My friend was on board that plane. My classmates and I were only 12 at the time, it was horrifying for us to find out. She was on her way to Singapore for new years but instead this happened. Her entire family was with her on that flight, that was the only shred of comforting information I had - that she wasn’t alone in her last moments.
Her grandmother still comes by my school almost everyday. Before she and her brother died, her grandma used to pick them and their cousin up daily. Now, instead of picking up 3 grandkids, she picks up 1. I can never and will never imagine the loss and emptiness she feels. My whole class calls her “bobo”, the indonesianized version of ‘grandmother’ in Mandarin Chinese. In a way, we’re all her grandkids. That can never fill up the whole that my friend and her entire family left, but I hope that gave her some kind of comfort over the 6 years I saw her there.
My classmates and I are 18 now and her birthday just passed this September. I hope that wherever she is, she can still celebrate it. She lives on through us all, in our memories and hearts; you won’t be forgotten, Kath.
Rip Kathleen, Grayson, and fam. We miss you. ❤️
Heartbreaking. Sorry for your loss, and best wishes. RIP all who passed
sorry for your loss man stay strony

That was a really touching tribute, Aiko. Thanks.
So sorry to hear this. It makes you appreciate waking up everyday. It's great that you stay in touch with the memories.

When flying an aircraft, you never ASSUME anything, you either KNOW, or you ASK. Whenever I was flying with my instructor we had a very clear dialect which goes along the lines (Instructor) "your airplane" (me): "my airplane " or (Instructor) "I have control" (me) "you have control" this simple procedure stops one pilot pulling up while the other tries pulling down. The golden role "Aviate, navigate, communicate, Especially, when the unexpected happens. This is another sickening case where an accident was totally preventable. Nice one as always TFC
I agree it just seems unthinkable to switch something especially when you don’t know what the outcome would be . That’s awful chance to take .
Yeap, those smallest communications are critical. I was a PIC on a Piper and on the right seat was much more experience pilot. I did most of the flying except on final, this guy started grabbing yoke pretty hard, so I pretty much let him do it. It was before I watch most of ACIs and didn't know no more than what's taught in school. No one clearly said my control, and soon I experienced the hardest landing. Right seat guy said, he didn't land, and I said I wasn't flying. About a year later before he left country, he confessed he made that bad landing.
@@turboromy Good old CRM (Crew Resource Management.) That's what it's all about matey
@@WayneM1961 Exactly..... I did learn CRM but it wasn't emphasized or maybe I took it lightly. Like some says, I agree all pilots must be required to watch all ACI episodes.
The “I have flight controls” was one of the first things I leaned in ground school, even on my introductory flight I was just naturally doing that. That’s what strikes me as odd about this crash in particular, that lack of communication.
My friend from Malang on that plane , we planning meet up together in Singapore but 😭
Rest In Peace
And when did you plan the meet?
What a sad way to end 2014
I‘m sorry😣
My condolences
Chillass Penny you’re so disrespectful. Disgusting.
I really love the signature "dog bark" sound of the Airbus when the flaps move before take off. Such realism there.
LoL, that what I heard every time flow with Air Asia. i taught that aircraft a bit broke
Yeah that was a good addition to the video. I always fly airasia. I hear that bark very often so it makes the story extra immersive. It's just like our everyday flights. We hear the same thing on the flights but for just this one time nobody reached the destination.
@Wewe Gombell I remember there is a dog unit to goes around near the runway to chase birds to make them fly away. Or atleast i say to prevent bird strike
The "dog bark" is from one of the systems doing a self test called the PTU. The flaps have a more constant sound
Especially just speed the video to 2x you can hear dog bark. I was about to comment that but again it's a tragic video so I didn't want to put it here. RIP all passengers of that aircraft.
I am speecless. Those new shots before departure (and of course the rest of the video) are just amazing! Thank you for your hard work, I appreciate it!
You should mainly thank the x plane devs
But... that is P3D
How does he make them like what graphics program? So amazing with the plane details and cockpit controls etc
sazzlepop
No it’s a flight sim and all those things you see are made by professional devs
sazzlepop He uses a game - XPlane or P3D so he just records the screen, but I admire how much effort he puts into making these videos, he even uses the ground service vehicles
Small mistakes can be so deadly. Can imagine how those people felt diving to their death at such height and speed. RIP
It’s worrying most of the crashes appear to be pilot error and in an emergency end up crashing the plane. This seemed to be a minor issue, but time and again pilots do not follow procedure and make matters worse. Automation is great when it works, but pilots appear clueless when they have to fly the plane.
auto-pilot is making them all lazy and terrible - anyone who thinks automation doesn't bring with it other inherent psychological problems is naive
Rest In Peace all those that expected to be in Singapore that day

