      You should definitively watch the Stand Alone Complex seasons. The anime of 1995 kept a story from the manga and adapted it but it's much darker ; the SAC are new stories but they have the mood of the manga and follow the whole unit instead of some characters only. Both are great and worth watching.

    In the original understanding and canon, the reason she see's herself everywhere is because her synthetic body model is the cheapest on the market. This was by design to hide the extremely valuable servo systems inside that would make her a target for looters should she ever get damaged in the field. She looks like a standard cheap model (interestingly, this model was designed to be, and always intended to be caucasion, so despite the american movie being a shit live action adaption, contrary to what people think, it wasn't actually race washing. except the reason for her cacasion look in the film was incorrect)
    This theme of identity, or if you are real, your ghost (soul) being manufactured or a fundamental aspect of who you are that can never be replaced or destroyed, is what Ghost in the Shell is all about.
    All of the characters represent different aspects of identity. Bato has robot eyes because eyes are the window into the soul, he has no ghost. Not literally, but in metaphor, he is the audience, the sound-board for the philosophical discussions with the major and those around him. He is the one these discussions are explained to, and he's also played as the 'straight man', the man that is surprised, normal, reacts like an average guy. His reactions are the audience's reactions.
    Togusa has absolutely no cybernetic parts other than a few implants that allows him to discuss in his head with others. This is because his own personal identity is in how human he is, he cannot cyberise himself as he feels it would make him more machine than man.
    All the while, the major is fully cyberised, with little understanding on if she is even real, and constantly questioning this fact about herself.
    The point of Ghost in the Shell, is that "identity" is relative to the individual. What you consider you, is all you there is. If an artist considers his hands an intricate part of their soul and identity as a person, then losing those hands is akin to losing their humanity. Like Togusa with his body. Botou with his eyes. Motoko with her whole form. What makes you you... is something only you can decide. No one else and no society can place constraints on that.
    It's all about raising that question. What makes you, you, in your eyes. Where does man stop, and the machine begin. Are you real, or just a 'Ghost, in the Shell'.

    • @sharpen193
      @sharpen193 5 лет назад +40

      Well the "race washing" was a dumb issue, the biggest one I had with the hollywood movie was that she got to learn about her past and parents. The point is that she could've been anyone or if she was even a "real" person. Her past being known destroys a huge part of her character.

      @Beppu, she's aware of her past in the Stand Alone Complex series, as in that series she's a survivor of a serious plane crash IIRC and the only way to save her and give her a quality of life is to go full cyborg as one of the earliest adapters, otherwise she would have died as a child in a broken unfixable mortal flesh body.

    • @sharpen193
      @sharpen193 5 лет назад +9

      @@darrenrichardson6146 The point is also because of that plane crash, they never grew up with a human body. She never really had a past that mattered in a world where people's digitized brains can be reworked and their whole self changed. Her entire past could've been faked and her work requires her to not have a life to settle down.

    • @NorrisFoxx
      @NorrisFoxx 5 лет назад +15

      Never has it ever been stated anywhere that her synthetic body was modelled to appear caucasian, nor has she ever shared the resemblance of a White person. She has always appeared Japanese.
      In fact, it's absolutely ridiculous for anyone to even assume considering the overall setup and setting of the story. I've no idea why some people continue to display such cognitive dissonance on this matter - same thing happens with Dragon Ball. Personally, I think the movie told the story it needed to just fine. I don't feel like I need anything more. Not saying more couldn't have improved it, but more isn't always better. I didn't need to know anything about the Major prior to her cybernetic body's creation nor was it an action movie where there needed to be a huge climactic event in the third act to wow its audience. Maybe I'm wrong but that's the issue I gleamed they had when they said they didn't realise the movie was already ending. It's true - we only got a glimpse into this futuristic world but that's the glimpse Mamoru Oshii wanted us to see. Not how advanced the rest of the world was, how this Japanese government as a whole is structured, nor even anything about the Major's human life, if she ever even had one. It was about transhumanism and the need for one's "uniqueness" in a world where your whole body could be manufactured. Your memories manipulated. What then is a human being? How can you know anyone is? I feel showing us a human Major would humanise her far more than was necessary considering her existentialism. It removes doubt. "She did exist". "She was like this". "That's why she became this". There's a distinct loss of meaning for her existentialism in the earlier parts of the movie once you know for sure.
    The Puppet Master was not evil. All it wanted was to be treated as a living being and it understood that as creating an offspring to improve its "genes" and then die. It even acknowledged the laws of the country and asked for asylum. Also, as I understand it, the Major is just as dead as the Puppet Master at the end. She merged with him and essentially killed herself, her own "uniqueness", to reproduce something new. That's their "baby" at the end with both of their "uniqueness".
    Lastly, the animation and art are absolutely gorgeous. This is the type of anime I love most of all.

    The last scene you see she tried so hard to tear the tank she broke her body

    It is just not acting like "human"

    The author was (probably still is) incredibly educated on new technologies and put a lot of detailed explanations on every tech gear he showed (vehicles, guns, computers, body augmentations...). Trully visionnary stuff, sometimes heavy and hard to follow storywise, but super interesting.

