    Your elaboration of Swing in the into is the best single explanation I’ve heard on any Van Halen channel .

      Thanks man! It’s so true though. VH we’re a rock n roll swing band half the time back in the Roth era! I appreciate your comment as always!

    It is important to note that Eddie played the entire track with his ‘58 Flying V. He did not roll his bridge pickup Volume knob down at all for the quiet “La Grange” parts. He simply switched to the Neck pickup with it’s Volume control already rolled down…he then flipped the pickup selector back to the Bridge pickup at full volume for the rest of the song. Eddie used the 5150 guitar to play it live on the 1984 tour, but he used a pedal with it’s Volume rolled down so that he could simply press a button on the pedal with his foot for the quiet parts of the song. It sounded rather thin this way, but it worked well enough. In later live performances on the Roth reunion tours he used the Neck pickup and pickup switch on the Wolfgang guitars to achieve a similar effect to what he did with the ‘58 Flying V on the album.

    "Well, I got bad news for ya.." One of the most honest and correct statements about playing fast in certain instances.

    • @Ranch5150SkinWalker
      @Ranch5150SkinWalker  2 года назад +10

      I think so! I spent years playing slow wondering when the speed was gonna come. And I finally had another teacher tell me to just start playing it fast. Sloppy and all. Push it. Then slow back down. It works! You have to play with the danger and not be scared. That’s what bedroom woodshedding is about! Thanks for the comment! 😎

    • @keithcourneyea1609
      @keithcourneyea1609 2 года назад +2

      Agree. Just take it to the limit when things break down and get sloppy. Then slow down just enough to figure out what’s going on, then, repeat.

    • @jrtme
      @jrtme 2 года назад

      I don’t see why it’s hard to believe he would use the V for those parts. He was very found of the fixed bridge look at all the stuff he did on the destroyer on the first album. Flipping between the bridge and neck with an explorer or a Flying V is easier than a Les Paul. He even started with the switch there with a Ernie Balls and then relocated more to the Les Paul spot on the Peavey and EVH.

      Well teacher was recorded in 84 he was playing Kramer parts since 81 when he destroyed the destroyeder as we called it at the factory about the same time he or rather Paul Unkert built the first 5150 with the original Kramer destroyered neck as far as music man and peavey goes or fender who always made evh as they owned charvel at the time by that time Eddie wasn't concerned with signal strength cause of the solid state pre amps in the amps he switched to he knew damn well how to wire a tone pot it just increased signal to ground and weakened the sound on a all tube Marshall rig

    You’re on the right track.
    Your descending tapping pattern actually begins with an ascending pattern. And it is not repeated. It’s not (12-8-7-5 12-8-7-5)
    It’s actually begins (5-7-8-12-8-7-5) then start at 8 and tap to 12 for the rest of the descend. All other patterns are (8-12-8-7-5). Listen to the isolated track and try it. That part stumped me for years.

    It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing! So true! Another VH tune that seems straight forward, but is way more complex when actually trying to do it. Also, on the album, I believe he's using the Explorer, and switching to the neck pickup for the quiet parts, then hitting the toggle to get to the bridge pickup. He does the same on his more modern versions using the Wolfies.

    pre chorus is incorrect... first part is right.. 2nd part is slide down from 13th fret to 12th the 10th back to 12th. then ADD top 3 strings at 10th back to D G B strings all at 12th. and the descent is 15 chromatic down with 2 hits on the first 4 chords and single hits on the last 4 ending up by backing up to the 9th fret last before going back down to the A chord.

    Actually, I think the 0567 5 7/7 with the bend is actually A string --> 0567 D&G -->5/5 8/8 ->7/7 sliding down from the 8/8 to 7/7. That bend doesn't sound right.

    Why are you tuned down half step?

    • @Ranch5150SkinWalker

      Several reasons. When I brush up on these tunes so I can video a lesson, I have to tune to the recording. Early VH is tuned that way. I learn by ear when I analyze parts so this helps so much.
      My metal cover band plays in e flat so the singer can hit the high notes easier. I keep the Frankie in e flat since I use this guitar with the band.
      E flat also sounds great. I keep several guitars in standard and e flat.

    The tapping at the end of the intro riff is wrong. On the first string is clearly played just once, not twice

      Yeh he ascends up the with the tapping first then descends. I noticed afterward! 😆

    Always start slow and progress with perfect timing. . . 95% of anyone who tells you different just deals with the slop and moves on. Now if he had said that and then played it flawlessly, I wouldn't have said shit but, that's just bad advice man.

      Thanks so much man! It takes a while to do the hand written tabs but I'm old school. That's how I learned so that's how I teach. 😄🙌
