    It’s also important to know that “unscented” is not the same as “fragrance free”... unscented products often have fragrance that counteract that natural scent of the product to make it more neutral!

    Thanks for the PSA at the end about wearing too much fragrance in public! :) I'm a severe asthmatic so fragrances can give me an asthma attack. I had an issue at work with a coworker uses fragrances everywhere (plug ins candles lysol etc...) and I unfortunately had to escalate it to HR because she refused to listen to both me and my supervisor. The HR woman came to see her about that and some other issues and I swear it was like the HR lady had bathed in a tub of perfume that morning -_- this was after I gave them a doctor's note about it and everything. Some people just do not get it.

    I agree that it isn’t a judgement thing or “this is better”: BUT As someone who worked in Pediatric research for a time, I’m hyper cautious about essential oils. As they have become more popular, we are seeing more issues. Starting to see them actually interfere with hormones ESPECIALLY in children. (And those with chronic health issues) (Mainly Tea Tree & Lavender). I also wonder about the cumulative effects: Until more research is done, I’m staying away so thank you for going truly fragrance free!! ♥️

      This is interesting! I'm split on essential oils. I definitely don't use them on my face or ingest them but I sometimes use peppermint oil (which I know is pretty irritating to the skin) on my neck when I feel like my muscles are too tight but I'm thinking I should probably stay away from it

    • @rhiannonh5202

      @@girllionness5944 if you still want to use the peppermint oil on your neck maybe do a light mix in a carrier oil so you get the benefits without any side effects (at least in my experience). • @rhiannonh5202
      @rhiannonh5202 5 лет назад +2

      @@AuntBethanys Totally agree! From the research I've done and that my mum has done we are comfortable using topically diluted in a carrier oil but I would NEVER use internally. The most I have ever done is wet a cotton tip with water and put some oil on it (not even a drop just what is on the cap of a bottle when you dab it) and put it where I've had a toothache before. Oils do not mix into water so really diluting within water makes no difference and people doing internal use are often not educated about essential oils at all; I find it extremely concerning. I choose to not buy from companies like young living and doterra that say they can be ingested because without proper data I think it is too risky and irresponsible for a company to claim this which ethically I aqm against.

      Fran Ameri grape seed oil is a carrier oil like olive oil or coconut oil, etc. essential oils can be diluted into a carrier oil to be safer to use, as essential oils are very concentrated. Some carrier oils you can eat or cook with, some you can’t, but the main difference in how they’re made is carrier oils are made from the ingredient being pressed, where essential oils are distilled from botanical ingredients. Essential oils cannot be ingested, and if anyone tells you they can, don’t listen to them. I encourage you to do some researching on your own as well, in case I missed anything or got anything wrong.

    Hi Kenna!
    I just wanted to say don't worry about the comments too much.
    I understand your feelings regarding this, I used to write some stories on an artist site, and in the beginning I was soo happy when I saw that a few people clicked on it to read it, even happier when some left a comment, of course I replied right away. But later on, when thousands and thousands read them with hundreds of comments, suddenly it became a little tiring and I wanted to put off answering them. Not because I wasn't grateful, I loved them very much, but I just felt I wanted to give each of them the right reaction to let them know I truly care, not just writing 'thank youu!!' to everyone. But on the other hand, when too much time passed, it seemed awkward to reply. Vicious circle.
    So don't stress about it, don't feel pressured! We are just happy that we found your channel, even more so with the lots of great content, maybe we also express our thoughts in the comments, but please don't feel that you're expected to answer all of them!
    It's very nice of you though, I think we all appreciate that very much. :)

    It’s interesting that you’re suggesting we become scent respectful and aware, given that like you also indicate that the perfume industry is so large and lucrative. I personally don’t wear it often, only occasionally...but there are many people that wear it every day. I don’t have a problem with it until it’s sprayed in my vicinity where air isn’t moving. I’ve had asthma attacks when people people spray it in enclosed areas. Also I find most popular scents, especially musk, quite revolting. At the same time, scents I do like, that are in my soaps for example, I really enjoy. Ideally, all products would be scent-free. Trying to get people to not use them in public would be much more challenging!!! And yes, a fascinating topic!

    Hello Kenna! Could you please do an entire video just about exfoliation? I have so many doubts. I stopped using my usual exfoliant since you pointed out how the physical particles can be too abrasive for sensitive skin, which in hindsight made sense because exfoliating always made my super-dry sensitive acne-prone skin very angry, getting inflamed and with more outbreaks. The problem is that I don't know anything about chemical exfoliants, nothing at all. I don't know what to do because over time I have damaged my skin with harsh products to control acne, it's why it's so dry and dehydrated on the surface. I need to exfoliate somehow, just don't know what with.

    • @courtneyscott1690
      @courtneyscott1690 5 лет назад +2

      Hokuspokus if your skin is flaky looking, that is actually not dryness, you just need to exfoliate (excess of dead skin cells sitting on top of the surface due to excess oils... typically found around the nose (t-zone area) or places where acne occurs). But physical exfoliants should never be used on acne! Acne is considered broken skin and all physical exfoliants will do is pop open the pimple without you being able to see it, and then it will just spread the bacteria around and cause more acne. Chemical exfoliants are wonderful! I use the alcohol-free and dye-free toner from Clinique. That has acetyl glucosamine and salicylic acid (not near enough to treat acne, just enough to soothe irritation (redness) and help get rid of dead skin cells). Those are both amazing exfoliants! I don’t like the alcohol toners, but the 1.0 is amazing!! I would recommend going to your local Ulta or Sephora and getting a sample. Just make sure they don’t give you the one with alcohol. Also, I use an AHA face mask every week, those two things have helped my skin so much! I hope you give it a try and hope this helped! 😊

