yes rick, tiger woods is also a very well known golfer however the old dude's tone was more like, I know tiger woods too presuming that all African American people know each other. It's that racist tribe mentality. He also seemed to follow the sport so there is the assumption that he knows more than one player. They were conveying covert racism in those scenes.
thank you for addressing this very important point out about his commentary in that moment. I had the exact same thought and hoped the point could be made to Rick about the true underlying subtext of that line. Not to fault him, but just to have him understand and bring it to his attention.
I get the point being made, but with golf Tiger Woods is the most famous player. It's like asking if someone knows who Michael Jordan is. The subtleness can be lost because it's tonal and off of background clues. By changing it to Harold Varner or Ted Rhodes it would have been presented slightly better. I knew who tiger woods was (a golfer) years before I knew he was black. Or go with a sport with more than a handful of famous people recognized by non watchers of it.

I liked Allison's acting. She looked so innocent the whole time and then the change of character with the missing keys. Anyone could have fallen for her! What a great movie!
Their comments on her being hypnotized and possibly not responsible due to her upbringing remind me of an interview. The actress actually commented on that particular view in an interview supposedly, some white peoples were unable to believe her character was just evil and wasn't hypnotized at all her, trophies in the photo frames behind her are proof. I'm, sure she made a statement commenting on how white people (her words) just couldn't, and still can't, believe her character was in fact extremely evil.
That's because the most racist white folks are the ones who believe they aren't racist and I'm sure a lot of white women act just like her character, that's why they couldn't believe she was evil. The book White Fragility speaks on this topic.
Bit of symbolism for the deer thing, that may or may not be true: buck used to be a derogatory term for African American men. Again, can't remember if that is true or not. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
That’s true and there used to be these horrifically sick farms called “buck breaking” where they would rape male slaves in front of their families. It was punishment for those who were rebellious. It’s truly sick.

The stop and stare scene is symbolic as a black man myself and black people in general goin to a place where they are the only black person in the room/school/restaurant ect and everyone stops what their doin to look.
You guys noticed the prevalence of the deer symbolism but had a hard time figuring out its relevance. It is connected to slavery. “Buck” and “doe” were animalistic terms used for enslaved people. Abductors would refer to them by these terms when selling them, communicating with other enslavers in the market, catching and trafficking runaways, and really enslaved men and women in general. This dehumanization of Black people further justified treating them as livestock. A staple part of chattel slavery. Like the deer Chris hit, his mother was also left to die. Kind of like a “good riddance.” This is again referred back to when Chris used the deer head to fight back and decided to go back to save the possessed maid. He couldn’t accept the guilt of simply leaving her to die like his mother was or the deer.
cody parrott It’s so sad that this is what black people feel when getting pulled over and sighing in relief when it’s a fellow black person like them. They have valid reasons to feel that way and I hate when white people say it’s racist to assume every white cop is bad. Years and years of trust constantly being broken is going to mess with them. Ofc they’ll be afraid, like there’s so many videos of police brutality out there with them being the main victims of it 🤨
Someone please tell them to watch, "Batman: Under The Red HOOD". Since they are watching Titans and Young Justice, it's important that they watch this movie.
Someone may have Commented this as it's been a year but when the cop shows up and the girlfriend makes a deal about him having to show his ID , she acts like it's a "because he's black" thing but really she just doesn't want record of where he's heading and who his is with once he goes missing.
And doe was a name for a female slave. Great symmetry with the doe at the beginning and the woman at the end that he tried to save (as well as alignment with the story of his mother).
Who was the villain in the movie? It was society in general. Did your stomach feel tied in a knot when the police showed up at the end of the movie? Either Chris ( Daniel Kaluuya) was going to be shot or given the death penalty. When it was revealed that it was Rod ( Lil Rel), a collective sigh of relief washed over the audience. The police, along with the first militias, were created to keep Slaves in check to fight the numerous Slave Revolts that took place when Slavery was legal. The police, along with the Militias, (modern day 2nd Amendment Gun Advocates), have been used to keep "the Blacks" in line, while they stay ready for the impending race war they believe is coming. Ask yourself why so many White Men have said they are trying to incite a race war when they kill people of color in mass shootings. Getting back to the movie, I believe it was Eric who asked about the connection concerning the Deer. Another word for Deer is Buck. During Slavery there was a practice called "Buck Breaking." This was normative behavior that took the strongest, most aggressive male, who "bucked" the system of enslavement, to routinely rape him in front of his family and the community of enslaved people to send a message that Slave Revolts would not be tolerated, and if they could break the strongest enslaved male, who would dare to challenge the system? I could go on about the justification of the inferiority of Black and Brown people given the way "White" people and their allies have used the Bible and so called Science (Genetics) as excuses to justify their segregationist, apartheid policies, sanctioned by the Federal Government, against descendants of Slaves, Japanese people, who were put into internment camps (which was the connection of the Asian man in the movie), and Immigrants from our Southern border.
"modern day 2nd Amendment Gun Advocates" -> You mean republicans? The same republicans that fought and freed the slaves? Think you watched the wrong movie homeboy. This film was a satirical take on passive racism constantly put forth by white liberal elites who "dont see color" yet slight blacks in day to day life through microagressions and microdiscriminations. Also w/r/t "buck breaking" You're attributing symbolism that doesnt exist in the movie. Deer doesnt equal buck; the deer at the beginning is a Doe (female). The deer is merely a representational tool that used for visual symmetry throughout the film.
So I just watched this movie today and I must say that I really enjoyed it. I really liked how it never over-explains what is happening, it lets the viewer think and figure it by himself. I loved figuring out stuff like: They don't want him to smoke because that would weaken the body, the "parties" were how the old white people would check the new "product" before he was auctioned, and stuff like that, it always felt like if it was I who was solving the mystery of what was happening. Now, the message of the movie. I guess this is a commentary in those white people that "love" black people (the daughter having a black guy fetish, the father thinking that Obama was the best president of all time, etc) when in reallity they do not care about the person and only see them as some kind of eccentricity. The movie was good but I am not sure why everyobdy was going gaga for it, maybe because this is one of the few modern horror movies that managed to be good? Who knows. P.S. The TSA guy was the best character in the movie.
the ending of this movie was supposed to be much darker and sadder, i believe he got arrested, but the write changed it at the last minute because he wanted his protagonist to win due to all the bs he went through
I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it for the first time, I still think it's a great movie, but I only have one problem with it, the Hypnotism, most people think that anyone can be hypnotized at any time, but that's not true, you have to be open to it, she wouldn't have been able to just say, "You are now in the sunken place." He would have needed to focus on something, and let her hypnotize him. If you don't want to be Hypnotized, there is no way that someone can hypnotize you, and if when you are hypnotized no one can make you do something you are not inclined to do, so if those people were hypnotized in real life, they wouldn't be working at this place if they didn't want to subconsciously. But that also works in with the brain surgery, so that they are less able to be themselves and snap out of the hypnosis. I still think this movie is great, and definitely has some amazing acting, Peele is amazing at what he does.
I highly recommend watching this with directors commentary. Peele apparently has made a books worth of backstory on the cult and how they are the descendants of the Knights Templar and were trying to find the secret to eternal life. In the bingo scene they are wagering how many ancient relics they are willing to trade and the son also has the knights mask. He apparently has a bunch of backstory but wants to take it ti his grave. Also while Peele didn't say this, this idea probably explains the candles. They were probably paired with things like the Gregorian chant to create more of an ancient ritual feel to the whole procedure.
Its this movie, It Follows and Hereditary, well i love horror period so ya'll could have a whole day dedicated to horror (movies/tv/foreign/anime) I'll enjoy it. Hey October coming up, u could do a whole month.
The director saw Black Mirror's 15 Million Merit (where Daniel was the guy!!! You guys reacted to it) and he spotted him there. That's why he asked Daniel to audition.

