I know that FDA has the policy “safe until proven unsafe”, but i think it’s too risky to use parabens when there is such a variety of other preservatives. Yes, they don’t cause breast cancer, but they cause breast cancer cells growth. Yes, they can be used only in small amounts, but they are used in 85-90% of food, drugs and cosmetics, which means almost every thing you ingest or apply contains parabens - small amount+small+small = big amount. That is why Europe has banned or restricted the use of some parabens - because there is no enough data. If there is a tiny bit of concern about an ingredient I don’t want to use it. Europe is usually way more careful when it comes to people’s health than America
Completely agree..and Im an American.
are you a biochemist?
nefretiti how do you figure they cause breast cancer cell growth? do you realize correlation =/= causation

Hi Kenna, this was a great video! Very informative. Would you be able to do a video about mineral oil? I have heard a lot of mixed information on it and I would like science based facts and your opinion on if this ok for skin use!
I use mineral oil in my skin care (Nivea blue tin) because I have extremely dry skin and I find it is the only thing that keeps my skin supple.
Watch Dr Dray, she covers a video on this
@@amixeblu Try using Le Roche pose the rich versions. I found them to be extremely good for my dry/sensitive skin. I used to use nivea a lot too.
@@Izka3gChupaChups La Roche or any other French brand that uses (Vichy, etc.) spring water is extremely drying on my face, for some reason. I can't do it, tried, but just: no! OTOH There is a brand called Louis Widmer (Swiss) and that is not bad, at all!
@@amixeblu Too bad it doesn't work for you. Have you tried plain 100% aloe Vera gel? I'm not sure is that hydration or moisturiser but it does miracles with my skin. If I get the version with tea tree it works miracles for wrinkles, dry skin, breakouts.
What would companies do if we had more RUclipsrs like Kenna? They wouldn’t be able to get away with their pseudoscience marketing gimmicks.
It's not pseudoscience persay, it's usually finding loopholes in regulations and taking advantage of what they're allowed to say within the regulations. If it was pseudoscience a bunch of companies would get sued every year.
13:56 - For those who are most interested in learning about natural preservatives :)
Thanks 🙂
Thank you so much! It’s so great having someone experienced and educated explain these things to us. Companies definitely fear monger and market certain things to get us to buy them. I love your channel! Keep doing what you’re doing! ❤️
Knowledgeable people like you should come out & teach people the actual things, unlike the so called skincare gurus who know nothing & have not studied the basics behind the chemistry of elements & mislead people about preservatives. Thank you kenna for this video.❤❤❤ waiting for more informational videos🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

Do I know what parabens are? No. Will I watch it because Kenna? Yes.😅😅❤❤❤
Needing more data before allowing products to be used in the market DOES mean you are protecting your citizens...
hi! could you possibly make a video on what “diy skin care” products are and aren’t safe for your skin? there’s just so many conflicting reports on what’s safe for natural skincare and what’s not. I’m just very curious.
Since Dr. Dray, Lab Muffin, and now Kenna support parabens, I wish companies would use them.

