      You can often times use chalk spray to get around that. I personally found the bigger issue with phtogrammetry that all of the packages require nVidia GPUs and those cards tend to be very expensive compared with other options. I haven't looked in a couple years, so maybe that's changed, but it gets tiresome having everything be geared to CUDA even though there is an open standard available.

    It is amazing how scanners have evolved from early days, plus how the software is able to interpret scan dots to rebuild an image. I am curious about the unnamed bug you found. What was it and did Creality fix it?

    Hi
    What about measurements? What about inside scans?
    I'd like to use some affordable equipment for finding the right saddle for a horse. The saddle-fitter - I’m sure - already have something like this, but a horse changes, and a fitting saddle is very important. To scan the back of a horse is simple, but I'd like to have measurements. Furthermore, I wonder if it is possible to do an inside-scan of the saddle, less important but, if possible, with measurements there too?

    Must the person rotate so you can scan, or can you walk around the person to scan? Seems like you should be able to walk around the person, but it could be that the camera uses background to triangulate the image, so maybe we need to keep the camera semi stationary.

    • @gabbermaikel
      @gabbermaikel Месяц назад

      you can just walk around it. Never done a person, but i have done all kinds of other things and i rarely rotate the thing im scanning, im walking around it most of the time. Its easier to walk around a car for example then to turn the car round. And that is the case for most things i scan.
      I did use a diy rotary table for some smaller parts, works nice as wel, but its not like the scanner uses anything from the background for tracking at all. Now on a bought rotary table some have some tracking features so that you can scan objects where it would lose tracking pretty easy. But since my scanned objects tend to have plenty of things to track on its not needed.

    as Revopoint Pop2, Range and Range 2. Since I pretty much scan medium
    to large object, which makes the Pop2 basically a paper weight
    The Ranges scanners do a better job
    on a single rotation, but they are no
    match for when it comes to being
    and to scan multiple rotations of
    an object. The Ferret scan black objects without scanning sprays or
    switching to a dark mode.
    The Ferret is also very forgiving for
    shaky and or missed spots on a scan.
    The only issue I have with the Ferret
    is that it was advertised for small to

    I’ve heard this scanner often works better in the second mode - the surface image mode (?). How have you found that mode? (If you know what I’m talking about). Or is it just surface image superimposed on the 3D model to make up for the shortcomings regarding fine detail? - looks that way. So better for 3D imaging than 3D printing, unless you just need the major / rough details and intend to work on the model in CAD or z-brush. Sounds great to me for the price - I guess some people expect the moon on a stick for 50cent. Mind you though - you’re getting some great results with minimal post scan editing I see

    • @MakingStuff
      @MakingStuff  20 дней назад +1

      It has 3 modes. Sometimes I have to try all 3 to find the best one that works. It just depends on the shape and color of the item and how well it reflects IR light. Creality has fixed some of the bugs in the software since the video was made, but it can still be buggy at times.

However to me it does seem that it would have its uses and work well for some applications. I have a number of ideas in which i think it could be a super useful scanner for me (having it work within its limitations).
    My question is , if you use a smartphone to scan, can you export a .stl or .obj file directly to your computer- or perhaps send the file via wetransfer or bluetooth, and completely bypass having to use the creality software on laptop or PC?

Anything going outside of that spectrum will quickly fail because of the weak lasers this device has, small capturing frame and crappy software. The only notable scanners from Creality are Otter and maybe Raptor but they cost a lot more. Unfortunately the competitors like Revopoint aren't much better but at least their Range model solves the small frame issue for cheap. I have seen crime shows that use 3d scanners to record a scene.. Just curious about how they compare to 3d modeling scanners as a comparison. Probably an apples to oranges thing but seems like that could be interesting..

    • @glenfoxh
      @glenfoxh 4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, it likely be an apples to oranges thing. The type of 3d scanner used at a crime scene would most likely be something like the Creality CR Scan Raptor or Creality CR-Scan Otter. Or even something better than those.
      One issue however is, the police and crime investigators, don't make a lot. They don't work for someone like 007 would. So whatever they get, likely is not top of the line, like those used by the devs of the game Gran Turismo had used to scan cars into their games. Those cost a fortune.
      This is however, is just my own personal guess.

    • @vinceaaron8921
      @vinceaaron8921 3 месяца назад +1

      definitely apples to oranges. this one is more comparable to manufacturing that will do quality control. the one on crime show is more of a survey instrument. the manufacturing one can get to 100th mm where as the crime show one is about 1mm just due to laser diameter. i have been using terrestrial laser scanners 17 years in industrial setting doing asbuilts and the advances in speed and software is mind blowing. something that would have taken +4 hours to scan can be done in 8 minutes now and the software now makes post processing much easier.

    The coloring in 3D scans is incredibly misleading, as they always enhance the object, adding all of the detail, which the 3D scanners don't actually capture very well unfortunately.
    This 3D scanner does pretty much the same as my old Matter and Form 3D Scanner I bought about 9 or so years ago.
    The only benefit of this one over my old one is, that it's hand held, and can scan larger objects because of this.
    I was really hoping to see a huge change in the 3D scanning technology after 9 years, but it's still lacking any relevant change unfortunately by the looks of it.
    Don't get me wrong here though, for larger objects they are fine, but for fine detail on something like game miniatures, these things haven't changed at all, and aren't very useful unless you want to take the blob you are left with and use it as a starting point in Zbrush to re-sculpt it or something...
    Hopefully something different and a lot better comes out someday soon with these things, to make them more useful for finer detailed objects.
    Thanks for the video, it's appreciated, and not your fault the technology is still lacking!

    As usual from Creality, a device that is good value but only gets 80% of the way there and misses the mark:
    1) WHY IN THE WORLD would the scanner host a wifi network you must connect to? Now your device (computer) can no longer get out to the internet while in use. It would be SIGNIFICANTLY less complex all around if you connected the scanner to your existing wifi network and the software discovers the scanner. This also means you can do this with a remote desktop or server (like a Windows VM, foreshadowing to point #2....) while you use the scanner elsewhere on the same network
    2) No Linux support for their software? What is this, 2009????
    3) The software is not open source
    Really silly stuff here, but seems like a good budget solution overall
