- It is time to take your 3D printing to the next level and create your own designs. The steps are simple, and the process is easier than you are expecting. I am using the free version of Fusion 360 for modeling.
My 3D printer: amzn.to/3vBwuoE
My Digital Calipers: amzn.to/3B7ngSb
There are 4 basic steps of creating your own prints.
First you need to think of what you want to make. This may sound basic, but it is a very important step. I am starting with some functional designs that will help around the house. I wouldn't start too advanced for your first design. That way you won't get discouraged.
Second it sketching and measuring. Digital Calipers are cheap and make this step really easy. Also, don't over think your sketch. These don't have to be pretty, just so you can understand what you wanted to create.
Third is 3d modeling of your sketches. I am using Fusion 360, because it is really powerful and makes basic designs easily once you get a hang of it. I would recommend skipping TinkerCAD because even a design as simple as this would have been so much harder in TinkerCAD, but took 5 minutes in Fusion 360.
The Fourth Step is printing, and I would recommend printing at a prototype quality. That means weaker and faster than you normally would, because your first design might not work.

Just a tip, when you're printing your first prototype, reduce the extrude significantly so that it's quicker to print and utilizes far less filament.
I also imagine that you should use a different filament for prototyping. I’m working on getting a 3D printer and in my head I imagine that I should have one set of filament for each color and I wouldn’t have to spend extra time painting the base color. I think it would be best to keep a extra set, or five, of a single color for prototyping. Am I correct in assuming that I can switch out filament after every print that I make?
@@Soulfire702 ehh not really.
@@DenzelHooke Rip that idea then
@@Soulfire702 Hi, if you have the budget, get a Bambu Lab P1 with AMS. This is an auto colour changer. I've just started 3d printing, absolute beginner, and got my P1S with AMS less than a week ago. It does exactly what you want, auto colour change between 4 colours, great for prototyping in a single basic colour, then final print in multi colour. It's seriously so easy to use.
Note the less expensive bambu lab A1 has similar functionality. Happy printing!
@@litebreeze811 Thanks
I always appreciate when a creator leaves in the mistakes and let's us newbies know it's okay to try and fail a lot to get what we need - kudos! Earned my sub
back end of your calipers have a rod that comes out for making depth measurements
I got a rod for depth measurements..but unfortunately can only do them up to 10 1/2 inches. 🤫
2:50 his don't seem to have this. the ones from the screenshot do, though
omg i'm an idiot..i never knew what that was for
Also many have a reference edge behind the jaws for measurements as well
😮@@southernfriedcircuitsDon't feel bad, I have a brother of adult age that still can't change a flat.
Fusion is expensive as hell. Don’t even know why you recommended thid
There's free version for hobbyists
Don’t forget to give clearances for fitting parts. Exact dimensions will not make the parts fit to each other, a clearance of 0.1 mm is good for tight fit, .2mm is good for smooth fit
I'm currently considering getting my 1st 3D printer and I found your video a great introduction to what designing your own pieces is like. Thank you!
Get one bro I just got one and it is so cool
Hope he got.1 just got mine..
Great
I have my Bambu Lab A1 + AMS coming tomorrow. Learning about the slicer and modeling, its all so cool
Just got mine, it's magical to design something and then later have the thing in physical form in front of you!!
Keep in mind that a fillet will create an unprintable overhang since it is a radius feature. It doesn't matter as much on extremely small features but for features against the bed it is better to use a chamfer and good to get in the habit of keeping in mind the way your design will be manufactured.
Good video for people who are wary of designing something themselves. Starting with these simple items that aren't likely to already exist is perfect. Showing that it is fine to not get something perfect the first time and understand the point of 3D printing is rapid prototyping.
That's what supports are for....
@@cinemoriahFPV Supports are a waste of time and materials if a simple design change can eliminate them entirely. This goes back to the "designed with FDM in mind" mindset you should have when designing a part. Instead of relying on the Slicer settings, which won't be the same for everyone, try and make it not require such things at all.