Thank God I found your channel! So much misinformation on the internet!
This is very interesting, thank you! I am curious about silicons and EDTA , if you get a chance. Thank you.
Hey Kenna, do you know if any preservatives are known to disrupt the skin microbiome once they are applied? Thanks for the informative videos and for bringing science to the people!
Great question. I'm wondering the same thing too.
They do!!!! Though look at the number of women who have fibroids and PCOS. Parabeans are not that healthy and are endocrine disrupters
My concern is there's less than 1% of the Phenoxyethanol but if you're using 40 products on your skin that have it then that increases the amount in your skin… Right?
Can you do hair products like shampoo and conditioner next please.
Yes!!
@@KennaWhitnell can't wait! 😊
Thank you Kenna! I started following Dr. Dray, who is a dermatologist, recently and so far I don't 100% agree with everything that I've heard her say (yet!), but I increasingly find myself finding more and more information that solidifies the position she takes on certain things which you are explaining in this video. This is very helpful, because you're both coming in from different angles explaining the misinformation. It's been very helpful since some changes in my skin have made me look much more deeply into ingredients in my skincare.
You re so beautiful and smart, can you be my BFF? 👯
Seriously we need more people like you on this platform. I always learn new things from you... thank you for sharing your knowledge 💕
How about sodium laurate sulfate in products?
Yes I can cover this!
This video is certainly food for thought. From what I have been able to read and hear, mainly by dermatologists, parabens have been unfairly 'demonized', with all the consequences that you mentioned. About phenoxyethanol, though, I was surprised not to hear anything about the effects it may have on infants whose mothers use skin care products that include it (see here, f.e.: www.safecosmetics.org/get-the-facts/chemicals-of-concern/phenoxyethanol/). All ingredients, either natural or artificial, may have their pros and cons, and not just in skin care. Also, I wonder: Let's suppose that a country/region's law allows the limited presence of an ingredient, up to a certain amount (e.g. not over 1%) in a formula. When a product contains dozens of ingredients, including multiple controversial additives, how can the consumer know if the total amount of up-to-1% additives (e.g. potentially funky preservatives etc.) does not exceed a potentially worrisome amount? Plus, if certain ingredients tend to be included in a multitude of everyday-use products. Has each and every one of them (or each and every potential combination) been studied adequately, and in a time span that's long enough? For example, see "In nail salons (…) female-dominated industries" here: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/feb/23/truth-world-built-for-men-car-crashes
Maybe a video on ingredients that you would never use on your skin or in your products. That would be interesting and good to know for those of us, especially myself, who are so influenced and dont do our own research 💜
Great video, and so very informative! May I ask you, what do you think about phthalates and fragrances in skincare products? This is a big topic! Thank you!!
I would like her to discuss phthalates also!
Bromide would be another good topic, since we are bombarded by it and flame retardants that are toxins
I wish companies would go back to using parabens. Maybe if everyone realizes parabens are ok, then companies will start using them in cosmetics again. Keep spreading the word :)
They won't. They'll even start to restrict it even more, because there's more and more scientific evidence that it's harmful for the environment. But if you stick to "mainstream" companies you'll get your parabens. Only organic and green companies don't use it. Actually if you want to have these green and organic certifications for your products in Europe you are forbidden to use parabens.
They're not safe!!
Whats your opinion on sulfates?
I want to know too!
They can be drying but they act as a lather in most formulas

hi i am using phenoxyethenol 1% in my Lipstick formulation.is it ok to use this much?
I cant find phenoxyethanol here in UAE😭
What I can use alternate in phenoxyethanol
sadaf saleem honey I’m clueless about chemistry 😭😭. How do you measure 1% of Phenoxyethanol 😭
@@yomaadugbo Formulations should add up to 100% so in that 100% phenoxyethenal makes up 1%. When you are creating your product you need to determine your batch size. E.g your batch size is 100g, to find how much phenoxyethenol to use you would divide the batch by 100% and then multiply it by the percentage the product is in the formulation(in this case its 1%) so that would mean 1g of phenoxyethanol makes up the 100g batch.
I have a contact allergy to parabens, so the anti-paraben hype is great for me 😂

As someone who is becoming more conscious of ingredients in my products, I don't mind that something has preservatives in it, as long as it's non-toxic and safe to use or consume, respectively ("respectively" because obviously I'm not gonna consume my shampoo, lol!).

Question re parabens. You said that the science does not say that they cause cancer or are estrogen like in the human body. But are there any definitive studies that say that they don’t? I’m a new breast cancer survivor, hormone positive, so certain types of ingredients worry me. Thanks!
She said that there aren't studies done on humans that proves that parabens cause cancer. Unfortunately they take a lot of time and effort to be done correctly so I hope that new studies will come out soon! Anyway congratulations for beating cancer! Wish you all the best!
she actually said there is no data to prove whether it is or isn’t harmful.

