- In this video I demonstrate how to play Poundcake by Van Halen and go over all the cool details. I also use my 'natural' Ernie Ball Van Halen guitar guitar in this video. What an amazing instrument! Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video. This is a great song, and it's fun to play. There are a lot of cool EVH tricks in this tune that will help you learn more about his style and also make your own!

I think one of the most complex Van Halen songs ever written. Marty, you are a genius for getting this song bang on
Thanks so much dude. Glad you liked the video. Great song man!! 🖤🎸
Your lessons are the best ! Don’t change a thing ! Especially the hand written tabs….🎸😎
Thanks so much! I’m glad you like ‘em. Occasionally I get grief in the tabs but overall it’s very supportive. I plan on keeping them. 😎🙌
You’re a relaxing teacher. There’s zero stress and actually it’s nice to unwind watching you teach without even a guitar around. Appreciate your channel.
Wow, thank you!
That song is brilliant!
Once again until you break the stuff down I have no idea how complex it actually is!
Thanks!
Thanks man! Yeh, it. Gets really tricky during that lead. Eddie was a master at what he did. He had his own language. 🥂
Brilliant tutorial of a classic VH song. Thank you, well done!
Thanks so much man. Glad you liked it! 😎

cool tone,,,,,very cool,,, cool guitar tooooooo
Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the awesome lesson! That's always been my favorite style EVH guitar, I love maple necks and the flamed maple looks killer. Man I miss the early 90s lol, what an awesome era of music
Hey man. You’re so welcome. I love the EBMM as well. Such a classy and beautiful guitar. 😎🙌
Amazing lesson!!! Been a huge fan of this song as long as I can think, but I never dared to attempt to play it. Now, I'll start working on it. Thanks for the encouragement.
I love, that you're actually doing it on an Ernie Ball Music Man. Sounds great!
Also, I love the handwritten tabs!
Thanks you so much man! Have fun!! 🎸🎵
Love that guitar and the lesson, Thanks as always! Have a great weekend!
Thank you 🙏. You do the same. 🤟🏻🥂
The rhythm under the solo is nasty A F 🤟🤟🤟 Hail to the King!!!
Yeh man! So fun to play over 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Another great lesson Marty. Thanks
Thanks, great playing!
Very impressive!
Thanks for making this video!
You’re welcome Phillip!
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker 👍
Marty You are a badass. Thanks for braking all of this down for us my brother 🙏
Thanks Michael! I am happy to do it for ya! I just hope every time I do it alright. Thanks for the support man! 😊
That guitar looks and sounds amazing!
Thank you Marty. This is one of my favorites from Eddie. Big Thank You 💯🙏
You’re welcome man! One of my favorites too! 😎🤟🏻
Awesome lesson!
Dang, GREAT LESSON, man! Just subbed and belled as well. Thank you!
Thanks man! I appreciate it. Thank you for checking out the channel as well! 🥂
Solid!!!!
Excellent lesson thx marty
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching. 😎🙌
Awesome
Thank you 🙌
Very cool stuff Marty thanks 🤘👍👏
You’re welcome my friend. 😎🥂
Great lesson as usual. Love that guitar. The muting tips are as important as the chords. Only thing from Ernie I can afford is a set of his strings. Keep ‘em coming Marty. Thanks
My favorite Rock album ever!
Van Halen at it’s greatest!
You know what Marty all I hear is bass and the chorus in the background during the solo.
Uh oh, uh oh oh
What you play sounds badass and I’ve heard this awesomeness in every VH tune I could isolate.
Not this one, im pissed!
Im listening to the record at the time you say and im not hearing that!
Those are some of the best nuggets too that people like you bring attention too.
Honestly some of his rhythm playing could be enough for an entirely new song!
Jump and Right Now are examples of interesting rhythm!
Awesome!
Im going to keep looking
I love this album too! It’s got so many great songs! The tour was tremendous too. 😎
Thanks Marty For U.C.K. is my favorite Sammy era. Recording. Thanks for sharing the love my brother 🙏
You’re welcome man! I love the album too. It’s HUGe. And I love the EBMM tones. 🥂
The versions on Live Right here & now are great to play along with...really great way to hear how to pull it off live. I'd say your version is 99.8% accurate. Use your ears & find a way to make it work for you. Thanks man.
