    I like taking old footage of 'over-flights' of the Grand Canyon or other scenic spots and running it through photogrammetry software.
    COLMAP and Meshroom are my go-to apps.
    I can get high-quality 3d meshes from old videos...even things/places that don't exist any more!
    I can even 'capture' scenes from movies...really fascinating to see movie-sets from other angles.
    'Live' 3d scanning with a dedicated device can never be replaced by photogrammetry...the processing time for for a 30 second clip might run 6+ hours!

    Excellent video. New subscriber here.
    I bought a Ferret when they first came out, then set it aside because it seemed like there was too much crap to go through to learn to use it. (Also, the software wouldn't run on Mac OS.) Given your inspiration, I've hauled it back out and will take another run. Thanks!

      You can often times use chalk spray to get around that. I personally found the bigger issue with phtogrammetry that all of the packages require nVidia GPUs and those cards tend to be very expensive compared with other options. I haven't looked in a couple years, so maybe that's changed, but it gets tiresome having everything be geared to CUDA even though there is an open standard available.

    • @Songfugel
      @Songfugel Месяц назад

      @@SmallSpoonBrigade Things have changed a LOT in past few years in this technology in particular. So mich so, it is hard to keep up anymore, even as an engineer who used to work with these systems before massive improvements.

Ive seen people destroy the thing they want a copy of with spray paint or sanding off the shiney bits or putting marker dots or stickers all over and they all end up with artifacts and missing most of the detail. They must have got the software to actually look for an object and ignore anything that moves too fast in the parallax. I think if they could get it down to under $200 then families and hobbyists would buy them up. Congrats Creality! You should send Me one to review

      @@RoofusKitThe reason his scans went well is because of the subjects' physical properties, matte (like the ceramic dog) and geometry feature rich stuff are like the easiest stuff to scan. Anything going outside of that spectrum will quickly fail because of the weak lasers this device has, small capturing frame and crappy software. The only notable scanners from Creality are Otter and maybe Raptor but they cost a lot more. Unfortunately the competitors like Revopoint aren't much better but at least their Range model solves the small frame issue for cheap. Even better would be the Einstar as it also solves the other two problems mostly, but again it's costly.

    • @glenfoxh
      @glenfoxh 2 месяца назад

      Yes, it likely be an apples to oranges thing. The type of 3d scanner used at a crime scene would most likely be something like the Creality CR Scan Raptor or Creality CR-Scan Otter. Or even something better than those.
      One issue however is, the police and crime investigators, don't make a lot. They don't work for someone like 007 would. So whatever they get, likely is not top of the line, like those used by the devs of the game Gran Turismo had used to scan cars into their games. Those cost a fortune.
      This is however, is just my own personal guess.

    • @vinceaaron8921
      @vinceaaron8921 Месяц назад +1

      definitely apples to oranges. this one is more comparable to manufacturing that will do quality control. the one on crime show is more of a survey instrument. the manufacturing one can get to 100th mm where as the crime show one is about 1mm just due to laser diameter. i have been using terrestrial laser scanners 17 years in industrial setting doing asbuilts and the advances in speed and software is mind blowing. something that would have taken +4 hours to scan can be done in 8 minutes now and the software now makes post processing much easier.

    The coloring in 3D scans is incredibly misleading, as they always enhance the object, adding all of the detail, which the 3D scanners don't actually capture very well unfortunately.
    This 3D scanner does pretty much the same as my old Matter and Form 3D Scanner I bought about 9 or so years ago.
    The only benefit of this one over my old one is, that it's hand held, and can scan larger objects because of this.
    I was really hoping to see a huge change in the 3D scanning technology after 9 years, but it's still lacking any relevant change unfortunately by the looks of it.
    Don't get me wrong here though, for larger objects they are fine, but for fine detail on something like game miniatures, these things haven't changed at all, and aren't very useful unless you want to take the blob you are left with and use it as a starting point in Zbrush to re-sculpt it or something...
    Hopefully something different and a lot better comes out someday soon with these things, to make them more useful for finer detailed objects.
    Thanks for the video, it's appreciated, and not your fault the technology is still lacking!

    27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ” Luke 16:19-31

    All you scanned was 'blobs' . Things that really have no real detail. I'd like to see you scan something like a small army figure (you know like a little 2 inch high toy army man, throwing a grenade) or a bird (you know like a chicken - feet and all. I dont want to see scanners scanning some blobbious piece of junk. It is not a true indication of what people want scanners for.

      Unfortunately it's all these cheap scanners are good for, anything else with sharp edges will come out horrible if you even manage to get it scanned.

      Did you guys watch the same video? There’s always a limit to sharpness, especially when 3D printing an object.