passengers were not aware they were entering their coffin when they boarded that flight. how tragic.
Tragic. What haunted me in the video is when it's been mentioned that most of the passengers were families with young children. I just lost it and wept.
I always think that when I watch these. Not only that they actually paid for their own death, set in stone the moment they put their credit card details into the website. At that moment they were already dead unless they missed the flight for some reason. Trippy and tragic.
It would be the adults screaming and shouting, children would only get scared seeing their parents reaction. I would try to stay calm for my kids in that situation, just hold them and pray.

As a Frenchman I feel pretty offended that both AF447 and this flight were taken down by my fellow countrymen’s tendency to nose up the damn plane for no reason.
As a Frenchman, I concur. The sole mention of Flight 447 is enough to make me cry, even eleven years after this fateful accident. My fear of planes stemmed from this tragedy.
It's not your fault. Shared nationality isn't a reasonable basis for blaming other people in what someone else did. I don't think that pulling nose up is a "French" trait. It's a result of insufficient training of modern pilots who are basically "plane operators" rather than the pilots.
@@moisemensah8233 Unfortunately, mine too.
as a person who has soldered professionally for over 20 years it offends me that a dodgy solder joint and some shitty inspection resulted in this. It really bugs me because it's so damn easy to pick up on and fix!
So true
my friend was in that flight with her mother.. she later found almost a month after the crash. Rest in Peace.
The incompetence is astonishing. Imagine pulling a breaker in your car while driving?
Yea unfortunately south east Asia doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to training their pilots. I lived in Bali for a year and hated the idea of taking Air Asia or lion air.
Modern Day Jay I'm a native, I have been using Adam Air, Lion Air and Air Asia Indonesia ti travel around so far. For super short haul flights, Lion Air is okay, but if you wanted to fly a bit longer, for noe Garuda Indonesia is one of the few Indonesian airliners that I think is safe and comfortable enough
@@ixm2unvrz how about Batik Air?
Modern Day Jay Singapore is probably the only exception in the whole of SEA
Not comparable, there are breakers that are fine to reset in this airbus.
14:12 How are the pilots not to blame here? Literally the moment they took control of the plane all hell broke loose. On top of the fact the captain playing maintenance man should never be resetting the circuit breaker mid flight. Plane was fine, humans crashed that beautiful A320!
I agree, however this was both mechanical and pilot error. Captain got inpatient, but when he tried to take control he didn't hold the button on his sidestick long enough to gain control. However, the RTLU system was malfunctioning.
@@Chard2134 I agree that there were multiple faults but in the end it was pilots that did fly a working plane to the ocean. The pilots and maintenance crew were skipping rules a lot which caused the initial computer fault that caused to plane to fly in "alternate law" or "direct law" mode which you can think as "no auto-brake" and "no auto-steering" in a driving game on a console. A competent pilots should be able to fly the plane without such aids.