Thanks man! Nitsnsonhard to teach (and learn/pickup) all the nuances. And over the years you hear different stuff! Plus you get used to playing it a certain way. But it’s still fun and great music. 😎☮️
There is a really sick tapping lick on the live album version (RHRN) which would be cool to learn. Its about 40 seconds in.
Sweet
Thanks!
Great lesson man keep posting these lessons
I would love to see a lesson on I’m the one that song has a certain groove swing to it that Eddie does effortlessly anyway awesome lesson as always
I’m trying to learn as many Van Halen songs as possible , you are making it happen thank you 🎸🤘
That’s awesome man! This is a good refresher for me too. And everyone has been so cool on the channel I’m blown away. I will work on I’m the one. That song kind of terrifies me. I know a lot of it. I need to tackle that Damn solo. Hahah 😎🙌
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker
You’re awesome man thank you so much keep rocking 🤘🤘🎸🎸
Amazing lesson! Your comment on learning the rhythm behind the lead before trying to learn the lead is eye opening. Still waiting for a video from you on dialing in a VH tone on the Axe FX. You have that tone down and would love to know how you achieve that.
Thank you! Glad you like it man. Would you like to see a video of the settings and what I’m doing within Ax Edit? That would be a pretty easy one to do and probably some other folks would like it as well.
Absolutely I would appreciate that too. The best guitar lessons channel on RUclips by far. The only channel I have the bell turned on.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker AxeFXII here, I would love to see your settings as well. Thanks for the lessons!
Yes that would be great to see it with Axe Edit.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker yeah even though I don’t have an Axe I’d still like to see it, and you always have killer tones either from your axe fx or your amps on the deck . Your tone here would be a good base tone for many people to start with I’d imagine it sounds like Eddies tone from the era sans the de tune it’s probably incredibly close to his dry signal on that album, but I’m just hearing it through phone speakers
Love this song man... Now I have a weekend learning project! Thanks ya' Rat Bastard! LOL! 😅
Enjoy my friend!!!!!
The most underrated album IMO. “Runaround” is one my fave VH songs, would love to see you break that one down.
I love Runaround. That’s been in my radar for a couple weeks. 🙌😎
Great lesson Marty. Got to fire up the amp and give this another try!
Enjoy my friend. Thank you! 😎🥂
I think too many people overlook Ed’s rhythm playing. He was a fantastic rhythm player as much as he was a lead player. I love his rhythms it might be my favorite part of Van Halen because he didn’t just chunk on barre chords all the time he could and did when it fit the song and he had a funky sense of timing that at least for me is hard to get a feel for and make it sound right like the killer riff in the chorus of Unchained who would’ve ever thought of putting a riff like that right there. If you’re a guitar player and haven’t paid attention to Eddie’s rhythm playing you are cheating yourself. Few players are masters of rhythm and lead, I got Eddie, Dime, Jimi, and maybe SRV, complete players who’s rhythms can be just as interesting and challenging to play right as their lead work.
Very very true! Eddie’s solos sounded great in part because of all the great rhythms and changes. He really understood swing and popular music. His foundation in rhythm was deeply rooted and complex for sure. 🥂
Have you done a 5051 breakdown yet? Great track and trickier than it sounds. His rhythm chops were incredible. Can’t believe I skipped out EVH when I was kid. Some guy called Nuno Bettencourt had me looking the other way I guess. Better late than never! Don’t worry, I won’t ask you to do a Get the Funk Out solo lesson. ;)
Hey man, yeh. I did 5150. It’s back a little bit on the video list but it’s there! Thanks for checking out the channel! 😎🤟🏻
This lesson really helped me figure this song out. I’ve been stuck for months. Thanks! Any chance of doing a lesson like this one for Black And Blue?? I need help! 😂🤘
Awesome man! Yes. I want to do Black And Blue very soon. And Cabo. 😎🥂
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Pefect! Can’t wait
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker
Black n blue and Cabo my favorites off OU812
Great job 👍 the tone is FANTASTIC! What pick-ups are in guitar? What amp are you going through? It sounds incredible
I had a EBMM signature and sold it when I was going through a divorce.. I swear this is something special about those pickups??