THANK YOU! I could not for the life of me figure out why my products would mold, even when I used the maximum usage for the natural preservative - the reduced shelf life and using all-natural ingredients!
Question: Can I pair two natural preservatives to extend the product shelf-life and reduce the chances of mold developing, so long as there is no adverse interaction or reaction?
Thank you. Exactly the info i needed.
thanks for sharing your information and your knowledge girl!!! incredible video (: Keep it up

I can absolutely not tolerate phenoxyethanol 😑 my skin goes crazy. And citric acid. My skin has all of s sudden acquired some sort of dermatitis... so far he told me to only wash with water and you use petroleum jelly to try and figure out a root cause. I'm also an esthetician and I just cannot get past the fact of not washing my face. I'm very into ingredients and how they affect the skin and what they do do you have any suggestions? I would love if you could answer me I just came across your channel I know this video was made a few years ago but I absolutely love this thank you so much for all your fact
Fabulously informative! 💖
Ever heard of better safe then sorry?!? The root of the problem is that Parabens and phenoxyethanole will make some people sick and not others. You all can take the chance. I myself will not.
Question- can preservatives harm your skin microbiome or the "good" bacteria in your skin??
So is it dangerous or hazardous to use products from a company that only uses radish root as a preservative for those with sensitive skin? I’ve been using a company’s products for a couple years now and haven’t had issues, but I wonder over time or anything else if it is an issue or could be a potential issue? And what would you recommend as a body wash that doesn’t have fragrance or that isn’tharsh on the skin due to being highly sensitive towards chemicals and fragrances? Please!! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video keep them coming !!!😁 I've been allergy tested and found I'm allergic to phenoxyethanol after years of using it my face is chemically burnt almost like rosacea and dealt with severe eczema. It is sooo hard to find any cosmetics without it present 😬
Wow and here she is making it sound like she knows eeeeeverything about these chemical ingredients.
I'm waiting to have an allergy test cz it seems like the products I've been using for years suddenly make my eyes swell ....
How did you find out you were allergic?
Hi Kenna. Thank you so much for being so explanatory. I didn't start yet handcrafting products that fall into the "cosmetic" category but been researching a lot about preservatives. Your video just made my life so much easier. I was inclined to use a specific one (Europe) but now I'm sure that's the way to go. Thank you so much again!! I'll be following you for sure! 😊🙏
Thank you. I am trying to switch to safer cleaning and personal products in my house. So much information has me conflicted
tbh most things that are sold are safe because our bodies have the amazing ability to metabolize and combat certain things. So I don't think you should worry about it as far as personal products go. People stop using deodorants because 'it has a aluminum in it' but our bodies are filled with metals like aluminum, iron, etc. We eat aluminum in our fruit. It's just not necessary and our bodies are fine. Cleaning products can be harsh tho but you can make your own that are safe.
@@junebug3354 I think it's the repeated usage that makes it harmful. Think about how many people use deodorant 365 days a year for decades, that then becomes the problem.
Is it true that you don't use products with parabens, regardless of the fact that you encourage their use among your followers?
Hi kenna
What's your opinion on propylene glycol as a preservative is it in your opinion safe for using
Thanks John
Can u please suggest me a preservativewhich i can use for my natural handmade soaps.
Parabens and phenoxythenol gave me rash like bumps
Hi Kenna, thanks for the vid. I didn’t think phenoxyethanol was broad spectrum? Isn’t it weak against yeast& mould?
It is broad spectrum but yes can be a little weak for yeast and mold depending on the formulation (pH, other ingredients). It is often combined with a small amount of sorbic acid/ potassium sorbate) to assist with the protection against yeast and mold.
How would i figure out the ph level of the product im making in order to know how much of a paraben or preservative i can put in my skin care products?
I read that parabens are indocrine disrupters, wouldn’t this be bad??

