I forgot to mention PH meter. I don't think you need this right away as a beginner. PH strips will get you by if you are just starting out, but I highly recommend this ph meter here; HM Digital PH 200 Ph Meter - amzn.to/2O7ySzM
Hi Tara please recommend me preservatives for body butter, sugar/salt scrubs and lotions?? I have asked a lot of people about this but never got an answer. I have also messaged you on instagram but didn't got any reply. Please tell me about a preservative for this as I am about to start selling them but I can't sell them without a preservative.
PUFFZ 93 Hey can you please provide the link for the sides filters for the respirator mask please. There's different ones. Which should I use when working with sci , mica powder ?
Starting a business can be so overwhelming, your beginners series just makes things a little easier. Also, I spend a lot of time in the lab and the reason 70% alcohol is preferred is because it does not evaporate as quickly as the 90%, this allows it to kill more microorganisms and disinfect your work station effectively, whereas 90% alcohol evaporates too quickly and may not get all the microorganisms
I agree with your notion on 70% alcohol for sanitizing, but boiling equipment such as beakers should be done prior to treating with alcohol. I cant believe she says bleach in this.lol.. no lab experience if she is saying bleach for sanitizing
Tara thanks so much. Can you do a video on how you manage your finances? As in how you pay yourself, buy things for the business and things like that without going into bankruptcy?
Hi from Australia 👋 just wanted to thank you for the great information you are posting. As a qualified Sterilization Technician of over 20 yrs it can be upsetting to hear makers use the word sterilization instead of sanitize. There is no way for home makers to sterilize anything as the equipment necessary is large and massively expensive. Even benchtop sterilizers like used in dentist offices unless calibrated and regularly tested cannot do the job properly and to standards. So thanks again. Keep up the good work 💜
I just can’t get enough of your videos you have taught me so much and I love that you come with all these different topics. I came from a different type of skin care more of medicinal apothecary and you have molded my brain of even more of what is possible! I love your content!
You have no idea how much of a time and life saver you have been. I have been looking at all kinds of masterclass on how to make my own moisturizer and just when I felt I was going to give up I found your channel. I'm a beginner to formulating so any knowledge you drop I'm taking notes left and right. Thank you so much for all the info your giving. You make it so easy. I graduate esthetics school next month and the problem I was having was I know what the ingredients do but I didnt know how to mix them together. Thank you again. You sparked that fire for me again. I'm ready to make my moisturizer again thanks to you!
I use bleach sometimes, but I always sanitize my glass bottles for product with sanitizing solution. Working in a Veterinarian's office for years, I also use a quatinary spray to sanatize surfaces. It kills all the nasties, even Corona virus. I use 10 percent bleach solution for my Mason jars, beakers, etc. I also boil these as well. I think your absolutely right about organizing everything. My OCD won't allow me to be disorganized, lol! It does inspire me as well This is a great video for beginners, you did an awesome job! Jill Gross
Someone has probably addressed this already, but just in case…. the 70% Isopropyl Alcohol is best for sanitation because it does not evaporate as fast as 91% Isopropyl Alcohol, thus allowing the solution to kill off more bacteria on your surface area 😊❤ ***Im a Licensed Cosmetologist as well, Tara. I’m also an Instructor and former Board of Health advisor*** anyway, Love your content, and thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with the world. You’re a gem 💎!
I have everything you mentioned, inclusive of a non-mercury thermometer; this type can be immersed into the product to check the temperature instead of just getting a reading of the surface with the temperature gun.
Hey Tara! I am so grateful I found your channel. You give me confidence since I started selling homemade cosmetics. And I've learned a lot from your channel. Thank you for your time and dedication to educate us.
That's such a good idea Tara. Right now, I'm using plastic containers. It was all I could think of at the time. They are heavy and annoying to move. That's for the idea of a bookcase. 😍
Hi Tara! From what I know 70% rubbing alcohol is better because it s does not evaporate in miliseconds like the 96% would (even before it really can sanitize!), so it stays on the surface a bit longer and does the job longer, that is why it is recommended :) cheers!
TaraLee you are so on the money! You sound like few of my instructors teaching in seminars I attended for formulation👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Thank you for what you do❤️ you girl!
Also, you can get the 150 ml at Walmart for $1 to $1.99. I find that they are cheaper than the beakers online. I'm also using drinking glasses and measuring glasses to cook in. They are also cheaper than the beakers online.
