    UPDATE ------------
12-26-17 - I contacted Trend Support and got the reply that the charger that came with my Airshield Pro is a smart charger. See link below. Still, it should be disconnected from the charger once full. At least it will not continue to send a full charge rate.

    FOR USA
when plugged into a ‘live’ outlet, and no battery connected LED illuminates as green to show a live circuit. When connected to an under charged battery, in helmet or battery cradle, the LED changes to red. When battery charging is complete, the LED changes back to green and battery is on a trickle charge.

I flew RC not so successfully. Flew GA for 25 years. Mostly in a Stinson 108-3. Loved it.
Just bought a Airshield Pro. Appreciate your thoughts on recharging the battery. Helps with my new addiction working on a lathe.

Hi Gary, thank you for a very informative video. After purchasing my Trend Airshield pro I did a bit of research on charging NiMh. In part due to the high price of replacement batteries. After watching your video as well as a few others I looked around for a smart charger and happened to find a slightly used Thunder AC6. Since I do not use the airshield pro daily or even weekly would it be advisable to run a discharge charge cycle once in a while? And if so how often would you recommend doing it? I ask because my experience with batteries has taught me they don’t last long in power tools when not used regularly.
    Thank you for your assistance

Clever solution. My company has been at work on a PAPR with an all in one design monocoque manifold. It has Lithium ion with smart charging onboard. Our aim is a PAPR that's more accessible to the DIY crowd. When we have certification, would you be willing to give it a try to compare? Its called MicroClimate Air3.

Hey Gary, thanks for this video! At the time I started implementing this solution, the Thunder AC6 was no longer available. I now have the Tenergy TB6AC+80W 8A unit. The unit works well, but the owners manual has ZERO instruction on charging NiMH batteries. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Gary, didn't know you were into RC airplanes. Why don't you do a video and show a little bit about them. I have always been interested in them, thank you

In the notes up above; could you include the size of plug that would fit the AirShield Pro? As well as the settings you place your smart charger on when connecting to this battery. I too have lost the charger that goes with this helmet and don't want to spend $71.00USD for a replacement. I would rather solder a compatible tip that easily plugs into my Tenergy Charger that is compatible with the shield. I know that this was published in 2017, but is still tremendously relevant useful information to me........right now.

Thank you! I don't know what the plug size is as it was a left over part from another type of charger. I did give the sizes of the outer and inner diameters of the tip. I would suggest searching online for adapters of those sizes. In the video I discussed the settings I used on my charger. Thanks!

Thanks for watching! Thanks for bringing this up. I'm sure you are not the only one.
I would suggest to reach out to Trend support on that. They have been very good with answering questions.
My experience is that the charger is smart and will cease charging when the battery is full. But I got the green light saying it is. If not, I would be inquisitive about that as you are.
Another option is to check the charge when full, or expected to be full. With a multi meter on a DC volt settting, the battery should show about 3.6v to 4.2v at full charge.
      Hope that helps! 👍

Did I read somewhere that NiMH batteries should charge at C/10 max!!!! 0.1C not 1/2 C

Thanks. I don't understand the rates you are mentioning. These chargers use rates that seem a little odd compared to common thinking. For example, with batteries that have a 1000 mAH rating we charge those at 1.0 amp on these chargers. That sounds odd to most people. But is how it works.
I had researched this for charging Ni-cads and are my notes if you would like to see them. I put this link in the video description also.