So a small fillet rad cannot be printed on the bed cos of overhang?
What's the process for getting your design on an sd card? I'm on ender 3. Great vid
Hey, just stumbled across your channel now, this being one of my recommended videos; the quality is great!
I was captivated and watched the entire thing in one go. The way you explained yourself while modelling the parts were very beginner-friendly imo, I have some experience in fusion 360, but not a lot!
The only thing that bugged me was not seeing the entire part in fusion, could probably scale down the facecam box a bit, maybe half of the current size?
I didn't notice you talking quietly either for the modelling part of the video! Still had a great sound quality and volume.
Deserves more subs for sure, hope YT recommends me some more of these videos!
Thank you so much for the compliments! I'll scale down the facecam in the future!
@@JJShankles I know this video is from a while ago, but it demystified F360 with its simplicity (adjusting for complexity).
On your calipers, you exclusively used the outside jaws, but the jaws opposite the ones you used are for measuring inner dimensions.
Small tip, for hard to reach places, use something like a drillbit or pencil that fits in the "hole" and measure the object. That will be more accurate than guessing ;)
Complete noob here, trying to understand the ecosystem.
In this example at least, I guess Fusion 360 is the design software.
Is Ultramaker Cura specific to the 3D printer hardware or do the 3D printers generally allow or force the user to choose the software that controls the printer?
What is meant by “slice it up?”
So Fusion 360 is just a 3D Design software that makes a 3d object. This could be used for several different use cases. The "slicer" software turns the 3d object file into the instructions needed by the printer to function. Cura is a really popular slicer that works for almost any printer, but some companies have their own slicer that may work better for their 3d printers
Thank you so much! Super clear and helpful! :)
You shouldn't let the heat out of your dishwasher. The heat is part of the drying process. In fact it IS the process. The heat trapped in the metal pots and pans and also crockery in the dishwasher is necessary to dry the rest of the contents.
You make it look so freakin easy. I have so much trouble trying to learn CAD. I get so discombobulated. Thank You for all you do JJ. I love listening to you on The Perfect First Layer podcast on iheart radio.
This helped me so much! I knew nothing before today and after tediously studying this video I'm at least a LITTLE more confident. Thanks. Liked and subbed!
This is exactly what I was looking for as I finally transition towards my printer being a useful tool.
Speaking of useful tools though, you know that the tooth on the bottom of your calipers are for measuring depth? Because I never paid attention to that until recently, somehow. You might've been able to get it down into your air register. You probably knew that but maybe someone else didn't? I had them for years without realizing the use of that little peg.
you can use also fusion 360 to slice the part directly without having to export eh stl or 3mf file. These days the software has become more powerful
This is my first exposure to designing a 3D.
Great video... I would have used a piece of wire coat hanger for both projects but I'm 63 yrs old... I just had someone design and make me a part... I'm amazed
Haha that's true that a simple wire would work for these simple uses! But I'm always trying to use the 3d printers to fix as much as possible
how do you recycle the unused versions after print
Great vid. Although tutorials on fusion 360 are good. This does a great job at showing work flow.
Im struggling to nodel in scale especially when it requires precises holes for screws etc.. when i model the units are not the same and slicer.
This was exceptional! Love your work man! 🙌🏽
Old video so sorry for commenting but this has helped me so much! I’ve been looking for an easy walk thru and this has helped a ton. Thanks!
I'm so glad it helped!
This video should be clear that a knowledge of Fusion 360 is required. There is no mention a mouse clicks or how you toggle from dimension to dimension.
Someone new to Fusion 360 would not be able to follow. This is obviously supposed to be for beginners, so please explain what you are doing in Fusion 360.
I do like the way you teach, you are clear and concise. If you just added a bit of information about navigating in Fusion 360. it would be great.