      Try a lactic acid treatment. Lactic acid is a BHA which is pretty gentle for people just starting out with chemical exfoliants. The Ordinary has a lactic acid serum that is really good and it’s super affordable!!
      Definitely use the serum after cleanser and before moisturizer. Order of thin to thickest consistency is important when layering skincare products. Oils should always be used last. Hope this helps!! 😊

    Yesss we definitely need a more in depth video on essential oils! I'd love to know your opinion on what essential oil brands are reliable or at least what key things to look for in searching for a reliable brand to purchase from! OMG I think a series focusing on one essential oil at a time would be amazing too because then you could spend more time on each one and list benefits and possible uses, etc. I really hope you do a video with a deeper dive into the chemistry behind the fragrance industry and all that interesting stuff that goes along with it too because I'm super curious about all that too (: I don't know if you've heard of or used any of the Rodan and Fields products but a future video on that would be really cool to as I'm interested to know your perspective! Sorry haha, I know I just wrote you an essay but I LOVE your videos! I've been interested in this stuff for years now and it's great to have someone who can explain things a bit better to me or give me a great foundation of knowledge to start from. THANKS KENNA

    Though you sound knowledgeable about essential oils, I think a lot of people with less information just feel safer without using any scents, especially on the face. It can be very tiring to go through every single ingredient and cross reference information.
    I have no interest in unnecessary synthetic fragrance in skincare, but I do enjoy essential oils and aromatherapy. I'm happy for the tips on how to use them safely, thank you for sharing the information. I really enjoyed hearing a reasonable, informed perspective.
    Speaking of, have you done a video about reasonable sun protection? It seems to be another divisive issue, and I don't find either extreme view very healthy mentally or physically. I'm struggling to find a good balance.

    Thank you for the advice about wearing fragrance in public! A little is fine, but after people who smoke in public, my biggest pet peeve is people who wear heavy fragrance or even spray on deodorants/perfumes next to people! It makes me sneeze, my eyes water, I even might get a headache, its not harmless

    Another phenomenal video! I find the way these skincare and other beauty products are formulated to be fascinating. Can you do a video about the way shampoos and conditioners are formulated? It is impossible to completely rinse out shampoo and conditioners in the shower and I find my neck & arms/wrists irritated after showering with even lukewarm water (so it's not hot water that's making my arms and neck/chest red).

    • @ems_h.eartnotes
      @ems_h.eartnotes 5 лет назад

      I used to have this problem especially with conditioners. I switched to sulphate and silicone free hair care a few years ago which solved the problem for me so that's maybe something to consider. Or if you can't change your products, only wash and condition your hair with your head tipped upside down in the shower and wrap your hair as soon as you finish to stop the excess diluted conditioner running down your back etc

    • @jcjccmz
      @jcjccmz 5 лет назад +1

      @@ems_h.eartnotes Thanks! I don't have a problem with sulfates or silicones, so I think it's the fragrance. I have had to try: 1. rinsing my hair under the bathtub faucet and then immediately wrapping a towel over it (like you say); 2. replacing my showerhead for one with super-high pressure to try to really rinse out the conditioner, lol; 3. the only fragrance/sulfates-free shampoo & conditioner I could find -- Free & Clear -- which completely stripped my hair of color & moisture and left it feeling like pieces of wet straw (so horrible). The ONLY thing that has worked so far for me is: 4. slathering my neck/chest and arms/wrists with petrolatum/Vaseline before getting in the shower, and then I can use whatever color-safe shampoo & conditioner I like, usually a high-end/luxury brand. Obviously if anyone knows of a good/nice fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner (instead of something I now use to wash my yoga mat & my brushes, lol), it would be really appreciated!

      @@jcjccmz gosh that really sounds like an ordeal. I enjoy Briogeo, Rahua, John Masters, also I can cope with Hask well. But if fragrance is the issue I don't think those would do. The only fragrance free S & C I have used and enjoyed was by Faith in Nature. I tried fragrance free from Jason but that gave me the wet straw hair you talked about. Good luck with your quest and I hope others chime in to help x

    Kenna! You probably wont see this but I wanted to give it a shot, I feel like you’re the only person that can help me. I suffer from extremely dry skin on my legs which usually causes them to itch to the point I make them bleed. I feel like I have tried every single moisteriser on the market, and they usually help temporarily, but as soon as the weather gets a bit more dry or I take a shower the itching starts again. It usually starts at night too so sometimes it keeps me up. I dont have any rashes or any ”marks” on my skin that indicate that I have some sort of skin disease, so I’m pretty sure Im just really dry. Do you have any tips on what I can do to help sooth my skin and prevent it from having these crazy itch-attacks? I’ve been suffering from this for years and it’s been really hard.

    Good video! Just as a point of clarification, Patchouli isn’t a resinoid. The plant is actually a herb in the same family as mint, sage and basil, it’s true that it’s absolute is less prone to oxidation than some other absolutes but this would apply more to the darker (and coincidentally less pure, which is to say it has picked up byproducts of less delicate extraction methods) varieties of the oil which are less susceptible to UV degradation and are considered to improve in odour with time. The purest forms of patchouli oil (things like molecular distillates) are very light in colour but are also more prone to UV degradation.

    I read recently that fragrance can cause long term damage to skin cells, possible pigmentation issues (I think it can react to sunlight?) and also cause collagen loss - that's what scares me most!
