As a KIRI Engine developer, I would say this is a very objective video. Good work! This video inspired us to make our App provide higher quality and make it more affordable in the future. And I believe with the technology growing, 3d scanning with phones will elevate to another level.

How about finishing the phiz? I spent almost $800cdn buying this hot garbage, during the pandemic, for you guys to drop support almost immediately after releasing it. I would never, and will never, trust anything from Kiri. After the Phiz joke I'm very surprised your company didn't change its name or disappear. The phone tower that originally came didn't work, battery came unplugged because the glue they use couldn't glue toilet paper, so they sent me a second tower. To show everyone how much of a joke Kiri really is they shipped it to me double boxed. Outside box addressed to me. Second box addressed, and had full postage, to some other person.
Sorry to pull a full rant on this awesome video but I want people to see how much Kiri actually (doesn't) stand behind their products. Especially pulling this crap during the pandemic! I had to scrape my pennies together just to be able to purchase this paper weight. End rant.

@@xingyechrishu6382 they should have been refunded. They don't do anything even remotely to what was displayed in the promotional videos. I spent so much time trying to make it work! I even went as far as building it a 3 sided box to block out everything behind the turntable. I was using a Blackberry Priv and it wouldn't work. So I bought a higher end Motorola One Hyper and still got nothing usable. I was blown away by the promotional videos. So disappointed in the actual product.

It's not as easy as I thought it would be. That's for sure. With all the modern technology we have, there's really no reason we don't have good, free programs that we can make scans with jpg files. (That are accurate and measurable/modifiable in CAD programs like Solidworks, AutoCAD and other CAD programs). I haven't really found anything like that yet though and have had to always make parts from scratch.

Great video, Eric! Really enjoyed watching this shoulder-to-shoulder comparison. 3D scanning has involved so much in the past few years. Although many phone apps can do 3D scanning, they don't always use the same 3D scanning methods. There's more than one way to make a smartphone do 3D scanning, there are photogrammetry (traditional but still gives the best mesh if done right), LiDAR (fast, but mesh is not so detailed), FaceID (Meh, not a great choice), NeuS (The tech that KIRI Engine and MakerWorld use, I believe) and the recent 3D Gaussian Splatting (Cool but can't generate mesh). But unfortunately, 3D scanning has always been a niche topic that not many people are aware of the pros and cons and the impact of different 3D scanning methods; it's so nice to see a great video on RUclips that toggles the differences between each 3D scanner app.

I dont do a lot of 3D scanning but when I do I just take the photos and upload to Meshroom on my laptop, I have learned that very busy objects just don't look well in a scan or a 3D print, my best success was some brake/clutch levers I scanned and printed out in Nylon CF for a friend.
If anyone wishes to comment that this is dangerous, don't bother! the levers were tested and well, we couldn't break them.

It not only uses regular photogrammetry, it also combines that with LiDAR, motion sensors, and GPS to dial in the geometry as it captures more. And it’s all calculated on device as well.

8:20 Damn, that's just abysmal. You try 3mf format? Some of the CAD programs I've tried warn me about saving STL files and ask me to save a 3MF file instead, which can also be imported to most slicers without losing so much quality. I can't say for certain that's true, because the STL files I've made have all been identical to the 3MF files I've made so far... but that's what the software claims when you try to save a file in STL format.

    • @my3DPrintLab
      @my3DPrintLab  6 дней назад +1

Hey! Yes, 3MF is the way that EVERY program should save At this point, especially with multi-color or even just a a slicer that can do multiple plates, STL is outdated. FYI, 3MF saves printer settings, models on different plates, colors, and all other slicer settings. The only drawback is that if your printer is different, you'll have to make the adjustments appropriately for your printer. Or just load geometry only, which is basically STL. But at least you have options with 3MF.

@@my3DPrintLab That's good to know. I've been wondering how people save their files when they're using more than one filament, because I've never seen an STL file with more than one color (and STL is what the vast majority of files I download tend to be for some reason).

    I wish I wasn't so old now -- I'm 63 and a retired certified millwright.
I'm also not very computer literate. I can do email and copy n paste --- LOL.
I looked into 3D scanning years ago before I even dreamed of buying a printer. It was obvious to me at the time that scanning was THE issue. If they can't build a scanner that sends code to a printer ACCURATELY then it's all a waste of time, at least for someone like me who is computer challenged. I have trouble even using the paint program and still don't know how to use it very well.
Why would I want to use 3D printing ?
I can build almost anything I need on my milling machine or my lathe.
The problem is that if the item is complex then 3D scanning n printing is THE answer as it's to complicated for a home machinist.
    The other issue.
3D printing involves plastic. I want to make an item out of wax but there are NO wax printers out there.
    Why wax ?
Answer: Because if I have a wax mold I can cast the item in metal. I also do aluminum casting. I'm still working on the porosity issue. But at the end of the day I want the final product in metal.
    By the way, great video.

Thanks for watching! Lots of things to unpack here! ;-)
First, You're not old! Keep going and have fun!
Next, I don't think any scanner actually sends it to the printer. You always have to do some editing and stuff, but it's definitely getting easier.
As far as Why? Check out some of my other videos. It's fun, I fix a LOT of stuff around the house, and well, it's fun!
For wax stuff, 3D printing is PERFECT for making molds. Of course, you have to design it first, or find it online, but it's a great way to go. Candles, silicon, wax... you name it. Just use the right filament for the heat requirements.
I do a lot of woodworking and love using my lathe as well, but 3D printing has fixed a LOT more things around the house. I mean, the bed and table and stuff I've made are great, but not spending $10 or $50 bucks here and there on stuff that breaks, and making it to my personal taste, is pretty awesome. Like the rings I did in a video that go around my ceiling lights. Designed in about 5 minutes, printed all in an hour or so, and they look like I bought them.
It's a new skill, yes, but I obviously love it. Thanks again! (sorry for rambling!!!)

The information is useful but the constant repetitive 10 note "music" is INCREDIBLY ANNOYING! If I wanted stupid music, I would subscribe to some of RUclips's "music" channels.
That's unfortunate, because I could use the information, but you lost me at 8:54 in - just too much unneeded junk in the audio.

And remember, I did 50% printing with "Default" settings. I plan to expiriment a good bit more as I have time, seeing what looks better.