Stuck in Fusion 360 purgatory. Please Help. Simple Coil with an end that stands straight up from the centre of one end. I've tried the Sweep command and have managed to waste many hours trying to do this. I'm discouraged and frustrated in what should be an easy task. I was hoping you could do a beginner... step-by-step video on how to force drawings to a Zero "Z" access and Move commands. I often have to move my drawings from floating off the surface and place them back to the build plate level. I've wasted a lot of filament printing unnecessary supports. In addition can you please cover how to use the Move Commands and Sweep commands. My approach so far has been to brute force them with varying degrees of success.
Instant subscribe! I love how you walked through your entire process instead of simply showing what the perfected end product looked like.
Great video. I would shrink down the size of your camera next time. You’re taking ulna significant part of the screen with your camera.
yeah like Props for FPV trying to make props 2.9x2.7x3 first 2 is the sice the 3rd is how many blades
The only problem that I see with this video, if in your audience you have complete novices, you gave them absolutely no idea what was going on in Fusion 360. The only thing they would glean from the video is that, making simple pieces is not that difficult, if you know how to use the software. So quite frankly, a video not needed by anyone with the knowledge to use 3D printing software and a totally useless video for beginners. My criticism is intended to be constructive.
Hello, im in search for help, i just started my fusion learning.
I've come across with the problem that every print i make is smaller than the design, printed a test cube and its flawless, but the fusion stl files. All come out smaller pls help
This was super informative and educational. I was able to design and print a simple screen cover for my 3D printers touch screen so my baby doesn’t cancel any more of my prints in about 15 minutes thanks 🙏🏽
Why didn't you just adjust your dishwasher spring tension? 😬
Some don’t have springs but friction
Great presentation
Idea for your dog: make something for your dog to sit on it, and when placed it on your vent, will cool it's whole body, and be more comfortable too.
Can the free version of fusion 360 do everything shown here?
Thank you for this. I don't have a printer yet but my ideas will require designs. This video was priceless. Thanks again 🫡
great video but please make your camera view smaller next time, it's too big on this video almost 1/4
Found the sketch button but it is not letting me press it, it’s grayed out. Does anyone have some advice?
Very clear and educational video for anyone new to fusion. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Metric might be easier because it is base 10 but imperial is base 12 and therefore much more accurate
Great video so glad I came across it very helpful for beginners
May i say thank you for using the metric measuring system.😅 made this video easier to learn
I have put simething on idk what but its showung a sketch all the time not a 3d model
Hey! I'm using this profile and it's amazing. I'm about to test our SUNLU's PLA+. Do you know what settings I should change to make it print well?
very nice tutorial explaining the process of designing a part Thanks!
I have never seen a ruler whiteout millimeters. that would be useless IMO
when doing the thickness, remember the diameter of your nozzle hole.. ie .4mm so it would help ya by making thicknesses in multiples of .4mm.. instead of 1.0mm do .8mm or 1.2mm. Just something to help
Doing some Cardboard Aided Design as the first mockup can avoid those initial prints.....
Thank you! I've had 3D printers since 2017 and this is the first time I've actually been brave enough to design and print my own part. I modified my 18 scale truck to fit larger lipos and had a battery tray design in a few minutes. It's all downhill from here!
Love the video, very informative as I'm thinking about getting a 3d printer of my own and in currently in the learning how it works before investing period.
Just a tip IMO, you should shirk your face cam a bit as it was blocking visibility. I appreciate your time used in creating this video.
How is the quality going through exporting? I have been using Shapr3D for a while now, but kind of not wanting to pay to have good quality exports.
Another tip. Be carefull with the fillet function. It is almost impossible to change the fillets afterwards.
Dude, thank you, as a beginner looking to learn to design, learning fusion was free to personal use creators was seriously awesome, and this video helped me gain a lot of confidence in my ability to design, albeit simple things with not many multi level and dimensional angles, I think I have a fairly high chance of success with the simplicity of things like this! My friend currently works with a lot of bambu Labs P1S’s and I’m learning to design so I can bring more to the table and take a lot of the workload off him!
