  • This video explains how to adapt a readily available smart charger to charge a Trend Air Shield Pro. This overcomes the deficiencies with the "dumb" charger that comes with the Trend Air Shield that leads to premature battery failure. The charger is a Tenergy Smart Universal Charger for 2.4V - 7.2V (Red).

The battery charger I mention is no longer available. One of my viewers, Gary Lundgren Crafts posted this link ruclips.net/video/DwkSmlJKgJY/видео.html
Here are instructions for making an inexpensive replacement battery pack. azwoodturners.org/pages/tips/100_-_Airshield_Battery_Pack.pdf I may have a video out on this after I get the parts and get it working.

Thanks for the video. I noticed the new charger had what appeared to be a molex connector (the white plastic connector). It looks like the one on a standard 7.2v remote-controlled car battery. You could pick one of those up at your local hobby shop and make an even cleaner connection. Heck, just head on in to a hobby shop and they'll sell you a similar charger and probably wire it up for you. I checked online and the battery appears to be a Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH), so make sure to use the lower setting on the amperage.

Thanks, Mike. I just got an Airshield Pro, have already had battery charging problems, which the manufacturer responded to by sending me a charging station. That works, but I can't just plug in the helmet, I have to remove the battery. I'll try the charger you mentioned, and wire it into a plug that will go into the helmet.

Mike - thanks for the video. I had been thinking about buying a Trend unit for a while. A recent short turning session with an unknown species of wood (olive wood, perhaps?) gave me coughing and sneezing fits. Time for something better than my Uvex shield! Anyway, It appears that as of now (4/25/2022) Amazon is selling that smart charger for $16. I've got the charger and the Trend unit on their way!

That is great. The unit I bought is no longer available. Last time I checked an eqivalent unit was quiet experience.

Good video Mike! That mask looks cool. You would think it would come with a better charger. Nice workaround solution. Looking forward to the next one!

Maybe it is a change from Trend, I received my Trend Air Pro for Christmas 2014, my charger is RED when I plug it in and then Turns Green when completed ... Somewhere in the instructions, when I received it, there was a note to always recharge for 8 hours or 12 hours if battery is completely dead ... As a side note, mine does not seem to hold the charge very long ... My brother has one a couple of years older, charger works the same and he also said instructions say to charge for 8 hours when recharging...

Thanks Mike. I've been considering dumping my AirShield Pro, but may adapt your fix instead. I generally like the unit, but for the price, the Trend people really need to make some improvements. At one point, I dropped the helmet on my shop floor from a height of about 22 inches It quit working. I disassembled it to find the impeller shattered. It's a very fragile item which could easily be beefed up. I met with Trend in Raleigh and they kindly sent me a replacement blower assembly which I appreciate, but believe they should correct the underlying design deficiency. As you've pointed out, the battery and/or charger is simply not up to par. I suppose adapting a smart charger would be helpful, but am considering installing a Lithium Ion Battery from some other source. I have two of the trend batteries and try to keep one always charged, but only get about a half hour before the beeper starts blasting.

I agree. I am working on a replacement battery pack that plugs in the charging hole and fits on the belt.

Here is a video I made that may be interest to woodturners who want to adapt a smart charger to the Trend Airshield Pro. The "dumb" charger that comes with the Trend have a tendancy to shorten the battery life if not used just right.

I had some light timers that use pins to set the on and off times. Removed the on pin and set the time to 12 noon and put the off pin in to turn the charger off at 3 am or 15 hrs later. Eliminates the continuous charging problem with the original charger.

I bought one of those too. I did not use it much and it tended to be confusing. Not sure why but it was. I wonder what I did with it?

Mike, I have watched your video and also read Greg's thread on the same subject. I just purchased a Trend Airshield Pro and had already ordered the "smart charger" mentioned. When it arrived it had a different charger than you show, and I had also borrowed a friends Airshield Pro to try and it had the same charger you show. The new one has a red LED that comes on when you plug in, but, it turns green after I am assuming the battery is charged. I am not sure if it has a trickle charge to maintain the battery or not. I haven't had time to check with volt and ammeter but I will. I will use the "smart charger" anyway since I have it already. When watching your video I noticed the rubber band on your lathe tailstock. I am assuming that is to keep the handle pulled up to let the tailstock slide without holding on to the handle. It would be a welcomed third hand if it works well. It is a simple but great idea if it works well, I am going to try it. If you have comment on how well it does let me know. Thanks Bobby I am just a little south of you in Tifton, GA.

Yes, the rubber band works great. I published this tip in American Woodturner and had a guy from Texas who called me to say he had suffered from a stroke and this tip made turning easier for him.

I bought one recently. My first issue is it makes me feel top heavy and gives me a stiff neck, the second is charging but you could put in a timer, set to 8 hours. The other issue I have is you can only obtain particle filters and I use solvents and aerosols etc
    Thanks

@@MikePeaceWoodturning I have seen others where the filters and the batteries are fastened at the back on a belt, which keeps the dust away from the filters.

Would it work putting that fitting on the Tenergy charger and connecting to the helmet? I thought that there was some charging circuitry there. Or is that just direct connection to the battery?

  • @dtec30

I know this is an old video but I was able to purchase a new Tenergy and I need to ask a question: At about the 141 mark you spoke of a "Greg Katell" from "Sawmill Creek" as the person who suggested this trickle charger. I cannot find this person nor the "Sawmill Creek" anywhere on RUclips. Can you supply a bit more information? I just want to see what he says about it. Many thanks. Steve

Hi Mike. I'm thinking of getting a Trend Airshield Pro. They are a little pricey so here's my question. Are they worth the $400.00? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  3 года назад +1

Wow that is so subjective. I have one and almost never wear it. It does well when I do. I only have one battery and it seems it is always dead. The batteries are not Lithium Ion I do not believe and their charger is not a smart charger so you can't just leave it charging or it kills the battery. But it is still probably the least expensive one out there. I keep wanting to develop a cheap battery pack I can wear on my belt but can't seem to get motivated to come up with one. I guess I just need to use my charging solution in the video. 🙃

Great review. My company has been at work on a PAPR with an all in one design monocoque manifold. Our aim is a PAPR that's more accessible to the DIY crowd. When we have certification, would you be willing to give it a try to compare? Its called MicroClimate Air3.