Kudos to you for this absolutely amazing videos! I'm a cabin crew and hearing such realistic PAs, aircraft sounds, etc make me think I'm really there, experiencing it all! Thanks for your commitment ❤️🙏
Root problem... pilots that cannot fly an airplane. They spend thousands of hours entering waypoints into the computer that flies the plane.
yes.. after the aircraft banked left the FO turns the stick hard to the right because he was too panicked about the situation, and he got spatial disorientation too, which cost him 162 lives including himself
ws 12 was the opposite with Air France flight 447 where the first officer was trying to climb when the second officer was trying to descend. They cancel out and cause a stall
Spend effort for ridiculous mistake for flight crew
The CA was a former fighter pilot. I wouldn't assume that he couldn't fly.
transformersbannana umm no. Sidestick disagree doesnt cause a stall. The stall was caused by the FO pressing the sidestick priority button.
The graphics in this video (especially those clouds in the last minutes of flight climbing )tells how passionate you are ❤️ your channel is the best flight channel 👍🏼
Another phenomenal video from The Flight Channel - thank you for showing us in such simple yet accurate and easy-to-understand terms what the sequence of events was prior to this tragic and avoidable disaster. I'd always wondered what the cause of this AirAsia8501 crash was. Thank you!
Great explanation of this disaster, as always I thank you for your time. Can't get over how realistic the ground vehicles and people boarding the plane look.
This is exactly like the Air France flight where the pilots managed to lose control of the aircraft at high altitude after the auto-pilot had been disengaged, how hard is it to read the artificial horizon...ffs.
Exactly. Incompetence.
Was going to be my exact comment including ffs, frustrating when they can't fix their own mistakes
Jeremie Ragois One has to wonder whether there are inherent aerodynamic design flaws in the A-320’s and A-330’s which make them unstable at high altitude or whether its just a systemic issue with pilot’s being trained to rely on the automation in the cockpit.
@@mvfc7637 high altitude coffin Conner. Low margin between an overspeed and a stall. It's there with any aircraft flying at high altitude. Less room for errors
Pilot Derrick understood, however why did the aircraft roll to the left as soon as the flight controls went into alternate law??? Was it because the trim now had to be set manually or were those settimgs unaffected by the disabling of the autopilot??
What a fantastic production. The close ups and ominous and sad music in the background during pushback lend to the drama of the passengers going to their deaths, sealed in their flying tomb. Just a fantastic simulation that puts the viewer next to and onboard that tragic flight. Awesome presentation.

I remember this flight. I had to fly over the Java Sea just a couple months after this happened. I watched that map on the in-flight TV so hard - I was praying that we would make it over the Java Sea. It was scary, but I can't imagine how scary it was for those in this flight.
I am from Indonesia, very grateful to the admin for making this video, you are very reminiscent of the incident that involved our family first:)
So many pilots lost when the computer quits flying the plane. Old WW2 pilots were the best.
Now we should call them "operators" not "pilots". Good old Windows error remedy: reset computer.
That they were. We had one as we flew to Chicago and got caught between two supercells that were trying to merge into one. At 39,000 we hit turbulence, and as we bounced up and down for about 10 minutes, nobody knew how fast a plane could really fall. THen we found out, and the amazing thing was that he warned us that there was going to be on "hell of a bump!" I didn't know it at the time, but a plane can fall as fast as 15 times terminal velosity. We had already taken a pretty bad tumble about 20-30 seconds before this one, but we never anticipated anything like what we felt. When you lose consciousness, praying to God that we don't feel it if we hit the ground, I was glad to come to with my Mom right next to me. We all had ear and tummy troubles after that one, and the turbulence took part of our landing gear, but we landed safely in Chicago around 20 minutes later. We won't ever forget that 6,000 foot plunge. I do remember the plane rocking forward and back when it all started, but I still get nervous to this day when I fly. I was so glad we had that pilot, because I don't know if anyone would have done as well today. Of course, we have much better radar, too, so that's a plus. That was in June, 1971.
Sorry for the errors, too, but I tried to correct them, and my screen-reading software isn't allowing me to find and correct anything, and I use the keyboard. Hopefully I can get things squared away with the next software download. Thanks.
Joseph Jakubec absolutely agree. The pilots now retired flew without all the automation, when there was an issue, they were very comfortable manually flying the plane. Those guys are gone now for the most part. May have some ready to retire pilots of that caliber. Wait till their gone...
Joseph Jakubec I’ve been saying this for years. When I get on an airplane, I wanna see ‘ol sparky up in the pilots seat with his nam tattoos and a glass of whiskey.
Heather stubbs you lost consciousness?? I’m so glad you guys landed safely. What type of balance/stomach issues do you still suffer from?
As soon as the plane starts going down, "Power back to idle. Roll wings level using artificial horizon. Pull back to nose level. You MUST fly the aeroplane!" Panicking does not help. Training does. I flew with the RAF. Their training saved my life. It changes you when you nearly die.
THE FAA needs to require these airliner pilots for strict MANUAL FLYING SKILLS UNDER DURESS at least once every 5 thousand miles or 5 years or whichever comes first. SOMETHING to keep them on their toes. I'm seeing this common theme over and over. One little bump in the road and these pilots flip the hell out and suddenly none of them are on the same page! It's unnecessary!
Love the new camera angles during taxi and the added sound. Most of these are pretty sad but that adds a lot more emotion.