One thing ! - Leaving dish washer door slightly open - is going to allow damp wet steam to go on all nearby surfaces! If that is wood - it could over time , make wood sweel and cause problems etc A dishwasher is made to condense to air to water and to drain.. great vid BTW
I'm probably two years late but you can adjust the tension on the door of your dishwasher, it's done on the front of the machine below the door, sometimes behind a grill or toe board
Fantastic video, so quick, detailed enough, spans beginning to end... Much less intimidating task now.
Thanks for the video ❤
little hint, if the dishwasher door keeps dropping, on the bottom behind the foot cover should be some kind of screw vertical which trenches the counter spring, this way you can adjust the door to not drop.
thanks for the suggestion on software to use for creating. i have one question hoping you can help me with. i made something with threads but when i transfer it over to creality it did not bring the threads over with it. the holes are there but the internal threads are not.
Awesome vid! You made everything a lot more easier to understand thank you 🙏
Imagine a board game created by 3d printers that have all the functions of upgrading your avatar as you play
This is very similar to the software I use for my university, it's called siemens NX
Btw @2:55 you can fit them in there use the back of the calipers as the plastic comes out it's used for depth.
Hey man cool video learned a lot. Just started with f360. I can design things but for a project i need to create a compression mold out of a shift knob it would be cool if made a tutorial about it. Pleaseeeee 😅😅
It would definitely be more helpful if you scaled down the video inset just a tiiiiiny bit
Damn bro you way to quick for me good vid, im total noob and im struggling following
JJ, I need a double folding hidge that can open a flip phone vertically or horizontally depeniong on which was you want to flip
Ill have to have a machine shop build the hindege most likely out of hardended steel so it can remain small and strong on the case(s)
Awesome video man!! I learned a lot from it! Thank you :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
One thing that should be worked on is different elevation points and dimensions like a piece that fits into something that requires more than a 2D drawing and extrusion
Thanks I know you have a lot of subs already but you do deserve more
Wow maybe I’ll manage to make a few models.
at this point its cheaper to just get rid of the dog hahahaha
what ae some more things like fusion 360 i can use to model
can I use solidworks for 3d printing modeling?
Als de schuifmaat niet past om iets te meten, dan draai je hem om en gebruik je de smalle pinnetjes aan de andere kant. Die meten namelijk de binnenmaat. Dan hoef je het er niet naast te houden en te gokken
Extremely helpful video, very easy to follow and fully understand how to use Fusion, thanks for taking the time to do this.
I think its sham to see this dude not having many sub coz he really deserve it!
Thank for the video. I want to learn more to make some things myself. Do you have more detail videos like this how to for a begginer like me?
thank you for the video, im beginer in 3d printing and i did a perfect job because of you
how much do raw materials normally cost for a little print like that?
A kilogram of material is about $20, and this is only a few grams, so maybe about 10 cents. I don't remember the weight of that print
@@JJShankles Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it
the stem that protrudes from the end of the caliper is used as a depth gauge.
How can i get the fre fussion version
What kind of 3D Printer are you using?
2:45 ... But callipers have two sides, the other side is for measuring gaps so you don't have to guess lol
8:22 my ok button is grayed out lol... I'm screwed
Just open the dishwasher door all the way, then pull the racks all the way out so there's no place for the dog to climb on. A 2-second simpler solution, no charge.
They will lick the clean dishes, so that won't really work.
This guy definitely owns an LTT Screwdriver
What make/ model 3D printer do you use?
My print keeps srinking
dude, this video helped me so much, thank you bro
Where can you find free version of fusion 360?
This was super helpful! Thank you.
This guy loves clicky things
Thank you! Helped to create my first 3D print to assemble the metal fencing. Saving a lot of effort in assembly. Subscribed!
Make it looks so EASY! i could listen to you all day thanks!!!
What is the name of 3d software? Is it free ?
you shoud make more videos about this it is rlly helpful
thank you so much for making this video. Very helpful
3:52 Microphone gain? :D
Thank you I have just bought myself a ender 5 plus using fusion 360 and the way you have explained everything has made it a lot clearer using fusion 360 thank you!!!
THIS MAN MAKING SWITCHES😭
Is this me???😭😭
Amazing video thank you
