назад +2

      The striped series and the Frankie sound very close. I like the neck on the Frankie a bit better. Wolfgang sounds different to me. Not sure why. Very mid range and honky in comparison. Having said that, the Wolfgang sounds and plays great. But for whatever reason the Frankie wins the gold medal and the stripes series right beside it.

    • @Sam07989
      @Sam07989 8 месяцев назад

      @@Ranch5150SkinWalker that’s the feeling I get as well and I’ve not been able to play any of the 3. I’ve heard them on here in various forms. I think they all have the same pickup even? The Wolfgang sounds very punchy but to me isn’t quite the sound of the classic VH and does the Hagar era pretty well. While the other two guitars do both eras rather well. I may have to pony up for the Frankie. Is it easier played or it’s more about comfort? Does the Frankie have the low friction pot? It actually doesn’t say that it does on the EVH site. But surely??

    Cool - I was always missing the 5th chug! Like you said, probably a mess up saved on album forever! There is rarely a "5" in rock n roll! I never liked the bumblebee version of the striped series. The original had a black headstock, and is buried with Dimebag. Kinda depressing. The white and black striped series one is the most accurate to the original first album version of the Frankie.

    2:40 "That's a B Flat". Or A#. I've never understood the theory behind how to give one of 2 valid names to a chord. Seems arbitrary AF.
    Also: You said the guitar was shipped in E flat and "I'll have to get one of these".
    So you don't own that one?
    Confuddled.

    • @Ranch5150SkinWalker
      @Ranch5150SkinWalker  7 месяцев назад +2

      If you're just calling out notes it really doesn't matter if you say b flat or a sharp. However, in written music (on a staff) you would say B Flat if you were writing in a key with flats. For example the key of e flat major. You would never use a # on the staff since you are in the key of e flat. It's done this way for continuity. However, if you were in the key of B major you say A # since B major has 5 sharps (on the staff). F# C# G# D# A#. Musicians sight reading would freak out if you wrote a blast on the staff in that key. That's the best way I can explain it. 🤷