Pilots are as trusting of auto-pilot as Tesla drivers are. It's called "Auto Pilot" for simplicity, but is actually an ASSIST. It can't do everything.
@@keqingsshoes2230 I get what you're saying. And I'm not saying that it's easy, just that planes didn't always have all these assists and older pilots have recognizable skill, even without all the extra assists.
Simply a human skills could be applied. Do not rely on just what programs does have. With using through your brilliant mind is always be a better. You are about to controlling the situations which is whatever it happens and any scenarios that possibly occurring. Conquering the quest.
True. The Tesla Autopilot can’t even do everything too like a plane’s Autopilot
It's an Airbus, so it's actually an Autopilot. On Boeing aircraft it is an assist.
As a pilot I can say that the autopilot does everything mate, we just have to monitor it and simply fly the plane when it disengages, which in this case the pilots failed to do for some reason.

Attention to the details of maintenance would have spared the pilot from obvious frustrations of resetting the limiters. However there is a flight rule that I was taught. In the air do not fix a problem, just reset and then solve on the ground.
"The final report ... did not specifically conclude that pilot error did cause the crash."
Sure. Switching off vital systems because a technician on ground once did so and then not being able to fly the plane manually is no one's error. Just a fateful chain of events..
That's crash investigation speak for saying that if everything had worked perfectly, the autopilot had taken the plane to the final airway and there wouldn't have been a crash. There was multiple failures in the chain of events but the pilots were the final problem - they couldn't fly the plane without computer assistance even though they supposedly had training for that, too.
I think It's better for you to just read the full report..

@@peterguirguess853 What a retarded, aggressive comment.
Having watched more of these than I can count a nagging conclusion haunts me. In so many cases an experienced, calm and knowledgeable pilot should certainly be able to recover the aircraft before disaster strikes. Sadly it seems as if too many of the so-called pilots are only able to "fly" the plane if all the systems are functioning as designed. It's somewhat akin to painting by numbers. If the numbers are altered or removed from the equation they are unable to actually fly the plane. If that's true then flight schools need to get back to basics and teach pilots how to fly, not just turn knobs and flip switches. It is tragic that so many people die needlessly, not only in this flight but so many others. May those departed souls rest peacefully in eternity.
Absolutely.
You're right. It is unconscionable.
This is what I was thinking all along
There are so dependant to the systems and forgotten how to manually fly the plane
I don't understand why the captain didn't take control of the flight. When your co-pilot has obviously lost his trolley, there's little point yelling out instructions to him.
In too many of these videos, doofus pilots get people killed. Before, I used to be scared of mechanical faults in the aircraft. Now, I'm afraid of idiots in the cockpit. 😠
I've watched dozens of these videos and only in two cases have I applauded the pilots. One crew saved the plane, the other could not, but they fought bravely, intelligently, and professionally all the way to the ground; the loss of the aircraft was not their fault.
Respect to all the good pilots out there, but curses on all the incompetent clowns who get people killed.
@@sionnachrealta5534 Incorrect. First generation passenger jets were flown with the aid of gauges and sensors, which assisted the pilot's intensely practiced and acquired flying skills. Under nearly all circumstances all aircraft can be manually flown, if the pilot has been trained accordingly.
This is the concern - the industry has become too reliant on modern AI automation and when it fails, or flight conditions are outside of AI parameters, most pilots today have only a textbook concept of how to fly the plane. They are trained to operate flight control systems, not how to actually fly an aircraft. In fact, most advanced aviation training utilize cockpit hoods or curtains in the final stages of training to restrict the pilot's field of vision so that he only sees instrumentation and not the visual cues and sensory perceptions within and external to the aircraft.
Instead of relying on actual flying skills, which are limited, they try to solve problems by overriding or "outsmarting" the flight control systems. Tragically that mindset leads to many airline disasters. Needless to say, there are conditions where no amount of training or flying skills can alter the ultimate outcome, such as catastrophic mechanical failures. Nevertheless there are examples of highly competent and experienced pilots avoiding disasters, relying solely on their actual flying skills.
The core principles of flying, in the order of importance: aviate, navigate, communicate. Nowadays the term "pilot" is more akin to someone who understands the basic principles of flight and is trained to operate complex flight control systems.