yes rick, tiger woods is also a very well known golfer however the old dude's tone was more like, I know tiger woods too presuming that all African American people know each other.
@@kyleellis9177 yeah that line didn’t hit for me like the rest of them, because me as a white dude knows a ton of golfers but if I was asked in a spur of the moment decision to think of one it would still be Tiger and not because of his skin color ya know.

this movie is so beautifully written, love that you guys reacted to it
I liked Allison's acting.
I did
That's because the most racist white folks are the ones who believe they aren't racist and I'm sure a lot of white women act just like her character, that's why they couldn't believe she was evil. The book White Fragility speaks on this topic.
But you could also argue that she could’ve been a completely different person if she was raised by different people.
She was literally smiling while being choked to death😭 if that don’t scream evil I don’t know what does.

Bit of symbolism for the deer thing, that may or may not be true: buck used to be a derogatory term for African American men. Again, can't remember if that is true or not. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
It's true
That’s true and there used to be these horrifically sick farms called “buck breaking” where they would rape male slaves in front of their families. It was punishment for those who were rebellious. It’s truly sick.
@@TheSuperNats No, it had absolutely nothing to do with rape. They tied them to a wooden stump and whipped/scourged them, that's what "breaking the buck" was. Have you ever seen Roots, where Kunta is being whipped? That's what breaking the buck was.
Yes the buck comment is true, but it had nothing to do with the scene with the deer. That was an intermittent scene to get the cops to arrive.
The only symbolism of that scene is the symmetry for the ending of the show.

There's two main forms of racism: the liberal racism, the type of stuff you get in the north and from democrats. That's what the daughter is supposed to represent. Then there's the more up front racism. Typically associated with conservatives and the south, like a cop calling you boy or racist rants about eugenics. That's what the brother represents.
Racism isn't regional. Different "types" of racism can be found everywhere and not all people are just one "type" of racist

13:40 I just love how Eric just looked up as well😂😂😂😂
You guys noticed the prevalence of the deer symbolism but had a hard time figuring out its relevance.

The police, along with the first militias, were created to keep Slaves in check to fight the numerous Slave Revolts that took place when Slavery was legal. The police, along with the Militias,
(modern day 2nd Amendment Gun Advocates), have been used to keep "the Blacks" in line, while they stay ready for the impending race war they believe is coming.
Ask yourself why so many White Men have said they are trying to incite a race war when they kill people of color in mass shootings.
Getting back to the movie, I believe it was Eric who asked about the connection concerning the Deer.
Another word for Deer is Buck.
During Slavery there was a practice called "Buck Breaking."
This was normative behavior that took the strongest, most aggressive male, who "bucked" the system of enslavement, to routinely rape him in front of his family and the community of enslaved people to send a message that Slave Revolts would not be tolerated, and if they could break the strongest enslaved male, who would dare to challenge the system?
I could go on about the justification of the inferiority of Black and Brown people given the way "White"
people and their allies have used the Bible and so called Science (Genetics) as excuses to justify their segregationist, apartheid policies, sanctioned by the Federal Government, against descendants of Slaves, Japanese people, who were put into internment camps (which was the connection of the Asian man in the movie), and Immigrants from our Southern border.

That part of the house was on fire, he's dead.
Jordan Peele won the oscar for best adapted screenplay and the movie was nominated for best picture
