Actually, when hospitals lack adrenaline to reanimate patients, they make them watch Red Line to revive them.
This movie is a PURE shoot of adrenaline.
Eric is completely right. The director, Takeshi Koike, did also make part of the Animatrix. World Record for all those curious
I read "Animatrix" as "Animaniacs" and was VERY confused.
They hint at Machine Head being Sonoshee's father. She was waiting for him at Oasis, she waves at him when he arrives. They show him reacting to when Sonoshee's car gets wrecked. He tells her to use the steamlight. Assuming she's near JP's age, Machine Head most likely gave it to her after he won his first redline 20 years ago.
I'm so glad someone else figured this out!
It's incredibly subtle storytelling especially for a movie like this. I love Redline so much

Part that I loved at the end was all the racers at the end are just exhausted and smiling, they didn’t win but it didn’t matter, they had fun, even Machinehead.
Every single movie poll that this was on, I voted for it. And finally they watched it! Most excellent.
The fact that it took 7 years and 100K+ drawings to make and almost bankrupted Madhouse is quite an achievement for a first time director. But Takeshi Koike is a great animator from the 90s/00s and he does an amazing job directing Redline, 16:50 is a really good example of his vision. The sound and editing is also really crisp. Even if the pace slows down a bit in the middle, whereas Madmax Fury Road for example you’re non stop in it, it’s still a really fun movie. The first 10 minutes is simply the best entrance to an anime movie I’ve seen. We even got a Kaiju battle!
It really shows why it took 7 years wonderfully animated movie

@@laboon344 Allegedly, a lot of what was ‘done’ was thrown out about halfway through to have it fully redone from scratch, which is more of the reason it took so long.
However, what did wind up done, was done very well.
For those that always missed it, Sonoshee is heavily hinted to be MachineHead’s daughter. He was the one she was waiting for in the restaurant and she mentions her father being a famous racer. They’re also the only two racers prominently featured to have a steam light, Sonoshee saying she received hers from her father. I thought it was a cool addition to the story.
Literally Sweet JP racing Sonoshee's dad for her hand. Sugoi and kawaii. Very based.
Also the gangster fixing JPs races was the guy he idolized as a kid.

I do hope they eventually check out Space Dandy. Shares a lot of the same energy as Redline. It's also really funny.

Every aspect of this movie is perfect, the voice acting (in both english and japanese), the animation, the soundtrack, the jokes, the commercial ads, the twists and absurdities. There is no flaw I can find in this movie, every single time I watch it.
the pacing of the story aspect, particularly with JP. it is bare bones and mashed together.
They have a story there, but we see it from the perspective of the kid at the beginning.
WOOSH and its gone.
That is why the movie flopped.
I love it and I love learning more of it, but even so...
@@scout360pyroz The story isn't the point. The narrative is an excuse for the spectacle, and it makes no effort to hide it. All of the major players are parodies or blatant rip-offs of characters from F-Zero, Initial D, and other big racing games and animes, while the characters from RoboWorld are like saturday morning cartoon villains. It all exists in service of making the race interesting and upping the stakes and hazards. It's a movie you need to meet half way; if you're not willing to agree to the movies' terms then you won't enjoy it.

@@scout360pyroz it just wasnt popular enough and at that time only box office mattered, it could not go viral because the internet was "weaker" then, but everyone i know that saw it, ranks it incredibly high (especially the animation, which is absolutely perfect)

Holy shit, I've watched this so many time and I've never noticed that. He shoots screwdrivers because he's a mechanic. Such a cool, almost pointless detail but so worth it

The tragedy of Redline is that it was a huge financial flop and almost bankrupted Madhouse, one of the oldest and largest anime companies in Japan, so please buy the bluray.
"Is that what this movie was lacking?!" The sheer flabbergasted emotion in that sentence!
I'm so glad you guys watched this movie, it's an underrated gem. It's so unreal that Madhouse spent 7 years making this movie and it was all hand-drawn. No CGI whatsoever, just pure cel animation and the amount of work they put into this movie truly shows.
Lately this movie has been getting more recognition and that makes me really happy because it really deserves it.
I had it for free, I don't even remember how... And I lost it, never saw it, because the scenario was too weird... i regret so much right now!
It's not cel animation though. The term "cel animation" comes from the transparent celluloid sheets they used to draw frames on to stack up and photograph. Nobody does that anymore. While animation frames are still mostly hand drawn, or entirely in Redline's case, all the processing (coloring, compositing, effects etc.) is done digitally. That's the difference between cel and digital animation. I highly doubt that a single sheet of celluloid got stained in the making of this movie. So Redline is 100% digital animation, not cel.
@@WannaComment2 I watched the documentaries on how they made the movie and there were elements of cel animation being used. Not saying that digital animation wasn't used cause it was, I was just saying that it was all hand-drawn with no CGI. The movie is a mix of cel and digital animation, but all hand-drawn.
It's super depressing to me, that this movie had so much work put into it, and was still considered a failure.

the fact that it's all hand animated made me buy it instead of pirate it. massive respect to Madhouse for their similarly massive balls.
If you guys were into this and Gurren Lagann, you absolutely have to watch Promare. Nowhere near the same level of animation as this, but operating on the same principal of cool. Done by Studio Trigger, an offshoot studio founded by former employees of Studio Gainax, who also did Gurren Lagann. Hype soundtrack and hype moments like that show, plus a really cool use of 2.5D animation. You guys would really dig it!