As someone who loves creating new formulas and a huge desire for learning more I appreciate you so much!!! Thank you for sharing and creating such great content! Xxxoo
You have no idea how much you're helping me out at this moment! This beginner's series has me waiting for the next video like it was a Netflix series I swear XD.. Now, a couple questions/comments: - As far as I have found online, 70% alcohol has shown to sanitize the best since it is a good balance between the concentration vs the time it takes to evaporate. 90% is also good but it evaporates just a bit too fast. - I really really need some info in which preservatives are for what uses and it would be awesome if there were some that are not only good for our health but also for the environment. - Last but not least, is there any surfactant you'd recommend that helps create bigger lather than using just SCI and cocobetaine? I'm trying to stay away from SLS and SLES and would love to find a milder biodegradable "eco" extra fluffy foamy surfactant. I'm sorry for such a long comment, but know that you're inspiring far more people than you can imagine. Cheers from Mexico
awwh I am so happy to hear that! :) Glad this series has been helping you out so much. -I will definitely have a video on preservatives soon for this series/ - SCI isn't SLS or SLES so SCI would be a great choice. so would coco glucoside, decyl glucoside, foaming apple, foaming soy, etc. i will be doing videos all on cleansing surfactants as well.
@@TaraLeee Looking forward to those 🤘🏼! And I'm happy overall with SCI but I just feel it ain't "fluffy/foamy" enough. It would be awesome to see like a side by side comparison on the different surfactants to see how they compare. I've looked everywhere for a vid like that one and no one has done it yet
Thank you soon much for taking g the time to do this beginners series. This has helped me to understand formulating better!! It has also helped me find the right products to use. Sidenote, where did you purchase your bottles from? Everything I have researched is a bit high $$ for my budget.
Do you have a video of showing how you organize all your products and equipment?? I'm new to this and have no idea how to store and organize everything
I am a new subscriber and I have been binge watching your videos because I am hoping to start a small business for body/skincare. I know that it will be hard, but I am going to donate a dollar to foster care per order. I am still in the planning faze, but my mom is incredibly crafty and already has a ton of materials. Thank you for all of these videos, I am a very visual/list using person, so your channel really helps. Thank you
I absolutely love watching your videos, they’re always so insightful ☺️ I was just wondering, to help with avoiding product spilling over around the rim of the bottle since this tends to happen to me, would it make sense to empty the oils into squeeze bottles (like the ketchup bottles with a funnel shaped nozzle) since that’ll be a lot easier to work with?
Hi Tara. What are the cons if we use plastic containers? Will it effects the products? Also, can we sanitize them using the bleach solution? Btw, I'm from Malaysia. I love your videos 😊
The amount of everything (ph meter, sanitizing solution, and containers not included) Is around 250-260 dollars If ordered on Amazon Shipping and tax is included
Hi, I wash them with hot water and dish soap then let air dry. then I sanitize them. I mentioned in this video about how I always sanitize my equipment before using. I linked to a video in the description box on how I sanitize them.
Hey Tara, I am ne to your channel and really enjoying it! I am watching at work and couldn't comment at all but I couldnt help but notice on this video how you already had all of the tools necessary to keep your safe from covid 19 which this video was release about a month before it became relevant in Florida. I thought that was pretty cool. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. This is one of the most informative channels I have come across. Thanks again.
Hey. I have a pack of sterilize syringes from Amazon. Can this be used as pipettes? I have like a pack of 100 😩 I purchased a natural care product & they recommend pipettes or syringes for their product. I hate to waste them
Hi Tara - do you sanitize the plastic pipettes? Also, if you work with oils, butters, waxes, micas, and colorants, how do you remove that stuff from the beakers? I've tried soaking the beakers and equipment overnight in Alconox solution but it doesn't help.
Hey TaraLee, Do you prefer plastic or glass containers? In Australia our choices are limited and I’m trying to o work out the best for products and also aesthetically
Hello Tara thanjs for your videos! I started watching you since last year☺️ Anyways, I want to ask how to heat ingredients for larger batches? Water bath won't work right? Thanks
This might sound stupid lol but is there a specific frying pan you need to use in order to heat up your ingredients? Esp with the big beakers you use for larger recipes. A certain sized pan fits all? Lol and thank you for the videos!
Can u use this sanitation method for anhydrous (products containing no water) cosmetics containers, or is there a chance leftover water would contaminate the ingredients?
since I am using a sanitizing solution there is no reason to soak in a bleach solution. You can soak in a 10% bleach solution or a sanitizing solution like I do.
Thank you so much for these videos! I started my skincare brand via a private label company. At first, I was nervous to develop my own formulas but your videos are so insightful, I feel way more confident! Do you also air dry little glass pipets, like from essential oil bottles? I find it is quite hard to dry the inside completely...
they are one-time use, and they come sanitized, but they should be packaged in a manner where they stay sanitized and are not contaminated