@@jimmyjames7946 yeah I recall seeing something about people wanting to buy the pickups out of Eddies EBMM but they were only available in those guitars and the pickups alone bring stupid money if you found someone willing to part one out, but yeah there’s some mojo about those pickups, however there’s a couple videos on RUclips that tell you the next closest Dimarzio production pickups you could get and the only one I can think of right now is the Andy Timmons AT1 or a Tone Zone is supposed to be close to the the EVH EBMM bridge PU in fact I think Ed had two pickups that he couldn’t decide between (he was always trying different pickups) and I think it was Andy Timmons who actually chose from the two Ed had it narrowed down to. Anyway they say an AT1 or Tone Zone gets you close in the bridge. There’s a company that makes a couple good EVHish pickups called Pariah if you want to something besides Dimarzio, they are a little more expensive but they aren’t as ridiculous as some boutique PU brands are.
Appreciate the info! Thank you..I have hear the paria pound cake pick up is amazing?? Only demos I could find on you tube have a lot of effects on them and I can't hear the true tone..
I was wondering where the pick slide was after the drill intro.
Sound like it comes in on the 3 after the first full bar of drums. 👍
For as many guitarists EVH influenced (read:ripped him off) Paul Gilbert must be honored Eddie chose to use his drill trick.
Didn’t Paul use the drill with picks on it and played with it vs using as a sound effect? Or did he do both?
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker yeah he had picks on it....but he called the sound the "dentist from hell". He actually had the old style drills made for him because the new ones stop immediately. The old ones slow down gradually.
@@craigpoole2602 yeh I remember Eddie or Paul talking about how the Makita’s slowed down and the new ones just stop abruptly so they won’t work for the purpose. Lol
I’ve thought about heading to the local pawn shops to look for an old Makita. And stripe it! 🤟🏻
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker the funny thing is as a guitar tech/repairman/builder (I refuse to use the term luthier) I've used an electric screwdriver to check out pickups since the 80s. It was just more fun to make gawdawful noises than just hitting a string. Good luck....it shouldn't be too hard to find one. If ya do find one you must do a video on painting it up.
@@craigpoole2602 “luthier” is so old school sounding. It always makes me think of some old bearded wizard who carved the guitar and neck from ancient raw lumber lol.
Please play of white lion little fighter a tutorial complete of this song you play excelent
That rig whips ass. Always wanted the ernie ball version now they cost 4 or 5 k
Thanks man! I was very fortunate to get these a long time ago. Crazy prices in the EBMM now!
Is this song in the key of E then changes to the key of F# for the guitar solo? The guitar solo clearly in the key of F#.
I miss Dave Mr. Vintage Music
I enjoyed Dave too. I miss Eddie the most. 😕
Are we in half step?
Hey man. Are you in Nashville by any chance?
Yesireeee
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Rad! We should grab a beer and talk guitar/Van Halen. Maybe even an in person lesson? Loved the videos where you went through the magazine interview from ‘97 too! I was curious and looked up the Suddenly Susan theme, and it’s just a two guitar arrangement of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. Interesting that a guitar mag would take the time for something like that, but hey, it was the ‘90s lol.
Thanks Marty Halen I have ever lesson stored working on somebody get me a doctor the correct way thankyou we're on the lead do you do Humans Being?
Thanks for watching man! I need to get Humans Being and dissect it. I promise it will appear.
Bro nice but u missed the harmonics on the E n B string for the first intro 😊
Great stuff man where's the drill
I almost brought out my wired orange black and decker but decided … nahhh. Lol 😎
What's the dog's name? I saw him stroll by.... lol
He can’t resist! His name is Buki. He’s half German Shepherd and Half Siberian Husky.
5:12 - that part of the riff should be up an octave.
Why did they dub in so much when they could have had Sammy play a lot of that other stuff🤔😊
英語わからないけど頑張る
Cant read scribble
Sorry man! At least I cover it slow just in case my chicken scratch is bad
Sorry, I don’t know this guy and have nothing against him. But this is not a good lesson for this song
Great job 👍 the tone is FANTASTIC! What pick-ups are in guitar? What amp are you going through? It sounds incredible
Hey man. Just running Fractal Ax8 with a Freidman BE patch and a cool 4X12 Ir into pro tools. I added a splash of chorus, delay and reverb in pro tools. For ambience.
Those are probably the EVH EBMM Dimarzio that weren’t available to buy separate, the only way you’re getting them is to buy an original VanHalen EBMM or find a set for sale second hand that someone will surely live to regret separating from their guitar and if you find any of those pickups for sale they will cost you a bunch. Supposedly the AT 1 or Tone Zone is close, at least that’s what they say.
@@brandonjackson5865 yeh they were supposed to be custom wound EVH …. Later to be produced in the high end Axis line. Eddie could not take them to Peavey. They were owned by EBMM