Cowboy bebop is the apex of hand-drawn anime, and redline is the apex of hand-drawn anime movies. This movie is all about the rule of cool and mind-blowing animation.

Redline is probably my favourite anime movie of all time. The OST is incredible too, I play the Yellow Line theme every time I get in the car, it is sofa king cool
I bought this years ago at a Best Buy on a whim. It was whimsical and literally the best buy I ever made.
This is one of the most INSANE movies I have EVER seen and almost definitely ever WILL see! This movie is just amazingly strange and over the top and I love it for it.

If you watch carefully, the reason they're able to pass machinehead is because they LITERALLY PUSH THE ACCELERATOR THROUGH THE FLOOR.
I love this goddamn movie. By far my favourite anime movie, the only one that I can say competes with it is Sword of the Stranger.
I like that they commented on how it was somtimes hard to discern what was going on, because that was intentional. The director literally said he wanted to make an animated movie that is an assault on the senses, there needs to be as much information and intensity as possible. Nailed it.
I love the big fat smiles plastered all over your faces for the whole length of the movie. That's what Redline does to people.
The truly impressive thing about redline is how a few seconds of artistry are impressed upon the brain so vividly in so little time. Each moment burns in extremely fast and clearly.

I've loved this movie for a decade lol, and it's always been way too underloved. It's one of the most high-octane acid trips of a badass movie I've ever seen, all with perfect visuals. I clicked this vid in a nanosecond when I saw it posted, and your reactions are everything I wanted.
Even though I saw this movie awhile ago, this is still the first time I've rewatched anyone's reaction immediately again after it ended. This was gold ;)
Fact that this entire movie was hand drawn still blows my mind. Its so amazing.
There are two OVAs that came out before Redline that star two of the characters in Redline called “Trava Fist Planet”. You can find it on RUclips, I like to think it happens before Redline.
I think I found out about this movie because I one day asked “are there any movies like F-Zero?” Lo and behold some mad men actually went and made such a movie and I’m eternally grateful.
O my god, I have no idea how many times I have seen these movie and I love to see your reaction for it. I have seen comments mentioning some of the really subtle details. These movie has some extremely subtle storytelling on the relationship of some characters and it gives you some really fun times on future watches.
Details include the relationship between Machine head and Sonoshee, and the possible traitor that informed them about the disintegrator cannons and possibly sending people to release "Funckyy Boy" being the doctor guy wanting to get read of the biological weapon.
Also I believe the mob guy was the guy driving the golden car that JP kept remembering.
They need to watch Space Dandy now.

Pressed the like button about 4 seconds in, this is without question, one of the best looking animation movies ever made. Also one of my favorite.
I found this movie through its soundtrack and watched it recently to love it. I do hope more people get to see it.

Wacky Races, crappy future, Kaiju's, humanoids, superhero-ish, rockabillies, aliens, AKIRA-like powers, Space Trump, mafia, militaristic dictatorship, mechs, magic, idols, rockabillies... perfection in 100k photograms painted with blood ink and adrenaline over 7 years of production! I heard about Redline for many years, I saw it just 5 days ago and I'm not the same person anymore xD
I honestly didn't think such a production could exist so late in the 00s... there are still great anime movies, and studio Ghibli baked masterpieces for all these years but this... this is basically the AKIRA of the 21st century!
After watching the movie, directly looked at the reaction and yes this movie is underrated af. A hidden gem ngl. Found it only by accident through Yt recommendations.

Studio Mad House really conveyed a sense of speed and adrenaline with this film, I would love to see what they'd do with a Sonic anime with the same team of animators.
I just watched the movie, absolutely fantastic, the ending song was perfect.

space dandy is like an animated series of redline.
The best description I got from my friend before I watched this movie was "Imagine Wacky Racers racing thru North Korea drawn anime style if the artists were on LSD at the time."
This is that one anime where if not always about revenge, saving the world, etc., the fact of using cool as the theme and theme plot is not only different but very relatable.
Just as Ren & Stimpy were weird and unsettling in a good way, this was about style, money, and promos in the right way.
Btw, can we take moment how awesomely different the opening intro is where it's a simple rock jingle like a commercial, and yet so fuckin' memorable.
This entire movie was just Madhouse studio flexing on every other animation studio
Whoa you guys have never seen Redline? An absolute work of art, and absolutely criminal how underappreciated it was at the time.