It's like watching 2 movies at same time. Stand Alone Comlex has a better Plot because it's its core as apposed to surface noise. That being said Stand Alone Complex is a great show and definitely react to it.

Two movies at the same time, one happening right in front of you and one happening just below the surface. The more time you invest in this movie, the more it has to offer. Truly a work of art.

      I love how the informational sentience is cast as a Messiah to lead humanity forward, and also a martyr who dies for humanity's digital sins as only they can, as an entity born purely in the digital realm. I also love the whole marriage, reproduction, and death repeating twice throughout the film, once to create Makoto Kusanagi as a completely cybernetic person, and again with the joining of souls. It brings to mind the strong themes of resurrection in early Christianity. The whole God and heaven comparison with the internet at the end is so evocative, especially the beautiful scene that shows bullets travelling up and transcending the Tree of Life carved in stone, like how the Major was able to be freed of her Earthly shackles to take her place at the side of God (the Net). God I love this movie to death.

    If you guys want to check out more Ghost in the Shell here is a list starting with this one. First is this one then there is the sequel called "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence".
    Then there is the completely separate continuities.
    The first anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
    Then sequel to Stand Alone Complex called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
    and then the movie that is the sequel to to second show and ends things off within this continuity, the movie is called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society.
    Then there is the continuity called Ghost in the Shell Arise which comes in 50 to 60 minute long episodes called borders which were later remade into ten episodes which added one more piece to the story and then a movie called Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie.
    They are all fun honestly. Also in 2020 a new continuity is to be made and will air on netflix, it is called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2045. (I'm guessing it will be like the other Stand Alone Complex shows but will tell it's own story.)

    1)Her name is Major MOTOKO (Moh-Toh-Koh) Kusanagi (Koo-sah NAH GEE). Her brain inside her head is still a real brain, she's a CYBORG.
    2) The "Sections" are para-military Police force divisions that all answer to the Pan-Asian government consortium.
    3) the Puppet Master merged with Motoko's mind (her "ghost") so she only sounds like Motoko because she or "they" wants to, there's a bit of "synth" accent to her voice to indicate she's not just "the Major" anymore. Her brain or just her mind (ghost) could be uploaded into ANYwere, any network, any server, and she'd have full control and access over all of it nothing could stop her. that's was kind of the point. her/Their mind "is free".
    most ALL of these concepts is featured in the film "The Matrix".
    4) Watch the anime series Stand Alone Complex and Second Gig, it eventually reveals whom Motoko was before she was a full-bodied cybernetic person known as Motoko Kusanagi.

    If you're into Cyberpunk and the whole question about Whats the difference between Humans and Androids/Cyborgs and their place in society, 80's/90's Japanese animation has you covered.
    Of all the people on this darn planet, Cyberpunk is one of the Biggest genres that Japanese loves, with Fantasy and Mechas.
    There is a SHITLOAD of Cyberpunk works in manga and anime, and they mix all kind of other genres.
    Other Cyberpunk movies that has a different atmosphere and are real good are Appleseed and Patlabor.
    And in the anime shows Psycho-pass is definatly a good one to watch.

    I like that you mentioned how unsexy this movie makes nudity. I love that the camera frames the human body as little more than a machine, exactly how Motoko views her body. They don't shy away from nudity, because why would you feel shame about a machine, but they also don't frame the nudity in a sexual way. The human body isn't glorified or stigmatized, it's just a tool.

The only thing to be aware of is that requires the viewer to pay actual attention, because it's not gonna re-explain everything again and again just for the viewer's sake :D

    Stand Alone Complex was a spinoff which worked as an insight into the operations of Section 9 as a working unit, presented as episodic stories with an overarching story. The first series dealt with the Laughing Man case, the second the Individual Eleven case. Where the films are more philosophical in tone, the series is also attuned to an adventure detective cyberpunk style. Both series are great and compliment the movies.

    Was my first Anime feature film I ever saw, and third anime I ever watched (after Gundam, SDF Macross and Neon Genesis: Evangelion) It along with the others and Cowboy Bebop and started my life long love of anime, and now I have about 2500 - 3000 watched anime series and movies under my belt. I love it and I love that kids these days can grow up loving anime without the stigmas I had to endure, as it's becoming more mainstream and accepted, just like gaming has. I just pray that the classics like these and the anime industry as a whole never caves to the western social pressures of the toxic world views we have in our western countries, and that Japan continues to produce free and pure ART like this. I love Anime, and I hope it lasts forever, long after I'm dead and gone.

    The Major (Kusanagi) has a human brain and so her consciousness is human. To her, her body is just another suit.
    Wasn’t The Matrix directly inspired by this.
    PLEASE CHECK OUT “INNOCENCE” Or known in the US as Ghost In The Shell 2. You won’t be disappointed.
    From what I heard the manga is more sexual, and in a weird way even though the stream of consciousness in terms of science and technology speculations combined with philosophy is high brow, that part of it was a bit lower brow compared to the anime. Not sure.
    If you wanna see Stand Alone Complex I can highly recommend going straight to the “Second Gig” or second season.