Yes! Thank you so much for this. I make skincare products as a hobby and I've been lucky enough to know from the beginning that preservatives are needed. The amount of strange and dangerous recipes out there in the diy community is mind-boggling. And people are starting to voice concerns about phenoxyethanol too 🙄
It’s safe! :)
It's safe. I think people "hate" on it because it's what most brands use to replace parabens.
@Ronald Reagan it can leach styrene, which is carcinogenic.
Okay. Now I am going back to other UA deodorant that has paraben. I have been choosing non paraben deodorant here in Australia and none ever worked. Their natural deos did not work for me unlike those I have used in Philippines. I was misinformed. Thank you for enlightening me!

That paraben studies reminds me of the GMO food issue. When a scientist said GMO’s are bad because these rats grew tumors and all that stuff. But then it turned out that the rats he used were naturally prone to getting tumors no matter what you fed them.
ikr gmo's are fine idk why people are weird about it.
Kevin Aparicio Omg yes. I roll my eyes everytime someone rattles in about avoiding GMOs. If only they knew that their organic gmo free food has most likely been sprayed with harmful pesticides and has a higher likelihood of becoming contaminated with bacteria, not to mention all the waste created from a larger portion of crops dying out as compared to conventional gmo crops.
FINALLY! Thak you! Than "paraben histeria" is still going on where I live. I'm an ingr nerd & have to explain it over & over & over again.

I appreciate this very much to add to my knowledge. THANKS 🙏😊 i’m a subscriber to your channel from japan .
Thanks Kenna. I know that some folks and scientists say parabens are fine (as well as other preservatives that have come under fire) but never knew what the story was as far as how these ingredients got a bad rap. Once people realize that the preservatives that companies are using to try and replace these preservatives can be sensitizing I’m thinking the pendulum will swing back to accepting them.
Such a great video. Having followed Caroline Hirons for years, she had already debunked the paraben fear-mongering trend, but you’ve gone into such amazing detail. Thank you!
Also, regarding Lush, I remember clearly they had released a statement that they don’t have any problem with Parabens and find them safe, but due to a lot of requests, they felt obligated to release their “self-preserving” alternatives. They still have their normal products with Parabens.
I think the safest route is just to use natural cold pressed oils with essential oils for cleansing and moisturising.
can you use phenoxyethanol alone as a preservative
Hello Kenna! Great video as usual. Very informative! Can I suggest a topic? I really want to know more about ingredients use to treat hyperpigmentation? Specifically hydroquinone alternatives and whether they are safe and effective, like arbutin, rucinol, kojic acid, and tranexemic acid. Thank you

Very informative video! There is a great deal of "fear mongering" in this area of cosmetics. Many years ago, I attended a workshop where they discussed the popularity of "healthy" food related ingredients--and how quickly the "industry" would begin adding these ingredients to creams, and hair care, and other various sundries to capitalize on the "perceived" benefits. "Gluten free shampoo", anyone?
Thank you so much! I've been educated. I now realize that I've been hoodwinked this whole time about parabens. I'm kinda angry 😠. I'm grateful for folks like you who set things straight. 👍
If you are using products daily the amount builds up in your body. Prolonged use of any chemicals can cause irritation and negative effects like increased sensitivity over time
Great video though. Very helpful and educational👍🏽

Hi, Kenna!
I'm in love with your channel and I've been binge watching your videos for the past couple of weeks. Thank for all the valuable inforamation you are giving us. I hope you're doing well. This video made me think about something that I cannot find the answer to: Would it be possible use a system of preservatives that includes a couple of natural preservatives, for example a combination between the radish root ferment and the caprylhydroxamic acid? Would this combination preserve a product better and would it extend the shelf life further or does it just do the same job as the ingredients separate. Thanks in advance!
Take care and keep up the amazing work 💕💕💕
A viewer just turned me onto your channel, and I'm so glad they did! I'm only sad I haven't found your channel before! You might consider adding tags like "are parabens actually bad for you" for your video to get found by more people, because this info is important, and you obviously know your stuff!
Thank you so much for clearing the air on parabens. I work in the beauty/skin industry and it’s so frustrating when people are scared of these ingredients because they are ill informed.