@AJ Lorenzo Same, when I saw Air Asia’s business class I wanna go with Air Asia but when the crash happened I *_changed my MIND_*
They still have the best pilot training for budget carriers in Asia, far better than Scoot or JetStar Asia.
Side stick, side stick, side stick. Pilot inputs cancel first officer inputs.
Stupid design leads to dead people.
They should have fixed the fault with the plane
Imagine having to hand fly your aircraft; every commercial pilots biggest fear. I remember one pilot in another emergency telling ATC that he was having to hand fly the aircraft like it was an abnormal thing.....🙄
@BLACKMONGOOSE13
That's the problem today...unlike 25 years ago or more most pilots are just not skilled enough at manually flying the planes, I think things like this weren't nearly as likely to happen because most pilots then had good manual flying skills.
watershed44 Maybe not „most“. But surely „many“. Or at least, many more than nowadays.
Totally agree with you on that. Sully evidently knew how too. And United 232 in Sioux city Iowa.
Then fly Boeing, my dad had flies a decent percentage of the time
D.B Plastering
That might be true, but the odds are going to favor worse safety since many commercial pilots today are nothing more than computer
jockeys, and aren't really good pilots.
It's just crazy how the smallest deviation from normal conditions can set in motion a chain of events that end in disaster
Hey Mr Flight Chanel man, if you're reading this, this is my favourite editing, especially the music while the tragedy is happening, I felt like I was a passenger on that plane
Rest in Peace for all passengers and crews onboard. Really hope that this kind of disaster won't ever happen again.
"TheFlightChannel", add in the video's name: "Realistic version"
Wow so cool the plane sounds & voices are even so realistic. A fan of this channel!
Love love this channel thank you for your hard work!
Did you guys realize that every year when it ends or start there is always a tragedy

To everyone reading this I hope y’all have a safe flight and not think about horror stuff like this and people gotta understand pilots can’t do everything impossible but it’s heartbreaking that those people in that plane did not deserve to lose their lives on that plane. May they’ll rest in peace
Don’t tell me what to think about my flights. Keep your inspirational bullsht to yourself. It’s my flight, not yours.
Your channel is really great👍🏻. Thanks for the info🙏🏻
I remember this crash clearly as I learned of it while on a layover in KL and it was shown on one of the tv's at the airport. Scariest moment as I was also about to board an AirAsia flight that time. RIP to all on that flight.😢
Everytime a big air plane incident occurs like that Ukrainian one the otherday i always note to myself " ahh ill catch that one on the flight channel to see what happened"
I hapen to know someone who was a pastor for the church of those 41. They ran services for a month maybe( cant exactly remember) at or near the airport and i attended one of those services. The mood was just depressing, it was hard being in the room with all the greif in it and you can feel it. I hope we never have to see anything like that again.
You did good job for this video.i can understand any step from that accident.thank you for your good work.appreciate 🙏
such a well done video!!! one of your best!!
It all started when pilot let his emotions control him and he went off the chain. Oh yeah, nice production work, Flight Chännel.
Typical Frenchman. They’re like PMSing women with their emotions

wow, the flight attendant announcement is perfect
Excellent work with attention to details. I am in awe of your talent.
This vid is full of effort! TFC actually used an audio of an Indonesian English accent! Great job.
This is so similiar to Air France 447 flight! The captain shoud have said “I HAVE CONTROL” and the disaster would have been avoided. Definetly pilot error.
Mario Citino I thought the same thing.. i literally said out loud (to no one), “Welp.. I know how this will go”
It really was pathetic. That FO should never have been in the cockpit if he didn't understand how to use the stick.
But the investigations did say that by resetting the circuit breaker (still a pilot error), it turned off multiple flight controls, so even if the captain Had Control, we’ll never know some control might still not function.
That captain Bonin should have never gotten that license...smh
Aircraft: Oh, rudder travel limiter system has failed.
ECAM: *hAvE yOu tRiEd tO SwItCh iT oFf ThEn oN???*
Also Captain: enough with this
There's really no use in using upper case and lower case letters, while typing sentences. It looks ridiculous.
So, it's very simple - it SHOULD look ridiculous. It's the only reason I'm using that.
@@MishutkAviation You accomplished your goal. RIDICULOUS.
Great. I'm very happy now.
These are so well done. Thank you for telling these stories
